I love Josie Silver's winter romances! I was obsessed with ONE DAY IN DECEMBER when I first read it years ago, and A WINTER IN NEW YORK was just as delightful. It had romance, family, and the magic of the holiday season in New York City. So good!

I really enjoyed this story! It's not only a romance but a beautiful portrayal of found family and growth. I was invested in their story, I could understand why our female lead made the choices she did, and I love the neighbors. This is a great holiday read to cozy up with this winter.

Josie Silver has done it again! She is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors for swoony romances with heart. Her latest novel, A Winter in New York follows a young chef freshly arrived in New York, who finds herself embarking on a year of discovery after recognizing an iconic gelateria from an old family photo and becoming entangled with the magnetic Italian family who runs it.

Iris is fleeing London to escape her controlling ex, and it's no surprise that she finds herself settling on New York, the city that her effervescent mother, who recently passed from cancer, loved more than any place in the world. Her mother spent some of the best years of her life here, singing in a band before Iris was born. Iris has grown up hearing the stories of her mother's adventures in the Big Apple, and she can't wait to visit some of her mom's favorite haunts and make memories of her own.

One thing Iris was not expecting was to come across a gelateria that looks strikingly familiar. As it turns out, it is the exact same shop that featured prominently in her mother's photo album. Iris and her mother loved to make vanilla gelato together using their special secret recipe, so gelato holds a special place in her heart. Iris can't resist venturing inside only to discover that the family that owns the shop - the Belottis - are in the midst of a crisis. Their patriarch, Santos, is the only one who knows the recipe by heart, and he in a coma. As the Belottis are known for and only serve one flavor of gelato - vanilla - the fact that the recipe is lost is monumental. Without the recipe, the gelateria faces imminent closure.

As Iris begins to put the pieces together, she soon discovers that her mother is somehow tied to the Belotti family and the recipe that so many of Iris's memories are tied to is in fact the missing family gelato recipe. Iris doesn't know how to tell the Belottis that she is in possession of their super secret recipe. Desperate to uncover her mother's tie to the Belottis, Iris volunteers her services as a chef by helping Gio Belotti, the swoonworthy nephew of Santos, find the missing ingredients in his family's gelato recipe. Iris quickly finds herself not only falling for the warm and inviting Belotti family, but also Gio, who is everything that her ex wasn't.

Iris risks losing everything the longer she keeps her secret from the Belottis. As her life becomes more and more entwined with Gio's, she knows that she can't tell him the truth without losing him forever. Can she find a way to keep her secret and the man she loves?

As a prolific reader, I appreciate and respect Josie Silver as an author with great talent for writing well-developed, vibrant characters who are multi-dimensional and relatable. I am always immediately drawn into her books, which are evenly paced and sprinkled with thoughtful, compelling plot points throughout the course of the story. As I journey through one of her books, I am always enraptured by Silver's sense of style and her intimate way of writing human connection.

A Winter in New York is no exception. This Christmas-adjacent story takes us through the fall and winter seasons in New York City, and while the holidays play only a small role in this touching tale, it is still a fitting read for the Christmas season. With an atmospheric setting and a lively cast of characters, A Winter in New York will find its place in the heart of many.

While I think this book has cute potential it’s just not grabbing my attention. I’m over 30% in and would rather be reading other things. I think if I finished I’d give it a 3/5 but there’s too many other books for me to read to want to finish.

I think the main characters are likeable but this whole thing could be resolved if Iris just told Gio about her mom. Book over. The end.

I had been waiting to read A Winter in New York until closer to Christmas, and unfortunately the characters felt a bit one-dimensional to me.

After reading One Day in December, I had high hopes for this book. Unfortunately, this was only a decent read for me. I felt like the entire book was all about the continual lies, and I did not feel a real connection with the main characters. Overall, just okay.

Iris decides to flee London to escape an abusive relationship and the loss of her mother for a fresh start in New York City. She is instantly taken in by a new friend, Bobby who is insistent on getting her out and about in the city. They’re strolling an Italian street festival together when Iris’s eye catches a gelateria that is familiar to her from her mother’s photo collection. She immediately returns the next day and meets Gio Belotti, the nephew of the family run gelateria. Iris quickly learns that the gelateria is at risk of closing because Gio’s uncle Santo has become ill and forgotten the recipe for their famous gelato. It doesn’t take long for iris to piece together that her mother once had a relationship with Gio’s uncle Santo and the lost recipe also happens to be the very same recipe that her mother prepared for her her entire life. The only problem is that her mother made her swear to never share the recipe because Santo broke a family promise by sharing it with her. Iris has a background as a culinary chef and decides to help Gio discover a similar taste to his uncle Santo’s recipe on his own. They’ll also discover their feelings for each other, which are now complicated by secrets and lies. Will Gio discover the recipe and save the gelateria? Will Iris reveal their family’s connection even though it will hurt his family?

