While this wasn't bad, it also wasn't great to me. I never really felt any attachment or relatability to the characters. Russ seemed sweet and genuine but then it didn't seem in line with his character to initiate a one night stand? Rory was also clearly trying to find herself and become a better person or something but still go held up on not being wanted or given enough attention from her dad. I was confused why neither of them had good relationships with their siblings. It seemed just like a lot of missed communication opportunities.
Overall, I think setting theses stories around college-aged kids seems a little unbelievable? I totally understand that everyone matures differently a lot of people had more robust college experiences than I did in the personal lives realm, but the types of relationships and issues addressed in this book seem a little too intense and unrelatable for the average person. They are too adult in a sense? Maybe I'm just wrong and naive. I personally didn't know anyone in college who lived in an actually nice house with roommates (boys especially) that kept things tidy or had security locks on their bedroom doors. It also seemed like this summer camp let the counselors get away with way too much inappropriate behavior? As someone who worked as a camp counselor for multiple summers, there is so much red tape and policies and legalities to follow when dealing with children that half the stuff talked about around the camp just wouldn't happen.
I still enjoyed the overall storyline and having the focus be on a different person in the Maple Hills group!
This was such a cute summer camp romance! I loved the character dynamics and watching their relationship grow throughout the story.
Wanted to love this one. I actually liked it more than Icebreaker, but it just felt really immature and cheesy. I didn’t feel any connection to the characters at all. But the plot was a LOT more believable than the first book!
This book was just ok. It didn’t really have a plot, but it wasn’t too boring so it wasn’t a bad read. There were so many side characters I couldn’t keep them straight. The one “fight” they had was 90% into the book and nothing even happened. I think this book was just too long. I didn’t mind Russ but Aurora was just… meh. Also I wanted to read it and feel like I was at summer camp but that didn’t even add anything to the story. I do still want to read the first book in this series.
This book had me in the first half. I loved golden-retriever BF energy Russ. I loved snarky Aurora. I was attacked but also seen by all of the daddy issues present that I could relate to. (But seriously it should come with trigger warnings for people like me lol)
I’m not sure what happened along the way, but 57% in I thought the story was done and it kind of dragged on with these random “twists” that lasted a page before going back to filler. It was like a formula: Russ doesn’t open up, Aurora opens up too much, they have sex, they give each other speeches about how amazing they are etc etc. we went through the loop like 6 times at 75% in I just started skimming.
I don’t understand how the ending felt rushed but also still dragged on. There was a severe shift in focus somewhere in the middle and it left a lot to be desired.
Overall it was a fine read, I feel like it could have been so much better if it was 200 pages instead of nearly 400.
As a huge fan of Icebreaker, I was both nervous and excited for Wildfire to come out. I’m so glad to say that this book exceeded my expectations and that I loved it even more than Icebreaker. Russ and Aurora felt so real, and the emotions and problems that they went through could happen to anybody. I loved seeing both of their developments throughout the summer, and they were both able to get through so much of their own internal battles. They were truly what the other needed in their lives, and they were able to trust each other and lean on one another when they thought that they would never find that person. This book was so wonderful and I cannot wait to see what’s to come from Hannah Grace in the future.
I liked Icebreaker. Actually, I loved Icebreaker. But Holy Cow, Wildfire blows that book out of the water! Russ and Rory were so lovable, I could read a dozen books about them! There was the perfect amount of humor, spice, and tension. This is a book that I will read over and over again, and absolutely recommend to all of my friends! Thank you NetGalley, the publisher, and Hannah Grace for the arc in exchange for my honest review!
I had to DNF @ 31% - the writing style of the author is just not for me. This may connect with new adult readers because of the style, but the frivolous thoughts and repetition of the main characters is just too much for my taste. The writing just reads very juvenile.
Hannah Grace strikes again! I was a little bit worried that we were not getting someone who was really prominent in Icebreaker, but I really didn’t need to worry. Russ was such a great leading man in this book. Hannah Grace is so masterful in writing such sweet and devoted male main characters. I liked that in this book, we were able to get to see a more soft-spoken, more introverted male lead. Aurora was such a great match for Russ. Although I felt her character was not my favorite kind of female lead, she was still enjoyable enough to spend a lot of time in her head. We get to see two young adults fall in love and deal with real life issues that a lot of people deal with (although maybe not as many who can relate to having an F1 team owner), especially as they are navigating their own feelings. The camp was such a fun setting.
Overall this book is a triumph and I will be recommending this book.
4.5 stars
I am someone who didn't know what to expect when I read Icebreaker, but then it automatically became a comfort read. I had the same feeling when I read this book. It was so fun to read and some of the most amazing, heartfelt characters that I have read in awhile. Russ is such a sweetie, and I feel that his character is so real and comforting. I like how they have their secret thing, which is adorable. I feel that this book very much holds up with the original and I am so excited for the next book.
Okay Icebreaker is still my number 1, but this had more story less spice so I can’t compare. Wildfire was still filled with spice, daddy issues, and longing. Our main couple has a one night stand and end up at the same summer camp for the summer! How long do they last without breaking the no fraternizing rule? Read to find out! Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for the opportunity to read in exchange for a review.
A spicy followup to the popular Icebreaker book by Hannah Grace. I really enjoyed the setting for this romance because it was so different from your average rom-com. I found it brought a breath of fresh air to the genre. I was immediately drawn in from the first chapter, which is a favorite of mine. I love the feeling of starting a new book and immediately being excited about reading it. There were some plus elements of this romance in terms of family drama and I would highly recommend!
