Another gripping read in the Kelly Porter series and it never disappoints. Enjoyed the personal element to this case for Kelly and feel we're really getting to know her as the series progresses.
Drought hits the Lake District, uncovering a skeleton at the bottom of Thirlmere reservoir. The case quickly becomes personal for DI Kelly Porter when she discovers it’s the remains of an old classmate, missing for over twenty years. Then a day later, another body is found in a caravan park, its head broken and bloody. Kelly suspects these two crimes are linked. But if she’s right, that means there’s a ruthless killer somewhere in her community – someone who will do anything to keep the truth buried. This is a dark and gripping mystery. I was up all night finishing this because I could not put it down. Lots of twists and a very satisfying ending.
Book 11 in the DI Kelly Porter series. Another good addition to the series. Lots of twists and turns which kept you guessing right to the end !
Very similar to Angela Marsons , who I love. I read thru it very quickly. I’m giving it 4 stars. I’m definitely going to look for this author again
This is the eleventh book in this brilliant series featuring Detective Kelly Porter. It makes more interesting reading as it is set in the Lake District. The Lake District is in the middle of a drought and the water levels in the lakes are really low. This leads to the discovery of a skeleton in Thirlmere Reservoir. Kelly is shocked to find after extensive examination that it is an old school friend of hers, Brian Miller, who disappeared over twenty years ago. Whilst investigating this case a body is found under a caravan in a holiday park. It was the body of Jason Cooper, another one of Kelly’s schools friends and one of the last people to see Brian alive. She realises that somehow the cases must be linked but more shocks are in store as it appears that the original police investigation into Brian’s disappearance had been very badly handled. Also Kelly was horrified to learn that her father had been leading the investigation and questions his findings. This case brings very painful memories for Kelly as she has to interview more of her school peers and realises that they know more than they are letting one. This was another brilliant read that had me totally gripped. I look forward to the next book in the series.
Thanks to Netgalley and Canelo books for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book,
A case soon turns personal for DI Kelly Porter as a discovered skeleton is identified as former classmate who went missing when they were teenagers. When a second former classmate is discovered recently murdered the team have to establish if the cases are linked or not. Soon the lines of inquiry are casting doubts not only on the teacher she respected but also the man she grew up thinking was her father.
Some how every book in the DI Kelly Porter series is better than the one before! It was fascinating to see Kelly questioning everything she thought she knew and re-evaluate her younger years as she worked on the case.
Also that ending! I sensed something was coming but that still caught be off guard!
With three of my first reads of the year being this series I’m now all caught up with the series now so I can’t wait for the next one to come out later this year!
A page turning tale that is as much about the past as the present. DI Kelly Porter returns with a new tale about a cold case that brings back haunting memories for all involved.
I did enjoy Silent Bones, the story is very well written and you don't need to have read the previous books to be able to know what is going on. It is all explained well. For some reason this took me a little bit longer to read than usual, maybe it was because I didn't have the connection with the characters that I am sure you would get from reading the previous books.
I did still enjoy this book though and I would definitely check out the previous books.
This is book number 11 in the series. The main character is likeable and easy to connect to. I cant seem to put these books down.
A gripping tale that is as much about the past as the present. DI Kelly Porter returns with a new tale about a cold case that brings back haunting memories for all involved.
Kelly was a good girl in school she stayed away from the cool kids, she kept her head down and did not rub people up the wrong way yet she remained approachable and knew when the cool kids went bad.
In 1997, a young boy called Brian disappears and during a drought in the Thirlmere part of the Lake District, a body is found in a reservoir. The body is found to be that of young Brian who never came home one night.
The case spins on the discovery that some people are not letting on to know as much as they originally suggested. From the teacher, Mr. Thompson who hangs out with children at the weekend and may or may not been a drug supplier to those same pupils to Michelle the owner of a Holiday camp who took pity upon a local no-good Jason Cooper.
The discovery of a second body turns the case upside down with two murders to solve in a small town; coupled with accusations that Kelly's father, John Porter, renowned local policeman was not the salt of the earth he led people to believe.
As well as having to solve a case, Kelly also has a young family to look after and this follows familiar tropes of Canelo Crime releases from Lynch's contemporaries (MJ Lee and Marion Todd) who also have domestic routines to account for. This stable of writers make clear that law enforcement have problems at home to deal with as well as the crimes to solve - and this balance or openness of relationships certainly makes the characters more relatable and sympathetic.
At times highly enthralling and page-turning, this is my first read of a Lynch crime thriller and certainly shall not be the last.
