3.5⭐. This is my first Josie Silver book and I must say I did really enjoy it. I love the NYC setting so much, especially around the holidays. Iris moves from London to NYC after ending an emotionally abusive relationship and losing her mom. Her mother always loved NY and even fell in love there, so Iris felt like she could start fresh at the place her mother loved. Iris stumbles upon the one gelateria shop that was in one of her mother's photos. She then realizes that this could be the place her mother got the secret gelato recipe from so long ago. She meets the super handsome Gio who tells her they may be in jeopardy of closing because his uncle, who's the only one that knows the recipe, is now in a coma. She knows after tasting it that she has the recipe, but how did her mother end up knowing this secret recipe anyway?! She commits to helping Gio, his family, and the shop with creating the popular flavor. Along the way, she starts falling for Gio. This book was heartwarming and romantic and it was a really nice change of pace. A very cute read!
Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for the gifted copy. All opinions are my own.
4 stars!
"A Winter in New York" is the first Josie Silver novel I've read. I definitely need to go back and check out her other books because this one is terrific. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me reminisce, it made me happy, it made me want vanilla gelato really, really badly! "A Winter in New York" will have you wanting to drop everything in your life to see the snow falling on the streets of Big Apple. Silver paints such an evocative picture of NYC in winter! This book will leave found-family fans eating good for nearly 400 pages. I loved this aspect of the story; it's really heartwarming and perfect for the Christmas season. I really enjoyed the main characters, Iris and Gio. Iris and Gio are both fully-fleshed-out, realistic-feeling characters. Iris is on her own, living in New York with a roommate because her mom came to New York on a wing and a prayer years before, and she wanted to follow in her footsteps. I love that Gio is a pure-hearted, soft-spoken guy. He has a big family, each one more boisterous and wonderful than the last. Still, both Gio and Iris have difficult, complicated relationships with their biological families, which adds to the tension and intrigue. There is also a terrific cast of supporting characters here as well. As the story moved along, I found myself holding my breath waiting for the other shoe to drop, for Iris's secret to be revealed. Some readers won't like this slow-burning aspect of the story, but it sustained me and made me read quicker, propelling me quicker towards the inevitable ending. I literally could not put this book down. It reads very fast and is addicting to boot. I highly recommend it!
Thank you to NetGalley, Josie Silver, Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine, and Dell for the complimentary ARC of this book. All opinions are my own. I was not compensated for this review.
Heartfelt cozy read that also has some great plot intrigue! A perfect book to grab for the upcoming colder months!
This is a script perfect for the Hallmark channel! It’s an easy read with great family dynamics and connectedness, a little bit of insta-love, some drama that’s stems from the past, and likable main characters.
Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4!
I really want some vanilla gelato right now. 🙈
This story with Iris was so wonderful and emotional. She had so much growth as a character after essentially running away from and ex and finding herself hiding secrets from a person she’s falling in love with.
This book is the perfect, Christmas romance novel — full of love, emotions, and two people learning how to be the best versions of themselves. 🥹💗
I love any book that is set in the winter, or has something to do with Christmas. Well this book is in that category. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
This one got me in all my feels!
✔️One of the MCs is a chef. I’m always a sucker for stories that involve cooking/food and the ties it has to our memories & lives.
✔️Stellar supporting cast!
✔️ Romance, duh! ♥️
✔️ Family - sometimes the ones you create are even stronger than the ones you’re born into!
I enjoyed the premise of this book and the writing, as well. I was a bit thrown off by the title because I feel like it had little to do with the plot of the book.
What a perfect holiday/winter book! I always enjoy Josie Silver books, and this one did not disappoint at all. Cute characters, beautiful setting and descriptions. What a fun premise - gelato can never be a bad theme. I didn't want to put the book down, and was sad when it ended. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a digital ARC of this book.
I will read Josie Silver's grocery list at this point. She is 4/4 on incredible reads. This book left me longing for gelato and a holiday romance. I will re-read this book every year around the holiday time to get in the spirit. I loved the relationship between Gio and Iris. I loved the found family element with not only Bobby but also the whole Belotti family. This book just hit me in the feels in the best way possible. Great read.
I absolutely love Josie Silver. When I first read one of her books, I binged read her entire back list within a week. These books are easy to read and they hook you! A Winter in New York is no different. I absolutely loved this one as well and can't wait to read more of her books!
I LOVED this book! So hard to put down! I was hooked from the prologue! What a wonderful story! Perfect winter/Christmas book! So glad I read this! Now on the hunt for some gelato! I got an advanced readers copy from netgalley but my review is unbiased
Josie Silver has become one of my go-to romance authors over the last couple of years, and she’s done it again! The characters are always relatable and pull you right into the story. Time to go get a big bowl of gelato 🍨
A Winter in New York by Josie Silver is filled with magic and will leave you smiling.
