I love a good cozy mystery book on food. This one is no exception. The characters are engaging and the plot is fun. I love the recipes in this book too. This book was approved by netgalley and the publisher for me to read and review.
What can I possibly say about how much I adored Case of the Bleus by Korina Moss that won't come across as incredibly CHEESY?
It was layered and complex like one of the cheeses Willa would serve in her shop - a mystery within a mystery within a mystery!
I love #TeamCheese - Willa and her inner circle are endlessly delightful! The town is fun and charming. And the suspects are all twisty and multi-dimensional. And the payoff in the end? *chef's kiss* Or, should I say *cheesemonger's kiss*?
I had a delightful time going back to hang out with Willa and her crew! The cheese shop folks continue to be a ton of fun to spend time with and I enjoy how the relationships have grown. As far as Willa’s romantic life, that subplot is somewhat falling flat for me. Hopefully some of that gets resolved soon. I thought bringing in Willa’s old colleagues was a smart move - it brought a fresh perspective to the character and some intense cheese nerdiness. The mystery itself was fun and I loved the ending.
Case of the Bleus offered up a delightful charcuterie platter of motives, suspects and clues. I enjoyed the indulgent glimpse into a cheese shop and the secrets behind creating the perfect recipe for blue cheese. I wish the one important cheese-related subplot had been a little more resolved in the end, especially after following the trail of cryptic clues. But, all in all, this was a page-turning cozy mystery, the likes of comfort food on a rainy day!
I love cheese so a title like "Case of the Bleus: A Cheese Shop Mystery" was an instant attraction for me. The story centers around Willa Bauer and her shop "Curds and Whey." in the small town of Yarrow Glen in the Sonoma Valley. The Northwest Cheese Invitational has cheese mongers gathering from all over the area. Willa is excited to see her old friends from Max Dumas's cheese shop, where she learned everything she needed to know to open her own shop. Max was famous for his Church Bleu - his own custom made bleu cheese. Sadly Max died recently in a car accident so his employees are gathering at the Invitational to honor him one last time and meet for the reading of Max's will. They are hoping to inherit the recipe for Max's coveted cheese. Mysteries abound and one of Willa's friends and Max's favorite employee dies in a seemingly innocent event at a picnic. It is up to Willa and friends to discover who murdered the girl, and find the recipe for the cheese. Of course there are small fires to put out along the way including Willa's romantic dilemma - should she go back with her old boyfriend or pursue the attraction she feels for Yarrow Glenn's Detective Heath. I loved learning more about cheese and the recipes that Moss includes at the end of the book look delicious!! This is the fourth book in the series, I'm eager to read the first three. It was well-plotted, well-written and fun to read. Fans of cozy mysteries will enjoy Case of the Bleus. I appreciate the chance to read the ARC.
Case of the Blues is the 4th book in the Cheese Shop Mystery series by Korina Moss. This is a highly popular series for good reason. It’s got fantastic characters whom you can’t help but like and care about. They are unique, quirky, diverse and so much fun! Their on-going stories are compelling and the double mystery in this story is engaging, filled with twists, turns and suspense.
This story centers around a cheese festival that is coming to town and in honor of Willa’s former employer and his winning bleu cheese. Willa is eager to reunite with her past friends and coworkers, but tensions seem to be running high amongst them, and a sense of impending doom looms large. This is a highly entertaining addition to the series and I can’t wait to see what comes next!
The fourth book in Korina Moss's Cheese Shop Mystery series proves to be as fun as the first three. Willa Bauer is excited to see her former coworkers when they came to town for the Northwest Cheese Invitational. They are gathering to celebrate the life of their former boss, Max Dumas, and his famous Church Bleu cheese. A search for the secret location of the Church Bleu recipe and aging space involves Willa, her coworkers, her neighbors and friends. Once again, Willa must solve the mystery before the guilty party gets away. Looking forward to number five!
This is one of my favorite cozy mystery series. I love all the cheese references although I'm not expert on the subject lol This time Team Cheese is hot on the case of the mysterious making of Church Bleu and the murder of Willa's former co-worker, Kendall.
