I really enjoyed this book! I requested it on NetGalley because I wanted to read a Christmas romcom. Although this wasn't *quite* as much Christmas as I wanted (a good portion of the book takes place in the fall), it fit the romcom bill nicely.
I would describe this book as One Italian Summer meets While You were Sleeping. Following her mother's death and finally breaking up with her abusive boyfriend, Iris escapes to New York City, a place that had been dear to her mother's heart. She stumbles upon a gelato shop that turns out to be the source of her mother's top secret gelato recipe. When she learns that the family patriarch, the person who his family believes to be the only one who knows the recipe, has suffered memory loss and no longer remembers it, Iris endeavors to help the family recreate the recipe - without revealing her own knowledge or secret connection to them. As Iris grows closer to the Bellotti family, especially Gio, it gets harder and harder for her to rein in her emotions and juggle all the lies she feels that she has to tell.
I did not care for the secrets/lying plotline of this book. It came across as unnecessary and juvenile. Iris spends a good bit of time reflecting on how stressful it is keep lying, and all I could think to myself was how much easier things would be if she would just be honest. Instead, she kept digging herself into a hole, and it nearly cost her all of the relationships she had formed.
That aside, I really enjoyed A Winter in New York. I loved each of the characters - I'm not sure that I could pick a favorite. Gio was a dreamy leading man. His family was wonderful and so fun to get to know. I enjoyed the occasional flashbacks to Vivien's story. The depiction of New York City felt authentic and immersive. I just wish I could taste that famous gelato!
Overall, this was a fun romcom to read leading up to the Christmas season. This would be a great book to read if you're itching for Christmas, because a good portion of it takes place in the fall, too. I would definitely recommend this book to romcom fans!
FINALLY I’ve read a book worth raving about 👏🏻 it’s been a rough reading streak recently and thankfully A Winter in New York by Josie Silver has broken it. This new book comes out on October 3, 2023!
A Winter in New York follows Iris and Geo and a closely guarded family secret that ties them together…even though only one of them knows about it. Iris has come to New York to start over and walk in her mom’s footsteps, one batch of her super secret gelato at a time. When Iris recognizes a door from an old picture of her mom’s, she goes to explore and realizes her gelato recipe actually belongs to the Belotti’s…the one that only 2 Belotti family members at a time are allowed to know. Iris begins working with Geo and consequently falling in love with him. This book was the perfect mix of holiday and romance. I loved that Geo and Iris were older, in their 30s, instead of most romances which center around like 20 year olds. Their relationship was authentic and mature. I loved the gelato and Italian family elements and how Iris and Geo both grew throughout the story. The end had me tearing up so that’s how you know it’s good. Don’t miss this one for your upcoming holiday reads!

A Winter In New York by Josie Silver did not disappoint! I had high expectations, because Josie Silver is one of my favorites, and I really enjoyed this book with its wonderful characters and plot. This is the perfect cozy winter read!
When Iris decides to leave an abusive relationship in London, she is hoping for a fresh start in New York City. Growing up, she loved watching movies with her mother set in NYC while eating their family gelato recipe. Now, living in NYC, she discovers a family-run Gelateria that she saw in a photo of her mother’s belongings. Wanting to find out more about why her mother had a photo of this shop, she visits the next day where she meets Gio, the owners nephew, who shares the shop is in danger of closing because his uncle is in a coma and has the secret gelato recipe, which no one else knows. Upon trying the gelato at the shop, Iris discovers it’s the same recipe her mother used to make gelato. However, since she does not know her mothers connection to the shop, she is unsure why Gio’s uncle gave it to her mother to begin with. Iris feels compelled to help, and offers to help at the shop by re-creating the gelato flavor. Along the way, she starts to fall for Gio. Eventually, Gio’s uncle wakes from his coma. Will the secret recipe, among with other secrets, ruin the relationships and life she has tried to create for herself in NYC?

I alternated between reading this book, and listening to the audiobook, narrated by Emma Appleton. This was my first audiobook with Appleton as the narrator, and I really loved how she brought the characters to life. I highly recommend listening to the audiobook!
Thank you Random House Publishing Group, Josie Silver, and NetGalley for providing me with a #gifted copy of A Winter In New York!
This book confused me from the first page. It seemed as if there was some sort of preamble or back story that was missing
"A Winter in New York" by Josie Silver felt like the perfect jumpstart to the fall season & upcoming winter holiday time. Iris aims for a fresh start in NYC after the gutting loss of her mother and an abusive relationship (reminiscent of Tiffy's ex in The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary). While those are heavy issues Iris is facing, this book is primarily about healing from loss and life, love, friendship, loyalty, family - both found and by birth - and of course, gelato. As is always the case with Silver's writing, I was quickly wrapped up in the curious story wondering how all the threads tied together. The miscommunication trope makes an appearance in this story and while it is never my favorite part of a book, it is what it is & I was glad there was some sense in the characters in the end. I loved this book and will read it year after year. I also now need a gelato machine. Vanilla FOREVER.
