I have loved Sophie Kinsella's works ever since the first Shopaholic book came out. "The Burnout" was reminiscent of her earlier works, it was fun, hilarious and nostalgic. I adored this book, and the concept of two burned out characters seeking happiness and reconnection and their journey/how their relationship evolved throughout the story. Definitely recommend!
I love a Sophie Kinsella book, and The Burnout did not disappoint. Sasha works as a seemingly glamourous job at a .com company in London, but all is not as it seems. She's slipped into workaholic habits with toxic colleagues, and it all comes to a head one day. She runs from her office to the building across the street, which happens to be a church where she tries to convert to Catholicism & become a nun. The order will not have her, and she is put on a leave of absence from work and goes to the beach in Devon to try to recover from her burnout. Of course, meddling mother, a handsome grumpy stranger, and quirky locals intervene to make her stay memorable.
Sophie Kinsella is the Queen of Rom-Coms! She has written another delightfully funny story in The Burnout. You won’t want to miss it!
Loved this book, the main character is dealing with burn out at her job and goes on a retreat to the area her family always loved to vacation as a child, but she hasn’t been back since her father dies in her teens. The area is a lot different than she remember, and being the off season there is only one other guest in this now dilapidated resort. He’s been sent on retreat as well to work out some anger management issues and while they clash at first, soon sparks fly. Both of them work to overcome the stresses in their life, as well as the comedic misunderstandings with the ways others think they should fix it, and discover a lot about what they want in life! Fantastic writing as always from Sophia Kinsella, and much deeper than it seems on the surface!
A delightful romcom telling the story of two people that have gotten to a point of no return in their professional lives, whose circumstances intersect at a resort from their childhood. Funny with a lot of heart!
Half this book is super funny and solid 4-star worth, the second half, however... I didn't go back to check, but I feel I've said the same thing of another Kinsella book before... Anyway, doing the Math, I'd say this is a 3.5, rounded up to 4 anyway because it's not like the second half ruined all the good the beginning had built.
Sasha needs to go on a wellness break after realizing she's suffering from burnout thanks to the horrible work environment her boss has created. Her mother sends her to the place where she spent most summers growing up, this time she'll get to stay at the luxurious hotel so she can follow the 20 steps to recovery from the app her mother found. Getting there, the hotel is not as prestigious anymore, and she needs to share the beach with a cranky guy who she's seen make a child cry. Also how can she swim when the water is so cold?
I laughed so many times in the beginning. The staff of the hotel don't sound very real, but you don't really mind it, because it's all hilarious. But it's right around the 50% mark that this 'surrealness' of the story start bothering you. Not because of the staff, mind you, they're still too precious for me to find fault there. It's hard to explain without giving spoilers, but let's say the development and conclusion were a little too dreamy for me to buy it.
The romance was okay at least. There also some key there that turns to suddenly when we were in a slow-burn enemies-to-lovers speed, but I can see why they needed to move on to the next step quickly. A lot happens after that, and that made them an interesting couple, in a way I hadn't expected. Not the best, not the most memorable, but it made sense.
It's a quick read, with lovable characters, funny situations, coming from a place most readers will be able to identify if not from having gone through it themselves, from friends who have. It's not my favorite Kinsella, but it's among the good ones.
Honest review based on an ARC provided by Netgalley. Many thanks to the publisher for this opportunity.
I always love when I get to read a new Sophie Kinsella. And I love a good re-invention story. I related to Sasha feeling burned out and making a run for it to the Cornish coast, it sounds like the perfect solution. As always, there's a lovable cast of quirky, kind-hearted characters, and a great love interest. I appreciate that in her books, there's always comedy and romance, but also nothing too steamy. This may not be my favorite Sophie Kinsella book (Can you Keep a Secret?, doesn't get any better than that), but this is a fun, engaging, real-life story of nostalgia and self-discovery that makes me want to run off to the coast all by myself for a few weeks.
Thanks NetGalley for this ARC. For me this was a very typical Kinsella. Light diversion from heavier storylines.
A great read for the beach or for when you need a nice break. Just sit back and enjoy.
Sasha Worth delights all while a guest at the Devon beach resort in the town that she spent summers as a child. She was sent here to unwind, relax, decompress, eat healthy, and figure out she is.
It is one of this authors best books yet, a fun read with romance, tears, joy and laughter.
I received this book as an ARC, but all opinions are my own. Thank you to Net Galley, Random House and Sophie Kinsella for the opportunity to read it early.
Sasha snaps under pressure at her satirically hellish (or eerily realistic, you be the judge) job. This leads her to doctors orders of 3 weeks off work, and she chooses to spend them on the beach..in the winter…at a rundown hotel well past it’s hay day. Add in a hot burnout buddy, the best hotel staff you’ll find, and Terry the philosopher/surf instructor, and it is a leave of absence to be remembered.
This was a work of beach read art. I just loved the witty, quirky, inner monologues so much. The British flair/word choice just adds to this, and chef’s kiss. It definitely exudes the energy I have come to expect in a Sophie Kinsella novel. I had a rip-roaring great time reading this book. So fun, so heartwarming, so layered. I didn’t think that it was overtly cheesy, and yet it still tugged on my heartstrings big time. The characters are relatable and real, and the setting was vivid and adorable. A very solid five stars from me.
