Enjoyable.
I love the concept of two owners of rival bars being enemies and then falling in love. This was super fun to read, with the pranks and hijinks and back and forth sabotage. This was a great enemies to lovers book, but I do think that it was rushed at the end. They spent the majority of the book hating each other and it was a slow burn, but then all of the sudden they are together and happy and in love. Aside from that though, it was really good. An enjoyable read with cute moments and a good storyline!
I really enjoyed this book, it's a fun enemies-to-lovers, opposites-attract kind of story.
I liked that sexual orientation was freely talked about and to see a MMC that's a bit out of the norm.
We could see the development of both characters and their relationship, even though I'd preferred to have had a bit more of them together. We were really left hanging in there 'til the last moment!
All in all, it's a nice book, worth reading! You won't be disappointed.
I willingly received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.
Isadora's opening up the literature-themed bar of her dreams, and needs everything to go by the book, literally. Her plans start to fall apart when a famous football player opens a sports bar right next door, and she finds herself with an enemy, the owner's son, Chuck. The two battle it out to become the more successful bar, but soon find out they might have more in common than they think.
This was a cute enemies-to-lovers story, and I desperately need to Gertrude's-esque bar in my life. There was definitely more hatred on Isadora's side, and I agreed with Chuck's assessment that her pranks were more mean-spirited rather than funny. Chuck's easy forgiveness of her added to his intrigue, and though we saw half the story through his eyes, I wish we could have learned even more about him, other than some surface-level character traits.
I did think the Eva plot line felt unnecessary, especially the way it ended! I also wish we could have seen Isadora and Chuck's relationship more than in just the epilogue, as we waited the whole book for them to get together. I wanted to see how they worked together and merged their ideas and businesses, and how Chuck found purpose for himself.
First thought: This was your classic enemy to lovers novel with a fun fresh perspective and storyline. If this is your trope it’s a great read!
Meet Isadora she is a young hard working women who lives each day to the fullest and is out to conquer her dreams. She decided to open a book lovers bar that celebrates literature. Little did she know she be competing with her new neighbor soon to turn enemy in a cutthroat war of the businesses. Only one will survive and she has to decide how low she’ll sink to come out on top.
Then you have Chuck the new owner of the sports bar next store. Living in his famous parents shadows and expectations struggling to find purpose in his life. Until he meets Isadora that is and his purpose becomes one uping the competition in their little war. Little did he know the path he goes down will lead him to self discovery and maybe even love. As they say all things are fair in love and war.
Overall this book is book is great it just didn’t wow me. I think the hate portion was really long and the turn lovers portion took a long time to get it. When it was finally there it was a very quick wrap up. I enjoyed the characters so the fast end was a bit disappointing.
Make Me a Double is about rival bars owned by Chuck and Isadora. I like Chuck and Isadora as characters but the story was a bit of a slow middle and felt a little rushed at the end but it had an good twist.
A very cute read but it could have been waaayy shorter than what it was. I didn't really appreciate how the fmc and mmc were fighting over 70% of the story and then suddenly realized they should put their differences aside. Just felt that if the author would have cut the fighting and stretched out the getting together it would have been way better.
Thank you NetGalley and Mirror House Press for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review!
Isadora had worked hard for years to save up for her dream business, a book bar. She’s a driven and intelligent young woman. Opening day approaches as she renovates the new space but problems start occurring with the neighbor next door. This new neighbor, Chuck, is also opening a sports bar the same day. Chuck is the son of a NFL star who has everything handed to him and is seen as a spoiled jock. Their bar fight goes to extreme as these two try to sabotage the other. Their witty banter and pranks had me laughing out loud. Make Me a Double is written from both character’s perspectives and you learn what makes each tick. The growth and change in both of these characters will leave you wanting more of their story!
What a read! I couldn’t put it down and wanted to continue with their high jinks and banter. Thank you @netgalley and @rainajoywilder for allowing me this ARC read! #makemeadouble will be releasing July 1st and you won’t want to miss this! I just reviewed Make Me a Double by Raina Joy Wilder.
Perfect breezy beach read. Isadora and Chuch are complete opposites and pull of the enemies to lovers trope effortlessly. It was a Hallmark movie in book form. The banter is so cute and I would definetly recommend this as a beach read you can finish in a day.
First of all, I want to thank the author and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Make me a double by Raina Joy Wilder is coming out on July 1, 2023.
Really cute Enemies to lovers rom-com. This is another really good summer beach read. This was a cute entertaining quick read that I would recommend to my friends. #MakeMeaDouble #NetGalley
Unfortunately, I did not love this book. It was cute and I did LOVE chuck, the MMC, but it fell a little flat at the end.
