Unfortunately, I couldn't make myself finish this book. It was just so slow. I could see where it was going and I didn't want to go along for the silly, quirky, disheveled hotel where she finds herself vibe.
I've read the Shopaholic series a few years ago and loved every single one. To get back into a Sophie Kinsella book was like coming home. A feel good, quitty romcom with heartwarming moments. Relatable topics with work stress and mental health healing. A great reminder to take care of yourself to avoid burnout.
✨ Review ✨ The Burnout by Sophie Kinsella; Narrated by: Bessie Carter
This was my first book by Sophie Kinsella and it made me laugh out loud. The premise is relatable - a woman overwhelmed by work, suffering from burnout, and feeling at a dead end. She quickly decides maybe she'll run away to the convent down the street, but instead of getting her Sound of Music moment, all she runs into is a brick wall.
While the burnout component isn't funny, the book is filled with the silly and ridiculous alongside some genuinely moving reflection on the main character's life and her journey to find herself again. I loved her friendship with the male main character, and eventual romance, though that didn't really have the space it needed to bloom and grow.
The setting of the main part of the book in a small beach town was delightful and her efforts to chase self-help culture via yoga and meditation and kale smoothies definitely was a real lol moment (again, relatable in that this stuff can be helpful but also way overdone). There's a sort of mystery at the heart of this book as well that I enjoyed but didn't feel quite fulfilled by in the end.
Full of a hilarious cast of characters this is great in audio form. I thought the narrator really brought the story to life and made the comedy feel even more funny than reading it on the page. An absolute hoot!

Absolutely loved this book. Sophie Kinsella is a brilliant writer and I just adore her books so much. This one was my favorite book of the year. So good, I didn't want it to end. We need a sequel!!
I never miss a chance to read a new Sophie Kinsella book. So when I was able to read The Burnout, I cleared my TBR and moved this to the top. I have read many of her books and this one did not disappoint. I love her writing and the characters she creates. Sasha has had a work break down. She gets out in leaves and doesn’t know what to do with herself. Her mother suggests she go back to a beach resort, they used to go to when she was younger. She can almost smell the salt air, when making plans to get there. Once there, there are many changes but it feels just like it used to. Sasha starts her wellness journey and meets a fellow hotel mate Finn, who is on a work break too. The hotel has quirky staff, hardly any furniture and needs a remodel. But the staff couldn’t be more accommodating to Sasha. They start to take very good care of her and she starts to find peace. She starts to remember the past and how she might have known Finn, when they were younger. The two get closer, they both reimagine their work lives and start to move forward. The book is just what ai needed. A cute story, with lovable characters and an ending you can be happy about. I love that they are all a British and it is set in an English beach town. I want to thank Netgalley & the author for my copy for an honest read. It is an absolute pleasure reading and reviewing the authors books. I can’t wait to read the next one. I hope you enjoy it too!!!

