Thank you MacMillan Audio, Megan Goldin, and Netgalley for this audio in exchange of an honest review. I am so glad she did another Rachel Krall book! I first listened (and reviewed) to the Night Swim which first introduced Rachel Krall. Just like the first book, she had little snippets of Rachel’s podcast throughout the story which I absolutely loved! She had a total of 3 narrators in which this book has the same 2 narrators. There was a different one in the first book but the other 2 narrators were the same however I did not notice the change. Definite must read/listen for 2023. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 strong stars!
4.5 stars. Dark Corners is the second book featuring the investigative podcaster Rachel Krall from Night Swim. Still, it can function as a standalone. In this book, Rachel is tasked with investigating the disappearance of Maddison Logan, a social media influencer, who was last seen visiting a prison inmate. Told through multiple POVs, this fast paced thriller will have you guessing until the very end. Sometimes the scariest monster is the one hiding in plain sight… for fans of audiobooks, I’d recommend listening, as it has sound components of a podcast that couldn’t be replicated on the page
In general, this was solid -- the brief sections from the killer's perspective were handled well. However, the scorn for influencer culture felt a bit over the top. I mean, we get it: they are shallow.

I did not realize Rachel Krull was also in her past book until the other reviews pointed it out. but I loved her last book, so I knew I would love this one too. Rachel Krull is looking into the disappearance of Madison Logan. Meanwhile, they are also looking into the murders of prostitutes in the past. I love the break in segments by Rachel. This book had some good suspense and kept my attention. Shocker on the end about Madison and Hailey! Highly recommended. Especially if you liked Rachel Krull in her previous book.
Rachel Krall, our favorite podcaster, is back! Rachel receives a call from the FBI and heads to Florida to help with a case where a woman went missing after mentioning Rachel to an inmate in prison who is set to be released. Oh, and the inmate is a suspected serial killer.
This was a well-paced, well-narrated audiobook. The book itself was interesting and kept my interest. I definitely recommend this one.
I LOVED this book! I started reading this one as an ebook and then the audio became available so I switch and I’m SO glad I did. I HIGHLY recommend the audio version of this book. If you read THE NIGHT SWIM by Megan Goldin then you’ll already know our main character Rachel - she hosts a podcast talking about current cases. The podcast aspect gets a little lost in the ebook/physical book but the audio is fantastic! I really enjoyed this book. I’m a sucker for a podcast trope and think it makes for such an interesting read. You do not have to read THE NIGHT SWIM first before this one, although you’ll have a background of the main character.
I love how this story not only follows a podcast but also influencers. It made for a very interesting read and I still didn’t see the end coming.
I cannot get enough of Rachel Krall, the character at the center of The Night Swim and now Dark Corners. She is a tough as nails MC who always carries her own against her male law enforcement/FBI counterparts. While she is not in fact a detective, these books feel very much like a detective series in nature. I was enthralled as the case took many different twists and turns, and Rachel became the target herself. I never knew what to expect from moment to moment and could not put the book down. Literally.
The influencer life as a subplot is always fun to read and I love the way Goldin uses it here. The behind-the-scenes aspect of the convention added both to the story, and to the series, as Rachel is in fact an influencer herself. And the FBI agent in charge of the case? This was a subplot I did not know I wanted and it was perfection. I hope we have not seen the last of Joe Martinez, nor Rachel.
Dark Corners is formatted into a true podcast format during certain sections (complete with intro music if you listen to the audiobook), which gets lost on the printed page. Further, these sections do not really make sense, nor seem to fit, until you understand they are in fact, part of her podcast. I would recommend reading this book either as an immersive read, using both the physical/ebook and the audiobook or just listening to the audiobook.
Read if you like:
•podcast style books
•strong MCs
•romantic suspense
•serial killer plot lines
•the influencer life
Thank you {partners} St. Martin’s Press and Macmillan Audio for my gifted copies.
While the first book., The Night Swim, held my attention and kept me enthralled the entire time, I struggled to push through this one. There were so many characters and different directions things were going that it took me way too long to actually have a clear grasp of what was going and and by the time I did, I didn't have much incentive to care about the characters.
I feel like this story could have been just as effective if it were half the length that it is.
I listened to the audio version and I definitely appreciate the podcast segments (just like The Night Swim) and the narrators did a fantastic job. I'm not sure I would have finished had I been reading a physical copy.
I'll still read whatever Megan Goldin writes next, but hope this is the end of this series and that she writes more standalones!
Thanks so much to St. Martin's Press and Macmillan Audio for the ARC/ALC.
This book will be available for purchase on Aug 8th.
Dark Corners by Megan Goldin is book 2 in the Rachel Krall series. I absolutely loved The Night Swim which was book 1 so I desperately requested an advanced copy of this book. It did not disappoint. I really enjoyed this book because of the well-developed sequencing, hot and cold trails as well as the relevant subject matter, and intrigue. I hope there is a book 3. The audio was crisp and the narrator was perfect. I especially liked that the environmental background noise (i.e. grass crunching underfoot) because it added an eerie feeling to the listening experience.
I received a review copy of this book from the author/publisher through NetGalley for my honest review. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
Influencers, ride-shares, Murder, secret societies, serial killers, podcasts- what didn’t this book have?
I loved Night Swim and book two did not disappoint. Rachel Krall is back and better than before.
As I did before, I absolutely loved the podcast style. I got to listen to this in addition to reading the physical copy and there were moments literally felt like I was listening to a real true crime series.
I will say that the ending was a little abrupt and I could have used some more, but hopefully this means that we’ll get more of Rachel in the future.
True crime podcaster, Rachel Krall is basing her latest show on a social media influence who went missing after visiting a presumed serial killer. With Maddison Logan missing and Terrence Bailey about to be released after serving time for a B and E, the FBI has run out of ideas and they turn to Rachel for help. For her part, Rachel is having a hard time finding any sign of Maddison before her disappearance. She was hugely popular on Instagram, but Rachel can find few, if any people who have actually ever seen her. A look inside the world of social media influencers has Rachel wondering if one of Maddison’s competitors might be involved in her disappearance. Or does Bailey have a partner? Someone on the outside? Goldin pens another chilling thriller
What a ride! Megan Goldin never disappoints, and I was so glad to hear she was bringing back Rachel from The Night Swim! You can definitely read this one as a stand-alone novel, and, in fact, I think I liked this one better than Night Swim because, duh, serial killer!! I found the podcast/influencer angle less annoying than the usual thriller that has those elements in it.
You have to do this one on audio for the podcast chapters!
Thank you to Macmillan Audio, NetGalley, and St. Martin's Press for a copy of the audio in exchange for my honest review.
Excellent story that kept me engaged, I liked that there were multiple narrators. This is the second book in the series but can be read/listened to as a stand-alone. I would suggest the audio because it will give you all the feels. You get just enough to keep you guessing, with a few twists throughout the book and it all ties together in the end.
4 Star!
It’s ironic that this audiobook should come up two days after I finished reading Dark Corners. So even though I read it and loved it I decided why not listen to it anyway? I figured maybe I might think differently of the story since I know how it ends. My longer review is on the book version but I can say that I really like this book and at this point I’ll read anything the author writes. I also always appreciate multiple narrators in an audiobook. The narration is perfect.
AHHHHH! YES! this is the perfect sequel and I am living for an opportunity to read and review it before this baby hits shelves on August 8, 2023. Plus, the gorgeous-as-ever January LeVoy narrating this masterpiece? UGH, sign me up. I am so thankful to Macmillan Audio, Megan Goldin, NetGalley, and St. Martin's Press for the accommodations.
