This was my 1st book by Rachel Lynch but will definitely not be my last! I didn't realize I was jumping into the series on #11, so I am for sure going back to read the first 10 books! I am invested in all the characters and their lives! I need to see how they got to where they are! I also can't wait for the next book in the series!

Wow! I read this in the same day! Literally couldn’t put it down. Kelly is such a great character I love this series. This one is about Kelly investigating a body found after many years, and it turns out it’s much closer to home than she thinks. Brilliant as always.
Another brilliant read in this series which features Kelly Porter in her detective role in the Peak Disitrict in Wales. The story follows the discovery of two bodies one murdered recently the other over twenty years ago. Kelly is conflicted in that she new both of them from her school days. She also has past family issues which she has to deal with.
Thanks to Netgalley and Canelo for the ARC of this book. All views are my own.
I have read all but one of Rachel Lynch's DI Kelly Porter series; I love them. Rachel Lynch is one of my favourite crime writers, alongside LJ Ross and Angela Marsons. Her books are gritty - she pulls no punches with her source material - and her characters feel like real human beings, with everyday lives and issues of their own to deal with. Kelly Porter is the kind of detective, whereby, if something bad happened to one of my loved ones (Heaven forbid!) I'd want her on the case!
The book begins with the discovery of human remains in the dried-up edges of one of the Lake District's stunning lakes, revealed due to falling water levels as a result of a hot summer. This gives Kelly the opportunity to solve a cold case - one which soon transpires to be a lot closer to home than she could have foreseen. Of course, in true Lynch style, the body count doesn't stay too low for long and Kelly finds herself investigating the far more recent murder of an old school pal.
I don't want to say more about the story for fear of giving away too many details. However, what I will say is that the regular characters and their relationships continue to be central to the plot. I love the relationship between Kelly and Ted, and felt that Ted, quite rightly, was able to come into his own as her real father in this book. I also adored his friend who drops by to help with the analysis of the bones! I'd love to see him some more in your books, Rachel! As a mother of a child who has just sat his A Levels and is waiting for his results, I'm also rooting for Kelly's stepdaughter, and I think her choosing to go into forensic science would be a fabulous idea (rather than History!) and I can even see her as a summer intern alongside Ted! I'm going to stop trying to force my ideas on the lovely Rachel now!
As ever, the narrative is fast-paced and you will find yourself both flying towards the end and simultaneously trying to drag it out for as long as you can. Both the writing and editing are excellent, but I'm guessing this is what keeps me coming back time and again for more!
Please, if you have not read any of Rachel Lynch's books, do give the DI Kelly Porter series a look. Dark Game is the first instalment and I am sure you will be as hooked as I am!
This book was like visiting an old friend. Have read all of this series by author and could not recommend more.
There are several things going on in this book the discovery of a body being the main plot line. Then there us the emotional impact of family members being involved with the past investigation. Too top that all off you have Kelly and Johnny rebuilding their relationship along with a toddler to deal with and Josie getting ready to start a life away at uni. It is also nice how the relationship is developing between Ted and Kelly. All in all a good read with enough balance between Kelly work and a glimpse into their private life too. Thankyou for advanced copy.
I’d like to thank Canelo and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Silent Bones’, a DI Kelly Porter Crime Thriller written by Rachel Lynch, in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Due to the Lake District experiencing a drought, the water level at Thirlmere reservoir has dropped and the remains of a male body that should have been underwater has been found. DI Kelly Porter and her team are waiting to identify him when the body of Jason Cooper is found dead beneath the cabin rented to him at Parkie’s Cabin Park by the owner Michelle Parkinson. These deaths appear to be connected which Kelly finds difficult to investigate as she was at school with them.
‘Silent Bones’ is the eleventh thriller in this exciting police series set in the beauty of the Lake District and has a plot that’s gripping with suspense and intrigue, and as the number of suspects grows it becomes clear that they’re not all telling the truth. I’ve enjoyed reading more of Kelly’s birth father Ted Wallis who as senior pathologist is involved in the two cases, and her continuing relationship with Johnny the father of their young daughter Lizzie. Rachel Lynch’s style of writing makes it easy to read and get involved as the twists and turns lead to the dramatic and surprising conclusion that I hadn’t been expecting.
