Helena just spent the last ten years in prison serving time for a murder she swore that she never committed. She was beat, almost to death, more times than she can count. The Sisters stabbed her more than eighty times ones, but she miraculously survived. Now she’s free, but with no family and her name known around town, she doesn’t have anywhere to go.
Thomas works for the BCI because of his special ability. After his stepdad stomped on his head when he was a young boy he can no longer see colors, but he can now put his hand on a dead body’s head and tell investigators how the person died.
Thomas notices Helena at the local cemetery, he doesn’t know who she is, but he can see color when he’s near her! The world is so beautiful when she’s near and when they connect they’re each other’s savior…each other’s healer.
I started reading this one when it published because I devoured the first two in the series, but I must’ve been distracted with other books because I never finished. You could read this book as a standalone, but to get the background of their connection and how they’re able to heal one another, I would read the rest of the series.
Every book in this series is better than the last! I don't know how Abbie Roads does it. Thomas and Helen are so good together. Their backstories are full of hate and evil and darkness. But then they become saturated with love and kindness and light. I mean there's still the crappy stuff but they complete each other so fully that they are able to deal with it. I am hoping to see Kent, and Charity, in a future book.
Captivating, heart warming moment between characters. Very interesting how these characters have similar situations. I believe that Helen couldn’t love Thomas the way he thinks she can. What Malone did was not in humane. Thomas and Helen helped both each other overcome fear and pain of which they endure.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC. Unfortunately I didn't finish this one. It was too dark for me and I just didn't enjoy what I was reading.
These characters are nuanced, complicated and lovely. The story is compelling and the ending is so so perfect it brought tears to my eyes. It's glorious. I highly recommend this book.
Well written dark romance that kept me glued to throughout. Suspense, intrigue, emotions, and twists.
I did not finish this one, it was not for me, I couldn't relate to the characters, and just did not care for the story.
I loved this book the twist and turns. When I thought I figured who it was wrong.
It is a great book.
Read it and see for your self.
This book captivated me from the beginning. Helena Grayse gets released from prison for a crime that she didn't commit. She was subjected to serious abuse in jail and doesn't speak while she is in prison. After years of not using her voice, she is found camping on a man's property. They have an instant connection and their relationship takes off from there. She feels safe when she is with him and he wants to protect her. Helena is targeted and attacked. This story is amazing and I will be recommending it to my patrons at work. I can't wait to read the first two in the series.
This was a riveting book! I couldn't put it down from start to finish! I know this is a series but it's the first book I've read. I enjoyed it so much I am looking forward to reading the others! Totally awesome!
SHATTERED DREAMS is the third instalment in Abbie Roads’ contemporary, adult FATAL DREAMS paranormal, romantic suspense series. This is police department consultant Thomas Brown, and former inmate Helena Grayse’s story line. SHATTERED DREAMS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading the series in order for back story. SHATTERED DREAMS is the re-release of the author’s NEVER LET ME FALL (Fatal Dreams Series).
NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may not be triggers for more sensitive readers.
Told from several third person perspectives including Thomas and Helena SHATTERED DREAMS follows the building relationship between police department consultant Thomas Brown, and former inmate Helena Grayse. Ten years earlier Helena was sentenced to prison for a crime she did not commit but Helena found herself the target of a prison gang, a gang determined to end her life. Upon release from prison, a battered and battle -scarred Helena headed back to the family home, a home now owned by consultant Thomas Brown. When the attacks against Helena’s life continue on the outside, Thomas is determined to protect the woman that literally calls to his heart, a woman with whom he is psychically tethered. What ensues is the building but struggling relationship between Thomas and Helena, and the potential fall-out as Thomas’s past is determined to own him body and soul, a malevolent past that is closely connected to the woman he loves.
Thomas Brown has a special ability of which only a few are aware. With his ability to ‘read’ and ‘see’ the shadow of death, Thomas is surprised when Helena’s aura is a beacon of colour and light, colour he hasn’t seen in too many years. Helena has survived the prison abuse but was unaware of the how and why. Keeping to herself, remaining quiet in the face of danger and death, Helena continues to be targeted for sins of the past.
