Tee O'Fallon's K-9 Special Ops series is just ticking off all of my boxes. Hunky heroes committed to finding justice? Check. Kickbutt heroines who don't let those heroes get away with *anything*? You got it. The very bestest working doggos? Check, check, check! I really enjoyed the first book ( Tough Justice ) and couldn't wait to read book 2!
It was 100% worth the wait--I *loved* Gemma as a heroine! And Blaze is the best doggo ever. But Brett...oh, Brett, he needed some serious help...
(Which he *eventually* starts to work on, which is the only reason he was able to get to his HEA--but up until that point? It was rough going, because OMG did the poor guy have some major trauma in his past that he wasn't adequately dealing with, and it was spilling over into everything...)
The mystery of how the fires (and other miscellaneous crimes...) was supremely twisty and turny--not going to lie, when Gemma finds out a major piece of information and doesn't tell the reader yet my brain went into total overdrive trying to figure out who it was going to be. The person it ended up being was on my short list, which made the plotting here feel just about perfect between giving us clues but not giving it all away.
But Brett--I was so worried that I wasn't going to be able to be on board with their HEA with the direction that he was going with his life. Fortunately, he managed to turn things around (mostly off the page, but that's OK) enough that it satisfied this reader (and Gemma!) even if the ending wrapped things up a little abruptly.
If you haven't read the first book yet, it's not a major problem--this works fine as a standalone--though the characters from it will play smallish roles here, as will Evan (book 3's hero). But if you like romantic suspense with a side of good doggos, you really can't go wrong starting with book 1!
Now don't mind me, I'll just be sitting here patiently waiting for Evan's story...

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
NCIB investigator Gemma Scott is good a her job. As a woman in a male dominated field she has to be. She works best on her own, so she’s not thrilled when she’s forced to work with ATF agent Brett Tanner. The last time she worked with a partner it didn’t go too well for her. The only good thing about working with Brett is his K-9 partner Blaze.
Despite her reticence to work with Brett, she has to admit they make a great team. He’s got that alpha male, over protective streak going on. Yet, Brett is more than willing to listen to Gemma’s ideas and he buys into her theories about what is actually behind the series of suspicious house fires they are investigating. He’s even willing to let her take the lead. Until they start to get too close to answers to questions someone doesn’t want answered.
The author employs a variety of writing techniques that make this a great read. There are scenes in the book when the fire becomes a living, breathing entity, which heightens the suspense and adds to the drama. In contrast, Ms. O’Fallon has given Blaze an almost human personality which often provides a bit of a humorous break in the tension. His scenes tend to be written in such a way as the reader can almost tell just what Blaze is thinking in the moment. And, I love a story that starts in the middle of a scene. It absolutely pulls the reader right in and doesn’t let go.
The writing is crisp, and straightforward, which fits the nature of the story, and increases the level of apprehension and anxiety. The relationship is slow to grow as Gemma is slow to trust and Brett carries baggage from his past. Yet try as they might, they can’t resist the pull of the attraction. I’m usually frustrated by a slow burn romance, but the slow burn felt natural and made sense in this context.
This is a great follow up to the first book in the K-9 Special Ops series, Tough Justice. We even get a chance to see Tori and Deck again. I look forward to the next book in the series and can’t wait to read Evan’s story.
I love Tee O'Fallon's K-9 books and this is no exception, so I added my favorites tag to it.
Brent Tanner is an ATF agent with a tragic past. He was the only survivor of a horrible abandoned house fire as a child where his two friends perished. He's still haunted with survivor's guilt and has built walls around his heart. The only people he lets in are his two friends and his K-9 partner, Blaze.
Gemma is an insurance investigator with a theory about more than just the warehouse fire that brings them together as a team. But Gemma doesn't trust partners because she was burned by one in the past.
They work together to bring down a murderous arsonist, but will they learn to trust each other? You have to read it to find out.
I can't wait to read Evan's story, so fingers crossed! Thank you to Entangled: Amara and NetGalley for providing the digital ARC of this wonderful book. All opinions are my own.
Man, talk about a whirlwind story. Brett and Gemma's story is filled with action, suspense, and romance. I enjoyed how the past and present were tied together and woven throughout the story. Loved everything about it and looking forward to the next.
