I can relate to the title of this novel completely. I feel like I’ve been running on borrowed borrowed fumes for too long.
Sasha is fed up with the pithy ridiculous demands of her job at an app. I felt bombarded just by reading all she was expected to do with the stupid mood boards and constant affirmations, gee whiz!
No wonder Sasha bolted. She runs to a seaside resort to recharge except it’s a dump and not like she remembered.
I liked the location of the sea because I do find the water to be rejuvenating.
I thought the story dragged a lot and my interest waned.
I was glad Sasha got a chance to confront her employer and maybe correct some wrongs. Most of the time that never occurs.
Sophie Kinsella will always be the author I go to for comfort and a “laugh out loud like a crazy person sitting alone at the bar” situation..(yes, this happened).
What starts as a woman “burnt out” from her job, literally running away to join a convent and ultimately slamming into a brick wall, turns into a journey back in time to a place where she created some of her fondest childhood memories. When Sasha returns to the Rilston after 20 years hoping to find herself, it’s not the same place it used to be. It’s filled with kooky (and hilarious) people, and not much else, unless you count the boarded up “seaside view”’windows and endless rain. Until Sasha meets Finn, an angry man also finding himself after feeling “The Burnout”. This is a cute enemies to lovers story filled with many laughs, and even a little mystery! Some parts felt a bit rushed, and at times felt a little over the top, but overall it was a great, feel good read! Thank you to Netgalley for an ARC of the Burnout, in exchange for an honest review :)

Sophie Kinsella always delivers with OTT situations and hi-jinx! Over-worked urban millennials Sasha and Finn have both flipped out at work and find themselves taking a break in a small seaside resort where they’d both spent their childhood summers. Their interactions cycle from enemies to friends, and maybe even lovers? Another good read!
This is Sophie Kinsella back in full force. I have to say at the beginning of this book I was a bit hesitant, it might have even hinted at going a tad cliché. But oh how i was wrong. It was lovely and heartfelt and even funny in its absurdity of it all. I fell in love with both characters and how they help each other in their journeys. I was laughing out loud at their tries to do “Wellness” the magazine way. Their relationship was a very satisfying slow burn and this book is a great getaway about a getaway.
A clever premise written in Kinsella's fun and fanciful voice, this book is perfect for rom-com readers who are looking for a just a bit more depth to the story. It's easy to get caught up, as our main characters do, in the hustle culture of life. Watching these two balance their work and their love is a delight.
I absolutely loved this one!
The characters were fabulous. Literally every character in the book had some specialness to them.
I loved how the romance was just the cherry on top of a perfect story. I couldn’t help falling in love with the little getaway and the staff how worked there.
There was so much going on within the story it was so fun to read.
Sophie Kinsella does it again in The Burnout, mixing the relatable with the ridiculous. Sasha is a workaholic. When a course of events provides Sasha with some much need rest time, her well-meaning mother steps in a plans a vacation for Sasha. Sasha returns to the site of her childhood vacations and finds that for everything that changes, some things remain the same. Laugh along with Sasha as she wanders down memory lane and takes on new adventures
This book is laugh out loud funny, filled with plenty of heart, and wholly relatable.
After Sasha’s toxic workplace causes her mental health to take a turn for the worse, she goes out on some R&R in order to decompress and focus on herself. She chooses to go to Rilston, a small town brimming with nostalgia from her childhood summers and new friendships in the form of Finn, another guest staying there for burnout, and the hotel staff who were quirky and caring.
Sasha’s attempts at wellness go awry more times than once causing comical mishaps that I could see myself falling prey to. However, she finds herself healing through other means, whether it be in her budding friendship with Finn or learning to understand her own wants and desires.
I also have to mention any time Terry, the old surfing coach from her youth, makes an appearance. He was such a source of inspiration and each scene with him or about him made you feel happy and optimistic.
This was my second book by Kinsella and both times I found myself relating to the characters and circumstances. This was a great contemporary fiction, light on the romance and heavy on the self-reliance and friendships.
I received an advanced copy through Netgalley in return for an honest review.
This book is a delight! I enjoyed both the inner dialogue of the MC Sasha as well as her dialogue with MC Finn. This book had a little bit of mystery, a great romance, and a tiny bit of spice. Overall really well done!
It took me a while to get into this story. The beginning was just all a bit too frenetic and unbelievable for me, but it did a good job in that sense of setting up the burnout Sasha needed to recover from.
