Yet again, I am drawn to a "locked room" style thriller - this time in a snowy French ski resort, in a nod to the recent change in the weather! 🧊🥶
It's quite common now for chapters to provide alternating points of view and/or timelines and this book does both. I found everything quite straightforward to follow, although I didn't have everything worked out by the end - no change there then!
This is a slow burn - not just because of the snowy conditions. There is a lot of history between the characters from their university days up to the present that the reader is brought up to speed with, so after an exciting start, the pace does slow a bit. It's not boring, but more of a drama than a thriller for a while.
While the eventual revelations are nothing particularly "out there" in terms of novelty, I didn't work them out, so all-in-all an enjoyable sojourn in the Alps!
Thanks to the author, HQ Digital, and NetGalley for the eARC of this book.
Fab page turner that keeps you wanting more. This wasn’t my first book by Sarah but loves it as much. Fab read.
I found this book a little bit difficult to get into. I like the idea of it but I struggled to keep characters straight as well as what was going on in the story. I hope to give it another try in the future.
The SKi Trip bu Sarah CLarke delivers a classic ski chalet whodunnit that, while somewhat clichéd, benefits from strong writing and well-developed characters, making it an engaging read despite its familiar premise.
The story kicks off with a seemingly tragic accident when four friends' skiing trip in the Alps ends abruptly with the death of one member, Tom. As Zoe and Ivy travel to France to retrieve Tom's body, the narrative shifts from grief to suspicion. Ivy begins to question the circumstances of Tom’s death, suspecting foul play among his closest friends who remain at the chalet.
The alpine setting adds a chilly atmosphere that complements the tense dynamics among the characters. The picturesque yet treacherous mountains serve as a fitting backdrop for the unfolding drama. However, the plot of a ski trip gone wrong and the subsequent mystery surrounding a suspicious death feels somewhat tired and predictable. The genre has seen many similar stories, and this one doesn't stray far from the expected path.
Despite the overused plot structure, the novel shines through its compelling characters. Zoe's heartfelt grief and Ivy's determined quest for the truth create a strong emotional core that keeps readers invested. The complexities of the relationships between the friends, as well as the tensions and secrets that come to light, are skillfully portrayed. These dynamics make the book a page-turner, as readers become eager to uncover the true nature of the group's interactions and the real cause of Tom's death.
The writing itself is another highlight. The author deftly balances descriptive passages that capture the beauty and danger of the Alps with tight, suspenseful dialogue that propels the mystery forward. This blend of evocative imagery and sharp storytelling keeps the pace brisk and the reader engaged, even when the plot veers into familiar territory.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for the review of The Ski Trip, which in summary is a solid thriller that, while not breaking new ground in the whodunnit genre, offers an entertaining and emotionally resonant experience. The strong writing and nuanced characters make up for the predictable storyline, resulting in a book that thriller fans will likely enjoy. It's a decent 3 out of 5 stars, perfect for those who appreciate character-driven mysteries set against dramatic landscapes.
A very creepy undertone to the book throughout, which the mountain setting helps with and some really good twists. Thoroughly enjoyed it. It's well written and fast paced.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Great thriller that was so well written. This was fast paced and hooked me right from the start. Really great book.
I went in to this book not expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised, I got a snowy creepy atmosphere and I couldn’t put this book down! Atmospheric and krr we of mdd weed guessing g until the end! Great thriller to read!
Thank you SO much to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book.
I absolutely loved this!! Such great characters and a great storyline.
My full review is to follow in a few days.....
A boys skiing trip, best friends from uni who drift apart, and a death. Sounds like my kind of read!
Julian, Tom, Harry and Rob all have pretty big egos and when Tom dies in a blizzard, it appears that they could all have potential motive for murder. Tom's brokenhearted wife, Zoe, begs her old uni friend, Ivy, to accompany her to the ski resort and that's when the drama really ramps up! More twists and turns than a black run!
I kept changing my mind throughout, wondering who, amongst all of the unreliable and egotistical characters would take it as far as murder and the end was a huge shock.