Good book! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one! This book had a bit of everything! It had suspense, Action, intrigue, mystery, murder, revenge, a great who done it, great plot twist, and some crazy twists and turns! The storyline was very interesting and kept me glued to my Kindle! I definitely recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
Quite refreshing to read a thriller that isn't the same story rewritten with different characters, even though the characters have the exact same hardnose, rebel attitude. There's always that love interest that they have been on and off with forever but now they are taking a break but by the end they fall back in love. Yea, same old song and dance. I really enjoyed this due to the twists and varying characters. The crime scene and autopsy descriptions were believable and didn't hold back on the gory goodness. The author brings the story to life through well written commentary between characters and a solid foundation of scenery. A thriller that actually thrills is something to be proud of in this age of everyone hopping on the psychological thriller bandwagon.
Love this series of Kelly Porter books…she’s down to earth, thorough, and a great boss. This case takes her back to,her teen years and schoolmates , linking to murders past and present.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book it was great. The whole series is great and this one didn’t disappoint. I love how the characters are growing and developing and the storyline was complex enough to keep me thinking and guessing. A very good read highly deriving of 5 stars.
I love these books and reading about Kelly Porter , her team , her life and the amazing descriptions of the lake district . This new book certainly was up there with her best and I really enjoyed it
When a skeleton is discovered by the banks of a lake they soon realise that the bones are quite old , Kelly's team start the investigation only for another more recent murder to be included too , are these cases linked in some way ? That's up too Kelly to find out . Another fabulous read
It has been a long hot summer in the Lake District & the reservoirs & lakes are at a record breaking low. When bones are revealed in Thirlmere Water, Kelly Porter finds herself thrown back to her teenage years. The victim was one of the 'Cool Set' at school. A set looked at from afar by Kelly who was never sure if she wanted to be part of it. The investigation puts her in touch with people she hasn't thought or spoken to for years- even though they are all local. It also forces her to look closely at the investigations of the man she grew up thinking was her father.
I am always delighted to see another 'Kelly Porter' book. I have followed them from the start & in each one it is good to get to know the main character better. This was a twisty tale that led down dead ends & as usual I didn't guess whodunnit! I was glued to the page & am already looking forward to the next one. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.
My Rating: 2.5 stars out of 5
I came into this novel having not read any of the prior ones because the premise caught my attention.
And here is what I learned.
The author tells the story in such a way that you don't need to have read any of the others in order to grasp what is happening. There was just enough background given for each of the main players that I felt I understood them and their relationships to one another (although having two female characters named Kelly and Kate working close together did get confusing more than once as I sometimes forgot just who was actually in charge).
The second thing I learned is that too much detail spoils the plot. Seriously. It was a good story, but there were just so many details about absolutely everything that I struggled to stay invested. I don't need to know step by step every thought a character has or every movement that they make. This is especially true when I had things figured out before the detectives. There were times when I found myself wanting to throw my Kindle (instead, I settled for closing it and setting it aside time and time again) because I found myself so frustrated with how things were going.
Please, authors, I beg you, if you put that much detail into your characters every thought and movement, please make them smarter?
At the end of the day, this one was not for me for the reasons listed above. However, I can see where it would appeal to others, especially people who have been reading this series longer and therefore have a better understanding of these characters.
DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.
Silent Bones is a gripping crime thriller that takes place in the picturesque Lake District in the UK. The story revolves around DI Kelly Porter, a determined and tenacious detective who is investigating a mysterious case involving a skeleton found at the bottom of the Thirlmere reservoir during a drought.
The novel combines elements of police procedural, murder mystery, and psychological suspense. As the investigation unfolds, secrets and long-buried truths come to light, creating a tense and atmospheric atmosphere throughout the narrative. The Lake District setting adds to the eerie and haunting ambience, creating a sense of isolation and foreboding.
The story delves into themes of betrayal, deception, and the dark secrets that can lurk beneath the surface of seemingly idyllic communities. As DI Kelly Porter digs deeper into the case, she must navigate through a web of lies and hidden motives to uncover the truth behind the skeleton's identity and the circumstances of its death.
The characters are well-developed and multi-dimensional, with complex backstories and personal struggles that add depth to the story. DI Kelly Porter is a compelling and relatable protagonist, driven by a strong sense of justice and a determination to bring closure to the victim's family.
Silent Bones offers an enthralling and atmospheric crime thriller that will keep readers on the edge of their seats until the final revelation. Rachel Lynch's skilful storytelling and attention to detail make for a compelling read that will appeal to fans of suspenseful and well-crafted mysteries.
DO Kelly Porter book 11.

Kelly suspects these two crimes are linked. But how can they be when so much time has passed. Digging into the past has Kelly questioning her own memories of that time.
This is a cracking page turner that had me totally hooked. I highly recommend this series to all crime genre fans.
