Absolutely loved this one! Great read. Loved the characters and the surroundings. The plot was very interesting and kept me reading.
I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook.
I have read from this series and I really enjoyed this novel. I loved all the characters and this is a perfect cozy mystery weekend read.
Em is a doctor from America who has relocated to a small town in Scotland and has found some wonderful friends there. One of them, Angie, is getting married in a beautiful castle. But then Angie’s ex, who wasn’t invited, is found dead, and it seems that someone is trying to stop the wedding, as several guests, including Em, are hurt. There is a blizzard,so no one can come or go—everyone is on edge because they are trapped with a killer. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.
I liked this book but I just couldn't get into the story. I didn't like the writing style but overall the story was good.
I really enjoyed “An American in Scotland”, the first book in Lucy Connelly’s Scottish Isle cozy mystery series, and for the most part I really enjoyed the second book “Death at a Scottish Wedding”. It has many things that I love in a cozy mystery – a strong female lead with strong friends, a murder with plenty of suspects, a blizzard trapping everyone with said killer. While some plot points weren’t that difficult to figure out, there were still a few twists and turns that took me by surprise. However, while I enjoyed the book for the most part, there were still a few things that I didn’t like about the book. While the book is full of strong female characters, they spent an awful lot of time screaming – sometimes at the smallest thing. I get that it was meant to add some humor to the book but it got to the point that it was annoying. Finally, for someone who is supposed to be smart, Em did some things that threatened to make her one of those characters who is Too Stupid To Live.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.
I adored this cozy mystery! The group of characters were fantastic, and I loved the setting. I enjoyed the plot twists and the mystery. It was well paced and well written!
Death at a Scottish Wedding is the second in the Scottish Isle Mystery series and you should definitely read the first one if you haven't before this one. It helps tremendously to know who all the characters are.
Dr. Emilia McRoy has had some time to settle in to small village Scottish life and make some really good friends. One of the locals from Sea Isle is getting married and everyone in town is invited to the three day party at a nearby castle. As soon as everyone arrives, a snowstorm makes sure they are stuck there. This becomes a problem when a body is found in one of the turrets and is revealed to be an ex of the bride!
This was a fun mystery and I love the trapped in a Scottish castle setting. The wedding events that for some reason keep going on, even after the death do make it a more fun read.
Second book in the Scottish Isle Mystery series
Dr. Emilia McRoy is attending the wedding of her friend Angie to Damien at Morrigan Castle. Some guests are arriving early due to a predicted snow storm. While Angie's family is happy about the upcoming nuptials, the same cannot be said for Damien's family.
The dead body discovered in the turret turns out to be Angie's ex - how did he get into the castle? It is discovered that he was killed by drinking anti-freeze. When Angie and friend Mara also get sick, it turns out that they consumed water tainted with anti-freeze. The storm cuts the wedding guests off from the outside world. When Angie is attacked, it becomes evident that someone wants to stop the wedding - the question is who.

