This thriller did not disappoint. I was excited to get to read the next in the Chief Maggie Riley series - and it lived up to the hype! This story similar to the first surrounds multiple characters and their points of view. Included again are Maggie and Steve (her now fiancée), but also a great set of secondary characters. There are more possible options for "who did it" this time around, but just as many twists. This time the story is about the investigation of three bodies on the top of a mountain, a baby and a dog - but no clear cause of death. To top it off a monster blizzard comes in and causes even more chaos. Definitely recommend and and excited to dig into the next book!
Immersive and intense, this psychological crime thriller is mysterious, suspenseful and twisty. The weather creates a closed-room scenario as Maggie, the police chief, tries to determine what happened to the three dead people on the mountain. The town remains hostile to her after the death of one of their own, and she still doesn't believe she deserves the man who wants to marry her. The complex case and the apparent danger to the inhabitants override her concerns. I like the multi viewpoints that keep the reader guessing who is trustworthy, the breathtaking tension created, and the investigation's complexity.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
Addictive characters keep you coming back for more! The second book in the Chief Maggie Riley series showcases Maggie and her detective skills once again as danger comes to her snow covered town in Maine and tries to reign terror down on them all. I still am not fully sold on the writing style, but the characters are holding my interest enough for now to bring me back to see what happens to Maggie, Steve and the townsfolk.
Chief Maggie is once again knee deep in intrigue as a crime occurs that has the whole system racing against time to figure out whodunnit and who the next victim might be.
I recommend this book as well as the rest of the series to anyone that likes a thriller that has relatable main characters who are working crime after crime as life passes them by.
I want to start off by saying thank you to Netgalley, Bookouture, and Shannon Hollinger for the approval to read and review this book.
Their Angel’s Cry is the second book in The Chief Maggie Reilly series. This novel is another perfect dark thriller suspense. If I said it once, I will say it again: Hollinger knows how to write a book that hooks you at the first chapter and keeps you on your toes until the end. She truly does specialize in organizing and presenting multiple POVs in such a way that keeps you understanding who is who.
This novel starts a few months after book one, and boy, does Coyote Cove holds a lot of secrets. There’s a ferocious storm heading toward the isolated town of Coyote Cove when Chief Maggie Riley gets the call every cop dreads. Three bodies have been found on Rattlesnake Mountain, half a day’s hike from civilization. And when Maggie finally reaches the site, exhausted and freezing, she discovers something even more terrifying—a tiny baby girl, kept alive only by the warmth of a small dog who refuses to leave her side.
This novel was a great addition to the series; I was engrossed in the complex plot, which kept me intrigued and wanting to know who did it. I loved getting to see more of the challenges and relationship between Maggie and Steve. Although the two have tension and secrets, its apparent that they both care for each other. I want to note that I really enjoyed the concept of there being more than one suspect. Each suspect brought up had a dark past or behavior that would make them the prime candidate for who murdered the three victims. With all three hiding something it made guessing who a beautiful challenge, which in turn made the reveal so worth it.
Another 5-star read from Shannon Hollinger is becoming a new favorite author of mine. Highly Recommend!
Their Angel's Cry is the second book in the Chief Maggie Riley series.
The story begins shortly after the first one ended. I have not read the first one but requested it on NetGalley hoping to read it and the one that follows this one.
Maggie is on her way to the scene of three dead bodies which appear to be a family. Maggie has sent Brad the guide she asked for help to go down the mountain and wait for the help she called for to arrive. While waiting she observes the scene, but she hears something in the brush off the path. She discovers a dog that is trembling and crying. She calls to the dog, but it refuses to move. As Maggie moves closer, she sees a small bundle, a baby shivering in the cold.
A blizzard is heading towards the small town of Coyote Cove. Maggie will have her hands full as she tries to solve the mystery while being shorthanded.
It is an action packed, riveting thriller. The book is told from multiple points of views, Each chapter leaves the reader wondering and sometimes holding their breath. There are a few spots that are funny that made me laugh out loud, which was unexpected. There are many characters that have secrets which are not revealed until the end. I didn't see the reveal coming at the end as all the characters look like they might be the person responsible. It was a fantastic read and am looking forward to reading the whole series.
Thanks to #NetGalley and #Bookouture for the ARC for #TheirAngelsCry by #ShannonHollinger. I am loving the Chief Maggie Riley series. They are amazing. The characters are relatable, mysteries, murder and just all around crazy. Should be way more than 5stars.
Wow, the mystery of 3 dead people on a mountain and a tiny baby left alive? This was quite the storyline and it got me hooked from the first page.