The Burnout by Sophie Kinsella
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / Pages: 403 / Genre: Romance
Overworked to the point of exhaustion, Sasha is burned out. She doesn’t have time to eat, see her friends, or worry that she has zero sex drive. She has hit a brick wall—literally. Ordered to take some time off for her mental health, Sasha’s mother books her a room at a seaside resort she loved as a child. But when she gets there, the resort is in disrepair with an oddball staff, an unhappily married couple, and a grumpy dude with anger issues. Determined to eat healthy, clear her mind with yoga on the beach, and manifest herself into a better life, Sasha if off to a rocky start but eventually gets more out of her time off than she could have hoped for.
I loved this hilarious and heart-warming book! It reminded me that it’s been a while since I read a Sophie Kinsella book, which I will now remedy.
A high ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me!
Thank you @netgalley and @randomhouse for the advanced copy of this book. I loved it!
Another book by Sophie Kinsella means blocking off time to read because I am not putting one of her books down until it is finished! "The Burnout" is no exception. It is witty, funny, and a little romantic. After melting down at work, Sasha is looking for a reprieve in her old family vacation spot. She encounters several hilarious situations which she takes in stride with another vacationer, Finn. Will they or won't they get together? Will Sasha go back to her old life and job?
Okay. So I want to state that Sophie Kinsella is one of my favorite authors. I was happy to receive a copy of her book. That being said, I was a bit surprised that I didn’t feel like this was her best work. She’s a gifted romance writer, but I found this didn’t work for me. The story of Sasha being burnout from work was a bit boring. Then she meet Finn who was also stressed from his job as well. So then I’m reading two individuals who needed a vacation that fell in love. Which was a bit boring. Which made me sad. There were quirky characters that I did enjoy. The ending was a bit ludicrous, but sweet. Overall, it was a nice romance, not too much spark, but it was okay. I highly recommend her other books. I received this ARC from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for my review.
The first thing that drew me into Sophie Kinsella's "The Burnout" was its cover and title. I looked into the eyes of this illustration and they just spoke to me. *haha
Sasha, unable to endure her toxic workplace, escapes to Rilston Bay, a childhood summer spot. She finds the resort in a rough state, but she makes the most of it. While seeking her favorite spot, she meets Finn, a grumpy yet kinda sheeexy man. In fact, he just seems to be everywhere (gotta love small towns). Anyway, with only one other couple as guests, Sasha and Finn bond over their shared background, growing up in the same place, bringing them closer.
One thing they both shared from the past was Terry, their old surfer instructor, a wise man. He imparted valuable wisdom to Sasha: “Infinite waves. Infinite chances. You can’t dwell or think about what might have been. There’s always another wave. Although you have to be looking the right way to see it.” Sasha embraced this advice, resolving, “I need to look to the horizon, to see the opportunities rising and paddle towards them.” Terry's voice echoed in her mind, urging her, "Don't just sit there—paddle! Paddle hard! Harder.”
I absolutely adored every page of this heartwarming story. It inspired and uplifted me. I couldn't help but laugh out loud on the train, wearing a silly grin. My heart ached for these love-worn souls, who not only found what they were missing in each other but also within themselves. As a devoted romance fan, I cherished Finn and Sasha, whose infectious laughter and undeniable chemistry melted my heart and made me feel giddy.
I borrowed the audiobook for The Burnout from my local library, and I enjoyed it so much! (I especially enjoyed that the narrator pronounced the name of the female main character Sasha the same as I pronounce my name- Sash-uh!) Sophie Kinsella has long been one of my favorite authors, and I enjoyed the zany setting of The Rilston with all it's quirks and unusual employees too. Desk clerk Cassidy was a hoot (watch for her hilarious side job) and former surfing teacher Terry's motto "The ride is it." is one we should all take to heart. Sasha and Finn's slow-burn romance was sweet and tender and heart-warming and such a joy to read.
Thank you to NetGalley, The Dial Press, & Penguin Random House for the opportunity to read and review this book before it's publication date! This in no way affected my review, opinions are my own.
Ahhhh, Sophie Kinsella. Love it or hate it, there’s no in between (for me). This wasn’t one of my more recent favs (see: Party Crasher, which I LOVED), but I think for some of her die hard fans it’ll be just fine.
A couple notes:
There’s a tiny bit of instalove, meh
A big part of the subplot is just that … sub(par)
This would make a fantastic movie but novelization didn’t hit right
If this gets made into a movie I will watch it for Herbert alone and that is not a lie
The Burnout is another entertaining romp by Sophia Kinsella, one of my favorite authors of fun, lighthearted and comedic novels, the ultimate palate cleanser!
Sasha's toxic work environment causes her to have a mental health breakdown. She takes time off to decompress and she travels to Rilston, a beach town from her childhood summers. It is there that she meets Finn, who is there for similar reasons and the pair bond and form a budding friendship.
I think that Kinsella did a fantastic job with her character development. The cast of characters were engaging and endearing, and I have to mention that Kinsella is a star when it comes to writing plucky female heroines.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of this highly entertaining read!!
Omg. I’m at 30%. I’ve laughed out loud more times with this book than any other in recent memory. I did love this line.
"Ah, here's Nikolai with your green smoothie." he adds. "In the absence of organic kale, our chef used frozen Birds Eye peas."
30-50% (of the ARC) is a bit slow for me. Sometimes I jinx myself when so excited about a book that I think is splendid. Changed from 5 to 4 stars. Continuing to read.
Now finished. I really liked the ending. Although I liked the ending, I'm not planning on changing my review back to 5 stars. It seems more like a 4 star book to me.
Thank you to NetGalley and publisher Random House Publishing Group for the advance read copy of The Burnout in exchange for an honest review.
The beginning of this book was good and it hooked me. It had me laughing out loud. But then it just sort of dragged on for me. It's cute. Overall an okay read
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group - Random House for the E-ARC

3.5 stars rounded up to 4

Full of charming and quirky characters, this is a lighthearted romcom perfect for anyone looking for a fun, quick read.
A lot of the main characters problems were caused by miscommunication/ not speaking up for herself. This didn’t bother me too much since it’s a pretty common trope for the genre, but anybody that can’t stand a miscommunication trope may want to skip this one.
I also thought the “mystery” element slowed down the story a bit without adding much, but overall I enjoyed it and would definitely read more from this author.
Thank you to the Publisher for my Arc!
Yes i know i'm submitting this review late but reading slumps are the worst okay. what can ya do?
I didn't know how much i needed this book because like Sasha I too also feel burnt out and this was perfect escape. Its a perfect cozy romance that i absolutely loved.
The Burnout is a sweet story of finding yourself and love despite the grind of everyday life. Sasha and Finn both arrive at the Rilston, the quirky hotel from their childhoods, burntout from the pressure of their jobs and lives. As their relationship develops and evolves, they learn more about themselves and how each of them need to heal. It is so easy to get caught up in the routine and stressors of daily life, Sasha's story reminds us of the importance of introspection and reflection while also having us laughing and smiling along with her.
First off, I cannot believe I received an ARC from my absolute favorite author in my teens. This book goes to show she’s still very relevant and has a broader audience now. I found it to be really funny at parts but then also souk searching during others. What kept me from rating it higher is I felt like there could’ve been a little more substance to the plot or it could’ve been shorter.
Kinsella weaves a story that remains heavily centred around female resilience and tenacity. And even when I could barely see the page through my own tears, or breathe from the tension between the main characters, there was no looking away from this breathtaking whirlwind of a book. Loved it.
I love Sophie Kinsella’s books and characters. This one did not disappoint. I loved the whole Rilston Hotel staff and their quirky personalities! What a wonderful, humorous romance that helps readers see the importance of living life to the fullest.
