Chef Maggie Riley book 2.
We go back to Coyote cove and there’s a ferocious storm heading toward the isolated town of Coyote Cove when Chief Maggie Riley gets the call every cop dreads. Three bodies have been found on Rattlesnake Mountain, half a day’s hike from civilization. And when Maggie finally reaches the site, exhausted and freezing, she discovers something even more terrifying—a tiny baby girl, kept alive only by the warmth of a small dog who refuses to leave her side.
As Maggie races the baby to safety, she wonders, why on earth the family risked hiking the mountain in this weather? Who were they and who could possibly have killed them.
Like the first book each chapter is told from a different characters perspective. I really enjoy it as it makes the plot line move quickly and you get a good feel of who they are. But there is also more secrets and lies to keep you hooked from start to finish. Loved it.
Book two in the Chief Maggie Riley series finds Maggie responding to a report of 3 bodies found by hikers on a mountain, a half a day’s hike from civilization. She enlists the help of a local guide to reach the scene, and once there, she discovers a live baby girl hidden in the bushes, along with a dog who refuses to leave her side. Added to Maggie’s plate is a visit from her future mother-in-law who does not approve of her, a pretentious and uncooperative State Police officer assigned to the case, a town that still has issues trusting her, and a blizzard that cuts the town off from the outside world, trapping the murderer there with them. This is a real page-turner that will keep you guessing until the very end. This has quickly become one of my favorite series to read, and I’m looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and author Shannon Hollinger for the advance read copy of this book.
Chief Maggie Riley gets a call of 3 bodies found on Rattlesnake Mountain, as storm is coming and there is no time to waste. Still down a lieutenant she is the only one to go up and investigate. As she looks around, she hears something and finds a dog but that is not all.
The storm is shutting the town down and so the suspects are all locked in.
Book 2 was just a quick page turning as book 1 – hoping for many more books in this series.
This is book two in the series. It’s been a wonderful series so far. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
Maggie Riley is the Chief of police in the small town of Coyote Cove in Maine. She receives a dreaded call that three bodies have been discovered on Rattlesnake Mountain, a remote area that requires a long hike.
Along with the help of a local tour guide, Maggie makes her way to the scene and discovers something shocking! A baby has survived, along with a little doggie. Maggie searches for clues and discovers that the murdered hikers aren’t who they appeared to be.
Maggie must discover how and why they were killed. Can she catch the perpetrator before they strike again?
Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
When a book synopsis compares itself to a Melinda Leigh or Lisa Regan book, the bar is set pretty high. Luckily Shannon Hollinger's Chief Maggie Riley series qualifies on all points. THEIR ANGEL'S CRY is the second in this series, it can be read as a stand alone but the first book, THE GIRL WHO LIED, was pretty awesome too.
Maine weather is known for the severity of it's storms. So when Coyote Cove, Maine's Cheif Riley receives the report of bodies found, she is racing an advancing storm to get to the scene. Once there, she discovers an innfant and must get the child back to town before they have to shelter in the storm. This back story adds an added element to the next scenes as Cheif Riley must now investigate a murder while the storm keeps everyone in town with no way for the killer to leave the area.
Hollinger manages to build the story adding tension and speed to the unwinding, with lots of small clues scattered throughout, until the race to catch the killer comes to Maggie's door.
So having read books 1 and 2 of the Chief Maggie Riley series, the more I read of it, the more I like it. It took a little while for the characters to grow on me. I wasn’t sure I liked Maggie and Steve at the start of the series, but I am really a fan now. Both books had a storm threatening to tamper with things. In book 1, as Maggie is introduced, things are very personal and both Maggie and Steve have secrets that threaten to derail their life in Maine.
There are many POVs in the books, which is a switch for me in the usual detective novels I read. As I read, I wasn’t sure why the POVs outside of Maggie and Steve were important and only as the story progressed did it become clear why they were. Both stories are layered and kept me wanting more. They are fast paced, full of suspense and there were some twists along the way.
Book 3 comes out September 1 and I can’t wait to see where the series is heading.
I listened to book 1 and read book 2 and enjoyed both formats. Both kept me interested and were easy to follow.
If you want to jump in at the beginning of a new detective series, this one won’t disappoint.