Grab this one and enjoy as you follow the mystery and salivate with all the food references lol
I sincerely appreciate the publisher and NetGalley for the review copy. All opinions expressed are my own.
Case of the Bleus is the fourth Cheese Shop cozy mystery by Korina Moss. Due out 26th Sept 2023 by Macmillan on their St. Martin's Press imprint, it's 320 pages and is available in mass market paperback, audio, and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links throughout.
Cheese shop owner Willa Bauer is back with her quirky helpers, her cheese store Curds & Whey, lots and lots of cheese trivia, and a well constructed puzzle to solve. This time, there's a lost recipe for an award winning bleu cheese and cheesemakers dropping dead. It's up to cheesemonger Willa and friends to get to the bottom of the mystery.
As with most cozies, the emphasis is on the characters and the puzzle. The crimes are described off-scene and without being gruesome. The language is very clean. The series continues to improve, from a strong start, and the ensemble cast of Willa and her employees continue to mesh and become more three dimensional and believable (for a cozy)
Although it's the fourth book in the series, the plot arc and resolution are self-contained, and it works well enough as a standalone. With four books currently in the series, it would make a good choice for a cozy series binge or buddy read.
Four stars. Definitely one for shopfront cozy fans. It's full of esoteric cheese minutiae and I found a number of specialty cheeses I'm looking forward to trying. The author has also included intriguing cheese themed recipes for a ham & blue cheese tart and Gorgonzola garlic bread (yum!).
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Case of the Bleus is the fourth book in the Cheese Shop Mysteru series. Willa Bauer, owner of the Curds & Whey local cheese shop, has a way for finding herself in the middle of murder cases. After her old mentor, Max Dumas passes away, the mystery around his famous cheese recipe surrounds Willa. Never one to back down from a mystery, Willa and her friends work to uncover the secret behind Max’s cheese and the murder that hangs over them all.
I haven’t read any other other books in this series, but I was still able to enjoy this cozy mystery. Other than missing out on some of the background info, especially surrounding Max, I felt comfortable enough reading this as a standalone. I like the main character, Willa, a lot and the people she surrounds herself with. There were a lot of riddles in this mystery, which helped add to the story itself and I enjoyed this new aspect that I am not used to in my cozy mysteries. This book interested me enough that I am going to start this series from the beginning! If you are a cozy mystery fan, and a lover of cheese, give this series a try!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book!
Case of the Bleus is the fourth book in the cheese shop mystery series. The book is a fun breezy read that builds on the characters from the previous books. While this is part of a series it can be read as a stand-alone too.
By far the best Cheese Shop Mystery yet. While I am not a fan of the Bleu I am a fan of of this series. This latest mystery, much like bleu cheese, has a lovely vein/mystery running through it surrounding the will of Willow's recently deceased mentor Max Dumas, and the secret of his amazing and renowned Church Bleu. Max liked puzzles, riddles, and mysteries, so of course, his last wishes are not necessarily straight forward with regards to his Church Bleu. I am reminded of a line from the movie "National Treasure" but instead of a secret lying with Charlotte it is being kept by Rebecca. Willow's former coworkers are interesting group of suspects who seemed like contestants on a reality TV show rather than coworkers and colleagues. Then there is the estranged daughter, Maxine, and the over the top Hugo Potts, president of the board of directors of the Northwest Cheese Society. I had not figured out the who or why or the where before the big reveal. Willow and #TeamCheese do their best rendition of a Scooby Doo and the gang plan, which means that Willow is smart enough to live to sleuth another day because she is part of a team. She is not as good at keeping herself completely out of harm's way and I fear for her blossoming relationship with Detective Heath/Jay/Heath as it seems to be getting a tad wilted. Before you start reading the book, I would like to suggest that you skip to the very end, no peeking before the recipe section, and make one of the wonderful cheese related dishes. I tried the Gorgonzola Garlic Bread and paired it with a bottle of mead (yes I actually had one on hand).
