Evocative of place and contemporarily relevant, the latest book in the Kelly Porter series brings the English Lake District and Cumbria to vibrant life for the reader. It's easy to visualise the locations, and the author creates a menacing and suspenseful atmosphere using the area's stark beauty. The mystery is complete and readable as a standalone, but this a powerful detective series that has evolved since its inception and every book is worth reading. The discovery of skeletal remains in a reservoir in the Lakes and a subsequent death lead back to Kelly's past, and her personal and professional life collide. The cast of believable characters makes this story a page-turner. I like this novel's characterisation, the clever plot, the Lake District setting, and the sense of danger.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
3.5/5 stars
This book is about DI Kelly Porter and her team investigating a body being found and a subsequent body turning up, revealing hidden and dark secrets from within the community.
What worked for this book was that the first couple pages really hooked the reader. This is important because you want to be drawn into a book by the writing style and story setup. Even though this was the first book I had read in this series, it was easy to connect to storyline and characters even without reading the first set of books. Though I do plan to start from the beginning.
Although the book did have an intriguing storyline and characters especially Kelly, Kate and Ted, I found that the sometimes there was bit too much description with some of the character or scene setups.
Overall, it was a good read, and I would say this book is for people who love mystery – suspense novels and those that enjoy intriguing characters.
Thank you to Netgalley and Canelo Digital Publishing for the ARC.

I am a huge fan of Rachel Lynch and I was delighted to get the opportunity to read her newest book Silent Bones. This was of the most gripping and thrilling books I have read this year. I read it over the course of a day as I simply couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait to read more from the author in the future.
One of my favourite police procedural series is back with DI Kelly Porter in the thick of it when a Skeleton is found at the bottom of Thirlmere reservoir. Things get a bit close to comfort for Kelly when the investigation takes her back to her old school and leads to her crossing paths with some old classmates and teachers. When another body shows up that links to the old Skeleton, Kelly realises that this case isn't as old as she thought.
This is book eleven and it still feels fresh and, although the main story could be read as a standalone, I certainly recommend the entire series to ensure you get the full effect of the side stories, particular Kelly's family life.
I like this series with te main detective Kelly. Set in the Lake district , there have been a lot of murders in the area . The countryside is well described and I like that Kelly's personal life is also described . It is part of a series and I have read others so know the characters but I think it would be ok if you hadn't . An interesting case which has roots in Kelly's own schooldays 24 years earlier, I thought it got a bit confusing towards the conclusion.
A great read though and I look forward to reading more
Thanks to Net Galley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review
Another brilliant book in my favourite crime series.
I adore the Kelly Porter books and have enjoyed watching her character develop across the series.
In Silent Bones, things land a little closer to home for Kelly as she finds herself investigating the murder of an old classmate, where several others are suspects and there are some starling revelations that make Kelly question her past.
I loved the addition of the historical crime and the way these two investigations linked together.
As always, I loved the personal relationships in this one, seeing Johnny and Kelly back together and enjoying time with their daughter was lovely.
This was a brilliant read, with some real shocks and I look forward to seeing what's next for Kelly.
#SilentBones #NetGalley Another cracker in this DI Kelly Porter series! Whenever I get one of these books to read it goes straight to the top of my "To be Read" pile! A great action packed thriller set in the beautiful countryside of the Lake District. This case was intriguing as it was very close to Kelly and with revelations about her stepfather and an ending I did not see coming, this was a book I could not put down. A well deserved 5 stars!
I love Rachel Lynch's mysteries as they're always gripping and solid. The great descriptions of the places and the MCs are a bonus
This is another well plotted and fast paced story that kept me guessing.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Increasing temperatures in the Lake District have led to a depleted Thirlmere Reservoir uncovering a skeleton at the bottom. This soon becomes personal for DI Kelly Porter when the body is revealed to be that of someone she went to school with. When this is soon followed by the violent death of another classmate, worries surface that someone has killed to prevent what happened years ago being revealed. The likelihood is that Kelly knows the killer; can she prevent more deaths?
This is now the eleventh book in the Kelly Porter series and it is still as good as ever. As in previous books, the setting is one of the main strengths, with Rachel Lynch creating a vivid image of the Lake District, helping to set the scene for some very location-specific crimes. I found it easy to picture the reservoir, the caravan park and the surrounding areas, making this a fully immersive read. In some police procedurals, it can feel like the lead detective becomes personally involved in a disproportionate amount of crime but the setting here makes it inevitable, with Kelly having to put her past behind her to remain open minded.
It was interesting to see an old adversary of Kelly’s making an appearance and witnessing how, despite them not being around, they continue to exercise their power over certain individuals. There are several spoilers here for those who have not read previous books but this could still be read as a standalone. The rest of the series is brilliant, though, so I would recommend reading them all!
Rachel Lynch has written another gripping book which, thanks to one particular event, also manages to tug on the heart strings. I’m looking forward to seeing what is next for Kelly and her team.
You might think by the time it gets to book 11 you know what to expect from an author but Rachel Lynch certainly proved me wrong here. An enquiry begins after discovery of a skeleton in a dried up reservoir and a few days later another body is found in a caravan park. It turns out that DI Kelly Porter knew both males when she was at school. There is so much about this enquiry that is personal to Kelly, maybe not enough to remove her from the case but definitely enough to challenge her ability to retain an emotional distance from it. On the positive side her home life seems to be in good shape again. As with the other books there is a great sense of the teamwork involved in the enquiry but this one definitely has Kelly at its core. I’m pretty sure this could be read as a standalone but probably works better as part of the series. When I finished reading this one I had to check the author’s social media for confirmation that there is another book planned. Thankfully there is.
