That Others May Live is the 8th book in the FBI K-9 series by Sara Driscoll. I have really enjoyed this series and although it is great to have read them in order, it isn't necessary to read them all to enjoy this story. The story opens with a building collapse in Washington DC, where the bottom 2 floors were businesses and the top 8 were luxury condominiums. Meg Jennings and her search-and-rescue K-9 partner, Hawk, race to find survivors, but it doesn't look good. The building pancaked and spilled out, killing nearly everyone in the building, the underground garage and many on the street in front. They spend a few days looking for survivors, and it then becomes a recovery operation. Once again, Meg's future brother-in-law, who is also a reporter, gets information that this was not an accident but an act of domestic terrorism. Can Meg's team and her bosses find the people responsible, figure out why they did it and arrest them?
The author prefaces the book with a forward explaining where the idea of this story came from. The collapse of the apartment building in Miami a year of so ago, gave them their start to the story and if developed from there. This is a suspenseful story that really tears at the heartstrings. The loss of life was so sad, but very realistic in a collapse of this type. Not finding people alive takes a toll on the dogs and their handlers. I found that part of the story well written and emotional, but when they determined it was deliberately taken down and other buildings might also be in danger, the story ramped up. Who would do that and be responsible for so many deaths? What could possibly be the reason. All I will say is that this is a very timely issue, although not one that we should have to deal with. As the climax to the story came closer, the story was quick moving and gripping. With some twists, and lots of suspense, the story came to an unexpected, but satisfying conclusion. I have enjoyed this series and getting to know about the various types of K-9 dogs used by rescue workers and law enforcement.

"That Others May Live" by Sara Driscoll is a gripping and intense thriller that delves into the world of search and rescue operations. Set against the backdrop of a partially collapsed building near the White House, the novel follows Meg Jennings, a civilian consultant to the FBI's Forensic Canine Unit, and her canine partner, Hawk, as they search for survivors in the debris. Driscoll's writing vividly portrays the catastrophic destruction and the painstaking search process, making readers cheer for every successful rescue.
The story raises intriguing questions about the collapse of the building, which seems impervious to natural disasters. As the investigation unfolds, the Brotherhood of Libertas emerges as a potential suspect, motivated by a conspiracy theory that is both outlandish and lethal. While the characters may be paper-thin, the real heroes are the highly trained dogs, whose bravery and dedication shine throughout the narrative.
Driscoll's portrayal of the holiday season adds an emotional layer to the suspense, emphasizing the urgency of the rescue mission. Overall, "That Others May Live" is a tense and tragic thriller that will satisfy both existing fans of the series and newcomers alike. 📚🔍
Another epic book in the FBI K-9 series, which is easily my favorite series. Meg and Hawk are close to home in Washington DC on the site of a catastrophic building collapse. The dogs and their handlers are in a race against time and weather to find survivors. Meg's fiance, firefighter Todd, is also on the scene. Getting an inside look at what search and rescuers go through was pretty intense. As the search goes on, Meg's friend, and now brother in law, Clay McCord, is writing a story as a reporter for the Washington Post. And what he discovers will send Meg, and her colleague Brian, and their scent dogs, Hawk and Lacey, on a freezing hunt to find the mastermind behind the building collapse.
With the collapse in Florida a few years ago, and the more recent collapse in Iowa, it felt like this story was set tragically right in one of those doomed buildings.
This is a fantastic series, with a strong female lead, and also dogs. Talk about a win win. I love the meticulous research, and detailed writing, and I always learn so much from this author's books. I recommend the entire series, but this book would be easy to read on it's own too.
I was gifted an advance reader copy by the author, Netgalley and Kensington books, but my review is my honest opinion and not influenced by that in any way.
Well written…it’s real…it’s intriguing…it’s honest. A-great addition to the series.
Many thanks to Kensington and to Netgalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
More than most series, and especially this book, you are drawn into the mindset of first responders. Meg and her K-9 partner, Hawk, rush to the scene of the collapse of 12-story condo in downtown D.C. where the dust clouds are still rising, in hopes of rescuing victims. Detailing trying to search in the dangerous piles of debris and hoping for an alert from her dog of a human buried underneath, you can really appreciate the physical and intense emotional demands on the first responders...human and canine. I learned so much about structures and safety, as well as just enjoying a cracking good mystery.

An FBI K-9 Novel #8
Intense, tension-filled, riveting read ~ Thoroughly enjoyed this book!
What I liked:
* Being back with the wonderful characters in this series – would love to have them as friends
* Meg Jennings: FBI handler with the forensic canine unit, strong, resilient, team player, engaged, caring, compassionate, competent, admirable
* Tom Webb: Fireman and EMT, engaged to Meg, dedicated, professional, strong, supportive, there for and perfect for and with Meg
* Clay McCord: investigative journalist, with Meg’s sister Cara, working the story behind the Talbot Towers disaster, has an agreement with Meg and some others
* The other supporting characters: Cara, Brian, Ryan, the rest of the K-9 team, Cara’s parents and Emma
* The plot, pacing, setting, information learned, and the writing
* That I was swept into the story, cared about the outcome, and found myself admiring even more those that work in search & rescues and do that tough job
* The way the information all came together by the end of the story and the way the cause of the building’s collapse was found
* The dogs, the work they do, and the closeness of the K-9’s with their human partners
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about how evil some people in this world are

