This was an interesting twisty little tale. A good audiobook for my purposes, which is to have something to listen to when I'm falling asleep or in the car--enough of a mystery to make me look forward to the next listening session.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to What the Neighbors saw early.
I could not get into this, it was hard to follow and didn't hold my attention, sorry.
I really enjoyed WHAT THE NEIGHBORS SAW by Melissa Adelman! I listened to the audiobook and I loved that there’s two narrators for the dual POV in this story. The narrators Hillary Huber and Sarah Hollis were both great! It’s about Alexis, new Mom, who moves into a new swanky neighborhood and meets a new friend Blair whose husband is murdered. I enjoyed how Alexis’s new house is a money pit which puts stress on her relationship with her husband. There were a couple good twists and I enjoyed this thriller all the way to the end.
This is a pretty fast paced story even though the setup was way too long. The reveal of who killed Teddy was juicy, but not really a big shock. I did enjoy this debut novel and look forward to more from this author. I listened to it partially as an audiobook and the dual narrators for Alexis and Blair weren't necessarily needed, but they kept my interest in each character.
I could not get into this book as the narrator was too boring and monotone for me to truly enjoy the writing. If I would have read this book myself I may have found it more fun and interesting to read. I think it is wise to choose narrators who lighten your books instead of pull them down.
4 1/2 out of 5 stars
Sam and Alexis have been looking for a house that will be perfect for their growing family as Alexis is pregnant with their second child. When they come across a fixer upper in a very exclusive neighborhood it seems too good to be true and of course it is. Shortly after the couple show up one of their neighbours turns up dead. As Alexis begins to try and find out what happens she uncovers many secrets upon the people in the neighborhood. There is also the issue that Sam is acting very strange. A good mystery that will hold your attention. I suggest you read it!
Alexis and her husband Sam seem to be on the right path in life. Sam, it seems, is about to be made a partner at the law firm he works for, Alexis is pregnant with the couple’s second child, and they have just bought their dream home, a Cape Cod house that does need a bit of work. Luckily the neighbors, who all seem so glamorous and well put together, welcome their new neighbors with open arms. All seems right in Alexis’s life, for a time, but soon the image of perfection that surrounds the neighborhood is shattered when Teddy, a long-time resident, is found dead on the banks of the Potomac River. While many are desperate for answers, they are less than prepared when secrets begin to make their way to the surface, secrets with the potential to change the lives of many who knew Teddy, and Alexis is no exception.
This novel was just okay in my opinion. It seemed like there were a lot of details and information presented that had little to nothing to do with the storyline, almost like it was there in an attempt to dissuade or trick the reader into thinking a certain way or just for filler. I also struggled to relate to any of the characters; they were either too unrealistic or too different from an average person. I really struggled to make it through this novel and I’m not sure I would have read it all if it wasn’t a review copy.
The audiobook didn’t bring any extra enjoyment to What The Neighbors Saw. The pace was way too slow, even during the bigger events of the narrative. While I appreciated that there were two narrators, representing the two points of view, they were both too monotone in their delivery and lacked inflection, making it hard to get into the story.
I love a juicy thriller, and WHAT THE NEIGHBORS SAW delivered. It was more slow burn pacing but there were plenty of twists!
I paired the book with the audiobook and loved reading this way.
*many thanks to the publisher and Macmillan Audio and Netgalley for the gifted copy
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! No spoilers. Beyond amazing I enjoyed this book so very much. The characters and storyline were fantastic. The ending I did not see coming Could not put down nor did I want to. Truly Amazing and appreciated the whole story. This is going to be a must read for many many readers. Maybe even a book club pick. Our library purchased and our patrons have been checking out and and enjoying the book. I see it is a popular book club choice as well we hope to have more oppurtinies to support authors like them
I did not finish this one, it was not for me, I couldn't relate to the characters, and just did not care for the story.
This is a medium paced thriller filled with neighborhood drama. A quick read with good characters, twists, and mystery, I really enjoyed this one. If you like drama with a side of murder this is for you!
The audiobook is well done.
What the Neighbors Saw is a juicy, gossipy book with a few unsettling twists and an ending that pleasantly surprised me. I strongly disliked the main character, Alexis, up until the end. I am unsure if the author’s intention was to make her so whiny, but she was fairly pitiful with all of her complaints about the hardships she had faced. Granted, I do not believe any of the characters were intended to be likable. The story itself flowed well and always kept my interest. Any sex and violence in the story were kept to a minimum; a feature I greatly appreciate. Two thumbs up for What the Neighbors Saw. I will certainly be keeping my eye out for future thrillers from Melissa Adelman.
