I enjoyed listening to this book. The narrator kept me interested and it occupied me during my long commutes. The podcast clips in between were well done as well!

This story was a quick read and mildly entertaining about a true crime podcaster and a social media influencer.

I was so excited for this one. I was a huge fan of Night Swim. I recommend it to everyone as one of my favorite audiobooks because of the podcast element.
This… was not that. Not in the slightest. There was no podcast. I was kinda lost for a bit. I ended up DNFing at 35%.

This can be read as a stand-alone as references to the first book are usually briefly explained.
This book was very very similar to Carol Wyer’s A Life for a Life. I rated that one about the same as this one which isn’t too shabby! So if you read and enjoyed that book you will probably enjoy this one too.
Although I mostly enjoyed it, my biggest criticism would be the unnecessary length as I felt there was a ton of filler as well as predictability. A few of the ‘twists’ weren’t twists at all to me since I spotted them a mile away and I feel most readers probably would too.

I really loved The Night Swim - it was one of my favourite books of 2023, but this one didn't resonate quite as well with me. I'm not a fan of insta-love and I didn't like Rachel as much as I did in The Night Swim. She seemed to be over-confident in her abilities and her lack of concern over her own personal safety was, well, concerning. I didn't mind the social media influencer angle, although I'm not too engaged with it myself. I'm assuming the author did a good job with illustrating the dog-eat-dog world of influencers.

I still really enjoyed this book, it just fell a little flat after how much I really liked Rachel in The Night Swim. If THIS book had THAT Rachel, it might have been closer to a 5 star read. As is, it was a solid 3.5, bumped up to 4 stars.

January LaVoy did a stellar job narrating, as usual.

Dark Corners (Rachel Krall #2) was a great read by Megan Golden. Terence Bailey is about to be released from prison for breaking and entering even though investigators have suspected him in the murders of six women. He gets a surprise visit from Maddison Logan, a young influencer with a huge social media following. Maddison ends up disappearing hours later and police suspect that she has been kidnapped or worse. The FBI hit a wall in the investigation and reluctantly ask for Rachel's help in finding Maddison. It seems as though she has no familu, no friends, and that people have not actually seen her. Rachel goes undercover to Buzzcon using a fake instagram account. It is a popular influencer conference where she discovers that fierce rivalry may have turned lethal. Rachel must confront the real dangers that lurk in the dark corners of the internet. I enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to read more by the author.

Dark Corners by Megan Goldin
August 8, 2023

First off, I loved The Night Swim, and I loved Dark Corners just as much. Rachel Krall is the perfect protagonist to carry this series and I say that with hope of more books to come.

Dark Corners is the perfect balance of true crime and thriller fiction featuring Rachel, a podcaster with a history of success. Rachel goes undercover as a micro-influencer to investigate the disappearance of Madison Logan, a social media influencer and comes across Terrence Bailey, imprisoned for murder but soon to be released. Working with the FBI to determine if he’s responsible for Madison’s disappearance, Rachel enters the world of the shallow and obtuse! Haha!

Thrilling, twisty, and a bit heart-wrenching, Dark Corners is everything I’d hoped it would be. I cannot wait to read more about Rachel (and Martinez!)

Highly recommend this one!

This is the second Rachel Krall book by Megan Goldin. As a now famous podcaster, Rachel is asked to help the FBI with a prisoner who is about to be released. The FBI suspects that he is a serial killer or at the very least involved in the death of various young women over the years. But once Rachel meets with the prisoner, another dead body is found and Rachel sets out to find out more about the killer. A well narrated story told from several POVs, keeps you gripped with twists and suspense.

I was so excited for this one. I loved Night swim. Unfortunately this one was a DNF, I stopped at 40% and I can honestly tell you I have no idea what this book is even about. There’s no “podcasting”like Night Swim and Rachel is a completely different character in this book. She isn’t even likable it’s like she’s a different character from Night Swim. Such a disappointment. I recommend Night Swim to everyone I know.

*4 stars* Thank you Netgalley for the audio arc. This was a solid follow up from Megan Goldin. The pace and characters were great. Will read from again.

This book was a solid "popcorn thriller". It didn't bamboozle me and I wish the characters had more depth, but it's definitely something I still recommend reading if you have a free weekend. I'm a sucker for multi-cast narration, and this one didn't disappoint.