Gone for Gouda is the second volume in Korina Moss’ Cheese Shop Mystery series. Protagonist Willa Bauer is excited that her Cheese Shop, Curds & Whey would be hosting Phoebe Winston, a famous vegan chef and influencer. Not because Willa was a huge fan, but because she hoped Phoebe’s influence would help put her cheese shop on the map. Things soon go awry. First, it’s revealed that Phoebe is not vegan at all. Then, Phoebe is murdered and Willa’s young assistant, Archie is the prime suspect. It’s up to Willa to save him and her shop.
Looking forward to the next one!
I received this Advanced Reader Copy of Gone for Gouda from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was my first book by this author and the series. I really enjoyed the characters and the story. I will definitely be going back to the beginning of the series. Thanks to NetGalley for the privilege to read and review this book.
When a prestigious cheese festival comes to Yarrow Glen, excitement runs through the town, but especially to the staff of Curds & Whey, and it's owner, Willa Bauer. The Invitational will honor her former late employer and his exceptional Bleu cheese which won best of show for an incredible three years. It's going to be the first time she'll see her former friends and co-workers in more than a year. Once they arrive in town, Willa picks up on tension between them concerning who will inherit the shop and the secret recipe to the moneymaker cheese. As on the first two books in this series, the mystery is solid and kept me guessing until the end. And Willa's friends, current and past, are well drawn characters that add to the enjoyment of the story.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this title. This is my first book by this author.
Cheesemakers have gathered at the Northwest Cheese Invitational to celebrate the life of the creator of Church Bleu, a renowned cheese with a secret recipe. Our protagonist, Willa, used to work with Max, the cheese's creator, until she opened her own shop. Her former coworkers are also attending the gathering, and everyone wants to know who is inheriting the secret of the cheese. All is going well until one of Willa's former coworkers, in the running to inherit, dies under mysterious circumstances. Accompanied by her employees and friends, Willa investigates the death and the mystery of the cheese.
I quite liked this one. The food and cheese pairings were a fun bonus. I like the characters and that it is a cozy that didn't center on a romance. Yes, there is one, and it is less central. The puzzle of the cheese was well thought and creative. Some of the characters were somewhat one dimensional, and fewer might have been better. All in all, a fun read.
First things, I must confess this is technically not a fall cozy mystery. I thought it was when I picked it up, probably because of the cheese? idk, but it still has a fall vibe, so it counts in my books. If you love cheese, you’re going to love this book – a cute little cheese shop in a cozy little town and a murder mystery where cheese plays an integral part. There are so many amazing detailed descriptions of cheese (flavor profiles, textures, what process gives each unique taste), recipes with cheese (included step-by-step in the back of the book), and just a real love for cheese on every page. The mystery was good up to the very last crumb and I quite enjoyed it with a nice cheese plate to nibble on by my side (this book made me crave cheese so bad, I was dreaming about it).
Fun cozy. I like the cheese shop mysteries however, they are not my favorite. The clues and the mystery part seem a little scattered but, the characters are likeable. So for a light hearted romp in the cheese world it works.
In the fourth book in this series, cheesemongers are gathering in Willa's town for a convention and to celebrate the life of her former mentor, Max. Among those in attendance are her former coworkers, set to take over Max's shop along with Willa's replacement, Max's estranged daughter who is set to inherit the shop, and the head of the local cheese maker's association. each of them hopes to inherit the secret to Max's famous bleu cheese, but when the reading of the will seems to offer more questions than answers, it sends them into a competitive frenzy ultimately leaving one of them dead.
I really, really like this cozy mystery series. Willa is a fun character with an even more fun (and delicious) job; I love learning more about cheese in each book. This story introduced a number of new, interesting characters and plot device of--in addition to solving the murder--finding the secret to Max's bleu cheese. Portions of the story and personalities felt a bit outlandish, but not necessarily atypical for this subgenre. I'm really rooting for Willa and the detective, so, without saying too much--I hope they can work things out. But in general, I can't wait to see what the next book brings!
Thanks to Minotaur Books for my eARC! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
5 stars - 9/10
I wasn’t that interested in the mystery because I found the whole plot of fighting over cheese a bit silly. I also found it silly everyone was chasing after this cheese. Someone gets killed over it which didn’t make sense. I liked the characters though. They all come across as a found family, which is one of my favourite tropes.
