I enjoyed this book much more that the first Rachel Krall book. It does not need to be read in order, it can be read as a standalone. I am not a fan of books with podcasts, but I did enjoy this one. The social media influencers gave it an entertaining feel. The twist at the end of it bring everything together. Did I see it coming, yes, but it was written in a way that I did not mind that.
The narrator did a great job, especially transferring between the book and the podcast. This made listening to the audio book much more enjoyable.
I want to thank Netgalley, St. Martin's Press, and Macmillan Audio for an ARC, and advanced listening copy of this book.
Dark Corners by Megan Goldin was one that I could not get into. I had to DNF even though I do not like to do that with an ARC. Perhaps I had to read The Night Swim to appreciate this one? But as the first book that I ever read by Megan Goldin this was not for me. I may get back to it later but as for right now its a pass for me.
I had the same trouble with this book as I did with the first one in the series. There was also a lot going on in this one and it felt a little watered down. It also made me feel a disconnect from the story and the characters. all that aside, the pacing is fast and there are a lot of little tricks thrown in along the way to distract the reader, which i thought was fun.
This had me on the edge of my seat the whole time! I could never guess the plot twist that was coming and the amount of times that my jaw was on the floor! So good!!
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book early! I read Night Swim and was excited to hear that it was a series! In this second book, Rachel is flow to Florida by the FBI because they want her to interview a prisoner about a missing woman. Rachel attends a famous event to try and investigate the case of the missing woman.
Overall, I feel that Dark Corners kind of filled the role of "sophomore slump" for me. I really loved the court room drama scenes from the first book in the series and was hoping for more of that in this book. The pacing of the book was fast, and there are definitely quite a few unexpected twists and turns thrown in - but overall it felt predictable to me. 3.5 stars for me on this one

Dark Corners is the second book in the Rachel Krall series by Megan Goldin. I have not read the previous book (yet) and I found this one easy to read as a standalone mystery. This book was so scary good that I could not put it down! I can’t wait for the next book (fingers crossed it releases soon!)
I loved the narration by André Santana, January LaVoy, & Samantha Desz.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Thanks, NetGalley, Macmillan Audio, and St. Martin's Press, for the Digital Review Copy and Advanced Listening Copy.
“Rachel Krall, the true crime podcaster star of Megan Goldin’s acclaimed Night Swim, returns to search for a popular social media influencer who disappeared after visiting a suspected serial killer.” (GoodReads)
This was a decent thriller, but I wasn’t compelled to read it, didn’t connect to any of the characters, and I was a little confused by the ending. The audio performance was good, with Desz delivering the third-person narrative and LaVoy delivering Rachel's podcasts.
I enjoyed this story but not as much as book 1. You know pretty early on who the bad guy is, whereas I prefer got the reveal to happen much later.
The audio production was fantastic, one of the best I have listened to, especially with the podcast elements. They were so realistic
I’m always a Megan Goldin fan. I loved being back with Rachel Krall. The Night Swim is a favorite of mine so I was happy to feel almost like this was a follow up. But it definitely had its own totally different vibe. I think the influencer aspect was also a really interesting take. It almost read like an episode of CSI or Law and Order. I was surprised with how everything tied together in the end. Would definitely recommend!
I really enjoyed this book and am so thankful to have an early copy! It lived up to the hype after the night swim! Thank you so much to netgalley for this advanced readers copy!
This was my first book to read by this author but it won't be my last! This was a beautifully written novel that evokes so many emotions and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Don't miss out on this one!
I unfortunately wrote no spoilers for Dark Corners, so I don't remember as much as I should. If anyone took notes and wants to write a guest blog post, please let me know 😅
I am thrilled that Megan Goldin decided to turn The Night Swim into a series. While I did prefer the first book, Dark Corners is fast-paced with plenty of twists to keep the reader interested. There are a lot of different threads, but the ending pulls everything together well and I was satisfied by the reveal. I enjoy books with podcast and influencer elements, so this was a fun read.
The audiobook production was great. I was hoping for a bit more of a podcast element like Book 1, but January LaVoy is a favorite narrator and nails the performance every time.
I really struggled with this audiobook and I think a large part was the narrator. Nothing particular wrong, but the voice was maybe too calming for a suspense/thriller and my attention often drifted while trying to listen. As such, I'm sure there are parts of the story that I ended up missing because my attention drifted that I otherwise would have caught if I was reading the print version.
Not as good as her others I've read but definitely worth reading. Thanks for the opportunity.
I do recommend it.
I am now a Megan Goldin fan. I didn’t enjoy Stay Awake by her but I think that was because of the groundhog day trope. I love any story that involves a Podcasts, and I prefer to listen to the audiobook. I thought this book was fast paced. I enjoyed the plot, and I couldn’t stop thinking about how it was going to end. I hope Megan Golden gives us more stories with Rachael and her true crime podcast.
Fast paced and entertaining. A recommended purchase for collections where crime and thrillers are popular.
I LOVED this book!! I am kind of obsessed with books including podcasts and this one was amazing!!! I really loved how Megan added the insane world of social media to this book... it was so good. and the twist was even more crazy!! I think Megan Goldin is becoming one of my favorite thriller authors. I cant wait to read more from her !!
Megan Goldin’s Rachel Krall Series has had me on the edge of my seat and I can’t get enough!
In this latest installment, Dark Corners, Rachel gets pulled into an FBI investigation into a potential serial killer. Can she solve the case before anyone else gets killed...or she becomes a target?
I love the format of the books with bits of podcast woven in to give you more pieces of information and background on the case and suspects.
I'm not going to tell you anything more about the story itself because you need to watch it all unfold on the page to get the full effect, but I will say you're not going to want to miss this one.
I switched between the physical book and the audiobook, which was narrated by André Santana, January LaVoy, and Samantha Desz. They did such a great job with it, and I found it hard to stop listening. The audio comes in at 10 hours and 45 minutes.
Megan Goldin's new book, Dark Corners, is the second in a series of books featuring crime-solving podcaster Rachel Krall. This one combined the elements of a detective novel and a window into the new world of influencers- individuals who make their livelihood as bloggers and social media presences.
The plot is simple enough. A semi-famous influencer has gone missing and a key suspect is an individual who is in prison, but soon to be released. Rachel knows neither the missing influencer nor the inmate, but the FBI thinks she may and asks her to help them find her - if the influencer is still alive.
Although somewhat formulaic, I nonetheless found the book entertaining. The narration was excellent and unique when the podcaster, herself, introduced her podcast. Very suspenseful and tense to the finish!
Rachel Krall is back, and I couldn't be more happy with it! This is how you do a podcast based thriller the right way. I loved that we get Rachel in her personal life and how she's interacting with the world along with how she navigates her work life - AND - we get how they intersect. This thriller dives into the dark corners of social media, and how the lives of influencers are formed. The book shows how false the persona can be in that life. That glitz and glamour are contrasted with the dark corners of humanity and the fringes of society, those people who are rejected and ignored. I LOVED what Megan Goldin did with this stark reality of each side of things. The multimedia elements and the twists, turns, and connections were sublime. I don't want to spoil anything, but I will say that this one was incredibly convoluted and well done. Loved it!
The narration of this audiobook was next level amazing. From sea birds in the background to the sounds of a car peeling out, I was enthralled by the little additions that added to the vibe. Being able to listen to the intro sections of Rachel's podcast in the audiobook was incredible. I felt like this entire book was a true crime podcast, and I was hooked from the first moment.