Thank you NetGalley for the audio ARC. All opinions are my own.

I read Night Swim shortly before requesting this book and loved it, so I was excited that I got approved for Dark Corners! Unfortunately I feel like it fell a little flat compared to Night Swim. Still worth the read, I just wasn't as in love with it as I thought I would be.

This one was okay. I read it a while ago and forgot to review it, and sadly I just remember it being decent enough and not my fav of hers, but good!

I loved Megan’s last book, Night Swim, and thought this was a great follow up to that story. The writing once again hooked me in and kept me on the edge of my seat, and I really loved the full cast audiobook narration which was both engaging and entertaining, and added to the suspense. I loved the character development as well, and will be recommending this to all thriller lovers.

*many thanks to St Martins Press, Netgalley, and Macmillan Audio for the gifted copy for review

This one was okay! I devoured the audiobook but I felt like there we some holes in the plot and I wished there had been a. bit more character development. Thank you so much for this opportunity.

I am happy to share this book by Megan Goldin is a great follow up with the Rachel Krall character from Night Swim. This has a podcast element as, Rachel Krall is a True Crime Podcaster, and having that on the audiobook is perfection!! The other element I enjoyed id the influencer perspective and lifestyle which I found interesting.

Now for the thrill of the mystery part of the story; this book will keep you on the edge of your seat trying to figure out who is playing who. As Rachel is getting more info then the FBI or police, she has the upperhand, what she does with that info is a little on the risky side, but Hugh stakes call for the risks. Come and enjoy the brilliant mind of Rachel Krall! Megan has created a character that is gritty, knowledgeable, and willing to make the tough choices to solve a crime.

I enjoyed the character development from Night Swim until now - but it’s not necessary for you to read Night Swim first, it’s just better.

There is a little romance in this book and I didn’t mind a bit!

I highly recommend the AUDIO version narrated by André Santana, January Lavon, and Samantha Desz - it adds another level of enjoyment for you.

Dark Corners: A Novel by Megan Goldin was an enjoyable follow-up book, although it didn't quite match the exceptional quality of The Night Swim. It should be noted that The Night Swim set a very high standard. In terms of the main character, Rachel Krall, she was not as endearing and appeared excessively self-assured in herself and her skills. Frequently, she finds herself in precarious circumstances and expresses astonishment when things do not go as planned. However, despite these shortcomings, the story still had its moments of intrigue and kept me engaged.

While reading Dark Corners, I couldn't help but feel a sense of disconnection from both the story and the characters, which is quite different from my experience with the author's previous books. It was disappointing to find that none of the characters, including the main character, were likable in any way. Furthermore, the topic of influencers as a whole tends to lack the ability to evoke sympathy or admiration, even among other influencers themselves. This made me question the direction of the story, as it seemed to place too much emphasis on the influencer angle, which I found bothersome.

The ending itself was quite satisfying in the sense that everything was thoroughly explained and wrapped up neatly. However, it can be said that there were no truly groundbreaking or astonishing moments, despite the detailed explanations provided. It is worth noting that throughout the reading experience, I did not come across any significant "ah-ha" moments that would have left a lasting impression on me.

The audiobook version of this book is exceptionally well done overall. The narration, performed by a talented voice actor with a captivating voice, brings the story to life in a truly immersive way. The production quality is top-notch, with seamless transitions and well-placed sound effects that enhance the listening experience. It is evident that MacMillan Audio, a renowned company known for its commitment to quality, has once again delivered a masterpiece. With their attention to detail and dedication to providing the best listening experiences in the industry, MacMillan Audio continues to set the bar high for audiobook production.

Megan Goldin is quickly becoming one of my go-to authors. I love the podcast within a book concept, and the narration plays this out beautifully. This story has a definite "ripped from the headlines" vibe, with a pretty young influencer suddenly missing. Journalist/podcaster Rachel Krall is on the case, even though she doesn't want to be, thanks to a prison inmate with a looming release date. Taking a peek into the world that is the life of an influencer, Goldin lays the plot out for us at the perfect pace, keeping me listening well past my bedtime. Can't wait for Rachel Krall's next adventure!
