A beautifully illustrated story about how our memories are tied to the places we live and how difficult it can be to move to another country.
A girl wonders why her mother hates the winter but after a trip to her mother’s homeland she begins to understand. The girl uses a love of the natural world to make connections between her home and her mother’s past.
This is a book that would be lovely for children to investigate how it feels to be an immigrant, migrant or refugee. It would also be great to investigate how we are connected to plants and how gardens can affect our moods.
Highly recommend!

An educational and heartwarming story of immigration and a child teaching their parent, which is so magically illustrated but at the same time includes so much information, it is bound to be a re read and a hit!

A Garden Called Home is a beautiful story for children and families. At the beginning of the story, we see a young girl questioning how her Mama can not love winter. She knows from the stories that her mother tells, that where she grewup is very different. The story goes on to show, through a trip to visit family, why the mother feels the way she does.

This story is great for helping children understand and empathize with people from different backgrounds. To add to an already beautiful story, we have discussions of nature and family working together to bring happiness to the other. I cannot wait to read this story a loud!

The air has turned cold and trees are losing all their leaves, snow falling are signs that Winter is arriving. Mama doesn't like the winter. Mama is from a far away country where it doesn't get cold or snow. Mama prefers to not go out in the cold and stay indoors where she can wrap up in big blankets. Mama and her little girl take a trip to the far away country for a visit. While on the trip with family, mama teaches her little girl a lot about her country. When they return the little girl goes exploring and learns things on her own. She wants to tell mama about them the way her mama taught her. She shows mama that life can be wondrous wherever you are. A lesson a lot of people need to learn. Thank you to NetGalley, Penguin Random House - Canada, and Jessica J. Lee for the ARC. I really enjoyed this book. I liked that it combined a sweet story about a mother and child with information about Taiwanese and North American plant and animal life. The characters felt very real to me, especially the mother.
