This story flows on from the events in Cast in Wisdom, book 15 of the so far 17 book series, The Chronicles of Elantra. In a sense, it is a side story in the series. It is about the university.
It would be very difficult to understand what on earth is going on without having read the earlier books. Sagara does not spoon-feed the reader. This series has some of the densest, richest world-building I have ever read. The characters are complex and nuanced.
We don't see Kaylin in this story. The protagonists are Robin and Raven. They are quite different from Kaylin, the protagonist in the longer series. They are both interesting and likable people. The story is very much "What Is Going On? Why?"
The story is satisfying, and a bit more about this world, the university, and the city is filled in. Interesting characters added. Thank you Netgalley, for providing me with this advanced review copy.
Shards of Glass by Michelle Sagara, not a Kaylin Novel but a great novel in the same universe with another of our favorite character, featuring a lot of familiar faces!
I was totally engrossed while reading this high-fantasy quest with multiple mysteries including true identities that increases in tension as time is running out and the stakes grow ever higher.
Raven tracks her missing friend, Robin, to the Academia, a magical school, lost for centuries, now newly awakened. Robin wants Raven to be a student as well but she's uneasy, especially as students begin turning up murdered. Now it's up to Robin and Raven to figure out who's killing students and why.
Michelle Sagara’s world-building is incredibly detailed and rich. She’s given Elantra millennia of history and backstory that’s run through with political intrigue and the never-ending battle between Good and Evil. I love that she’s slowly revealing the secrets - just enough at a time to leave me wanting more.
Robin is a lot like the main character in the original Elantra stories, Kaylin Neya, - young, orphaned, but resourceful. And with the ability to get befriended by powerful people.
SHARDS OF GLASS is intricately plotted, with personal stories woven into the overarching history of Elantra.
While this isn’t a Kaylin book, it shares a setting and several characters and takes place after Cast in Wisdom.