Iris is a British chef looking start her life over in New York after a bad breakup. After stumbling upon a gelato shop that looks vaguely familiar Iris befriends the owner, Gio, who lets her know the shop might close because his uncle, who holds the secret gelato recipe, is in a coma. Iris sets off on a journey to help Gio recreate his family’s recipe while discovering a few family secrets of her own.
Josie Silver is one of my favorite authors, I’m first in line for everything she releases. Her stories captivate me. I immediately felt connected to Iris and loved reading her story. I enjoyed the timeline flips between now and when Iris’ mom was young. While I thought A Winter In New York was going to be a Christmas story (it isn’t!) I was swept away in this winter story that left me unable to put it down!
If you’re looking for a cozy winter read, then be sure to pick up Josie Silver’s latest, A Winter in New York.
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest
This was another great book by Josie Silver. I enjoyed the characters of Gio and Iris. I liked the juxtaposition of Iris’ story and her mother’s story. While I didn’t agree with the choices Iris made per se, I liked her and wanted to just hug her. The Belotti family were just happiness scattered across the pages. I loved that they felt like Iris’ missing puzzle piece. The setting in New York over the holidays felt magical.
I loved the richly interwoven stories and Iris' quest to find somewhere to belong. There's nothing quite like a big, loud Italian family, and they make a beautiful centerpiece for this cozy NYC holiday story.
This book really took me a while to warm up to. It just felt that it moved a bit slowly with a bit of repetitiveness. However, I did love the characters and felt a connection to them which is what ultimately kept me reading. As the book progressed, I found myself sinking more into the plot and by the time the book wrapped up, I saw what the author was trying to do all along. It was a lovely story of family, friendship and the timing of things in life. And last but not least, it's a sweet romance.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. I voluntarily chose to read and review it and the opinions contained within are my own.
I have really come to love Josie Silver and for me, her books seem to get better and better!! This latest release has a slow pace that was so perfect for me in this moment. While sometimes a slow burn can be frustrating, I love that the romance was hesitant and not rushed. It felt so natural to their situation. There are a few well placed moments of Iris’s mother’s past timeline - and I loved them so much. I finished this book with such a contented feeling. 💙
While there are holiday scenes, the book felt more wintery than Christmasy.
What to expect::
•NYC setting
•Foodie love
•Sweet, slow burn romance
•Grief
•Great family + found family
•GELATO!!!
🔥Closed door
The only thing that kept this from being 5 stars was that there is a lie from the heroine (not cheating) and I just feel so anxious and nervous anytime there is an untruth circulating!!
This is a special book that I genuinely loved. The plot stretches back from the 1960s to the present and it’s a story of love and family.
Iris is a chef who moved to NYC to escape a controlling relationship. She’s starting over, working at a noodle place whose the owner is a close friend. He loves her vanilla gelato recipe that she got from her dear deceased mother.
He takes her to the Italian Feast of San Gennaro in Little Italy, where she recognizes the entrance of a gelato shop from one of her mother’s pictures. When she goes back the next day, she finds a handsome guy named Gio whose family has owned the shop for generations and is famous for their vanilla gelato.
Unfortunately, his uncle who knows the secret recipe has suffered a stroke and has amnesia, so the shop is closed because no one else knows the recipe.
After one taste of the remaining gelato, Iris immediately suspects that the shop’s recipe must be the same as her mother’s, but how is that possible? She starts hanging out at the shop to help out Gio and find out how her mom got the recipe, and meets Gio’s family, who embraces her. Iris suddenly experiences the large family gatherings she’s always dreamed of, especially at Christmas time.
This is a must read book! 5 stars.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed as in this review are completely my own.
3.5 stars!
The weather here in NC is finally getting cooler, putting me in the mood for all of the holiday books!
I was so excited to see that Josie Silver was coming out with a new book, especially a holiday romance, since I loved her two other books. Although I enjoyed this book, there were pieces that also weren’t my favorite - the main one being the FMC. I found myself getting more frustrated with her than loving her character. This doesn’t mean that I didn’t love Iris and Gio as a couple, as I was still rooting for them through the very end! I liked that we were able to get a glimpse into her mom’s past and how we were able to see Iris’ and her moms worlds collide in present day. The situation with Aaron kept me on my toes throughout the book and I appreciated how something negative was able to bring a group of people together. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a cute holiday romance (especially if you love cozy books involving baking and Italian single dads 😉)