I haven't read a Sophie Kinsella book in ages so was excited to receive this advance copy from NetGalley. This wasn't a heavy read but still more serious than Kinsella books of years past. I enjoyed the premise, settings and characters.
The Burnout" by Sophie Kinsella is a delightful romantic comedy that revolves around Sasha, a relatable and burnt-out professional seeking solace and self-discovery. Tired of the corporate grind and in dire need of a break, Sasha escapes to a nostalgic seaside resort only to find it in disarray and occupied by Finn, a grumpy and stressed-out individual. As they navigate their shared space and conflicting approaches to dealing with burnout, a curious turn of events forces them to engage in heartfelt conversations about their lives, lost passions, and the undeniable spark between them.
The book's strength lies in its relatability, portraying Sasha's struggles and her quest for self-care amid a stress-filled world. Kinsella's skillful blend of humor and relatable themes captivates readers, immersing them in the charming town of Rilston Bay. While the connection between Sasha and Finn might feel less authentic at times, the overall narrative weaves an enchanting story of self-discovery and rejuvenation.
"The Burnout" is a must-read for those seeking a heartwarming and comical tale that addresses the importance of self-care and finding joy amidst life's challenges.
A typical Sophie Kinsella but I don't type that as a bad thing... I mean that she constantly delivers exactly what you want her to, and The Burnout is exactly her style.
I absolutely devoured this book. I love it so much! Between the laughter it incited, and the burned out aspect resonated with me as well. Their journey from energies to friends to lovers had me hooked!
This was lovely and painful at the same time. Here we have a mature Kinsella heroine: sad, overwhelmed, self-sabotaging, going on a mid-winter journey to heal. Anyone expecting the light-hearted and ironically ditzy heroines of the Shopaholic series or some of Kinsella's alter-ego Madeleine Wickham's protagonists might find themselves disappointed. This book deals with serious grief, dementia, and hopelessness, and, while there is lots of the absurd humor Kinsella fans love, The Burnout is not as lough-out-loud funny as her other works. It's perfect for a readership emerging from the pandemic, though, so it actually reflects the current Zeitgeist (even if it's depressing).
Overall, The Burnout is warm, endlessly charming, and well-plotted, and, best of all, the hero, Finn, actually has a realistic and multi-faceted personality, even if his doorbusting and refusal to articulate the source of his burnout raise some serious red flags for me. The mystery plot, Sasha and Finn's absurd first few encounters on the beach, and the Rilston's eccentric staff and interior give the novel the necessary levity. Still, there's some heavy stuff there, so be warned.
Thanks to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group/Dial Press for providing me with an ARC for this title.
A new Sophie Kinsella romantic comedy? YES PLEASE! I absolutely adore her stories, and I have all of them in kindle version and a majority on audiobook, and I can't wait to get this one on audiobook too! The characters were relatable and likeable, and of course the writing was spot on and enjoyable. With moments that had me literally laughing out loud and touching moments, Sophie Kinsella really knows how to tug at your heartstrings and wrapping it up in a nice little bow.
I look forward to Sophie Kinsella’s book release every year! The Burnout was a great read. A wonderful story with complex characters looking to reinvent themselves and come out on the other side after a trip to the beach town of Rilston Bay. The writing was super funny as always, and had me laughing out loud at plenty of scenes! There were definitely some sweet and touching parts in this book that I enjoyed as well. Pick up The Burnout for your next read!
Such a fun read. Like everything I've read by this author I was hooked instantly and couldn't put it down. The characters are relatable and I found myself thinking I've had moments just like Sasha and Finn. There were many laugh out loud moments as well as some incredibly sweet heart warming moments.
As a huge fan of Kinsella's novels, I was really excited to receive an ARC of her latest work, The Burnout. Talk about a laugh out loud, relatable story that will have you reading late into the night. I just LOVED getting to know Sasha and Finn, as they tried to navigate taking a break from their lives following work-related burnout scenarios. The characters were such fun to get to know and root for. I really enjoyed this story and related to feeling burned out, stressed out, and panicked about it all. Definitely a must-read for Kinsella fans.
Sophie Kinsella is an absolute delight. The Burnout - filled with a super relatable character and hilarious moments - is my idea of a perfect romantic comedy.
There are so many true LOL IRL moments that I lost track, as the main character finds herself in precarious situations. These funny moments offer a great contrast to what otherwise might be a very serious topic (burnout).
To start with our main character, Sasha, what I appreciated most about her is her relatability. I think we’ve all had those moments where life feels like it’s gone bottom up and we wish we could run away or reinvent ourselves completely. To see that reflected was so endearing.
The romance between Sasha and Finn? Heartwarming, sweet, and likely to make you cry happy tears by the end. I loved that both characters found each other at a moment in life where they were both at their wits end. By returning to their childhood vacation spot, they heal and grow together from the strains of working life.
GOSH! Not to mention the entire cast of characters is a delight. There are so many scenes with supporting characters that either had me tearing up with sentimental feels, or tearing up from laughing so hard.
Can’t say enough great things about The Burnout. Indeed, you could say it’s a fantastical, feel-good escape from the pressures of your own 9-5. Bottom line, if you love romantic comedies, you need to read this. ESPECIALLY if you've ever experienced burnout yourself!
My thanks to the publisher, Netgalley and Sophie Kinsella for the ARC! A full review will be published on my blog on or before 10/3/23, and I'll edit to provide a link once available.
