When bartender Avalon Nash dares enter the remains of Tranquility’s infamous haunted lodge, she unleashes deadly secrets waiting to come back to life. It’s Halloween and Avalon is on the outs with her boyfriend, her cop friend and her best friend. When she ventures into the ruins of an old lodge above the town, she uncovers evidence of murders that have haunted the locals for decades. Then a new friend, in town for a high school reunion, vanishes and she must battle the murderous danger that continues to stalk Tranquility to this day. This is the 4th in the series and now I will have to go back and read the other three! This a borderline cozy but has a bit more of an edge so if the idea of reading a cozy doesn't appeal, I highly recommend this book anyway. You won't be sorry.
Death from Beyond by Sharon Linnéa is the fourth in the Bartender's Guide to Murder. The story of Avalon Nash and all the characters and murderers she encounters in her job as bartender in Tranquility are great reading for anyone wanting a good cozy series. With the addition of drink recipes, these books are a perfect vacation read.
I've enjoyed all of the books in The Bartender's Guide to Murder series. This is the 4th book and I've come to really like Avalon and the other characters. The setting is great and I love how the author sets the story to have some elements of a cozy mystery with also having an edgier feel to it. I guess I could say it feels like a cozy mystery with a bite to it. I'm looking forward to reading more in this series.
Death from Beyond by Sharon Linnéa and Narrated by Abbie Pfaff is the forth book in the Bartenders Guide to Murder series and the first book I have read or listened to, so I didn't know what to expect. However, I found it hard to get into, it may of been that I have not read the three other books within this series. Sadly it did not grip me enough to go back and read the other books. It did not have the sparkle or me to want to read and catch on the series, like other series of books have done in the past.
The narrator Abbie Pfaff was good.......
Bog thank you to Netgalley for my ARC Audiobook for an honest review.
I have to say that I love this series. It’s set near Lake Placid near the old Olympic site. Avalon is a bartender/detective. One of the things I love about this series is the diversity of the characters. They’re a little bit of everything, maybe some a little more famous than others, but a true mix as any good group of friends should be. This is set during the Halloween season and has a little bit of ghosts and a dying woman who comes back for her high school reunion and goes missing. And don’t forget all the cocktail/mocktail recipes.
I went in thinking this was a ghost story but it's not. It's about a racist small town who attack ppl. I felt the main character was lacking and the story predictable.
I simply loved this book!!
I didn't know it was a series but the book works on it's own. I do plan to go back and read the previous three books. I loved Avalon Nash as a heroine and I loved all the characters in this book.
Sharon Linnea writes from the heart, at least that is what it feels like. She has something to say and expertly weaves it into her characters and her plot.
I also love the cocktails at the end of each chapter (with a tie-in to that chapter).
This book (to me) feels like a cross between a cozy mystery and a "regular" thriller.
I want more!
This is the fourth in the series that follows Avalon, a bartender with a detective flair. This is the first book I picked up in the series, and while I wish I had read the others for better context, I didn't feel completely lost reading this installment first. I found Avalon to be a really interesting character, with a lot of interesting sides to her. She absolutely likes to stick her nose where it doesn't belong, but that seems to be the whole fun! The story overall reads like a cozy mystery, a little fluffy and not too scary or stressful. There are parts of the story that seem a bit far fetched or unrealistic, but nothing is taken too seriously. I enjoyed reading it and would absolutely pick up other books by the author. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to provide my honest review.
This wasn't what I was expecting but I still enjoyed it. I was expecting a more eerie story and it wasn't as eerie as I thought it would. The characters were still interesting and it kept my interest. I enjoyed it for what it was and I would read other books by this author. Special Thank You to Sharon Linnea, Arundel Publishing, and NetGalley for allowing me to read a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
Avalon is a transplanted bartender in Tranquility, New York. Rejecting her parent’s visible and over the top lifestyle brought her, unexpectedly, to this town she’s grown to love. This fourth book in the series is another page turner that delves into a broad range of both current and historical issues to solve the mystery of who killed Sandy and why.
Avalon is a great protagonist. Her job and her natural curiosity give her a view of life that is unique and accepting, in more ways than one.
Because of some of the subject matter and how the series is written, I don’t consider this a ‘cozy’ mystery but do consider Ms. Linnea an excellent writer. This book delves into racism, familial rejection, gender identity, the ability to communicate with ghosts, and much more. An added bonus are the specialty cocktail recipes at the end of each chapter, compliments of Ms. Jamielyn Brydalski, mixologist. Enjoy!