After reading A Winter in New York by Josie Silver, all I want to do is eat gelato. And after you read it, you will too.
The book follows Iris in her first year living in New York after previously living in London. She has left an abusive relationship behind, and is still grieving the loss of her mother. The one constant in her life is the secret gelato recipe her mom had made her her entire life. As she attends an Italian festival, she finds a door that looks familiar. Turns out, it's the gelato restaurant from her mom's past, the source of the secret gelato recipe.
Enter Gio, the handsome widower, and son of the gelato owner. There's been a family tragedy, and they don't have the recipe...but Iris does. What follows is the gradual falling in love between these two lost souls as they work to find the lost recipe.
While I really liked this book, the characters were amazing, I felt the secrets Iris kept from Gio were kept for much too long, and I felt the ending was very rushed. I feel like Silver could have drawn it out a little bit more. However, that minor gripe aside, the book was an emotional rollercoaster. It had me smiling, crying, and sighing at the romance of it all.
Josie Silver is one of my favorite romance authors and look forward to reading her books every year. I was not let down with this book. It had every element I love in a Silver book: realistic characters, realistic problems, a tad of a tragic background, overcoming grief, romance, and hope.
A Winter in New York is the perfect addition to your holiday TBR list.
I absolutely adored this book. I wanted to jump into it and live out the story myself. Anyone who has lived in New York will particularly understand how much of a vivid picture this novel was.
*Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I will always read a book by Josie Silver, but man, her books just keep getting better with each one. I loved this one. It was pure perfection. I couldn’t wait to read more.
This book is a delightful story of loss, finding yourself, and finding love in the process. To say I enjoyed this book is an understatement!!!!!!!!!!! I loved this book and its charming characters so much!!!!!!!!
This cements it...I am an unabashed, total Josie Silver fan! A Winter in New York begins with a meet-cute for the record books, and continues when Iris and Gio meet again a few months later, with Iris realizing that there is more to their story than Gio knows. Romance ensues, and I fell totally in love with Gio and the entire Belotti clan. The romance is epic, and the minor characters in the book are charming in the extreme.
I rated this one 3.5 stars (rounded to 4) because I just didn't understand why Iris felt she couldn't just 'fess up, at least about not really being a widow. The secret didn't seem to be as big a deal as was made of it, and, though I did enjoy the final scene, it seemed to be a bit neatly tied up, especially after the ultimatums made by both Felipe and Santo. It just didn't seem to hang true for me.
Josie Silver writes a great romance, and A Winter in New York is a solid addition to her body of work. It is not my favorite, but will especially resonate with romance readers who love New York, gelato, or big Italian families.
Thank you to Netgalley and Random House Publishing Group-Ballantine for the digital ARC of A Winter in New York by Josie Silver. The opinions in this review are my own.
4.5/5 stars
Josie Silver always delivers. This time with a heartwarming story of having the courage to start over in very different ways/circumstances.
Iris, a young chef, moves from England to NY abruptly and finds herself alone but for the memories of her mother’s time spent there. As she begins to discover the city, she comes across a family-run gelateria that is pictured in one of her mother’s old photos. She meets Gio, a widower raising his teenaged daughter and running the shop for his uncle who is hospitalized and in a coma. Upon awaking Gio’s uncle cannot remember the recipe for their famous gelato which Iris discovers is the exact same recipe that her mother always made…how is that possible and what is her mother’s connection to the shop?
This is a story with multiple facets…secrets, heartache for those lost, a mystery, and learning to step out to live again after traumatic life events. The characters are fun and lovely (both mains and secondaries). The plot, a bit frustrating at times, also shines with a slow-burn chemistry and all the feels of standing up for those we love and willing to sacrifice for their happiness above our own. I totally fell for Iris and Gio and am already anticipating Silver’s next endeavor.
Highly recommend.
My sincere thanks to the author, NetGalley and Dell for providing the free early arc of A Winter in New York for review. The opinions are strictly my own.
I'm afraid I might becoming a fan of romance! Certainly, I'm a fan of Josie Silver. A Winter in New York had enough steam for those who like it and not so much that those who don't like it can skim over it. :)
This story of found family and gelato had me wanting to visit NYC immediately. I really liked the book!
4.5 stars
Thank you netgalley for an ARC copy of A Winter In New York by Josie Silver!
I loved this sweet, winter story with flashbacks of previous family members and wanted to taste the famous gelato. I enjoyed the characters and the story. A Winter In New York releases Tuesday, October 3rd!
This book is so heartwarmingly beautiful, it makes winter feel a bit warmer.
I loved this book. I was laughing, on the verge of crying, and smiling throughout. It’s a quick read that quickly reminds you of the beauty of family, self-love, and acceptance.
I wouldn’t say this is your typical Christmas book. It definitely focuses more on the winter aspect instead of being a holiday book. But they touch on all the major holidays and they’re interwoven into the story.
I think the romance between Iris and Gio was done so well. But what really stood out to me was the focus on family, grief, and rediscovering yourself.