I loved this story! It’s the perfect cozy winter read with that traditional large Italian family warmth.

4/5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Many thanks to Josie Silver, the publisher and NetGalley for an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A Winter in New York reminds me of hot chocolate- it’s warm and made me happy. Flawed characters, a beautiful scenery, and sweet romantic spice. I just wish Iris would have told her secret sooner so I could have gotten more love story but regardless I loved it!

This is so cute and fluffy. I think this author gets better as she goes along (except Lydia, which I disliked intensely). But I also think you have to be in the mood for this. It's very fluffy, like a warm hug. I mean, obviously there's conflict, because you need a story, but you almost want this to be mildly predictable. We're looking for a happy ending when we pick this up. If that's a spoiler, I think you probably should think about a different genre.

I definitely recommend this. It is exactly what you think it is going to be.

I loved A Winter in New York, by Josie Silver. I thought that this book was charming and heartwarming, and the perfect book to cozy up with. I'm an Italian New Yorker, so seeing the story of an Italian American family and all the love (and craziness) that comes with that, made me feel right at home.

The story unfolds as we meet Iris, a New York City transplant from London. She has a beloved gelato recipe that was handed down to her from her late mother. One day she stumbles upon Belotti's and discovers her beloved gelato recipe is actually the secret secret of this wonderful shop (and family). Struggles, love, friendship, and heartbreak make this story a well-rounded one.

The only negative I could find in this book was the dual timeframe storyline about Iris' mother. I found myself wanting to hurry up and get through them to get back to Iris and the Belotti famiglia. For me, her mother's story didn't bring much to the book and instead took away from the story.

I can't wait to tell my friends and family (especially my Mom) about this charming book.

I'm not a huge romance reader so my rating/review is based purely off the fact I enjoyed this book. It was sweet, lighthearted, but had a few parts of the story that were more substantial and added depth. I loved the characters. Some parts of the story were a little corny to me, but take that with a grain of salt considering I usually read thrillers. I recommend this one if you want a nice little holiday/winter time book to cozy up with,

I loved this book! I devoured it in only a few sittings and wish there was more to read. The story line was paced very well and the characters were easy to love!

Found Family + New York + the Holiday Season + Gelato? Um, yes please!

Iris is looking for a fresh start after an abusive relationship and the loss of her mom. She arrives in New York, the place where her mom said she felt most alive, on a mission to rediscover herself. Kind hearted Gio is also working through grief while trying to recreate his family's famous vanilla gelato recipe.

There's something extra magical about New York during the holiday season, and that magical coziness is portrayed beautifully here. This story is full of community and generosity, which made for a very heartwarming tale that's about so much more than the romance slowly blossoming between Iris and Gio. This book is for you if you like strong side characters, crying for all the reasons, bright lights and big cities, found family (but also big Italian families), gelato, and sweet adult romance. Perfect for fans of "romance plus" authors like Katherine Center and Emily Henry. This book also stays strong and true to everything I loved about Ms. Silver's One Day in December and One Night on the Island.

Thank you to Random House Publishing (Ballantine), NetGalley, and Josie Silver for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

DNF…I really wanted to like this book, but it just wasn’t for me. I found the female main character to be incredibly dull and the overall storyline is pretty flat. I found the intentional miscommunication to be something that could have been avoided completely and I didn’t really care to see what happened at the end.

This was a cute one! I really loved Iris's relationship with her friends Bobby and Robin. It felt like a real "when friends become family" relationship. I adored Gio and Iris's blossoming relationship and the way his big Italian family folder her in as their own. Warning: you will want to eat gelato while reading this book. Overall, a really fun read during the holiday season! Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you to the publisher and netgalley! I was so excited for this one especially during this time of year. However, I was a bit underwhelmed, I didn’t feel very connected to the story/characters . This book would be great for women’s fiction fans and slow burn winter stories!