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the ARC – This is my honest review.
5 Stars
FBI K-9 handler Meg Jennings loves her job, but it takes its toll. As she approaches the scene of a collapsed twelve story apartment building, she steels herself for the day ahead. If they are to find survivors, time is of the essence. And while rescuers scramble to locate the living among the rubble, Washington Post reporter McCord struggles to discover the reason behind the collapse.
I found this book as frightening as it was captivating. It was a tale ripped from the headlines as it brought back memories of the Champlain Towers disaster in Florida. The intensity of the story builds as the search for survivors contrasts the search for answers. The care and caution taken by the search and rescue workers bumps against the urgency felt by the reporters as their investigation takes them in unexpected directions. As a result, the pace of the story ebbs and flows, the current of anticipation picking up speed as the tale nears its climax.
This the first of the FBI K-9 stories I have read. References to earlier stories in the series peaked my interest, but did not interfere with my enjoyment of this story. With well rounded, interesting characters and a detailed realism that is chilling at times, this novel is not to be missed.
That Others May Live by Sara Driscoll (FBI K-9 Mystery #8) 4 stars
A high rise building collapse is a major city - Inspired by a condo complex collapse in Florida, this book showcases the vital work performed by the Search and Rescue teams and first responders in the saving of lives and their role in providing closure to the families of the victims.
Meg Jennings and the entire K-9 team from the FBI is called in when a high rise luxury condo complex collapses in Washington D.C. Her fiancé is already on scene as a firefighter involved with rescue operations. What follows are harrowing days filled with danger and despair when rescue turns into recovery. A task force is set up to answer the main question – how did a relatively new structure collapse? Was it bad construction or a terrorist attack? It will take the combined efforts of authorities and the media to solve this mystery and bring the perpetrators to justice.
As always, Ms. Driscoll provides a well-researched book on K-9 procedures. The mystery was good and kept my attention. I look forward to the next book in this series.
Thank you Netgalley and Kensington Books for this ARC.

That Others May Live is the eighth book in the FBI K-9 series by Sara Driscoll. I had not read the other books in the series and enjoyed this one as a standalone book. I was so drawn into this book that I will definitely be reading the other books too!
This book had me so emotional. I had tears in my eyes many times while reading this. The story felt so real. I loved the characters and can’t wait to get to know them better.
This book had me on the edge of my seat. I loved how the story unfolded. The author had a special way of bringing me into the story and feeling as if I was there.
This is a Must Read for 2023!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is an outstanding book! It grabs you on the first page and doesn't let go. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat. It's an action packed emotional read that you don't want to miss.
I received a complimentary copy from Kensington Books via NetGalley and was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
This is a Women's Fiction/Suspense, and this is the 8th book in the FBI K-9 series. I have not read any of the other books in this series, but I do think you can read this book as a standalone without any problems. I have to say this book covers a hard to read topic, and there are details in this book that are very emotional. I cried at parts of this book. I loved a very emotional hard hitting book, and this book was that type of book. I loved the characters in this book, and I got pulled into the story so fast. I felt so much for the characters in this book while I was reading it. I loved the dogs in this book, and the cover is what made me want to read this book. This is a touching story, and it made me think about how much goes into saving people when something goes really wrong. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Kensington Books) or author (Sara Driscoll) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
That Others May Live is an emotionally charged, devastating story about a twelve-story residential and commercial building that fell down early one morning in Washington DC. This is one of the best stories in the FBI K-9 series in my opinion. The author did a wonderful job showing the emotions and horrors of the residents, family and friends of the victims as well as those of the workers, including the K-9 workers. The technical information about the building and explosives used showed that a great deal of research was done to bring this work to completion. I have enjoyed reading the series with Meg, her K-9 partner Hawk along with the rest of the civilian Human Scent Evidence Team, Meg's fiancé, Todd, sister, Cara and her fiancé and Washington Post reporter, Clay. These books are full of characters who work together to solve crimes and mysteries, find victims, and have a plot that seems to be something that could happen today. This is another winner.
I was given a copy for the purpose of an honest review. These are my thoughts.