Iris was relatable in so many ways and I enjoyed seeing her pick herself up after the loss of her mom and leaving an abusive relationship. She was relatable but inspiring. Even though she did annoy me at certain points with her miscommunication, by the end I could kind of understand why she did it.
The only negative is that now I am fully craving gelato!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC! This book comes out October 3rd and you will not want to miss it this winter!
This was truly a delight! I loved this winter set story and the element of a chef, had me hook line and sinker!
I thought the writing was eloquent and the story was well developed. This will truly get you in the holiday spirit, even if you read it in September!
This is the 2nd book by the author that I have read (I own the other two but I haven't read them yet).
I really enjoy the author's writing style, characters and setting.
This book was like a warm hug. I loved the setting (fall/winter in New York) and it reminded me of all of the rom coms set in New York (there is a correlation). If you are looking for a nice cozy fall or winter read - I highly recommend this book.
Thank you to Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine for the Advanced Reader Copy!
Gelato lovers rejoice this book will have you reaching for the nearest container as you consume this book!
Iris has come to New York to explore her mothers life, and to escape an emotionally abusive relationship. This is her opportunity for a fresh start to find a job as a chef. She lands a position at a local noodle shop, befriending the owner, Bobby, his partner Robin and a cat Smirnoff.
A beautiful door in Little Italy falls in her sight invoking memories of a photo in her mother's albums. Its a family run Gelato establishment that is infamous for its vanilla flavor. Temporary closed as its patriarch has fallen ill, Iris discovers the secret recipe to their sought after flavor in her mothers scrapbook. A recipe she's grown-up with her whole life. What's the connection?
Gio's uncle Santo's holds the secret to family recipe, and without him the shop has closed because they can't make the gelato. Iris finds herself stepping through the door offering to help "recreate" the recipe without sharing she has it written down back in her apartment on a napkin.
Gio's been heartbroken since his wife's passing, reluctant to even date or consider finding love again until he meets Iris. They've met before but it was some months earlier at a local bookstore where comments were made leading Gio to believe certain truths about Iris. Past the point of no return, Iris must reveal the secrets hoping that it doesn't melt away the life she built in NY with Gio and his family.
This story is more than a romance, its a book about family, grief, hope and healing. Gio and Iris have the most amazing banter, chemistry and fun dates. I'm swooning over Gio's Italian sexy talk. This cast is everything!
Thank you Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine, Dell for the complimentary copy.
Ok, I thought I had this book pegged - I mean seriously, the premise is about a lost gelato recipe. I was just bracing myself for the cheese factor. But I needed a fun easy read so was here for it. But no no no… as soon as Gio and Iris has their first smooth (hello PG-13 dream scene!), to the emotional way everything came to a head (I ugly cried through the last 25% of this dang book), and was so unexpectedly surprised! Worth a read - don’t let the first 25% be your only impression…

Here’s to a fabulous book by Josie Silver! I really loved it from the first page all the way to the last. The love story of Iris and Gio felt like fate and definitely enjoyed reading their relationship unfolding. I loved the flashbacks of her Mom’s relationship with Santo. The whole Belotti family is fun and filled with so much love! (Coming from a big Italian family, Josie definitely described it perfectly)
This book was a sweet, heartwarming, light read that is coming out in time to get ready for the holiday season 🩵❄️
When Iris decides to move to New York to restart her life, she realizes she underestimated how big the Big Apple really is—all the nostalgic movies set in New York she’d watched with her mom while eating their special secret-recipe gelato didn’t quite do it justice. But Bobby, Iris’s best friend, isn’t about to let her hide away. He drags her to a famous autumn street fair in Little Italy, and as they walk through the food stalls, a little family-run gelateria catches her eye—could it be the same shop that’s in an old photo of her mother’s? Curious, Iris returns the next day and meets the handsome Gio, who tells her that the shop is in danger of closing. His uncle, sole keeper of their family’s gelato recipe, is in a coma, so they can’t make more. When Iris samples the last remaining batch, she realizes that their gelato and her gelato are one and the same. But how can she tell them she knows their secret recipe when she’s not sure why Gio’s uncle gave it to her mother in the first place? Iris offers her services as a chef to help them re-create the flavor and finds herself falling for Gio and his family. But when Gio’s uncle finally wakes up, all of the secrets Iris has been keeping threaten to ruin the new life—and new love—she’s been building all winter long.
Oh my heart! This story is just so precious! I read this in 2 sittings. What a special winter romance read! I loved that this wasn't an overtly Christmas book, but had Thanksgiving and Christmas aspects included. I enjoyed how much these two families were intertwined without really knowing it. It had a strong family presence while also have a strong found family connection which I loved. Gio must be protected at all cost! He's such a cinnamon roll hero. All he wants is to do right by his family and get the girl in the end except the girl is keeping a big secret that could ruin it all! Do yourself a favor and pick this one up!
Thanks to the publisher for the ARC in return for an honest review. This book releases 10/3