This was an exciting romantic suspense of which I really enjoyed the suspense. It certainly had me guessing on who the culprits were. I liked both Brett and Gemma as professional characters but I did find the romance between them not as convincing. Maybe because they spent most of their time chasing down leads and research. The technical information on fire and arson was interesting and certainly relevant to the story, but I did find the amount of information slowed down the pace. Kudos to the author for writing about a canine character with personality, not just a prop. In some scenes, Blaze was the star!
Gemma is an insurance investigator who has learnt the hard way that she is better off working alone however to ensure that her investigation is solved before any more casualties’ result, she knows that working with Bret is best for all involved.
Bret is an ATF whose difficult past led him into his career. When his latest investigation with his canine partner Blaze intersects with Gemma’s he soon realizes that she is accomplished in her field. The only problem is that as they work together, they are not only battling the feelings between them but the threat that only continues to mount and close in.
Gemma and Bret take us on a suspenseful and romantic journey as they find themselves facing not only the danger in the present but the events of their pasts.
Spectacular, suspenseful romance…
I love this author’s writing. She knows how to bring characters to life with vivid back stories and simply interesting, intriguing lives. And having a main character be a four-legged hero, well, that is icing on the cake…
This read was another great example. I devoured this story as the mystery surrounding dozens of fire-related murders was top of the agenda. Team up a National Insurance Crime Bureau investigator with an ATF agent, both with lots of baggage, and the chemistry was off the charts. I learned more than I ever thought I would about fire investigations and the science behind them. It felt highly technical at times but also really interesting as the clues gave Gemma and Brett a path to solving it all. Trust between them was hard won but I loved how they really became partners – in work and life…
The tension was real and the suspense and romance top-notch. Throw in a television-loving pup and a goldfish with a sympathetic ear and you have what was a fabulous read - can’t wait for more!
I love Tee O'Fallon books! They are always interesting and absorbing. I cannot wait for the next installment.
After finishing Burning Justice I had to go back and binge on Ms O’Fallon’s K-9 series. She has just the perfect blend of suspense and romance, then throw in the dog and I am hooked. Burning Justice is the latest release in the K-9 Special Ops series. It’s a standalone, so you need not to have read her other books to enjoy this story. Brett was an achingly strong survivor of tragedy that has driven him in his life and career. Then he meets Gemma, an independent arson investigator, who matches him in intellect, intuition and chemistry. She challenges him in many ways and awakens his sense to protect her. I love how their relationship develops.
This book has it all for me. Romance, suspense and strong female lead. It’s easy read and truly a stand alone, though you might be driven to read anything you might have missed.
Yet another series I'm falling in love with by this author. She is quickly becoming a one click buy for me. This not only has all the feels but so much action and suspense I could want. And let's face it, I'm a sucker for a book with dogs in it. I just can't beat this combo!
When Brett and his K9 Blaze team up with Gemma to investigate a fire, they find a correlation to a past fire where Brett was injured. Not only that but they find evidence linking many more fires around the State that have the same MO. They also find that they have more in common than they ever thought they would, and soon the attraction sparks. They both have issues in their pasts that hinders them both from moving forward as a couple and if they don’t figure out how to deal with them, they may lose more than they have ever thought was possible.
A great read with some suspense, steam, surprises, twists and turns and amazing characters including a K9 named Blaze. Gemma, an independent, strong woman who hold her own and Brett, a man with survivor’s guilt who is compassionate and protective, who needs a strong woman to help him break the chains that hold him back from a relationship. The story flowed beautifully with spot on descriptions and I couldn’t put the book down once I started. I would have liked an epilogue to see them in the future and where they end up….4.5 stars.
*I voluntarily read an advanced copy and expressed my honest opinion*
I have started seeking out Tee O'Fallon books. She is an excellent author! It took me longer to read this than I wanted because of life interruptions. I plan to read it again in one sitting on one of my vacation days during the holidays. I loved the storyline and the characters were easy to like. I enjoyed the push/pull between Brett and Gemma. I was completely invested in the outcome of the case as well as the romance. I'd give more than five stars if I could!
Thank you NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for the ARC of this book. This is my voluntary and honest review.
I enjoyed the last series and I am loving this new one. Told in dual points of view, this book will keep you reading; then when Brett and Gemma get close to solving the mystery, I promise, you will be on the edge of your seat Together these two are invincible with a multifaceted mystery to keep you on the edge of your seat! You won't want to put this down, so get ready for an all-night read! 5+ stars from me
Another fantastic story from Tee O’Fallon! She can put together the most alpha men with strong women and create a story that keeps your attention until the very end. It is an intricately woven drama that has many moving pieces, all of which eventually fit together to give you one heck of an ending! Brett and Gemma won’t stop unless they figure it all out and that means lots of emotions and steam too! Loved it!