I think it was cutesy, easy to read romcom. The book is a slowwwww burn, enemies to lovers, neighbors/forced proximity, opposites attract, he falls first, dual POV book.
Also, can Gertrude’s please be a real place because, I would live there!! Ughhhhh.
I enjoyed that Chuck just owned up to his flaws and poor decisions. I see in most books where characters that have done crappy things also have this underlying long back story as to why. Sometimes people are just sh$&ty and that is okay, just own it and do better. So I really appreciated that about chuck.
My reason for not loving the book is the timing. The couple spent the entire book fighting and then at the 90% mark finally got together. It was just so much build up and then the end happened so fast I felt like I had whiplash and I was a little confused on it as well. I wanted to see more of Chuck and Isadora together as a couple! I was sad to not see that.
Spice level 🌶✨1.5/5
I really loved this classic enemies to lovers rom com. A cute, well written story with likable characters and good pacing. The duel point of view was crucial and done well. Good pacing and easy fun read. Perfect summer beach read.
I loved the cover for this book which drew me in. An enemies to lovers trope. I didn't care for the MMC Chuck (entitled jerk TBH) not sure why the FMC would be attracted to how he acted. However a fun romcom that doesn't take itself seriously, with funny bits and a sweet ending.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.
The idea of a book bar is fabulous. So many people would love it. I really wonder if anyone has tried to open one?
That was my favorite part of the book. I could get into the characters, specifically Chuck. It’s hard to envision a hero named Chuck, sorry. Beyond that he was kind of a jerk and It made it hard to root for in the end.
You may enjoy it, but the characters fell a little flat for me.
Isadora Valenti is finally ready to open her bar for book lovers called Gertrude’s. She’s optimistic about the future until she discovers a sports bar, Brady’s is opening right next door. It’s owned by Chuck McCaffrey, a wealth jokester who thinks Isadora’s bar is a joke.
A feud between the two bars has things heating up between Isadora and Chuck. Gertrude’s niche bar struggles while Brady’s becomes the spot for trouble. As Isadora and Chuck get to know each other they begin to see each other in a different light. They may be able to work together to save their bars and have their own happy ending.
I was looking forward to reading Make Me a Double after seeing the blurb, but as I read there were more and more elements that I didn’t enjoy.
I enjoyed the storyline a lot, it was funny, certain elements were unexpected, and it made me laugh.
I had a hard time rooting for Isadora and Chuck as individuals and as a couple. They fell flat for me.
Some of Isadora’s personality traits were a bit conflicting for me (no spoilers). There were just too many things that didn’t feel like they fit.
And when I picture someone with the name, Chuck, I picture a slightly overweight truck driver with a propensity for flannels and trucker hats. And the way he acted was exactly what you’d expect from someone from his background (no spoilers). His lack of action during several scenes really irritated me.
And after reading the book, I felt like the cover didn’t really fit.
Great compelling read, hard to put down once started, playful story line with endearing characters, It is highly entertaining quick read that will help you relay after a day in the office.
Gertrude's is basically every Creative Writing major's dream. I'm starting to cool on the enemies to lovers trope bc i just don't know why these smart gorgeous women want to give these assholes a chance to show that they are good people, but that's on me and the storyline was adorable.
The premise of the book is intriguing, a bar for literature lovers. I found the characters well-developed, I could see them all in their differences and their behaviors felt authentic to what I imagine them to be like but I did find that the book initially included parts that didn't feel relevant to the main plot of the story which is the relationship between the two main characters. Despite that, the book is still an entertaining quick-read that has funny sentences that are enjoyable to read.
I really enjoyed this book! If you’re looking for a quick, dual POV rom com this is the book for you!
Tropes: Enemies to lovers, slow burn, opposites attract
Isadora spent years working hard and saving money to open up Gertrude’s, a literary bar. She is hopeful the book bar will be a hit in this small town. Her hopes are rattled when she learns Chuck McCaffrey is opening a sports bar, right next door. Chuck is the son of a wealthy ex-football player who seemingly had everything handed to him his whole life. Isadora and Chuck immediately bump heads. The story follows the two as they battle it out, who will have the better bar? Who will attract the most customers?
The banter between Isadora and Chuck had me giggling throughout. The “enemies” of their enemies to lovers’ dynamic is very playful. This book definitely has the vibes of early 2000’s rom com, making it really enjoyable to read.
I love the few glimpses we get with Isadora and her father, one of my favorite quotes from her dad was, “Who loves you even half as much as I do. Because half of-” “Infinity is still infinity,” I finish.” It is a nice contrast to Chuck and his father’s own relationship.
I also enjoyed Chuck’s character development throughout the book while he tries to navigate what he wants out of life, without his dad opinions weighing on him.
This book overall is a fun rom com experience. And I would definitely recommend if you’re looking for a swoon worthy book!
