The second installment in the Rachel Krall series, Dark Corners brings the story of the disappearance of social media Influencer Maddison Logan after meeting with convicted serial killer, Terence Bailey, at the correctional facility where he is being held.
When the FBI hit a wall in their investigation they turn to Rachel for help (seriously, so unrealistic but I’ll ignore that). Rachel goes undercover at a convention for influencers where we get a glimpse of the influencer scene as Goldin sees it. I have been seeing a lot of influencers popping up in recent books and they are always written the same - shallow, vapid and so unlikeable. Talk about a stereotype. This was frustrating to see as it’s just an excuse for poorly written characters with little development. Thankfully the book had some areas to redeem itself.
Unlike the first book in the series, this one moves at a much faster pace and does not tell the story through courtroom dialogue. While it take a little to build the story and draw you in, you will get drawn in and not want to put the book down (except maybe to throw it during the Buzzcon scenes) until you’ve solved the case. Despite what I said above with how I really disliked how the Influencer conference was portrayed (no I promise I am not one I just think it is overused) the plot and story really did suck me in and I truly did enjoy this book - it was a much faster paced and more exciting read than the first in the series and I hope we see more of Rachel Krall

Reading this was like watching a good episode of Criminal Minds.
It was an addictive and hard to put down, fast-paced read. I enjoyed the way information was revealed. And I really like Rachel Krall as a main character, she's badass, smart, and always strives to do the right thing. This book has the same podcast elements that made Night Swim such a joy to listen to on audio, though you don't have to read the first book to enjoy this one. Don't be afraid to jump right in! You won't feel lost (though I loved [book:The Night Swim|51169341] so I recommend reading it too anyways UNLESS you are triggered by SA since that book heavily deals with that content).
Some negatives: The take on influencers felt dated and overdone to me. They don't feel like real people (although it could just be that I don't follow influencers like this, and maybe they are out there, idk). And the romance felt weak and forced. I didn't hate it, but it kind of came out of nowhere and I didn't feel any buildup until it happened. After that things progressed very quickly, and while no grand declarations were made it still felt a little too fast for my liking.
But otherwise, the mystery was entertaining and I enjoyed the twists and turns the story took. I found this book to be less predictable than the first in the series. I also appreciated that this book brought up both missing white girl syndrome as well as the way we often focus on the killer instead of the victims in true crime. They are both important topics in the true crime genre and ones I think we need to be more cognizant of.
Overall, while this was not *as* enjoyable for me as Night Swim, I still had a good time with it and I will definitely be picking up the next Rachel Krall book (as well as Megan Goldin's other works!).
Huge thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the early review audiobook copy :)
I have been so fortunate with the amazing books that I have read lately!
This is the second book in the Rachel Krall series. Krall is a true crime podcaster and she’s back to help the FBI search for an influencer who goes missing after visiting a suspected serial killer.
I loved the fact that the story takes place at a social media influencer conference. The twists and connections were very well done. The story alternates between the story and episodes of Krall’s podcast. I listened to it and felt the podcast was done PERFECTLY. When the music that introduced the podcast would start, I got so excited because the podcast felt so real!! I thoroughly enjoyed this and didn’t want it to end!
Let me start by saying I WILL NEVER IN MY LIFE USE UBER OR LIFT especially after this lol (I never have yet and unless it’s my LAST resort I will never!)
The is book 2 in the Rachel Krall stories by Megan Goldin (more like a semi sequel it follows the same character.) I love THE NIGHT SWIM and was excited for Rachel’s story to continue, but this newest one just fell flat for me.
What worked:
I enjoyed the twist.
MC.
The influencer plot.
I love pairing my books with the audio and crazy enough I was approved for the @netgalley audio book before BOTM announced their July picks and when I saw this was an option it was perfect and meant to be!
What I really enjoyed with the audio book especially was the pod cast portions! But even that was a bummer because they were barely focus on in this book.
What didn’t:
Too much was going on. The pacing of it all made it hard to follow. The beginning had a great start but then you wait forrrrrrever for the twist which is tough for a thriller. I also felt like it wasn’t really explained WHY the villain did what they did and I don’t like things like that left out. The romance felt randomly added. And there was a lot of repeat lines that made think “didn’t I just read that line a few sentence ago?” Almost as if the author forgot they previously used that line and almost word for word copy and pasted it a few sentence later. It got very annoying.