This book really sucked me in. The who done it aspect was real. However, it was anticlimactic. I feel like I did not get the closure I needed and I don't believe this book is the beginning of a series. It just kind of ended.
This novel is slightly disappointing. It starts of extremely entertaining, and I enjoyed being introduced to each character, but after about the 40% mark, I felt tired and bored. The story drags on for way too long, and I reluctantly finished it. I think some readers will enjoy this story if they are newer to the domestic suspense genre.
What the Neighbors Saw was a great domestic thriller - the description comparing it to "Desperate Housewives" and "The Couple Next Door" is so accurate! Filled with neighborhood drama and murder, the twist surprised me with this one. I didn't particularly love any of the characters, but they came together to create a good and suspenseful story.
2.5 stars (rounded down).
"What the Neighbors Saw" by Melissa Adelman is a short book with a couple of well-done plot points, but it feels like the story goes on forrrreeeeeevvvverrrrrr, which brought my opinion of it down quite a bit. This book feels like the tale of two stories, neither of which are resoundingly compelling. There is a relatively successful domestic drama portion and the murder-y mystery portion with a twist ending that left me annoyed because of how quickly and randomly it wraps up. This book is eerily similar to myriad other titles that have been released in the last few years involving awful wealthy people doing increasingly horrendous things to their family members, friends, and neighbors. The market for this kind of book is horribly oversaturated right now, so Adelman needed to do something unique and bold to differentiate her novel from the pack. Unfortunately, that just doesn't happen here. The first half is more engaging than the last half, but there is a woeful lack of character development throughout. I hated all of the characters here, and not just because they were rude or mean people. They are just so unlikable that it's hard to sympathize with any of them for anything. I have a feeling most wealthy people are like this in real life. It feels like some parts of the story drag on and on and on for little to no purpose other than filling a word count. I will admit, I thought the ending was fine, but it felt so abrupt and out of nowhere that I didn't have time to savor and enjoy the reveal. All in all, I wouldn't recommend this book and didn't love it. If anything, I would recommend the audiobook simply for the awesome narration by Hillary Huber and Sarah Hollis. Killer narration!
Thank you to NetGalley, Melissa Adelman, St. Martin's Press, and Minotaur Books for the complimentary ARC of this book. All opinions are my own. I was not compensated for this review.
3.5 This was okay! It took me a long time to finish which is odd for me and an Audiobook but it did feel like it dragged on in some parts, and I went back and forth if I like Alexis’s or not but in the end I did like her! I thought Blair was an interesting character and I enjoyed her POV and I had my ideas of what the twist was and I was half right with it! And I was shocked at the other half! But I did feel like there was a lot filler with the neighbourhood and neighbours than needed to be! I listened to the audiobook and thought the narration was done well!

What the Neighbors Saw is a dual POV told through the perspectives of new neighbour, Alexis, and established neighbour, Blair. After a death in the neighbourhood, secrets and drama come to light and leave Alexis wondering just what kind of neighbourhood she’s moved into.
The story reads quickly, but the plot progresses slowly. I didn’t feel any of the characters were well flushed out and a lot of time was spent on plot points that didn’t add to the story as a whole.
I do want to specifically say that I was not a fan of all the talk about losing baby weight. The constant weight related talk really bothered me and I wish it wasn’t so heavily focused on. I don’t know if it was to accentuate the superficiality of the neighbourhood, but I didn’t think it had any point.
The narrators kept me listening to this story as overall it was just fine for me. The ending was interesting but the journey there made it feel kind of weird and abrupt. I wish we had more background on Blair and Teddy.
Thank you Macmillan Audio for the audio copy in exchange for an honest review.
I was provided a Netgalley copy for review.
I devour psych and domestic thrillers so I enjoyed this to an extent and yet it is a slow burn so if you are not a regular reader of this genre this might feel a bit slow and anticlimactic.
What I did like and always enjoy is multiple narrators( especially audiobook format)
The struggle of being a mother with a bad coparent/partner was portrayed well.
The bougie family neighborhood was developed
I enjoyed some of the realness of those aspects
And the main character and her struggles.
And yet
I felt like nobody was likable, the story wasn't developed. There wasn't a lot of interaction with other characters- it felt much like it was incomplete
I felt it was fairly predictable except for one weird twist. Weird. Lol
I will read this author again, I do like the writing style, however the plot just didn't do it for me. It had so much potential.
Thanks netgalley!
This neighborhood thriller was well narrated by two different women/characters allowing the reader to hear the story unfold from their perspectives. The narration was top notch! I really enjoyed the story and the twist ending!