Wow, this was another brilliant read from this author. I’ve read hers before and although they can be a little graphic at times I do enjoy them. This one was as good as the others. Knowing the Lake District as I do the names of the places we’re familiar to me and I could picture the scenery and houses in the villages. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
Utterly unputdownable
Due to a drought in the Lake District, a skeleton is laid bare at the bottom of Thirlmere reservoir. Enter DI Kelly Porter and her team to investigate, soon identifying the bones as belonging to Kelly’s school mate who had been missing for twentythree years and who now turns out to have been murdered. Kelly has to reconnect and interact with all her former classmates, bringing up long forgotten events and memories. As usual in this series, Rachel Lynch weaves a fast-paced, twisty plot, featuring likeable characters and brilliant descriptions of the breathtaking environs.
Thanks to netgalley for this arc. Whilst i enjoy the Di kelly porter books i found this one rather long winded. Kelly is thrown into an investigation regarding a school friend of hers who went missing 24 years ago., brian was found at the bottom of the reservoir. Kelly has to confront her past, which may become uncomfortable, none of her former classmates are off the hook as suspects. Can kelly put her past behind her to solve the case?
As usual in my reviews, I will not rehash the plot (there are already reviews like that out there if that's what you're looking for).
I've read all the previous "Kelly Porter" novels and always enjoyed them, so I was delighted to receive an ARC of this latest novel (the 11th in the series!).
Like the other books in the series, I feel that this one would work fine as a standalone too - there's plenty of background information about the main characters.
The plot in this case brings Kelly into contact with people from her past, and we get further insights into her life before the Met and her return to the Lakes. It's nice to see further developments in the various relationships of the main characters - and to meet an old friend and colleague of Ted's too.
The book is not without a few grisly and sad sections (concerning a missing youth from Kelly's teenage years), so be prepared.
As usual, I enjoyed the descriptions of the beautiful Lake District setting, and Rachel Lynch's plotting and writing style. I'm already looking forward to reading the next book in this series!
My thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC. All opinions my own.
DI Kelly Porter and her team have two baffling cases - bones are uncovered when lake water levels are exceptionally low, closely followed by the murder of a middle-aged alcoholic not-quite-homeless-local. When the bones are identified as a young teenager who went missing twenty odd years ago and the murdered man was one of the group hanging around together at that time Kelly becomes suspicious. She's also alarmed as she was on the sidelines of the group at school all those years ago. Her family life is more or less under control now as is that of Kate, her Sergeants. The two men on her team, Dan and Rob, are both having marital problems. The personal 'stuff' adds to the story without detracting from the main detecting. Context is as always excellent but it is the Lake District so you can't go far wrong. Ironically I was up the Haweswater valley two days ago so this case was fresh in my mind! The usual quantity of twists and turns adding to the depth of the story, old passions flare, old wrongs return and some surprising turns. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy.
Thank you to #Netgalley and #CaneloCrime for the copy of #SilentBones by #RachelLynch
This is the eleventh book in the Detective Kelly Porter Series and I have read and enjoyed them all
When drought causes a skeleton to be uncovered in Thirlmere reservoir, Kelly and her team are on the scene, but the body turns out to be someone Kelly went to school with who disappeared over 20 years ago. Then another body turns up but this one’s fresh and from the same school group. Can Kelly stay on the case. Can she find the answers.
The story moves quickly and is very engaging.
Silent Bones by Rachel Lynch is the 11th book in the D.I. Kelly Porter series and has time flown.
After a spell of hot weather, D.I. Kelly Porter is investigating a skeleton rising from the depths of local Thirlmere reservoir. She is shocked to discover after the remains is identified, that they are of an old classmate that disappeared over twenty-four years ago. Who would want to kill him and why?
When another body is discovered at a local Caravan Park murdered in a similar way of that the skeleton and another old school friend of Kelly’s. She takes it personal but keeps being professional in her investigation. She needs to find out the connection between the two murders and why wait for the killer to strike again. She knows that she has a serial killer of her hands.
Thank you, Canelo, for a copy of Silent Bones. Once again, the author has a provided solid murder mystery with D.I. Kelly Porter at the helm. The quality this series never falters. This has a great storyline and I love the descriptions of the different parts of the Lake district and the author gives us great insight of the different procedures in the world of pathology. I really enjoyed this. Another 5 stars from me.
