Their Angel’s Cry is the second book in the Chief Maggie Riley series by Shannon Hollinger.
Maggie is the police chief in a very small town. The towns people are not exactly thrilled to have a woman police chief. This makes for difficult times for Maggie as she is called to a very mysterious scene.
I am starting to understand Maggie and Steve’s relationship a bit more. They both just have soooo many secrets. I hope their relationship withstands all that is going on in their life now as well as their past.
I’m glad that Maggie does have Sue helping her out as well crazy Margot.
I am anxiously waiting to find out more about Maggie and Steves mysterious past.
Looking forward to reading next book in the series!
Many thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Coyote Cove is a place with its fair share of oddballs, and some of them remain decidedly unwilling to welcome police chief Maggie Riley into the fold, especially after what happened with Deputy Murphy in the previous book in this series.
To make matters worse, there are also unresolved tensions between Maggie and her other deputy which leave her somewhat unsupported when it comes to police work in the small rural Maine town where she has relocated - a place, mind you, where moose outnumber people three to one!
After a hiker finds 3 dead bodies at a mountainous location, an investigation is launched. But even stranger than the unexplained discovery of the corpses is the realisation that an infant has been found alive at the same place, without any protection from the elements and with only an injured dog playing the role of its protector.
Maggie will have her work cut out for her - on more than one front - in this, her second major case in the new town. Hollinger has created a world of quirky characters in her Coyote Cove books, and I look forward to the next story in the series.
This book was just as action packed and exciting as the first. There was a lot going on and we learned a little more about some of the secrets Maggie and Steve are hiding, as well as a complicated new crime to solve. I wish Maggie had solved the crime instead of hearing how it happened from the perpetrators POV, but otherwise, I loved this book.
The book summary lays out the primary storyline, which takes place a few months after the last installment. Maggie is now looking to hire another deputy to replace Murphy who was killed in the last installment. Maggie and Steve are now engaged, and they apparently still seem to have a lot of secrets between them. Yeah, that’s a wonderful way to start a marriage – NOT!!!
The book summary lays out the primary storyline so I’m not going to repeat it here. The prologue gives the reader the impression that someone, a lone hiker (no name mentioned), above on a clifftop, saw what happened to the dead people. There is a large cast of characters in this story. Besides Maggie and Steve, there is Brad, a 20-something, and part-time retail clerk/hiking guide. Then there is Cheryl, the hiker who found the dead family and called it in to the authorities, and Glen, another hiker on the mountain. Then there is Erika, a 47yr old forensic pathologist for the state police, and Micah, a 20-something out of towner with a long arrest record.
There is also a secondary storyline where Maggie is dealing with a lot of harassment from the townspeople over the death of Murphy, who was beloved by the townspeople and don’t even get me started on the bozo Maggie interviewed for the job or Officer Miller, the misogynistic jerk from the state police. Then there is the local kid who is a bit of juvenile delinquent. Yeah, they’re not suspicious at all!!! To make matters worse, Steve’s judgmental mother shows up out of the blue and blatantly dislikes and disrespects Maggie.
From pretty early in the story (right around the time the baby was discovered), I already had my suspicions on who the killer could be as well as who the lone hiker was. This is one of the things I love about crime thrillers and murder mysteries, figuring out “whodunit.” I simply can’t help myself. But hey, based on the crazy story Hollinger brought us last time, I’m not going to hold on too tight to any my predictions this early in the story. Hollinger has proven that she can make all kinds of mayhem happen at any time with her crazy twists and turns😊 That’s another thing I like about crime thrillers and murder mysteries.
Most of the story revolves around the investigation of the three people that were murdered and what they were doing up there with a new baby, especially with a storm on the way. Maggie also starts looking at all the outsiders as potential suspects. Once the storm hits – ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE!!! In what I am becoming to believe is typical Hollinger style, there are some crazy twists and turns along with a boatload of heart-pumping, kindle gripping scenes that, once again, kept me up waaayyy past my sensible bedtime, for a work night, finishing the book because I simply could not go to sleep until I knew how it ended.
I’m obsessed with this series now and have already added the third installment to my to-read list. I want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for sending me this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Chief Maggie Riley returns...Another crime, another investigation. This time Maggie is down one lieutenant and is on the search for another. She has to pull all of her resources in for help on this one! Some new characters are introduced and the others are expanded upon. Three dead bodies, a baby left for dead with only a dog as its protector, a future mother in law visiting, and a horrible blizzard bearing down on Cedar Cove all make for a story jam packed with suspense!
Chief Magggie Riley is back again for the second installment of the series and if possible no#2 is even better than #1.