Chief Maggie is still coming to terms with losing her deputy, Murphy, in the last book. She is still not liked by the townspeople and they are quite suspicious of her. Her new fiance, Steve, and Maggie have secrets they haven't disclosed to each other and then Steve's horrible mother turns up right in the middle of the investigation. Poor Maggie, I really felt for her! And then there was the storm.....
Trying to figure out how these people died and who killed them is, of course, the point of the story. And it is a strange one, indeed. There are lots of secondary characters which come in and out and I wondered how they were all connected but the author does a great job of tying all the loose threads.
Great story, very suspenseful! And that storm, wow, I barely took a breath throughout the whole telling of what happened there.
5 stars from me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture.
4.5⭐
Their Angel's Cry is my first introduction to author Shannon Hollinger and main protagonist Coyote Cove Chief of Police Maggie Riley.
Who starts her day confronted by a dummy hung outside her office and then it gets progressively worse. When a call alerts her to a possible murder scene at the top of Rattlesnake Mountain.
So Maggie takes off with the aid of Brad a part time guide and pot user. Who agrees to take her to the location not knowing what awaits them.
And it's a shocking scene in an isolated area, half a days hike from civilisation lie three dead bodies and two members of the public. Who claim they just stumbled upon them.
Then Maggie whilst guarding the scene and awaiting the M.E, forensics and state police finds something even more disturbing. A baby; blue and barely breathing. Along with a dog that seems to have rescued the child.
But how is the baby related to the three victims? And why did they all end up dead on top of a mountain?
That's what Maggie is determined to find out. But her task is not an easy one. Thanks to no lieutenant, a lack of support from state police and a storm that has cut off the isolated town.
And with great pacing, plenty of twists and turns. Not to mention a killer, I did not see coming. This was a story I could not stop reading. And I really liked the multiple points of view. Which is not something I'm usually a fan off.
I would happily recommend Their Angel's Cry to all.
Maggie is such a great character. And this series is one of the most realistic feeling detective series I've read. The case is emotional and unpredictable. I was immersed in the story and invested in the outcome. I'm excited to read the third book.
Good, suspenseful, fooled me!😲
4.5🌟stars
I was baffled and fooled, in a good way, by this murder mystery that ends up in a fight for survival in a violent blizzard. The change of POV between numerous key characters kept up the suspense and the red herrings that spread the suspicion around. I was totally surprised when the killer reveal came around in a gripping, action-filled climax, and I liked that afterwards, author Shannon Hollinger provides some satisfying closing explanations for why some of the innocent characters were acting so shady.
I also found the balance between the case and the characters' personal dramas kept me engaged. And the arc of medical examiner Erika's transformation: empowered!
This is a new series to me that I want to keep following, not least so I can find out what deep secrets Chief Maggie Riley and her fiance Steve are keeping from each other!
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
Their Angel’s Cry is book 2 in the Chief Maggie Riley series by Shannon Hollinger.
Another fun and exciting story in a new enthralling series.
Plot twists and shocking revelations made for a fast-paced read.
This book is filled with mystery, suspense and shocking moments.
This amazing police procedural series will hook you and keep you entertained for hours.
An intriguing and thrilling crime thriller packed with suspense and so much tension throughout.
The main character is wonderfully developed and such a strong and likable protagonist.
I enjoyed following this wild ride with Chief Maggie Riley.
And I can’t wait for book three.

Holy cow... I have a new obsession and it is the Chief Maggie Riley series. I cannot get enough of this series. Shannon Hollinger has me hook, line and sinker. Maggie Riley is not in a good place in her life. She is the only law enforcement officer left in her town (with no good prospects on the horizon), and the haters in the town are making her life miserable. They have picked on the wrong woman. Maggie Riley does have feelings and is stressed, but she has a backbone of a hero. She cares about justice and making sure those who deserve to pay for their crimes, get their due punishment.
Now she has been called to a weird scene at the top of Rattlesnake Mountain. There are three dead bodies with no apparent cause of death. It is almost as if they just fell over dead. She is already a little creeped out and then she hears rustling in the grass which is when she discovers an injured dog and lo and behold an infant girl wrapped in a blanket. She knows the deaths are not natural, and she suspects there is a predator loose in Coyote Cove who operates like a thief in the night. The cape comes on and Maggie Riley starts working the case.