Their Angel’s Cry by Shannon Hollinger due to be published August 2, 2024 by Bookouture!
I absolutely love Shannon Hollinger and everything she writes. They’re such fast reads and easy to get into! The characters are very likeable.
This is the first book I’ve read in the Chief Maggie Riley series but not the first book I’ve read from the author. I cannot wait to read more about Maggie! Highly recommend this book and all of her others!!
I want to thank Shannon Hollinger, Netgalley and Bookouture for allowing me the chance to read this ARC.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an ARC of this book in exchange for a review.
This is the second book in the Chief Maggie Riley series. Maggie is chief in the tiny town for Coyote Cove without a lieutenant and suspecting that most people in the town dislike her. The book begins with her finding three people dead on one of the close mountains with a baby and a dog hiding in the bushes. There are two hikers who have stumbled on the bodies just before she did. And so Maggie has to find out first how they died, why was the baby left there, and who did it. There are red herrings everywhere and the culprit was a surprise.
This is a book that you can read in one or two sittings. As with the first book, the plot is interesting. And as with the first book, each chapter has a different POV. It can get very confusing as to who is who. It also is misleading. When reading the POV of the person who ends up being the culprit, there isn't a clue and that's not fair game. It's hard to like anyone in this story. Maggie lives in her head and is a drama queen. Steve, her boyfriend, is hiding something big but we don't know what. The medical examiner was the best character in the book. Oh and the dog the real hero!!!!
Second book about Chief Maggie Riley. Three bodies are found on a mountain trail with cause of death not obvious. This was good, except I felt like the misogynistic state police agent was not really necessary and kind of detracted from the story. There was enough going on with out that. I liked Erika, the pathologist, and hope she might be back in future books. 4 stars
I started this right after reading Book 1 because I couldn’t get enough of Chief Maggie Riley and Coyote Cove.
This case is so sinister, a family murdered on a mountain top with no obvious injuries and a little innocent baby left behind, how strange ?.
It’s down to Maggie to solve this, that’s if she can find the strength.
Wow and just wow! This story was another heart pounding read, with some more unexpected and shocking twists that I never saw coming, once again Maggie showed just what she’s capable of and omg the huge cliffhanger and revelation at the end of the book has me counting down the days until book 3!.
Shannon Hollinger has done it again. I read the first book in this series and was so excited when my request for the second ARC was approved, as well. This book follows Chief Maggie Riley as she investigates yet another murder in the town of Coyote Cove, Maine; this time it's the middle of winter and 3 people are found dead on one of the towns neighboring mountain trails, with no evident cause of death. Also at the scene? A small dog who refuses to leave the side of a tiny baby, who is cold but still alive, found in the bushes near the bodies.
This really was such a fun, exciting read with lots of twists that keep you on your toes. The author does an incredible job of making you relate to the main characters, while simultaneously causing you to second guess and question the motives of every potential suspect. I cannot wait to read the 3rd book when it releases later this year.
What an amazing series this is! I am completely enthralled and cannot wait for the next. Loved this book and did not want it to finish even as I frantically turned the pages, gripped by the incredibly addictive and transporting tale. This author is sheer genius.
Bodies of two men and a woman are found dead in the mountains and Maggie must investigate. But soon she will also find a puppy protecting a baby and there will be more to unsolve than just who murdered the three victims.
This was a fantastic follow-up to book one. Getting to know the character of Maggie more, Shannon writes a fantastic and realistic main character.
This narrative was atmospheric, with detailed descriptions I needed to know what happened next. A great book two in this series that I would highly recommend
I am so glad I found this series, I love Chief Maggie! I want to be as bad-ass as she is when I grow up! This one had quite a few twists and turns and I loved it! My fave is winning over her future MIL and making her a dog lover! Can't wait to read the next one in the series!

Their Angel's Cry is book 2 in the Maggie Riley series. I liked the first book and couldn't wait to start this one.
Maggie gets a call to investigate of bodies in the mountains. When she arrives she finds what looks like a family of two adults and one offspring. There are no apparent signs of what could have killed them. While investigating Maggie also finds a dog protecting a baby. Maggie needs to get them off the mountain and fast. The weather can change in an instant up there.