Despite how this review sounds I will definitely still continue this if the author continues Rachel’s story! Rachel is a fun relatable character and I’m a sucker for a good podcast tie in!
(I do recommend reading THE NIGHT SWIM first but you definitely don’t have to for DARK CORNERS to make sense)
Thank you @netgalley for my arc of the audio book for this! The performance and immersive-ness was perfection!
I absolutely loved The Night Swim, so I couldn't wait to get more of Rachel Krall and her podcast. I had high expectations for this book that....weren't *quite* met.
I still enjoyed it, don't get me wrong. It just didn't have quite the same draw as Night Swim did, and Rachel wasn't quite as enjoyable this time around. Her decisions seemed a little off in a few cases.
However, I liked the little bit of romance, I liked knowing part of the plot and trying to figure out how it all connected, and I liked the twist at the end. It was a good one and I did not guess it at all.
Joe was a fun addition as well. I don't fully get why he made some of the choices he did, but he was fun to read about.
Didn't love the whole influencer focus because I'm just not that interested in them, but I did like the depiction of the toxicity and self importance of them all.
Overall, a bit of a letdown after Night Swim, but still a quick and entertaining read. Plus these books were made for audio, I'm glad I consumed this one in that manner.
I really enjoyed this one! I thought including the perspective of the killer was very unique! I enjoyed the fact that this book felt like a stand-alone even though it is in a series. I will definitely be looking out for a third book in the series!
First of all, I have to say that the format of these books - with the podcast sections going throughout and then the sections where Rachel is doing her investigations and then parts where you get to see firsthand what is happening makes the pacing for these books great. I love the way that information is doled out and it keeps my interest throughout.
I listened to the audio of these books and the narrator does a great job and the podcast format lends itself great to the way these books are written.
In this installment of Rachel Krall, our intrepid podcaster finds herself within the mystery she’s investigating. I liked the addition of the FBI investigator and I hope he stays around in later books. This story takes us into the world of online influencers and some unsavory aspects of law enforcement. I found the overall story engaging though I did like the first book in the series a bit better.
Thank you to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for an advance listening copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Megan Goldin is becoming one of my favorite authors! I requested an advanced copy of Dark Corners knowing nothing more about it than the fact it was written by Goldin. Since I went into reading it blind - I was so surprised to find that podcaster Rachel Krall from The Night Swim is back. I was reading and kept thinking - something seems so familiar to me about this girl. I loved The Night Swim - it has been a while since I read it so I really didn't remember much other than Rachel and a courtroom setting. This time Rachel is assisting an FBI agent in a case. So you could absolutely read Dark Corners if you haven't read The Night Swim. But I encourage you to read BOTH - because they are both so good! This book caught my attention right away and kept me engaged throughout - it got really good toward the end. I do seem to enjoy books that have a podcast element to them. This one also gave a glimpse into the world of influencers as well. The audiobook is narrated by one of my favorite narrators January Lavoy - as well as Samantha Desz who also narrated in The night swim. There is a third narrator in this book - André Santana. The three together did an amazing job. I also loved in the audiobook the parts where it goes to the podcast - the sound elements for those parts are just an added touch I loved making you think your listening to a podcast. Thank you so much Macmillan audio for my advanced copy of this amazing audiobook! Audiobooks are fast becoming my favorite way of reading and you just always seem to have such good ones!
Thank you to NetGalley for the advance audiobook.
I was looking forward to this book because I really enjoyed the Night Swim. I must say I was a little bored with this one. Overall, this book was just average.. As for the audio it was great.
I really enjoyed this book and thought it was different from previous mystery books I've read. It didn't include the gore that many mystery books do which I appreciate as I have a hard time reading those. I didn't read the first book but everything made sense. The only thing I didn't love was there were a lot of names mentioned and it was hard to keep track of everyone. Otherwise it was fast paced and different from any mysteries I've read so far!

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this thriller! I have previously listened to her first Rachel Krall book and it was fun to see what was next for this character in this one. Although it does make a few references to the first book, book 1 and 2 can definitely stand alone. This book is fast-paced and took no time at all to be sucked into it. Definitely one to read! Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for the arc!
Rachel Krall is back again! Dark Corners is a crime fiction thriller set in Florida. The audiobook is interestingly formatted - multiple narrators, background music, etc. Those extra features made it a bit more realistic. The pace felt pretty slow until the last hour. That being said, the story was intriguing and it was hard to put down. I liked the additional drama that came with the influencers. Nice twists and turns. I recommend!
