Oh goodness how fun twisting around the typical mermaid perspective and showing more of the original personality of mermaids shine through. This book just makes me smile. Yes, it is dark and many current mermaid lovers might be confused, but it is dark in a fun way that kids will love. Overall, this is just a fun book. One where it shows that personality can shine. You don’t have to be the perfect mermaid just be you.
Thank you to Penguin Random House Canada, Tundra Books, and Netgalley for allowing me to read an advance copy of this book.
First of all, I want to thank the author and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. The good little mermaids guide to bedtime by Eija Summer is coming out on March 05, 2024.
This was a cute bedtime story about a little mermaid who doesn’t want to go to bed. At first glance, the mermaid on the cover looks a bit scary but in actuality the illustrations were very good. I would recommend this to my friends who are parents. #NetGalley
The ferocious toddler mermaid in "The Good Little Mermaid's Guide to Bedtime" will resonate with many young ones who are opposed to bedtime. As the mermaid is being read what good little mermaids do when it is time for bedtime, she objects with her own fierce proclamations as to what a mermaid should do. Mermaids are sirens of the deep, luring swimmers to their doom! No creature of nightmares should need a bedtime!
This was such a fun bedtime book that I would love to share with families!
Alluring illustrations kept out interest as we listened to the bedtime routine of a cutely terrifying mermaid. The spacing and font occasionally were confusing to follow, otherwise it would have been a 5-star rating.
With help from my 5-year old son.
Okay, I am almost 40, have no tiny humans, and I want this book for myself. xD I'll buy it for my niece, as well.
It has whimsical, cozy artwork. It's delightful and cute, cute, cute. The mermaid is quite confident and stubborn in an adorable way, and possess a fabulous imagination that is reflected through her eyes as well as reality (ex: she sees her teeth as fangs, but the mirror shows more practical teeth). She acquiesces when it fulfills her I’m-A-Terror narrative before succumbing to bed for the sake of her plushie/stuffed animal. And there is a Meta-ness (when asking who wrote the book, etc). The mermaid is charmingly funny, from pictures to her proclamations. Writing is good too, and instills practices worth pursuing; physical and mental healthy things, alike.
This is pretty unique! I thought it was cute and funny, but I can see a lot of people not liking it because it might scare their little kids. My 3 year old loves it! The pictures are pretty. Overall very cute book!
I found this to be a fun story - who doesn't have a contrary child in their life? The illustrations are great and definitely engaging. Thanks #NetGalley #PenguinRandomHouse
This book reminds me of several little girls I know who are both sassy and love mermaids. I'm sure they'd really enjoy this story.
This was a very unexpected read about a mermaid! I enjoyed the perspective of a not so stereotypical mermaid reading a book of a bedtime routine for mermaids - very unique! I think I would have enjoyed more of a story about this mermaid to go with her reactions to this bedtime story, as it was neat to imagine a mermaid in a different way. The pages were very colorful, with a distinction between the two stories being told together.
I read this with my 7 year old daughter and she absolutely adored it!
Thanks NetGalley, Penguin Random House Canada, and Tundra Books for access to this FIERCE arc!
5/5 stars!!
This was such a cute and entertaining book! Perfect for little merpeople who just hate going to bed! I loved how this was drawn, all of the underwater creatures had the best little reactions.
