This book is the best of all the nine book series. Never before subjects that should have been introduced in the early books were missing....until now. Police chases, ,police body cameras, clearing the carpet of every single body camera of police officers encapsulating nine city blocks, how to escape? Well, just a shoot a police officer to ensure the police are saved from Orphan X's nemesis. Yes, a nemesis-finally! Orphan X was a one man show for far too long. All the subplots are what made this book the standout finale of all them all. The finale??? Umm, I don't really think so, especially when you think your friends are well, your friends....how well do we really know anyone??

Lone Wolf is the latest action packed Orphan X thriller and is best read as part of the series. Nowhere Man, Evan Smoak answers his roam zone phone ready to leap to action to help someone in need. The caller is his newly found niece whose dog is missing. Feeling like the case is below his skill level and slightly guilt tripped into searching for the missing dog, Evan finds a dead body and plunges headlong into a case of billionaire geniuses and takes on a fellow master assassin. Full of action and blindsiding twists, Orphan X once again wades into a blood soaked adventure to save the innocent and a homely little dog. The action cannot be beat and Evan and Joey will always be some of my favorites for a not to be missed installment of Orphan X. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from NetGalley.

This series is an addiction. A serious addiction. I hope this series never ends. LONE WOLF is another dose of absolute perfection. It is fast-paced, perfectly plotted, absorbing, fascinating, exciting, hilarious, and oh yeah, it will give you all the feels. On this mission, Orphan X contends not just with a rival world-class assassin but with the messy, disorganized, cloying burden of connection, attachment, and human emotion. Evan shows huge growth in this book. I felt he took bigger emotional leaps in this book than in any of the others before this and it was heart-wrenching, heart-warming, fascinating, and gratifying to read. The supporting cast of characters are, as always, perfectly, lovingly, and authentically drawn. Joey is magnificent and I love the rapport between her and Evan. It is superbly written. Two major supporting characters do not appear in this book--not because anything has happened to them but because they're on vacation. At first, I thought I'd be disappointed and miss them, but the book was every bit as satisfying as all the others that came before. The only issue I had with this book is that it had to end eventually. I could have gone the rest of my life just reading this book and been endlessly satisfied. It hits every note. It has everything. Pulse-pounding, nail-biting, gasp-worthy action that only Orphan X can provide. Emotional depth; heart; and a host of thought-provoking conundrums that manifest both in Evan's personal life and in the world at large. Also, this book made me laugh out loud several times. Hurwitz gives a masterclass in how to write the perfect book. Not just the perfect thriller but the perfect book. As with all the others in this series, I'll be reading this one more than once. The ending is a gut-punch though, and it will naturally have you salivating for the next installment. Hurwitz and Orphan X never disappoint. This is the best Orphan book yet! Oh, and Evan's new ringtone is everything!!!!

Orphan X is back! I really enjoyed this novel and the continued growth of Evan is a joy. I also thought the “Villain” was easily one of the most terrifying you’ll see in thriller novels and it’s very topical in today’s environment. The cliffhanger was great and I only regret having to wait another year to read it.

Thanks to NetGalley for providing a preview of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. This is another fantastic entry in the excellent Orphan X series. This time around, Evan’s initial benign mission to find a little girl’s missing dog leads to him stumbling upon the assassination of a scientist, and near-assassination of his daughter. Through some help from old friends (and non-friends) from previous installments, Evan becomes aware of a dangerous conspiracy involving big tech running amuck. This leads to the familiar mix of suspense, action, humor, and moments of humanity that have defined the series. An epilogue also provides quite the cliffhanger for Evan’s next adventure, which will be an automatic must-read!

Orphan X aka Evan Smoak is becoming more human or experiencing more human emotions. He's starting to truly care about others and their feelings and it's scaring him. In this edition he is tasked with finding his niece's dog, but she doesn't know he's her uncle, in the process he discovers a dead scientist and ends up protecting that man's daughter from a hired assassin who is trained as well as he was in the Orphan Program. There are several scenes with Joey and Dog in them, if you've read previous books you will recognize these characters. Plenty of intrigue, action, staying one step ahead of the assassin and the law, lots of Joey and Evan banter, and more of Evan recognizing the feelings of others and trying to empathize with them. Orphan X, The Nowhere Man, Evan Smoak, whatever you want to call him, I love all the books about this character and could see his character in a movie or made for TV series. Very well done.

This one was great! The first 200 pages flew by with so much going on. He had an adversary worth writing about and a couple shockers in there too. One of the better Orphan X books! Can’t wait for the next one.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the DRC.