Things I liked:
realistic characters
balance of detective work and personal life
multiple suspects
fast paced
easy to read, flows nicely
Animal lovers will like the how dogs are represented and the roles they played throughout the book.
Looking forward to book 3.
Thanks to netgalley and Bookouture for the arc.
What an emotional and thrilling sequel to the first book in this series. Police Chief Maggie Riley was a strong, smart and highly decorated detective before she became the chief in Coyote Cove. Following up on the report that there are dead bodies on the top of Rattlesnake Mountain, she finds two males and a female, all deceased. She doesn’t see a possible cause of death, but what she does find is a puppy and a baby, both alive, hidden in the bushes. A puzzling case as she pulls in the state police to aid her small-town department. In her personal life, Maggie is now engaged to Steve with wedding plans to make. They support each other, especially when his mother unexpectedly arrives in town. The homicide case turns more serious when Maggie learns that the woman and one of the men were a couple and their reason for the clandestine meeting on the mountain. Can she find the killer and the parents of the baby before the killer turns their sights on her? I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. I would like to thank #Netgalley and #Bookouture for an advance copy of #Their Angel’s Cry by #ShannonHollinger the second novel to feature #Maggie Riley, Chief of Police in the fictional Maine town of Coyote Cove.
Maggie gets a call that bodies have been found on a trail outside town, once there she discovers a baby girl still alive shivering in the storm and only being kept alive by the heat from the small dog that won’t leave her side.
With a storm raging and the town cut off can Maggie find the murderer before they find her.
3.5 stars rounded up.
Cheif Maggie Reilly is called to a scene on a mountain, where someone on a hike has encountered multiple bodies.
Maggie hikes up to the scene, sees no obvious sign of cause of death but as she's waiting for back up to arrive, she hears the sound of a dog. That dog is protecting and may have saved a sole survivor, a baby 😭.
Who killed the people on the mountain and why?
This was a solid police procedural, with some aspects that require suspend disbelief. To be honest, it wasn't overly thrilling but still a good journey and good read.
I have never lived in snow and I enjoyed the scene and reading more about how people who do live in the snow live or endure.
The dog parts in this are just so special and written well, portraying the loyalty and love for and from pets is just perfect. I also enjoy the side stories about Maggie and her life outside of work.
My main issue with this is that there's a bit of repetition, really stating the obvious and writing as though there's an expectation the reader cannot fill in any blanks. It didn't ruin the story, but it gets a bit frustrating at times. Also, is it really possible in America that one cop would be allowed to work in a town without a lieutenant or any kind of colleague with training?!

Their Angel’s Cry is the second book in a a gripping new series by Shannon Hollinger. This book had me from the very first page and did not let go! I loved the setting, the atmosphere, the mystery, and the characters.
A horrific discovery had been made on Rattlesnake Mountain and Chief Maggie Riley takes the call. Bodies have been found by hikers and when Maggie makes it to the snowy location, she also finds a tiny baby and a dog in the underbrush. Who killed the family? What was the motive? With a storm brewing, Maggie is on the hunt for answers and a killer!
Atmospheric, tense, well written, and hard to put down! Maggie is still dealing with the fallout from The Girl Who Lied and the town's reaction to her. She keeps doing her job with quiet determination. Plus, the character's secrets play a role in this book as well.
I enjoyed the tension in this book as well as the atmosphere. The snow, the small town and a killer set the stage. The main characters are also a big draw and have me wanting more of them, their backstories and their relationships to each other.
This is a promising new series that is only getting better. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!
As if the discovery of three dead bodies isn’t shocking enough, a tiny baby and a little dog are found as well. Desperate to get the baby to warmth and safety, Chief Maggie Riley certainly has her hands full. Why were they all in the mountains in such inclement weather? Even more, how did the baby survive?
Maggie struggles to find the identity of the dead bodies, all while remaining concerned for the welfare of the young baby. As the weather turns worse, Maggie finds herself in a race against time.
What an excellent second book in a thrilling new series by Shannon Hollinger. Thankfully I was able to binge the first book and also the third book, The Shadow Girl. Maggie is quite an interesting character, and her back story caught my attention, as well as the small town politics she is living with now. Also, the unraveling of Maggie’s past as well as her fiancé Steve’s secrets added an additional layer to this second book. I loved the twists in this story and this is one series I am eager to follow.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