Drought hits the Lake District, uncovering a skeleton at the bottom of Thirlmere reservoir. The case quickly becomes personal for DI Kelly Porter when she discovers it’s the remains of an old classmate, missing for over twenty years. Then a day later, another body is found in a caravan park.
Kelly suspects these two crimes are linked. But if she’s right, that means there’s a ruthless killer somewhere in her community – someone who will do anything to keep the truth buried
The eleventh book in the series & it could easily be read on its own. Another very well written page turner from the author, it had me on the edge of my seat & the final chapters had me glued to the book. I love Kelly & how involved she becomes in cases but this case is very personal, it also gives insight into a young Kelly adding more dimensions to her character. Wonderful characters & a fast paced story made for an engrossing read
My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Another excellent book by Rachel Lynch in the DI Kelly Porter series (I cant believe this is book 11!). This book is again set in the beautiful Lake District, but on this occasion the waters have been hiding a terrible secret. The drought reveals a body which has been hidden away for many years. It soon transpires that the person was known to Kelly, and so begins a new investigation which is closer to home than Kelly would like.
This book has the perfect balance of police procedural and continuing to follow Kelly’s personal life and development. It could be read as a stand alone book, but this series is so great, I would recommend starting from book one and relishing the whole series in order.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for a Kindle copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A solid police procedural with a good plot.
The discovery of a skeleton in a lake was brilliantly written, the forensic descriptions were fascinating and clearly very well researched. After a second recent murder takes place, it was so tricky to try and work out who the killer(s?) were as so many of the suspects in the first murder had since died and the history of the police failures from that time were so interesting to read about as I’m sure, happened a lot in those times.
I haven’t read the previous books in this series and so coming in at book 11 meant I didn’t have the benefit of knowing the background of Kelly, her family and her team, however the author did ensure that the essential information is given in this book and so there was no confusion. I did find I struggled to really connect with any of the characters though and perhaps this was due to coming in at a late stage?
3 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for an ARC in return for an honest review.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this brilliant book
it was great catching up with kelly and her work colleagues, seeing how they were getting on with lives and their jobs...
a summer drought meant that all the reservoirs were low and thats what caused the body to be discovered from its place....
bones old bones and kellys unit were called in...along with ted her dad....
these old bones were about to tell a story one that took kelly back to her school days and her memories were about to receive a nasty shock
but another murder happened which was to shock kelly even more....
oh my goodness me what a storyline i couldnt put this book down at all...the shocks kept coming for poor kelly, just shows how our memories can be tainted without us even knowing ... a painful lesson for kelly but one that will make her stronger
cant wait for the next book in this brilliant series
Silent Bones is the 11th book in the DI Kelly Port series set in the Lake District, and its another corker. The storyline is a world away from the helicopter crash drama of the last book, but there is still plenty to keep the reader hooked.
Not only is a skeleton found on a dried up reservoir bed but not long after, a farm worker is found murdered on a holiday camp site. What really makes this book sing is that both victims were known to Kelly Porter, so at times the narrative feels uncomfortably claustrophobic as she tries to get to the truth. Along the way, some of Kelly's own family skeletons come out of the closet, plus she has her hands full with family life.
Just like its predecessors, Silent Bones is an excellent crime read with great police and pathological procedural.
What can I say really. It’s Rachel Lynch. It’s Kelly Porter. It does not disappoint in any way shape and form.
An excellent story, as always. Loved catching up with Kelly and the gang, and as always the descriptions of the Lake District bring them so alive and make you feel as though you are there
Loved it and eagerly awaiting the next one
This is a great crime thriller.
With the discovery of bones in a dried out reservoir, DI Kelly Porter has her hands full trying to work out their identity.
Whilst this is taking place another body is found under a holiday home but this time they know his identity.
Once dental refuses come back Kelly knows that the two men were friends as she used to go to school with them.
The owner of the holiday park also knew both men very well and Kelly as well.
There’s other people linked to the murders but Kelly and the team have trouble finding the truth, as more than one person is hiding something.
This is a gripping crime thriller with some nail biting final chapters.
Thanks to Canelo and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
This was a good story which kept me turning the pages throughout the night. Great mystery, writing and plotting will recommend to all my friends who love this genre.

This is the first time I've encountered DI Kelly Porter, her team, and her very interesting family and their connections. Despite that, the story works well and I had no feeling of missing anything. Besides, I delighted in all of the forensics in relation to the bodies (retired nurse here).
What are the odds that two of her school classmates had been murdered in the same way over 20 years apart and discovered only a couple of days apart?
Great read! I plan to dive into earlier books in series.
I requested and received an EARC from Canelo Crime via NetGalley. Thank you!
Thanks to the publisher and to Netgalley for this captivating eARC.
If you are a fan of police procedurals, you have to give the Kelly Porter series a read! Although the last entry in this series, it was an introduction to the series for me, and quite an introduction it was. I went right out after reading this one and started from book one.
A masterful mystery writer, this novel makes the story truly personal for lead investigator Porter as someone is killing off the most popular of her former school classmates.
As the story continues, the crimes reach even closer to home for Kelly, as she maintains her professionalism while investigating these disturbing crimes.
Particularly rewarding for fans is an introduction into the use of a fascinating forensic tool that allows the crimes, no matter how old, to be examined in 3d animated recreation.
An excellent novel, with plenty of surprises!
