Wow what a read. this book grabbed me from the moment that I started reading it and there was no putting it down. It moves along at a speed that is perfect for this story, speeding up and slowing down as needed. The characters are so read that you feel as though you know them and no matter what happens you will love them. This book is a must read read. It needs to be at the top of your TBR list, there is no doubt about it.
What a great book that caught my attention from the start! Meg and her K9 Hawk are part of a FBI team who are called in to help with a rescue after a 12 story high rise condo building collapsed.
What I enjoyed:
*The start of each chapter giving info on high rise design.
*The action, anticipation & emotional toll of the rescue mission.
*Hawk.
I really enjoyed this book and the emotional punch it took. My favorite part was Hawk and the bond he has with his handler Meg. This was well researched and so realistic.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for my approval to read and review this book.
This was my first book by Sara Driscoll, and it won't be the last. This is book 8 in the FBI K9 series. The story beings with an unexpected 12 Storey building collapse in a suburb of Washington DC. Meg from FBI K9 section is called in with the rest of the 4 person team with their live scent dogs to find survivors with in the area. Her fiance Tom Webb is a firefighter / paramedic and he is responsible in helping to evacuate the structure and even puts his own life at risk whilst performing his job. Clay McCord is married to Cara (Meg's sister) and he is a newspaper reporter for the Washington Post. Clay uncovers some information that will help the authorities bring whomever caused the building to collapse - was it an accident or sabotage? Well, only you will need to read the book to find out how it all ends!!
That others may live,
Sara Driscoll.
Conspiracy thriller.
It's monday, And things are all good accept for that twelve story, Condo Collapsing..
I will say my favorite characters in this book are Meg and Hawk, her dog... Of course, dogs are some of my favorite People And I love that this author has Dogs in every book. A book with a dog is everything. 🐾
Meg, Along with her partners and the dogs search and Rescue .the dogs Search The Rubble. For victims. And The living.. The dogs can find things humans can not.. Dogs can smell and hear things that we humans cannot..
Finding everyone, is an absolute must in the shortest amount of time. Saving lives is what they do.. But finding out what caused the collapse. Could fall between the cracks.. Searching for victims. Sometimes while digging for victims, You find more than you were expecting..
For me this book was an absolute thriller, One that kept you on the edge of your seat, Simply because you wanted to know if they were going to find that next victim, that next body or that Pet..🐾
Absolutely a wonderful read, Thank you,
Sara Driscoll For another Absolutely wonderful story.

Wow, what an emotional, and exciting book. Captivated me from the start. Meg and her K9 unit are called into action during the collapse of a building. The story takes the reader through the emotional and physical journey of the rescue workers who tirelessly work round the clock in these situations to try to find as many survivors as they can. It is a powerful tribute to all those who risk their lives so "Others May Live.", as well as the victims of such crimes. While I have not read every book in the series, this can be a stand alone, and is a wonderful book.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Absolutely fantastic, so realistic. Definitely gripping that won’t let you stop reading until you’ve finished. Meg and her dog are part of a team to rescue or find Heartbreaking, dangerous and sometimes fulfilling. Didn’t disappoint.
3.25/5⭐️
OK, full disclosure. I came into this series with this book (8th in series) and was aware that I had missed out on a WHOLE LOT of background material because of that. I was still able to work most things out, but I’m sure I would have benefitted more from reading the previous books. This started out very slow for me but picked up as it went along with the rescue attempts and all that is involved with those.
Meg Jennings, an FBI K-9 handler, and her fiancé firefighter/paramedic Todd Webb are called to the site of a 12-story luxury apartment collapse in downtown Washington DC. As Meg works with her canine, Hawk, and Todd works to clear the remaining structure, they must put aside their emotions and exhaustion to focus on the recovery effort. Meanwhile, Meg’s brother-in-law Clay McCord, an investigative reporter for the Washington Post, begins digging to try and uncover the “why” of the collapse…structural failure, terrorism, etc.
While sometimes interesting, I did feel like I was bombarded with minute details about government agencies, building/architect jargon and other things that slowed everything down. I felt like less of these details and more development of the cause of the collapse might have been better served as I felt that the discovery behind the destruction was found entirely too quickly/conveniently.