I have to start out by saying that I haven't read Icebreaker and requested this book out of curiosity because of the first book's popularity.
There were really enjoyable parts about Wildfire. The way that the characters are a found family and show up for each other is so satisfying. The humourous scenes were great. I enjoyed how Aurora wound Russ up about not knowing what a puck looked like and how he couldn't let that go. Other aspects were problematic and really stood out.
I don't need male characters saying "you're taking it so well" or "good girl" in sex scenes. It's crass and vulgar. Aurora may get off on praise but let's not make it sound like porn. It's such a complete opposite turn from when they check in with each other during the lap dance to ensure that things are consensual. It's conveyed right away that Russ is not a typical bro, so having him speak that way doesn't match his character.
Aurora and Russ experience parental neglect and addiction through their fathers. They believe they are unlovable. Aurora resorts to seeking attention and external validation. Russ bottles everything up and doesn't deal with his emotions. They show each other what it's like to be wanted and treated decently but it never goes beyond that. I would have traded a number of scenes to have them confess more to each other and actually work on themselves. Russ tells Aurora a bit about his dad and they become obsessed with each other, but their issues don't get explored again until the last bit of the novel. There needed to be a more even balance between the romance, camp happenings and parental issues. I would rather the story didn't include the parental neglect and addiction over barely showing Aurora and Russ work through their issues. The story works without it. The amends conversation between Russ and his dad was well done and allowed us to see Russ' thoughts. I wished Russ and Aurora could've communicated on a deeper level like that. They had better conversations with JJ, Xander and Emilia than with each other.
This was fun to read at times but also frustrating when the friends had deeper conversations than the main characters had with each other.
Hannah Grace is a fantastic author! I loved so much about this book, while being a light and airy romance novel it also hits some harder topics in a fantastic way that gives more to the characters story that makes you want to cheer them on even more!
I AM AMAZED BY THIS BOOK!
I believe that this will be in my top 5 favorite books this year.
Brief summary: Aurora and Russ, having previous history together from a one night stand, are challenged to spend the entire summer together at a camp were they have to contend with the feeling that they left unresolved. Their forced-proximity and family issues draw them together overtime which makes for the most addicting read.
For background, I didn’t read Icebreaker before picking up this book, so I had no expectations of whether I would like this or not. But let me tell you, by 25%, knew that I needed to buy both immediately. I went to Barnes on my lunch break and bought both, which absolutely made my day! I can’t explain how wonderful Russ the mmc is and how heartwarming he was to read about. I love both Aurora and Russ, and I felt seen through them from their struggles, so nice reading about them and how they handed their adversity. I am definitely reading Icebreakers next and I just adore Hannah Grace’s writing!
Not quite done this book but i wanted to give my review so far ! This is my first Hannah Grace novel, I know it's book two but I was curious to see what all the hype was about and the books don't exactly follow. I really enjoyed the time the author took with developing the characters and the relationship between Rory and Russ. Also absolutely adorable names for the two main characters. I think so far it is a really great boon, I've already purchased it and begun recommending it to my clients as a must read romance. Especially for the fact that it's not a cheesy romance it's a completely unique story from what I've read so far. The sex scenes are well written and not too dirty and dark so I also enjoyed that. I will definitely pick up another Hannah grace novel
I absolutely adored Icebreaker and couldn't wait for this one to release! I was so thankful to receive an ARC copy of Wildfire and I was not disappointed!!!
In this second installment in the Maple Hills series, we get a book centered around Russ whom we get to know a bit in Icebreaker. This is not a hockey romance so don't go in expecting it. This story takes place at a summer camp where Russ and Rory reunite after a one night stand. Because of the camp rules, they decide to be friends. Well... you can only imagine how long that lasts lol.
Hannah is a great author and wrote a fantastic story that the reader will quickly devour. I highly recommend picking this one up!
This book was everything I didn't know I needed! As someone who went to a sleep away camp as a kid and that was one of my happy places, it was nice to get a romance with the camp counselors. Aurora and Russ's love story was so heart warming and thank goodness no miscommunication (after the first one, way to be self-aware!) and no third act break up. Also loved that our FMC was an avid reader and nice job of mentioning two series I enjoy (Twisted series and Dreamland Billionaires). Such a wonderful addition to the Maple Hills series and i liked this more than the first book. For those who didn't like the couple in Icebreaker give Russ and Aurora a try, even though Russ doesn't share.
Wildfire by Hannah Grace was a great addition to the Maple Hills series! Aurora and Russ were very relatable characters and even though the relationship started with a one night stand, over the course of the summer they spend a lot of time together and come to realize they have a lot in common and help each other with through some rough moments. I really liked that most of the book takes place at a camp that meant so much to Aurora (Rory) and I so wanted their supportive and hilarious friends as my own! It is so refreshing to read a series that the male main characters are the ones seeking a relationship with the female main characters instead of the other way around. I can’t wait for the next book!
Wildfire is a really cute romance novel. It’s a good follow up to Icebreaker, but I wished I liked it as much as Stassie and Nate’s story. aside from comparing it to Maple Hill #1, I really liked Russ and Aurora. I really enjoyed getting to learn more about Russ in this sequel. I wish it was more of a slow burn, but I enjoyed reading about the main characters working through their problems together. My favorite thing about the Maple Hills series is how friendship always shines through.