This book is a mix of dark intrigue, veiled secrets, a town of hostile citizens who blame her for a previous loss and battling men from the state police who do not want her in charge specifically, but they really do not like a woman being in charge. They do not fully understand how lucky they are to have this highly intelligent, driven woman in their corner. This story (like the one before) is told from the points of view of the starring characters in the book. The whole premise of this book and plot line was a little creepy since the cause of death was so strange. The suspense builds with each chapter and then it explodes in the final few chapters. You will suspect everyone at some point and time, and there are plenty of suspects to choose from.. I am officially addicted to this series. Warning - sleep will be impossible once you start this book. You will not be able to put it down.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is a common review for the first two books in this series, a series that promises to become a favorite as it's well done, solid and gripping.
Let's say that Coyote Cove would not my first choice for a hike or a trekking due to the high probability of finding or becoming a corpse. The murder rate in those woods is higher than those of Chicago during the Twenties.
That said I loved what I read as there's a sense of empathy, sorrow and a layer of sadness that matches with the darker side of these story.
Maggie is damaged and flawed: you know something happened, you know there's some dark but you cannot help loving her courage and desire to make things better.
The small town atmosphere, the cast of characters are well done. The author doesn't sugarcoat anything and delivers solid mysteries that will keep you hooked and guessing.
Another intriguing and exciting crime thriller series featuring a strong female detective.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to Bookouture for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Shannon Hollinger is an auto-buy and auto-read author for me! I seriously love every thriller she writes 🖤 The second book in her Chief Maggie Riley series does not disappoint either! This crime thriller series follows Maggie, who is a former Florida detective turn tiny Maine town police chief. In this second book, she is investigating 3 people who have been found dead on Rattlesnake Mountain with no apparent cause of death. Throw in a baby who is still alive and a fierce dog protector and Maggie has her hands full trying to figure out what happened on the mountain.
True to Shannon’s writing style, this book is a fast paced page turner that is full of twists and will leave you guessing about all of the characters’ motives till the very end!
Thank you @bookouture and @netgalley for allowing me to read this book ahead of publication in exchange for my honest review.
A mountain top death scene leaves both Maggie and me mystified.
I kept trying to make the pieces fit in the wrong slots.
The weather description was enough to make me grateful I don’t live in backwoods Maine. Coyote Cove should be called Kook Cove because it attracts its fair share of people who are very questionable.
I laughed at the appearance of one character and the phrase using a shark and a seal.
The real star of the book was a little ball of fur who protected two characters with the ferociousness of a lion. What a stellar puppy!
I’m loving this series!
Gripping psychological thriller. Shocking and twisted. So many suspects and three dead bodies and a baby. Chief Maggie Riley is brave, intelligent and strong woman. Loved Sue and Erika too. Told with multiple points of view makes it more intense.. superbly written.
Thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture, and Shannon Hollinger for this ARC! These thoughts are my own opinions.
I LOVE Shannon’s books! Chief Maggie Riley is a very relatable character. Her twists are impossible to spot, and she really nailed the crime thriller part in this book. When I have to stop reading a thriller when it gets dark out and switch to a cute rom-com, that’s when I know it’s good!
Posting on Goodreads and Instagram stories 7/29, posting on my feed 8/1
This series is absolutely addictive. I finished the first book a couple of weeks ago and could not wait to get back into this world! Maggie is such an interesting main character and it is so FUN to follow her along. She is smart and strong but also vulnerable and very relatable. The case is intriguing and thrilling. The captivating writing is the cherry on top. A new favorite series for sure.
Reading this book straight after the first was a great decision but I know I’m going to have to wait a while now for the third book.
This one was just as good as the first book and it was great to catch up with Chief Maggie Riley again.
Maggie receives a call to say some dead bodies have been found up a mountain so she heads up there to investigate. Three people are found dead and with no obvious signs of death, Maggie calls in help to carry out post mortems.
When she discovers a baby and a dog, she wonders if this can get any stranger. The baby is alive and has been hidden, but by who?
There’s several suspects as it turns out the three people were murdered, but it’s hard to guess which one is guilty, as they are all hiding something.
When a severe snow storm hits Coyote Cove more than one life is in danger and Maggie needs help fast.
Another brilliant book from Shannon Hollinger that I’d highly recommend.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Yet another great storyline in the Maggie Riley detective books. I start another one as soon as I finish one they are so good.
Maggie Riley and Steve are now engaged to be married. When Maggie gets a call to say that 3 bodies have been found up a mountain once she gets there she is mystified on how they died. Yet more puzzling was the baby found nearby and although cold seemed ok. Add the mix of Steve's mother who turns up on her doorstep and doesn't seem that happy about her new to be daughter in law things soon kick off.
Can she find the killer or killers before they strike again.
I am now reading book 3 in the series they are that riveting.