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for providing an advanced reader copy of the book for an honest review. Any quote(s) used in my review have been uncorrected.
Rachel Krall is back in another crime novel. This time there are lots of social media influencers and an inmate about to be released from prison. The FBI calls Rachel when the inmate’s last visitor, a #vanlife influencer, goes missing. Rachel’s name came up during their conversation, so the FBI offers Rachel exclusive access to the case if she talks to the inmate. Of course, Rachel becomes involved in the case as more than just a reporter, she may turn into a victim. Readers get insight into many characters through third person perspective changes. Rachel is the main perspective, but readers also see an FBI agent and a shady ride-share driver. The cast of narrators is great; one narrator reads most of the story and the other two read for the special report podcast episodes. The special reports also have music and sound effects that differentiate them from the rest of the book. The story is very convoluted, but all of the pieces do tie together at the end. This can also be read as a standalone novel; readers do not need to read the first Rachel Krall book to understand this one. Ultimately, mystery readers should try this one, and the audio is a great choice for experiencing this book.
I really enjoyed The Night Swim and went into this with pretty high expectations.
This was not what I hoped for.
The plot was not nearly as enticing and the characters were kind of detestable.
It just didn't have the same pull as the first book.
Also who the Fudge dyes their hair in a camp ground? Seriously WTF?!
Not only is it absolutely ridiculous, but abhorrent behaviour.
If you are going into this, I would suggest the audio, it was a lot smoother for the podcast transitions.
Thanks to NetGalley, Macmillan Audio & St. Martin's Press for my DRCs.
Wow, wow, wow! Dark Corners was the perfect sequel to The Night Swim. I listened to the audiobook version of this book, and let me tell you, it didn't disappoint. The narrators did a fantastic job in the story-telling. I couldn't stop listening! Perfection is exactly what we've come to expect from Megan Goldin and we got it. 5 huge stars!
I vacillated between audio and digital on this one. For my last book, the narrator made appreciation of the book a challenge so I was extra aware that this narrator did a great job with intonation and differentiation of characters. There were references to the podcaster/main character having a sultry voice and the narrator did. It didn’t always fit what I envisioned and sometimes was slower than i would have liked. In terms of the story,
+ I love a good podcast incorporated into a book
+ excerpts from the podcast along with music were fun to break things up and move the plot along
+ the setting of the influencer conference was unique, fun, interesting, and informative!
+ the characters were, on a whole, likable
- typically not a fan of detectives as book leads
- without giving a spoiler, there was one big gap in wrapping up the storyline and connecting characters. Maybe it was addressed so briefly that I missed it???
Ultimately, I enjoyed this more than I expected. I rated it 3 stars when I have given other books by the same author 4 but I think that’s a me thing and not a her thing; the bar has been raised.
This book was a nail biter! I was continually guessing but I never suspected the ending! I haven't read anything from this author before but I am pleasantly surprised!
I actually really enjoy this audiobook. I am a sucker for a thriller with a podcast in it and when we aren’t really following the POV of a detective mostly because I find it incredibly boring but I did enjoy our time with this cop even though Rachel was by far the most interesting person to follow. She did have this “not like other girls” attitude around other influencers which was a bit irritating but was also realistic and genuine to her character so it didn’t stall my enjoyment.
This book was the second book in the Rachel Krall series but you definitely don’t need to read the first book (Night Swim) to enjoy it. I actually have Night Swim & I haven’t read it yet.
I really liked how the set up went from podcast to present day. You’ll definitely love this one if you’re into true crime & feeling like you could always be the one to figure out the mystery before law enforcement.
Filled with influencers, murdered & missing women, & a prison inmate who is about to get out that’s believed to be responsible for it all. What could go wrong?
Another great thriller from Megan Goldin. When true crime Podcaster Rachel Krall gets pulled into an active missing person's case by the FBI. They may have unwittingly put Rachel in the target sight of a potential serial killer that is set to be released from prison in days. Rachel uses this to re-look at these killing and find the truth.
I enjoyed the new characters introduced in
this book and the influencer conference Rachel ends up attending to stay in the area where the case is unfolding. Great social commentary on the fake news of much of what is seen in social media.
Thank you to NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for an advanced audiobook for review.
