Laurel Thibodeau, owner of a popular restaurant, is brutally murdered. Suspicion quickly falls on her husband Simon because of his debts, gambling problems and the life insurance policy he will benefit from. Now six friends gather to celebrate the birthday of Alice Stone and, of course, to discuss the murder. Alice’s husband Damian, a semi-successful documentary filmmaker and obsessive bicyclist is there. Also present are Georgia “Reverend George” Fitzhugh, her soon to be ex-husband Ritchie, and their teenage daughter Chloe. The are joined by police chief Max Barbosa and handsome psychiatrist Farley Drake. It will be a long evening. Everyone is keeping deeply buried secrets, whether they know it or not, and these secrets will leader to a murderer. And just maybe this killer will not be Laurel Thibodeau’s killer.

There are six main characters in Who to Believe and each character tells the events of the day of the party in their own voice. These different points of view, sometimes intentionally repetitive and always compelling, slowly move the plot to conclusion. This unique style pulls the reader in from the first page and does not let go until the last. 5 stars.

If you haven’t read Edwin Hill, you should.

Welcome to Monreith, Massachusetts. Once a small community but now commuters have taken over with well-to-do couples and young families. It’s on the coastline and can still feel country.

Laurel owns a popular restaurant until she is found dead in her home. Murdered. Of course the husband is a suspect. Life insurance, gambling debts, it all points to him. And someone is glad.

At the Stone house, Alice is ready to celebrate her fortieth birthday. Along with the police chief, Max, who she is more than a little attracted to. And no, he isn’t her husband.

Along with friends, Richard, his Unitarian minister wife, Georgia, and their teenaged daughter. And now that Richard is living with Farley, the shrink to more than one of them, and not everyone is pleased.

IN the end, one will die. And I was gobsmacked by who and why! I suspected everyone of these people. Every. One. That is how twisted and crazy good this was.

Edwin Hill is incredible at creating stories that will truly keep their reader on their feet from the first page to the last. Who to Believe is formatted in such an interesting way that keeps you on your toes, told in the perspective of 7 characters of a small town where a murder has just occurred, each explaining their own story of what has played out over the past ~48ish hours. Each of these characters has their own secrets that they are holding close to them. As you read through each perspective, you think you are getting closer and closer to figuring out who committed this crime. I thought I had this one solved multiple times, and I kept being highly mistaken.

I highly recommend this creative suspense filled novel to all who are interested. This book will be published January 23, 2024.

Locked room mystery with room full of suspects and red herring who all have motive. This was fantastic. I gobbled it up guessing the way through.

Who To Believe is a locked room mystery where everyone has a motive but their is only one killer.

A local restaurant owner turns up dead. The likeliest suspect is her husband, but did her really do it?

A group get together for a friends birthday. One of the group turns up dead and as time goes by everyone has a reason for the killing. A myriad of towns folks have heard rumors and snippets of information that could prove helpful.

This thriller kept me going straight through. I didn't put it down except to go to work and to sleep.

you will enjoy it too

I really enjoyed this mystery. Each section was told from a different perspective and I was kept guessing until the very end. Some of the sections felt a little too long for me but for the most part, I flew through the book.

This was my first novel by Edwin Hill. I will have to say that his writing is entertaining and an enjoyable read. My favorite was the perspective from the dog. A nice "whodunnit" with twists and turns with somewhat complex characters.

I loved this who done it!

Friends gather for Alice Stone's birthday and after a local death occurs. This is no ordinary mystery though as there are complex relationships and many, many secrets - maybe even a serial killer or two! Join us at the celebration and see what you can make out of the discussion, disappointments and hidden agendas. I bet you will be surprised, and isn't that the best kind of mystery book of all?