Gregg Hurwitz and the Orphan X series is something that my husband and I enjoy reading together. When we were able to get this ARC from NetGalley we had to play rock, paper, scissors to see who got to read this first. So, like usual, this review is our joint effort. Thank you go Minotaur Books, Netgalley and Gregg Hurwitz for this opportunity. The following is the best attempt at not giving anything away. Because if you haven't read every single one of the Orphan X books, do not start here - and if you have - you don't need any spoilers - it simply wouldn't be fair.

First of all, we felt like the descriptions of basically everything was so much more colorful and we highlighted several words throughout the book. Words that we had never seen used in these situations, but totally fit. (ex. human flotsam, anthropomorphic, coterie etc. ) Readers get to know each character better and better with every addition to the series.

Without giving too much away, two main characters that we have totally grown attached to are missing - Evan is becoming more human and learning to deal with his emotions which is a heck of a curve ball that is being thrown at him - he may make a new frenemy from a previous mission - Joey never disappoints (and yes we have girls this age and she is totally relatable) - there is an unexpected love interest - and a major stab in the back.

Ahhhhh.. Ok we will have to find a book club or something to discuss of these things with because I could go on for days!!

Another great one in the series! It kept me up at night flipping pages and wanting to know the end without wanting it to end.

Lone Wolf is another winning effort by Hurwitz. I was glued to the couch, turning pages long past my bedtime. I missed Mia Hall but the twist at the end made my jaw drop!

Lone Wolf is the ninth book in the fantastic Orphan X series from Gregg Hurwitz.

"Evan starts off searching for a dog but stumbles onto a murder. The killer escapes but comes after the daughter of the victim. Evan finds himself pitted against an assassin that's as deadly as an Orphan. Matched skill for skill, Evan must outwit an opponent that will stop at nothing if he is to survive."

How does Hurwitz do it? How does he keep finding situations where Evan can use his special skillset while also allowing the character to grow and change. There's an Orphan X escape scene that is just insane. And Hurwitz writes it where you can see and hear it and feel it. There's a lot of commentary (as part of the story) about AI and the effect of screens on a generation. Hurwitz makes some interesting comments but never gets preachy.
Joey has some interesting developments at her school (Sorority pledge?!?) She and Evan seem to continue to make each other better.

Another great Orphan X story from Hurwitz

Lone Wolf is the another installment of the Nowhere series by Gregg Hurwitz. It follows the life of an ex government assassin on the run from the US Intelligence community, who as the Nowhere Man is trying to make-up for his past. He helps random people who are need of his expert skills. As always, Hurwitz introduces us the all the latest technology and weaponry but as the series continues he shows us the Nowhere Man encountering and developing human relationships and feelings he never had as a poor orphan growing up. This a quick read with plenty of action and lots of twists and turns. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed are completely my own.

I received a free ARC ebook of Lone Wolf in exchange for an unbiased review.

Hurwitz's latest Orphan X ride ventures into the strange new world of artificial intelligence. X, aka Evan Smoak, is feeling uncomfortably emotional. An unexpected and brief visit to his biological father produces unpleasant thoughts about his own humanity and a plea from the daughter of his newly found half brother makes him very uncomfortable. But what should be a mundane task, finding the girl's dog, turns into the beginning of a terrifying mission. Evan is determined to do what's right but all the physical assaults on his own body means he is feeling the pain.

For anyone following the news about manipulation of video using artificial intelligence, this novel is sure to terrify.

Once again, Evan continues to grow into his own humanity. He's still unsettled by the concept of growing close to people who need him and whom he might need to be happy.

Thank you to the publisher and author for the ARC.

The latest Nowhere Man novel is another home run. What sets this series apart from the other super operator series is that apart from his extraordinary skills and how he deploys them, he is in constant battle with his barely alive human side. However, as time goes along, that human side is becoming more and more prominent. This novel also tackles an issue that has been dominating the headlines, which is the hyper-rapid onslaught of AI into our lives. There is some exploration of how this advanced tech could be killing what makes us human, which I also found interesting. Lastly, the ending sets up an epic, perhaps somewhat tragic view into what is coming up for Orphan X. 5-Stars all the way!!!!