4.5 hearts
I've loved reading this FBI K-9 series. It's one of the better ones for realistic work where the dogs are key in the story and do actual training and work. There is the police work the characters are doing with the dogs. The personal relationship of the teams, their friends and family is well developed.
In this investigation, a building has collapsed not 15 minutes from where Meg lives and only a few blocks from the White House. She is there with her K-9 Hawk, not 30 minutes after the collapse to hunt for survivors. Her fiancé, Todd a firefighter and paramedic, is also on shift. While Meg and Hawk search the piles and debris, Todd and his team are inside the part of the building standing to try to get everyone out safely.
The totality of the devastation is heartbreaking to the teams and the dogs who find few live survivors. The work is physically and emotionally exhausting but so important. McCord, the journalist, comes with Meg the first day to the command center. He starts looking at the how / why it collapsed. He gets construction plans and consults a structural engineering expert. This eventually leads to the facts of how destructive false conspiracy theories are.
The realistic details and complexity of the case with police and rescue issues and structural engineering and construction details are amazing. That Others May Live is not focused on romance. There are romantic details and the day to day support of good partnership and support circle of friends and family. The strength of the police procedural with its mystery and strong search and rescue depictions are appreciated.
The time setting is the week before Christmas and Meg is planning her wedding to Todd. So while the event is grim, the excellent characters have heartwarming moments. And the dogs are the best, too.
Hawk was amazing, with his handler Meg. Trying to find survivors after a building collapsed in downtown D.C.
With an overall sense of danger and a fear that any misstep could cause what remains standing to crumble they race to find those who might have found a pocket and survived.
When evidence starts to point to it being a suspicious event they join forces to try and find the person responsible before another event can occur.
I felt the tension reading this and my heart went out to those who have to fulfill this need. It felt very close to the events of 9/11 and what they must have gone through. The toll it took on Meg and the need to keep Hawk motivated to search was palpable. A great if not hard book to read. The suspense was great, and I was fully engaged.
A methodical and painstaking investigation into the collapse of Talbot Terrace, an apartment building in D.C. Meg Jennings, with the Human Scent Evidence Team, and her partner Brian are called to hunt for survivors with their K9’s Hawk and Lacey. The scene is horrific as the layers of the building have pancaked on top of each other. The death toll will be even higher as part of the building collapsed onto the busy street. Meg’s fiancé, Todd Webb, a paramedic and firefighter is also called to the scene. What could have caused this ten-story building to collapse? Witnesses thought they heard the sound of a boom before it collapsed. Could this have been just a tragedy waiting to happen or something more sinister? Meg and her team will not rest until they find any individuals who have survived. A discovered clue will lead the investigators to the dark web and a possible domestic terrorism threat. A race to find out what really happened and why will keep you turning the pages until the exciting end! Loved it! I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)
That Others May Live is Sara Driscoll’s eight book in her FBI K-9 series. This is an emotional, action packed story that grabs you from the start and keeps you on the edge of your seat till the very end. It is well written and realistic. It’s tragic and intense and filled with suspense, tension, many twists, shock and horror. Ms. Driscoll does manage to add some good stuff in it also but I won’t say what. I highly recommend you read this one to find out, you will not be disappointed.
Thank you NetGalley, Kensington Books and Sara Driscoll for this heart wrenching story to read and review. The opinions expressed are my own.

WOW, this was an outstanding book. I could not put it down. I was sucked in from the first page and held on for dear life all they way till the end. It was so descriptive that it felt like you were right there for every breath holding moment of the building collapse and rescue. It was just such a excellent book.
That Others May Love, the eighth book in the FBI K-9 series by Sara Driscoll, is an emotional in depth look at first responders in the face of a catastrophic disaster. I was riveted from start to finish. Sara Driscoll writes with such clarity I felt as if I had a window to the disaster. Also, I appreciated the definitions for technical terms at the start of each chapter ---I like to learn new-to-me info.
The story opens just before Christmas when a twelve story building collapses. The first two floors are for shops and the top has a pool---all the floors in-between are residences. It is a sobering thought when such disasters have actually occurred.
Meg and Hawk are called to the scene to help locate victims in the rubble, her fiancé, Todd is already there. I felt the tension, shock and fear as they steadily searched out living victims and mounted rescues. Meanwhile, there is the push to discover the "why" of the collapse-- was it shoddy building practices? a bomb? a targeted hit?
I enjoyed the deepening bonds between Meg and Todd abd the insight to the wedding planning. I look forward to that, and to more in this series. Though I have read them all, each can be read as a standalone with no trouble.

Thank you for the EARC to read and review---all opinions and thoughts are my own.
I remember watching the news after one of the Champlain Towers fell. The fire fighters, search and rescue, everyone working frantically, but methodically, to find anyone in the rubble. This was very much in my mind as I read That Others May Live. I could easily picture Meg, her K-9 Hawk, and the other rescue teams as they searched the pile for survivors. The holes they crawled through that were just big enough for the rescuer (my claustrophobic mind definitely shuddered at that). It also made me think of rescuers searching the pile at the World Trade Center. My heart actually hurt, and I teared-up a little, when the search moved from rescue to recovery.
I enjoyed as the author explained some of the technical aspects of rescuing survivors in a collapse, and how important taking care of a K-9 partner is. The author also started each chapter with different building terminology, which I thought was very interesting information.
I enjoyed this book so much. It gave me all the feels. I cannot imagine doing rescue and recovery on a daily basis. The emotional toll on the rescuer and their K-9 must be tremendous. I thank them all for their service.
Many thanks to the author, Kensington, and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor or expectation.
Bring home the ones you can.
A highly well researched novel...so well done it could have passed for nonfiction at times...that leaves you emotionally spent along with the main characters in the aftermath of highrise collapse in Washington DC right before the jolliest time of the year.