"Thriller" is a genre that promises to keep readers on the edge of their seats, and this definitely delivers. From the very first page, the tension is palpable, and the plot twists and turns in unexpected ways, making it difficult to put the book down. The characters are well-developed and the author does an excellent job of keeping the reader guessing as to who can be trusted and who is hiding something. The pacing is spot-on, with just the right amount of action and suspense to keep the reader engaged. The writing style is gripping and evocative, making it easy to visualise the scenes and feel the emotions of the characters. The author's attention to detail and ability to create a believable world adds to the overall experience of the book. Overall, this is an excellent example of the thriller genre. It's a page-turner that will keep readers guessing until the very end and is sure to satisfy fans of the genre. Highly recommended for anyone who loves a good suspenseful read. This is a first for me by the author and one I enjoyed and I would read more of their work. The book cover is eye-catching and appealing and would spark my interest if in a bookshop. Thank you very much to the author, publisher and Netgalley for this ARC
3.5/5.
Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me the introducing me to this new author and series, with the opportunity to read this book in return for a review. I will say the book did not grab me at first and I almost DNF. However, something told me to keep going and I am so glad I did. What an amazing character Kelly Porter is, and this story and all toe characters slowly grabbed me and pulled me in. No spoilers here, I highly recommend you take a leap like I did and settle in for a great read. Now to go back to the beginning of the series and catch up!
I enjoyed this character led police procedural and especially enjoyed the relationship between Kelly’s father and his old friend. This book delves into Kelly’s teenage years and her recollections of those times are very true to life; the crushes and wanting to fit in. I found the forensic details very interesting, especially how reconstructions of murder weapons is now possible. The writer of this series of books never shies away from tough decisions about her characters. A good read.
Intriguing, Engaging..
The eleventh outing in the Detective Kelly Porter series and a case that quickly gets personal causes distress. A severe drought has caused a reservoir to empty and human remains are discovered but when another body is found nearby it’s clear that there may be a link. Another intriguing and engaging entry to this series with a strong female lead, a credible cast, convincing dialogue and a well described backdrop.
Silent Bones is the eleventh book in the DI Kelly Porter series, but you don’t need to have read the earlier books to enjoy this one. This is a solid police procedural set in the Lake District around Penrith. Kelly Porter is from the area and after a spell in London working for the Met has returned to her roots.
“Bastards doing horrible things hadn’t changed: the scenery had just got prettier.”
As water levels go down in a hot summer spell, a skeleton emerges in Thirlmere Reservoir. The skeleton is found to be Kelly Porter’s erstwhile classmate, Brian Miller, who had disappeared as a teenager, 24 years previously. A day later the body of a second classmate is found freshly killed in a local caravan park. Kelly has to decide whether to continue with the case, is it possible for her to stay professional when the victims and persons of interest were known to her? Investigating the murders will bring back memories of her own teenage years as a lonely girl, who studied hard but who was never part of the cool kids group.
The pacing is good and the characters are fascinating and flawed. The forensic details feel accurate down to the mortuary wax and the latest photogrammetry techniques. Kelly is continually frustrated by the lies she is told as she tries to get to the bottom of this murder mystery. I can imagine this would make for a good TV adaptation.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Canelo books for supplying a copy of this novel, I leave this review voluntarily.
SILENT BONES BY RACHEL LYNCH
REVIEW
This book is actually kinda slow, but I still liked it. I felt like it needed that slow pace. I loved the solving of the crime, insights from Kelly's childhood, past cases and her family. Although I've never read any of this series, I was still able to understand everything and not get confused.
This murder case was so sad, but you would understand better by the time you read the final chapter. I was walking through the crime solving alongside Kelly .
This book was worth it, and I can't wait to read more books in Kelly's series.
This is book 11 in the series, and while I have only read a few in the series, it's well worth the effort to read all of them if you like strong female lead characters! It does pick up after the events of Sudden Death, but the author gives just enough of an idea what might have happened, without giving too much of the previous story away (so you'll want to go back and read it, LOL). What happens when the past you THOUGHT you know suddenly turns up as a dead body in your current investigation, and suddenly everyone you used to know is somehow involved in the case? For Kelley, it's both welcome and off putting at the same time. As she struggles with memories that are affecting the case at hand, and wondering if she need to walk away from it, she also is questioning her future, and life with her boyfriend. Porter is a character that is relatable and even if you think you know who the killer is early, your questioning the why and rapidly turning the pages to find it out! Don't miss this strong series!