An almighty storm is heading towards Coyote Cove when Maggie recieves a call that the bodies of three family members have been found on Rattlesnake Mountain, a few hours hike from town.
Calling on a local hiker to help her, Maggie finally reaches the site and is startled to find a baby hidden in the undergrowth, being protected by an injured dog. Maggie goes against all her instincts and leaves the bodies in situ so that she can get the baby and pup to safety before the storm hits.
Once again she has no choice but to bring in the Staties (State Police) to help with the investigation. Alongside the Staties Maggie enlists the help of her 'friend' Crime Scene Technician Bridgette and lab volunteer Erika.
After what happened with her then Deputy, Dale *NO SPOILERS* Maggie is still dealing with the small towns distaste for her and is now having to head up the small police unit herself. On top of the stress of working solo, Maggie and Steve still have their secrets.
I've got to say one of the best things about this series is the characters. They are fantastically written in a way that makes them completely relatable - I LOVE Sue!
As the investigation gets underway there seem to be more questions than answers and Maggie has to dig deep to work out just who these people were, how they ended up murdered and why!
Can Maggie catch the killer before the killer catches her?
Massive thanks to netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC.
It's more obvious than ever that Coyote Cove, Maine is more dangerous to humans than South Florida was, at least where Chief Maggie Riley is concerned, She's just found more dead bodies, as well as a puppy but it doesn't seem like anyone wants her to solve the murders, Not the town, not her colleagues, Luckily, she's got a good guy (is her?) in her romantic interest Steve and an ability to figure out puzzles. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC, A good read.
Three unidentified dead bodies left atop a Maine mountain with no obvious cause of death. And a drugged baby guarded by a dog. That's the scene facing Chief Maggie Riley. With little to go on she starts a difficult investigation.
Riley is in a tricky position: the former Florida detective is hated in the small town after the events described in the first book of the series. So she has to watch her back for the locals as well as try to solve the case. And the state police aren't her biggest fans either. Several new characters are also introduced - forensic star Dr Erica Rickey is a great addition to the team. And there are developments in Maggie's personal life too.
Their Angel's Cry is slow paced, the clues difficult to find. It offers an intriguing puzzle to be solved and keeps the attention until the end. The hints about Maggie's past and the reason for her exile to the north continue - perhaps book three will reveal more.
I met Maggie in book 1 and I couldn't not admiring her. Chief of police in a small village, where people do not really like this position being given to a woman. She not only has to prove she can handle it, but she has to fight the baddies as well.
I was hoping the villagers would have accepted her a bit by now, but in book 2 she still is not one of them. Thank God she can count on the support from Sue, the receptionist at the police office and her boyfriend Steve.
This time Maggie is facing another murder case with quite a few people action very strange. Sometimes though, culprits can hide their true nature very well... Maggie has a lot to deal with and the weather gods make it all a lot more difficult and dangerous.
I love the main characters in this series and what I adore about Maggie and Steve is their love for the dogs. People who treat their dogs like they do automatically get a place in my heart.
This author really knows how to entice people to read her next book by dangling a carrot. :) Carrot or not though, I am sold. There is still so much to find out about Maggie and Steve.
So Maggie, I will see you soon in book 3. I can hardly wait. 5 stars
Thank you
This book is great if you enjoy action packed detective stories with lots of characters and points of view. There are lots of potential suspects and we briefly get into the mind of many of them. I enjoyed seeing some of Steve’s background, but we definitely don’t have the full story quite yet. I continue to enjoy Maggie as a character; she is very strong and independent but still leans on others and asks for help. This installment picks up right where the first left off, so I would recommend reading these in order. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to provide my honest review.
I'm super happy I received Their Angel's Cry (Chief Maggie Riley Book 2) by Shannon Hollinger. The story continues with Maggie and her crew. Their Angel's Cry had a believable storyline, with Steve still being a mystery. I loved meeting his mom in this book. The puppy was so cute, and I felt so sorry for it; it was a great "character" addition.
The culprit was a head-spinning reveal, and I did not see that coming.
I enjoy the author's writing style, it's crisp and flows nicely to keep me involved and invested in the storyline and plot.
I would recommend this series, this book, and this author. I cannot wait to read more and see what is in store for the return characters.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Their Angel’s Cry, the second novel to feature Maggie Riley, Chief of Police in the fictional Maine town of Coyote Cove.
When Maggie responds to a call about three dead people on a mountain trail she doesn’t expect to find a baby girl kept alive by a small dog. The mysteries pile up, who are the family, why were they on the mountain and how did they die? When it is discovered that they are not a family Maggie realises that the case is more complicated than she thought and with a storm brewing the killer is still in town.