The relationship between Thomas and Helena is one of immediate attraction. Thomas knows immediately, with one touch, that Helena is his soulmate -her nearness allows Thomas to see colours and light; his touch heals that which would have killed a lesser human. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
SHATTERED DREAMS is a story of heartbreak and pain; family and loss; betrayal and vengeance. The premise is dark, gritty and raw; the romance is fated; the characters are broken, damaged and lost.

This is a really dark thriller with paranormal aspects. I've really enjoyed Abbie's imagination using dreams to solve or help people in life and death situations. Please be aware there are some really violent situations in this story.
This time Helena Grayse is just being released from prison for murdering her boyfriend that she didn't do. She's spent 10 years being bullied and almost killed over and over again by fellow inmates. She hasn't spoken a word in 8 years when she was brutally attacked by "The Sisters" in her prison ward. When released she meets Thomas Brown in the graveyard while visiting her grandparent's graves. There is an immediate connection for both of them.
Thomas Brown was abused as a child by his step-father Sheriff Robert Malone. Because of the abuse at five years old he has a facial scar and brain damage that makes him color blind. He also sees people's Shadow of Death. When he places his hand on a newly dead victim he sees their life and their last moments. He uses his gift with investigations with the Bureau of Criminal Investigations. The heroes of the last two books were also employed by the BCI and they know each other. Thomas is the brother of Evanee Brown in the previous book. While on his way to his mother's funeral he meets Helena and he suddenly sees color! This is the beginning of their story together that heals each of them and makes them a force to aide those in trouble.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I didn’t notice this was a re-issue but this time it is my fault as it was clearly stated in the description. I loved this book . This is the one that made me Abbie Roads fan .
Shattered Dreams by Abbie Roads is book Three in the Beautiful Nightmare Series. This is the story of Tommy and Helena. I have read the previous books so this was a must read for me. I enjoyed how Helena and Tommy came together putting their broken pieces together to make them whole. I hope to read more from this author.
Amazing book must read. I love Ms. Roads books. It grabs you from the first page to the last.
Great story line, great characters, and so much more.
Survival and Love!
Neither Helena nor Thomas have led easy lives. But together, can they find healing?
These two have scars, inside and out, but will they see something else in the other?
What do I get from a Roads' novel?
An intricately developed, romantic thriller that is so hard to put down.
I enjoyed each turn of the page and was so sorry this amazing series has come to an end!
I loved each and every story! But, I know this author will be penning something wonderful to follow!
Right from the start I was hooked on the story I couldn't stop reading it. I loved the connection between the main characters and the overcoming of their traumas. Abbie Roads did an amazing job with this dark, mixed with-suspense, paranormal, and psychological romantic story. Can't wait to read the next book by her!
Straight from the beginning this story starts out intense that had my heart in my throat hoping against hope things went a better way and this feeling was with me until the very end. Thomas and Helen’s stories are tragic and heart wrenching that you want to hold them tight and never let go, so when their paths cross you hope they can put the past away and move forward but it wouldn’t be a thriller if it was that easy. The tragedy and pain they both endured shattered my soul, but the way they helped each other heal, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally was pure beauty. It was suspenseful and kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to find out what would happen next and even though my heart broke for them it also cheered them on as they were finally getting the happiness they deserved. It has its dark moments, but the beautiful moments make the pain worth it. The author is amazing and knows how to pull all the emotions out of the reader while keeping the story epically suspenseful.
This is another mystery that will have you holding your breath without even knowing it. Abbie Roads has a way with character development that brings the reader on the journey with them. She then weaves a suspenseful mystery that cam handle very dark elements, as well as a solid romantic interest. I am amazed by this ability to combine all of the elements into one cohesive story atc
Helen and Thomas have both suffered a nightmare - her being wrongly convicted of murder and him having been abused as a child. Neither of them expects to ever find love but they have a connection that draws them together. This is an intense love story with plenty of danger, betrayal, acceptance, and healing. It's one of those stories that will grip you at the start and keep you turning the pages until the end.