Take the most highly trained assassin ever created and place him in the middle of a reality bending situation calling on him to match skills against a ruthless adversary, all on account of a lost dog. In the hands of any other author this would be the beginning of a great farce, but with Hurwitz it spells the best in this long line of novels fetch the Nowhere Man. Our hero Evan is thrown in over his head because of the one glaring lack in his training, how to deal with emotions. He's caught between his biological father, his half-brother, the alcoholic, his young niece and a ward who surprisingly is pledging a sorority. Evan is over his head because he's never been particularly good at navigating feelings and emotions. These books continue to get better with every new edition, we find the perfect killer becoming a decent man, and it's not as simple as it might seem. The ensemble cast of characters is better than ever, friends, enemies and valued confidantes are highlighted in his search for a killer almost as skilled as himself but with no moral compass. All in the search for an ugly stray dog. Like an onion we peel back the layers of the task before our intrepid hero, for which he's woefully unprepared. His training never covered these emotional upheavals but Evan slogs through determined to right all the wrongs he encounters. Seeing these larger than life characters laid low by human frailties is refreshing, the cost of having family is being open to heartache and it's good to see how Evan and the others deal with these seemingly insurmountable obstacles. The greatest crisis stems from the largest real world threat; AI. Listening to how we are being cataloged and enslaved by artificial intelligence is truly frightening and more spot on than I'd like to admit. I only hope that we have a real world Orphan X covering our backs. I can't wait for the next book in this series, the teasers get better as we progress. The only people we didn't get to catch up with are Peter and Mia but I'm hopeful they will return since they've been absent the last couple of novels. Like a superb meal these books don't last long enough and it's no time at all before you're ready to consume more. Just keep cooking like this and we'll all push away from the table satisfied.

I really liked the timely mystery of the AI billionaires involved in this mystery and the way that Evan was drawn into their circle through a simple missing dog while he was trying to be the human that Jack always wanted him to be; unfortunately, I find that I don't really like angsty Evan very much. I am a fan of this series and have always liked the dichotomy of Evan as Orphan X balancing his assassin side with his human side and love the little family that he's built himself with Joey and Mia and Tommy, but I don't like how that is now interfering with the Orphan side so much in this book. Also, if we were going to have him interacting with a female assassin, it would've been more fun if it were Candy. I did still enjoy this read, just not as much as I hoped, but I loved the surprise setup for the next book at the end. Thank you to St. Martin's Press, Minotaur Books, and NetGalley for the early read in exchange for my honest opinion.

This book was another hit by the author in the continuation of this series. The storyline was packed with much mystery and suspense. In addition, a twist at the end leading to the next book in this series. This is a book which I would recommend to others.

Gregg Hurwitz puts Orphan X through an emotional wringer that genuinely shakes the usually unflappable protagonist to his core. Just when we think Evan Smoak has been through it all, Hurwitz rains supreme chaos over the brief tranquility that is scarcely associated with Smoak.

What starts off as a very banal mission for Orphan X, locating a runaway dog for his stepbrother’s daughter, explodes into a whole different dimension when he’s caught in the crossfire of a sinisterly femme fatale working down her hit list. Putting his maxims in perspective, he doesn’t really need the victim to ask for his help, he steps in regardless, just as a good man would. But this all comes in the midst of an unraveling revelation and experience for Smoak that knocks him off his game. Can he recover fast enough to take down an Orphan-level threat?

Lone Wolf is another notch in Evan Smoak’s character development, this time as he struggles with his newfound family. The narrative serves as somewhat of re-awakening of Orphan X as he does a timely evaluation of why he really does what he does. Gregg Hurwitz balances strong drama with just as strong action propelling the turn of events at high speed with brutal car chases and swift violence. Hurwitz also pairs up the fast-paced narrative with well-timed subtle humor and some rays of positivity that wonderfully lighten the mood at times when it’s beginning to get super grim.

Just when you’ll reach the last page, exhilarated by the knuckle-busting action, Hurwitz introduces a delightfully clever cliffhanger as Hurwitz takes a huge gamble by pinning a fan-favorite character in Evan’s crosshairs. While the Orphan X books are wonderfully unpredictable, this twist takes the cake for the best and most distressing one yet. Even with the surplus of thrillers out next year, you can’t miss out on Lone Wolf. It’s a non-stop thrill ride and a powerful step in the right direction for Evan Smoak’s journey.

I have been binging the Orphan X series since I read the first book in March and I was really excited when I was approved for an ARC for the latest chapter.

The characters are my favorite part of the Orphan X series and interplay between Evan, the 9 fingered gunsmith, Joey and dog are so well done. Evan's constant attempt to avoid his annoying HOA neighbors is hilarious. We dont get too much progress in Evan's relationship with Mia and Peter but we do get a lot of focus on his newly found half brother and that leads Evan down some dark paths.

There are several antagonists in this book and Evan has to make some morally ambiguous choices about how to deal with them. Evan's constant battle with making the right choice in these situations is one of my favorite parts of the series and it was especially prominant in Lone Wolf.

This has quickly become a favorite series and I am sad that I am all caught up and now have a 6 month wait for book 10.