I thoroughly enjoyed Their Angel’s Cry, which is a tense read with plenty of twists and turns. I wasn’t overly enthusiastic about the first novel in the series as I didn’t like all the hints about Maggie and her fiancé Steve’s separate secrets with no resolution. This novel is more firmly in the present and concentrates most of its attention on the current case, so it’s much more to my taste.
The novel is told from many different points of view without giving away what or who is behind the deaths on the mountain. I’m not always a big fan of this approach, but it works extremely well here. The three main suspects all have secrets and their narratives keep the tension going and really arouse the reader’s curiosity about which one of them or even all of them are involved and why. I was very impressed by the author’s, maybe not misdirection but skill in sowing doubt over a murky situation. I was glued to the pages.
The novel reads well with several developments leading to a showdown in the middle of a blizzard. I was surprised by the reveal and rather less enthusiastic about the cliffhanger at then end, which will take Maggie back to her past in the next novel.
Their Angel’s Cry is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
Thank you NetGalley for the chance to read this advance copy and give my honest review. This is the second book in this series and I have read both novels. Both depict the male officers and other males as chauvinistic pigs and it’s a bit sickening. The main character also falls in love with most every person and animal, which is fine, but is also nauseating. The story lines are great, it’s the awful condescending, horrible male characters (male officers) that make the book intolerable, along with the female lead being tough one page and then a raging mess the next. Remove those, tighten up the story, and it would be great.
this series is so addictive. A family goes up. Rattle Snake Mountain. but don't come down alive. Chief Maggie Riley gets the call a hiker has found them. After what happened with her police partner Maggie is not liked buy the people in the town. but what Maggie find up there is a little shock for her? Steve still keeping his secrets and they get a surprise visitor. Maggie has to catch the killer solo. Another brilliant read from this author will keep you gripped until the end so recommend.
Book Two Chief Maggie Riley facing a couple murdered, that turns into a very tense story.
This is such a thrill to read I an loving reading this series with Maggie as one of a kind what is not to like about her.
This book in a small town is a mystery with lots of twists. loved it
Chief Riley is in for a new, horrible case that seems quite weird. Why has a couple been murdered while hiking, and why is there a baby, not the couples' baby, found alive close by? This small town has probably the dodgiest characters I have ever read about.
Maggie is still trying to convince the locals that a woman, an out-of-towner, can perfectly well function as the Chief. It would be easier if her deputy would fully trust her, but he has problems of his own. So does Maggie. Although, she and Steve are getting serious, and that sadly means they have to open up old wounds and share to each others about their troubled pasts, but not everything.
This is a complex case, but bit by bit the team, and Steve figure it out. The weather does not help, and most of the locals agree with the weather. A great story, with some character growth, entangled with the troubling pasts of several characters, makes this an excellent read!
This was my 1st book on the series and it was definitely a quick and easy read. It leans quite heavily into the fiction side of things and I have no complaints about that what so ever! It's one of those books you just get lost in, up in rural, blizzarcovered town and I absolutely loved the original premise, the really descriptive scenes had me shivering in my house and as always, and dog and baby combo will have me emotionally invested from the start! The characters are well written and complex, they all have theor own stories, problems, povs and personalities and the writing just flows so easily and carriers the reader along. I'm off to download book 1 and can't wait to read more!
Thank you Net Galley and Bookouture for an ARC of this book for an honest review.
This is the second book in the series and I didn’t read the first one. The description was enough to make me think I would be able to understand what was going on. The police chief is a woman who has to do everything herself until she is able to hire someone but those options haven’t been good.
She is caught in a dangerous situation up on a mountain with 3 dead people and a newborn with a dog trying to protect the baby. Many twists and turns in this book to keep you turning those pages. I would recommend this book.
Their Angel's Cry (Chief Maggie Riley Book 2) by Shannon Hollinger Second book in the Chief Maggie Riley Series is tense and fast paced with an abandoned baby and dog, three murders, and an epic blizzard. As in the first book, the story is told from multiple POVs, each voice is unique to the individual. More is learned about Sue and Margot. The addition of an medical examiner, Dr. Ricky adds another layer to the police procedural. Maggie and Steve are still are keeping big secrets from each other. When Steve's Mother comes to visit there is a surprising outcome and some of Steve's secrets come to light. I am more than ready to revisit the town of Coyote Cove Maine and follow more of Maggie's cases.
Thank you to the author, Shannon Hollinger; publisher, Bookouture, and Netgalley for the opportunity to preview the book.
This is the second book in the series about a female chief of police in a rural Maine town. I enjoyed it and it was a quick read but I wasn’t quite as impressed as the first one. There is a fair bit of suspension of disbelief necessary but I like her characters and I’ll keep reading the series.
I read a digital review copy of this book via NetGalley
