This was actually way funnier than I thought it would be but overall it took me so long to go through because of the lack of action. Also, I didn’t really like the characters and couldn’t identify to them which made this reading even more painful. I feel like the more you get into the book the more you start to like it but it took too long for me it was already a lost cause. I’m so sad though because it’s not bad at all it’s just me and my attention span.
I absolutely adored Gwen and Art Are Not in Love. It took me a little bit to get to know the characters but once I did I fell in love with them all. And I didn’t only love the romantic relationships but the friendships as well. I think my favorite duo in the book was Arthur and Sidney. Their friendship was the best with the laughter and banter between them.
This was a fun story about finding and being true to yourself. It doesn’t matter what time period you’re in, you love who you love.
I really enjoyed the narrators in the audiobook. They did a fantastic job of bringing the story to life.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the advanced copy. All thoughts are my own.
The narrators are the biggest stars of this audiobook. It was fun and fast paced. It isn't perfect by any stretch, but it wasn't trying to be. It was just what it was and that is enough. Fans of the Mackenzi Lee will have a lot to like here. The swapping narrators was a good touch and the end was just right. We didn't need an epilogue. Lots of books like this would have that and it would ruin a lot of the work.
What an absolute delight! Gwen & Art Are Not in Love is a triumph of queer historical fiction, romantic comedy, and just plain fun. I had a blast with Arthur and Gwen, both hilarious in their own right, and loved this tale of queer enemies to found family. A refreshing romp that I couldn't put down!
I found this story unexpectedly lovable and addicting. I was happily surprised by the humor and how well the story flowed. Having read a lot of lgbtq+ romances in the past few years Gwen & Art Art Not in Love stands out in the way that it entertains. I would love to see this made into a show or a movie.
I LOVE LEX CROUCHER!!!!! Okay, this book is NOT an Arthurian retelling. It is set in the "future" of Arthurian legend where this book's Arthur is a descendent of The King Arthur. Anyways, he is betrothed to Gwen. They hate each other. No this is not rivals to lovers. Arthur loves kissing boys, Gwen loves swooning over a certain female knight. Its great its wonderful, they discover the truth of King Arthur's relationships with his knights and have to deal with a rebellion! Its got action, its got the love, and Lex Croucher easily became a favorite, instant buy author of mine! I highly recommend their books you wont regret it.
Thank you to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for this ALC! ♥
Gwen & Art Are Not in Love is funny, witty, delightful, touching, and just the right amount of irreverently ahistorical to make for an exciting romp of the book. Alex Singh was quite good as a narrator. I enjoyed his cadence and thought it brought Arthur to life in the moments when he was being sassy particularly well. However, there were several lines where characters were supposed to be morose and still came across VERY chipper. That said, Sarah Ovens was excellent. I thought she was pitch-perfect and particularly liked scenes where Gwen and Bridget talked. Overall, very enjoyable.
The first half of Gwen & Art Are Not in Love was a bit slow for me. I'm not a historical fiction person and I found a lot of the set up a bit slow. I almost gave up on it but I'm SO SO SO glad I pushed through. If the first 1/3-1/2 was a bit slow, the rest of the book was absolutely incredible. I loved how the action picked up, I loved the development of the characters, and I loved the twists and turns. I could not stop reading for the second half of the book. I absolutely adored the main characters, particularly Arthur and Sidney, and I love how they tried to forge their own paths. I absolutely recommend this for classroom, school, and public libraries. I think a wide variety of people would adore this book as well from those who like retellings to King Arthur and historical fiction fans to those who like romance to those who like action and adventure. Definitely recommend!

Thank you NetGalley for granting me access to a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
it took me three long months to finally finish this book. the amount of times i dnf and then picked back was insane. i loooooved the idea of this book, but lost interest so fast.
Honestly I didn’t think Lex could top Infamous, I loved it so, so much…but this was absolutely brilliant, as good…maybe even better? I don’t know, I can’t make that call but I definitely loved every single second of it! It’s charming, sweet, funny, exciting, and drenched in wit as sharp as Excalibur Nine.