When Brett Tanner was a kid he survived a fire that killed two of his friends, now as an ATF agent he knows what its like to get to close to the fire. He has physical proof. After a suspicious warehouse fire, the second on the same building, there is a body found and an insurance agent that ties his past together along with the present.
Gemma Scott is fiercely independent, after getting overlooked because her partner stole her case she has vowed to never work with anyone again. After taking the case information to Brett she is second guessing her decision, but knows she needs help to dive deeper and is trusting her instincts by doing something she hasn't done in awhile, trust someone else.
Now Gemma, Brett, and Blaze are working to catch an arsonist with an agenda, one that has killed before to hide evidence. However, there is a mystery built beneath the case, one that is a danger to everyone involved. Will they be able to catch the killer/arsonist in time?
Tee O'Fallon did it again with Brett and Blaze. I love the partnerships she creates between the K9 and the handler. She is able to create memorable characters and stories that just keep you entrenched in the story and keep you wanting more. I kept wanting to know what happened next and just kept reading oblivious to what was going on around me. I loved the realistic qualities of this book, you can tell that she really takes the time to not only put her experiences in books but also has someone she trusts help her to get everything right. The only bad thing I have to say about this book is the ending. I felt like it just ended and left us with questions about what happened between Brett and Gemma. I recommend this book and series and hope you enjoy it.
Received ARC in exchange for voluntary honest review.
Great continuation of the series! Brett is a great ATF Special Agent and along with the insurance investigator Gemma Scott they are battling time to find out who is setting all these fires and why. It was not the person that I thought it was, which just tells me the author knows what she's doing. Deck and Tori had bit parts, but I was glad to see them show up again. Can't wait for more books in this series.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. This review is based on an ARC from NetGalley, courtesy of the publisher.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for granting me an advance copy of this book in return for my honest opinions.
Loved this heartwarming story and the
Characters of Brett Tanner and Gemma Scott and, of course the loving canine, Blaze.
I loved everything about this book. Loved the romance, plot and especially the pets!
Looking forward to the next edition!!!!!
Recommend!!!
This book was deliciously steamy and wickedly good! Brett and Gemma take you on an intense thrill ride filled with breath stealing action, edge of your seat suspense and tantalizing mystery. Both main characters were awesome and their chemistry and sparks electric. Loved every minute of it.
3.5 stars
This book starts strong. I was immediately invested in Brett and Gemma having a relationship. They start out as forming a partnership to catch a possible arsonist, Brett working for the ATF and Gemma working as an insurance investigator, so giving into their feelings isn’t exactly appropriate. Plus, Gemma has a huge chip on her shoulder due to the misogyny in her field and having to constantly work to prove her worth to those around her. Although they don’t give in to their desires and chemistry right away, there are plenty of heated gazes.
For Brett, the case they’re working on is personal. His drive is such that it has always gotten in the way of any relationship he’s attempted. Since both Gemma and Brett feel they aren’t made for a relationship, there’s a lot of push and pull throughout the story. This works well to keep things moving without stagnation. There are a few times I thought the book got a bit too into the ins and outs of the case; a bit of too much information.
Several people could be suspects so it kept me guessing right along with the characters. For me, this is a good thing. It kept me turning the pages once things got going. On top of that, I loved the little bit we saw of Gemma’s friends and family. She’s a bit of a lone wolf and never asks anyone for help, which means we don’t see much of them.
There’s one more friend from this trio of K-9 handlers who needs some happiness. I have a feeling his will be a grueling story, but I’m looking forward to reading it.
Brett and his partner Blaze were called to a warehouse fire. What Brett didn't expect to find was another person investigating the same fires that he was. NICB agent Gemma was at the site and she wasn't used to working as a team. A body in the wreckage turned this questionable arson investigation into a murder scene.
Can 2 people who are used to working alone join forces to discover whose is torching houses in the Denver area?
Can they learn to overcome their own pasts and issues and learn to trust each other during the investigation?
Will they figure out who is burning down the houses and why? Read "Burning Justice" by Tee O'Fallon to find out.