While I enjoyed the relationship that built between her and Finn (as he was healing from his own burnout), what I enjoyed even more was the secondary story about how surf instructor Terry had made such an impact on so many lives. I found that part of the story much more satisfying than the burnouts and recoveries themselves. And I don't suppose that's the way it's supposed to be...
While I really enjoy Sophie Kinsella's stories, this wasn't one of my favorites. It's okay, but not great. But I do thank the author, Random House and NetGalley for an advance review copy. And I look forward to reading more of her books.
This book was excellent! Sophie Kinsella at her finest!
It's laugh out loud funny. The character growth is fantastic! I adored the quirky side characters. It's just so heartwarming and relatable and an absolute delight.
What a treat.
A delightful and entertaining read. I loved the humor and I felt so upbeat after reading this book.
Many thanks to Random House and to Netgalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
How did I almost forget why I love Sophie Kinsella? I was in a reading slump before I started this and I just couldn't get into anything. This book was absolutely perfect. Just what I needed!
Sasha is burned out and goes on a beach holiday for a break. She's trying twenty steps to enlighten her journey. Thankfully she is on a beach 🏖️ and she will be alone in peace. But wait! There's someone else on her beach and rock. It's Finn. Another burnt out and seemingly quite grumpy man from the train she saw on her way In.
As they begin their journey to recharge they often become stuck together. Can they share a beach and maybe even more?
This is a delightful tale from Sophie Kinsella. A nice easy read with grumpy characters and a lovely little storyline. I must admit I also really enjoyed the side characters, often they become my favorite in the scene.
You need to read this story it is simply too cute to miss. It had me laughing out loud a few times and rooting for the characters.
Thank you to netgalley and Random house publishing for this arc! It was such a treat!
This book had sooooo much potential, but really just fell flat for me in the end :-( The first 15ish percent had me cackling bc it was so relatable, but after that I feel like nothing really happened and it was such a struggle to get through. Despite the pacing issues, I did really like both main characters and I looooooved the emphasis on mental health and how important it is to take care of yourself /before/ the burnout hits. Also the plot line with their childhood surfing instructor made me want to lie in a puddle of my own tears bc it was so touching <3 Thank you to Random House Publishing for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Sophie Kinsella does it again! She's my favorite women's fiction writer - her books are funny, romantic, and heartwarming, and this was no exception. The beach town was hilarious, and the main character was so relatable as per usual. Would generally recommend to women's fiction readers. 4 stars.
I enjoyed this a lot. I know parts of it were ridiculously overdone to make a point, but it still resonated with me. Every place I've worked has had "mandatory fun" or social events that happen during work hours that you don't actually get time off for (still covering phones, desks, meeting same-day deadlines, etc). I think most of us can relate to staying too long in a toxic workplace because it's overwhelming or risky to make a change. I related to the main character and I laughed a lot (with her, not at her...mostly.)
I have read a few comments about the craziness of the hotel where most of this book takes place. I found it quirky and entertaining. I wouldn't mind a bit if future characters of Kinsella's ended up spending a week here.
All in all, it was silly, but not too silly for me. I enjoyed it.
*Thanks for NetGalley and Random House Publishing/The Dial Press for the advanced review copy.
This was a really cute relatable book by Sophie Kinsella. It was very easy to follow and I really enjoyed the main character and the plot. This was my first book by this author.
What happens when you are so overworked that you can't take it anymore. Well that's what happened to Sasha. This book resonates with a lot of people and how burned out their jobs can make them. This book isn't serious and a self-help book. This book is bringing something happening to the word in a fun and light-hearted way. It is fun to go along with Sasha and her yogi, eating kale and being Zen to help her figure out what she really wants in life. The quirky people, sea life and Finn are a bonus to the story. I am leaving this review voluntarily after being sent a free book.
I am a big Sophie Kinsella fan - especially confessions of a shopaholic series. However, this just wasn’t doing it for me, it took too long to get going and was just overall slow and boring.
What happens when your department is too small, your work inbox is too full, and no one will listen to your concerns about the company?
You burn out.
However, if you’re Sasha, you burn out, and you get sent away to a beach town in the middle of the winter that’s full of characters but lacking the sun and charm you remember from childhood so that you can get healthy, get your life on track, and get the rest you’ve been in dire need of.
Well, you might get a little rest. And a few terrible cups of green juice.
The Burnout is equal parts funny and — as a modern woman who *also* struggles to find the perfect work/life balance — relatable, but probably in the most fun way possible!
Sophie Kinsella truly never fails! This book had me laughing from start to finish, and it’s definitely new favorite of mine.
Thank you so much to NetGalley, Random House Publishing, and Sophia Kinsella for providing an advanced digital copy!