If you haven’t read any of Lex’s previous releases (For shame! Remedy this immediately!), it’s good to know the stories always tend to have a kind of dark dip around three quarters of the way through but then it pops back up in mood at the end. Personally, I love the complexity it adds to the stories but if you’re fully expecting just happy, silly vibes all the way through it might be a little unexpected.
The audiobook performances were perfection, I loved both narrators and thought they captured the mood of the story really well and gave it even more life.
Far and away one of my very favorite authors, I will read anything Lex ever deigns to grace us mere mortal readers with and am currently now rabidly awaiting both Trouble and, especially, Not For the Faint of Heart!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The storyline was fun and lighthearted yet targeted some deeper content. I think the voice actors did a fantastic job at bringing the characters to life.
I plan to make a post about this book for a Valentine's Day feature highlighting both romantic and platonic love!
I think I was expecting the early 2000’s movie type Shakespeare adaptation but unfortunately for me it didn’t quite interest me.
Unfortunately, I lost the audiobook download when my NetGalley App glitched so I will not be able to review this properly as it has been archived.
An incredibly fun take on the King Arthuer/Gwen fable that everyone knows quite well. The characters were all very unique and entertaining. A second installment would be good too just to see how everyone is keeping up and growing in to their new roles and romances!
Oh my goodness how this queer retelling of the legend of King Arthur took me by surprise! I really didn’t know what to expect but I wanted something light and fun to kick off the new year, and wow did this deliver! I binged it in a day, cackling all the while at the delightful dialogue between these characters. Total Knight’s Tale vibes. Really funny and charming. I didn’t want it to end. The dynamic between Art and Sidney in particular absolutely killed me. Both narrators were so charming and funny, knowing exactly how to affect some of the specific sarcasm and humor made funnier by their delivery. First 5 star review of 2024!
Maaaaaan I was so excited to love this one, but I just… didn’t. Like it was fine, but I was never really pulled in. Definitely a fun, enjoyable, easy read that had me chuckling pretty often, but it just wasn’t really what I expected. Sometimes I struggle with audiobooks, so maybe I would’ve liked it better if I’d read a physical book. I dunno.
I’m going to keep this on my list to maybe read again in the future if I’m looking for something easy!
If it's Lex Croucher, I will read it. If it's an Arthurian plot, I will read it. So when Lex Croucher wrote GWEN & ART ARE NOT IN LOVE, I was in love! A queer Arthurian plot where battles, decrees of love, banter, and humor.
Alex Singh and Sarah Ovens do an outstanding job with the narration. I could easily connect with all the characters through their voices and emotions.
Arthurian legends make me happy, but having a queer retelling done in a surprising way is what made it fun to read. I think that is why I like Croucher's writing so much because I'm always kept on my toes with something else still coming, yet the book doesn't shy away from the hard stuff. It's fluffy, romantic, honest, and gritty. It covers all the emotions. An excellent listen.
Content Warnings: (per the author's website) violence, homophobia, struggles with mental health including depression, unhealthy relationships with alcohol, parental death, parental abuse
I absolutely adored this! Gwen and Art may not be in love, but I certainly love them! This is a delightful romcom with sassy main characters that was an absolute delight to read. Do yourself a favour and indulge in this riotous tale.
I received an ARC of this audiobook by the publisher via Netgalley in an exchange for an honest review.
Lex Croucher is developing a signature style of fresh takes on historical romances with inclusive characters. Sure her books are anachronistic and unrealistic for the periods she's writing in, but it doesn't matter. They're good fun. Gwen & Art Are Not in Love is their first foray into YA Lit but off the top of my head, without going back and rereading their earlier novels, I couldn't see a massive change in writing style or subject matter.
Croucher's signature wry humor was present, with a lot of banter between all of the characters. I had a lot of fun with Gwen & Art Are Not in Love and found it much more enjoyable than Croucher's last novel, Infamous. The characters were well-rounded and their arcs felt like realistic portrayals of different ways that teens come to terms with their sexuality.
I give Gwen & Art Are Not in Love 4 out of 5 stars.
This book was ADORABLE and DELIGHTFUL!! I loved that this was a unique medieval YA retelling of King Arthur, but make it LGTBQ+. I was surprised by how funny and witty the characters were, specifically Arthur- he made me cackle! Everything about this was really sweet and it translated wonderfully as an audiobook!