At the time I requested this, I did not realize that it was the 4th book in a series. I didn't have too much trouble following the main character relationships. I did find the title somewhat misleading, no spoilers.
A 10th year high school reunion over Halloween, what could go wrong? Avalon Nash is a bartender in Tranquility, someone leaves a suitcase in the bar where she is working. This individual, here for the reunion, Sandy, turns up dead. Avalon and her gang investigate. In the course of this investigation many of the town's secrets come to light especially after Avalon joins her friends and goes to the haunted lodge. At the lodge, evidence of past murders are found.
The best part of the book were the mixology recipes. I will go back and read the previous books that will provide more backstory. The book was OK, but not one I would give a high recommendation.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher, Arundel Publishing, for an ARC. The review is my own.
I thought this book sounded really interesting. However it wasn’t quite what I was expecting. Perhaps I would have liked it more if I had read the previous ones. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the early copy
This was a great story about murder however it great information on change and acceptance. The characters were well described and story was well written.
I like this series, I have read them all so far. Great lead character and other characters and I love the setting. Another good read that kept me entertained.
Death from Beyond, by Sharon Linne'a, is part of the The Bartender's Guide to Murder suspense series. It's an entertaining, yet nerve-racking, fast paced mystery with a whole lot of heart. It even has yummy cocktail and mocktail recipes at the end of each chapter. This whodunit is perfect for those who like energetic characters, mysteries inside of mysteries and learning new drink recipes.
I went into this book expecting to be bored by a simple, small town mystery story. But I was pleasantly surprised. It opens with a bartender that I came to like as a main character, a ghost mystery, a murder, and a plot point about the teand community that I never knew existed: disrespect in funerals and burials. Overall I enjoyed reading this book. I didn't read the earlier books in the series but I just might now. The ending was very pulse pounding and had me hooked to find out how it would end up.
This was my first read from this author. I really enjoyed this book. I will be reading more from this series and rereading this one
Avalon meets a new customer at the bar. Her name is Sandy, and she is in town for a high school reunion. She leaves her suitcase to walk to her home so her father can pick it up in the car. A group of young people want Avalon to go with them to investigate Appleton Lodge, supposedly haunted, on Halloween. When Avalon gets to the bar the next morning, she finds that Sandy's suitcase is still there, she takes it to Sandy's house. However, Sandy's parents tell her they have no daughter, and drive away.
Then, when Avalon and her friends go to Appleton Lodge, they realize there is still a lot of historical racial harassment. They find a hidden drawer with trophies from historic racial murders, and then they realize someone is coming after them. The man sets a fire in the Lodge, and they are locked in the downstairs room. Will help come or will they find a way out before the fire gets to them?
It turns out that Sandy started out as a boy, Frank Wilcox. Through high school he had played on the football team. It was after he left town that he transitioned to Sandy. It turns out that several of Sandy's high school friends are not very understanding. Meanwhile Sandy's husband Anders Evans comes to the bar looking for Sandy, but she has disappeared.
Avalon works with her cop friend, Mike Spaulding to try to find out what happened to Sandy. However, there are a couple of tough cops from Sandy's high school class who are very prejudiced about racial differences as well as sexual changes, and Avalon and her friends are in danger.
This is a great addition to the series. I thank Netgalley and Arundel Publishing for an ARC.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Thank you, NetGalley for this ARC.
‘Death from Beyond: An Avalon Nash Mystery,’ is the first book I read by the author. This is the 4th book in the Bartenders Guide to Murder series and I probably should have read the rest of the series first. It can be read as a stand-alone, but I missed some backstory. I expected more paranormal activities but enjoyed the storyline. It is a very slow-burn book, which didn't bother me, but if you are not a fan of slow-burn stories this book might not be it for you. The author did a nice job with the character building. I liked the different plots, but sometimes it felt a bit overwhelming and it read like the author needed to ‘cover’ everything. Because it was that slow I didn't feel a lot of tension, but I was curious how the story would end. A nice touch was the cocktail recipes…I do love my cocktails. It was a nice and light read.
I really enjoyed the book. That being said, I did not know it was part of a series when I read it, but still was good to read. I will be reading more from this Author and I'll be starting this series from the beginning and re reading this book as well when I get to it.