I also felt that the Meg/Todd relationship seemed rather stiff at times and not as loving as I would have expected from spouses-to-be.
So overall, while well written, and I’m sure a good addition to the previous books, I think maybe this was just not meant for me personally.
My sincere thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Books for providing the free early arc of That Others May Live for review. The opinions are strictly my own.
I loved this book! It gripped me from the first page until the end! It is a chilling, emotional account of the collapse of a high-rise residential condo building, and the dedicated rescue teams, with their K9 partners that work tirelessly together at the site of the tragedy. The book starts as the FBI K-9 teams, and other first responders are summoned just after the collapse. It is a well written, well researched book that made me realize the full extent of what these types of rescue teams, along with their specially trained dogs are capable of. Each chapter starts with an explanation of the various aspects of building design for a high rise of this type, which greatly enhanced both the story and my understanding the dangers that both the victims and the rescuers faced. There was one harrowing rescue where I simply could not put the book down! The latter part of the book details the investigation into why the building collapsed and it is frighteningly realistic. Sara Driscoll (Jen J. Danna) wrote in the beginning of the book that the collapse of the building in Surfside, Florida was her inspiration. The book is a fitting tribute to all first responders, and K9s, as well as the victims in all tragedies of this type. Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for my advanced copy. The opinions of the review are my own.
When a DC apartment building suddenly collapses, Meg and her dog Hawk, along with the other members of her FBI scent team, are called to help with the search for survivors. Her firefighter fiancée Todd is also on site, beginning the dangerous task of searching the still standing wing for survivors. Any wrong move could bring the rest of the building down on the rescuers. Was the collapse caused by a structural defect or something more sinister?
This is a tense, emotional read which focuses on the dangers, hardships, and emotional toll that rescue personnel face after a disaster. It grabbed me from the very first page.
I like all of Sara Driscoll’s stories with Hawk they are all excellent. This one I didn't think had the emotional kick that others had. In my opinion, too much was spent on the technical details it kept you at arm's length from the pain and misery all around her. It may be just me so read for yourself and find out. I respect what she was doing and understand why and how but it just made me not quite feel as much. Hawk is an amazing tool and loved by Meg and that always makes it worthwhile to read. The characters are all wonderful, caring, and deeply vested in what they do. Such a wonderful service that really goes on when needed.
Thank you, NetGalley, and publishers Kensington Books for this ARC this is my honest opinion.
WOW! That Others May Live took me back to the collapse of the Champlain Towers South, in Surfside Florida in 2021. The collapse of that building has the building in Florida where my parents live undergoing major structural repairs for that last two years and still going on. This book hit close to home for me.
This was a captivating story that grabbed me from the beginning. It was intense, emotional and kept me totally engaged and fascinated with the search and rescue by handlers and their dogs.
Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Books for the opportunity to read this book.
This is the eighth book in the FBI K-9 series. It was sparked by the building collapse in Florida that made national news. This is set in the D.C. area.
FBI handler Meg Jennings and her search-and-rescue K-9 partner, Hawk, furiously search to find survivors after a building collapses, and find that the stakes are higher than ever before. Meg is also planning her wedding which takes a back seat to the search & rescue.
I liked the strong characters, the sense of family & forcing each other to take care of themselves and the concern for each other’s mental & physical well-being.
This was an intense read and the mystery lies in what caused the collapse. I figured out the how but not the rational. I enjoyed the book but had to take several days to read it due to the intensity and descriptions.
I recommend this thriller/mystery if you like intensity and strong characters. There was a good mix of male and female characters pulling for each other. I found it enjoyable to see so many governmental and federal agencies working together to find survivors and the cause of the collapse. I learned a lot about structural integrity in this book.
I was given and advanced readers copy from Netgalley and these are my own opinions.
Sara Driscoll hits it out of the park again. I love the bond she portrays between the handlers and their dogs. The story is also something that could/has happened in real life which makes it all the more engaging to read. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next!
That Others May Live will remind readers of the collapse of the Champlain Towers South in Surfside Florida a few years ago. And that’s intentional. “Driscoll” knew she wanted to tackle the idea of a major building collapse. It’s an emotional read. Meg and Hawk are called out in the early morning as soon as the collapse of a condo building in downtown DC is known. Todd is already on the job, so he is also a first responder.