4 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Sarah Clarke and HQ for an ARC in return for an honest review.
A ski trio amongst friends, what could go wrong?! This is so well written, I really felt like I was there (I’ve never been skiing!) I could picture it really well. The plot twists were well executed and it end well too.
This was a great thriller. I loved the setting which was in a ski resort in France. The plot was very cleverly crafted with lots of twists. I was kept guessing about what had happened during the accident. My suspicions kept changing as I read on. The ending was a great twist and totally unexpected. I would defintitely read another book by this author.
Fast paced, hard to let put down thriller! Some things were a bit predictable, however, I really enjoyed this one. Thanks netgalley and the publishers.
Wow, what a conclusion, didn't see that coming at all.
So much good stuff in the pages of this incredibly gripping book, that I was totally enthralled by.
We have Ivy and Zoe, who have gone out to France, after Zoe's husband Tom dies on a boys ski trip. They are all old friends, but there is something about the accident that has Ivy asking many questions.
We learn a lot about the groups mixed history, in addition to the ups and downs of Ivy's pasts with a few of them in particular.
And the descriptions of the skiing were to die for!
I couldn't' get enough of this book, and just wanted to keep on reading, even past the end page.
Was fabulous.
Thank you to HQ Digital and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Secrets abound in this new thriller from Sarah Clarke. When her sometimes best friend's husband dies in a skiing accident with friends, Ivy is reluctantly persuaded to temporarily part from her young son to accompany a grieving Ivy to organise collection of Tom's body. Ivy is the only person concerned that the supposed accident may be more than that.
I didn't fully believe in all the characters and their varied motivations but it was still an interesting read. Also a snowy landscape that can be easily cut off always makes for a great setting.
I love a book set in the Alps, reminds me of my time in the Snowy Mountains. I couldnt guess who did it and was it an accident. Unfortunately I just couldnt connect with Zoe.
I really enjoyed this thriller, the snow setting was really atmospheric.
I didn’t really attach to the characters, especially the mates! But I loved the authors writing so will definitely read more of her books
Four friends from college are on a skiing holiday in the Alps when one of them falls to their death. Zoe, Tom’s wife, and their friend Ivy fly to France to collect his body. While Zoe is grieving, Ivy continues to listen to the stories of everyone present on the day of the accident and as a result questions everything, especially whether it truly was an accident. And, if it wasn’t an accident, who is responsible?
Tom was an excellent skier, so Ivy continues to piece together what she knows of the events of that day. If her suspicions are correct, the person responsible is still at the chalet.
I really enjoyed this novel and trying to piece together who was responsible. The different twists and turns kept me on my toes.
Thank you to NetGalley and HQ for allowing me to read an ARC of this novel. #NetGalley #TheSkiTrip
I really wanted to get to this one, as it seemed interesting. The downfall was that I requested so many ARCs that I could not get to all of them before the book was archived. If I can find this somewhere for a reasonable price, I will try to get it!
The Ski Trip is a page-turning snowy thriller, a gripping read perfect for this time of year.
Four friends, all of whom have known each other since they were at university, head off on a boy’s skiing holiday to Morzine but the trip ends in tragedy when one of them, Tom, has a fatal fall. His widow Zoe travels to France with her friend Ivy to collect his body. But Ivy soon begins to question what really happened, particularly as Tom was an experienced skier and his death happened on a relatively benign slope. Was his death other than an accident - and is one of his friends responsible?
Told from three different points of view, and moving between the present and the friends’ time at university, this is a book that will keep you guessing as there seem to be suspects galore and motives aplenty! The Alps setting is vividly described - there is something uniquely intense about a ski resort, particularly in bad weather - and I raced through it never quite knowing who or what to believe but keen to find out the truth. And the truth was pretty dramatic!
Ivy, a very private person, meets up, after many years absence, with her old university friend Zoe and agrees to travel with her to a ski resort in France when Zoe’s husband mysteriously dies.
An absorbing twisty psychological thriller. Find out what really happened.