Driscoll takes us through each excruciating moment of trying to rescue people after a twelve story building comes down. Endless to say, the rescues are few. The first half of the book is taken up with this. It’s not until the book moves into the second half that she explores why the collapse occurred. It then becomes a little technical, which was fine by me. I like when authors don’t assume their fiction readers can’t handle science or engineering. The tempo of the book remains low key yet it totally captures the stress of working in such a volatile situation. Those looking for a high octane finish will be disappointed.
Sara Driscoll was the pseudonym used by Ann Vanderlaan and Jenna Danna. Ann passed away last year, so it is now just Jenna writing the books. The writing did feel a bit different, but it still incorporated the detailed descriptions of how the dogs work.
I have read the entire series, but I do think the book could easily be read as a stand-alone.
My thanks to Netgalley and Kensington Books for an advance copy of this book.
An informative story about how a building can collapse, how survivors are rescued and how it effects the rescuers.
The story is told through the eyes of Meg, a member of the Human Scent Evidence team. We follow with Meg and her rescue dog, her relationship with her firefighter fiance and the chase for the bad guys.
First the collapse, then the search for survivors, then the recovery of the remains, then discovering how the building collapsed. It is technical but very interesting.
Within the technical stuff there is the human aspect. How this effects the workers/rescuers.
The writing is clearly descriptive. You feel like you are carefully walking on the fallen concrete slabs and crawling through a small opening to reach a survivor trapped in a void while feeling vibrations and hearing creaks overhead. Many tense, scary and exciting scenes.
I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
If you’re like me, always on the lookout for a great series, this one is for you. I’ve read all but a few (which I will be reading soon) of this FBI K-9 series by Sara Driscoll. A toppled residential tower is a difficult place to work, but Meg and her K-9 Hawk wouldn’t be anywhere else. With Hawk’s nose and Meg’s leadership, this story takes you through the horror and grief of the families waiting for news of their loved ones, to the exhaustion and risk that the search and rescue teams take, to the glimpses of Meg’s life outside of work where she deals with those emotions and has the support of her family, friends, and the rest of her FBI team.
That Others May Live is like number eight in the FBI K-9 novel series. Though it could probably be read as a standalone for the current case, a lot of important character history and development that make the main players lovable would be lost. A twelve story building as collapsed and the death toll is expected to be high. FBI agent Megan, her search and rescue dog, Hawk and the other members of search and rescue have been called in to find any survivors. The environment is dangerous and the good news is minimal. The FBI must figure out the cause and Meg’s brother-in-law and ace reporter for the Washington Post, Craig blows the case wide open with his investigation. The novel conveys the pure heartbreak of the tragedy that is made even more real by the fact something like this has happened before. The author presents clear precise information on engineering and construction to make the story have a feel of realism. The physical and mental wear and tear on emergency services is shown and the damage caused by false truths and hate make for a believable tale that will have you checking the concrete columns in all the buildings you visit. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from NetGalley.
How could a building just over 30 years old collapse? Rescue teams were called in including some of the finest from all over the Eastern seaboard. Meg with her rescue dog Cody began at the top of the pile looking for survivors. The F.B.I. and other teams were called in because of the smell of explosives.
Sara Driscoll writes with clarity and authority. The description of the building methodology made it seem that there was little chance of a collapse.
Could it have been a foreign power or enemy of the United States? This book explains the investigative process and subsequent means of identifying the culprits. Enjoy! 5 stars – CE Williams
A suspenseful and captivating read.
An apartment building in DC collapses on a cold December morning resulting in a call out to SAR and multiple first responders. This was well researched and the reader learns about the procedures and technicalities of such a massive undertaking and gets a better understanding of the work SAR teams do. We also get to experience the elation of finding survivors, the anxiety and fear of the danger, the overwhelming sadness and the anger of the situation.
I really like the characters and their relationships and friendships. Of course I love the dogs.
Thank you Netgalley, Kensington, and the author for this ARC
I love reading K9 books. Sara Driscoll does not disappoint me and gives each story she writes such in depth scouting and the dogs training and facts about them are always interesting.