Death at a Scottish Wedding by Lucy Connelly is the second book in this series. Although this novel would work as a stand-alone novel, I do think readers would do well to read the first novel in this series.
Death at a Scottish Wedding takes place 3 months after the first novel. One of the biggest problems is the short period of time between events. This is a small town. How often is someone murdered? In spite of the time issue, this novel mostly works but could be far better.
I do believe that Death at a Scottish Wedding would have benefited from some complexity. It is tough when the red herring is also the perp. There are no surprises. Trying to murder Doc Em has already happened in book 1. It shouldn’t be happening in book 2. Hopefully it will not happen in book 3. No person’s head is impervious to the chronic problems of frequent concussions.
It was nice to see these familiar characters again, and while there is probably no requirement that a cozy murder mystery needs to be totally believable, readers would be pleased if there was greater complexity and character development. The possibility of events being real is always what readers hope to find.. Since these characters are fans of Vera, perhaps having Connelly read the Ann Cleeves novels would better explain what I mean. Cleeves is not writing cozy mysteries, but her twists and turns and surprises are what Death at a Scottish Wedding really needs. There is a lot that can be done with the cozy mystery genre, and I would love it if book 3 held a few more surprises than book 2 did, where there were no surprises.
T appreciate that Connelly and Crooked Lane Books sent this ARC for me to read and review. The comments above are my honest opinion. Thank you also to NetGalley for facilitating my efforts to read more novels.
I enjoyed this book, although I liked the 1st one in the series better. This one feels a little claustrophobic which since they’re stuck in a castle for 4 days with a whole wedding party makes sense, the investigating kind of goes around in circles. I did suspect one of the killers, but the description of him made it obvious. Can’t wait to read the next. #DeathataScottishWedding #NetGalley.
This captured my attention enough that a few chapters in I decided to listen to the first book to catch up.
Standard cozy mystery including the tropes: snowed in, forced proximity, starchy cop/future love interest, oblivious to him amateur sleuth, found family.
The found family aspect is nice but repeated too often, we get it! She's never ahd better friends! And there were some loose ends in the mystery but overall enjoyable and will read the next installment.
Eh - not my favourite. Don’t get me wrong, the book wasn’t bad! It just could have been better. The dialogue is so so and Emilia continuously rambles on about how her friends are such good people & she doesn’t STOP. It made for some very repetitive reading.
On the good side though, this book had everything for a good murder mystery: a wedding, a group of people locked in a house with a killer on the loose, a scottish castle!
I think it was a fine read, but I wouldn’t read any other books in this series.
Thank to NetGalley for providing me with an e-book.
I read this first book in this series and found it was a much better book than this one. This one got very repetitive (how many times do I need to be told that Tommy is neuro-divergent and very smart?) and had a few editing errors (got Caleb and Damien's names mixed up.) It also seemed far-fetched that the doctor would have brought all those supplies with her. I loved the setting and the supporting characters. I'll read the next book in the series, but hope its editor does a better job next time.
This is book 2 in a series and I have not read book 1. But that didn't matter as far as the story went so you can read it as a stand-alone. The story of a wedding at a Scottish Castle (great setting), a snow storm and of course a murder.
Emilia McRoy, the main character, is the town doctor and coroner so therefore she has to have some input in the murder of one of at first a mysterious man. The story although not to bad, had a bit of a scattered flow about it and at points became repetitive. But there are a few twists and some suspense along the way, it is a bit of a slow burn, starting slowly and becoming faster paced as the story continues.
A good book but not a favourite of mine. Not a long read but in parts a bit long-winded. All in all it was an okay book to read.
Thank you NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read and review this book, the second in the Scottish Isle mystery series.
Dr Emilia McRoy, an American doctor, is settling in to her new life in Scotland. She is off to attend the wedding of her good friend, Angie, at a local castle. While the party is totally snowed in during the last days of preparation, Emilia finds a dead body in one of the towers. Ewan Campbell, laird, constable, magistrate, and castle owner, must swing into action and solve that crime, along with the possible poisoning of the bride and another of Emilia’s friends. The situation is tense, as the wedding prep continues, while trying to solve the mysteries.
This was a fun read and a nice edition in the new series.
Dr. Em is off to a castles to celebrate a wedding with all her friends when a blizzard closes the roads and isolates the group from the rest of the world. Luckily Em brought medical supplies when it becomes clear that a murderer is among them. Excellent fun!

Emilia is recently from the US but is now the MD and coroner for a small remote Scottish town which is the responsibility of Constable Ewan Campbell who is also a barrister an laird. There are many important friends, but one of them is getting married in the laird's castle nearby. But there's this blizzard, and an avalanche, and of course, the first murder. But the laird and his men are well versed in police procedure, and Dr McRoy is a well seasoned ER physician, so the suspense begins to ratchet up. The characters are so well presented that I feel like I would recognize them in person, and the wintry castle is equally vivid. Excellent read!
I requested and received an EARC from Crooked Lane Books via NetGalley. THANK YOU!

The second book in a cozy mystery series, I enjoyed this Scottish murder mystery, but had not read the first novel prior to this one. Although I read it as a stand-alone, I believe that reading the first one for this series would have helped me navigate the beginning of this installment. I loved the gothic castle setting and that the weather enhanced the mood of the book. The MCs were likeable and there's a lot going on, almost like a contemporary soap opera. I was enamored with all of the Scottish cu!ture included as well. Only downside, some of the text was repetitive. Definitely will go back and read the first in the series.
Net Galley Feedback
This is the second book in the Scottish Isle Mystery series, but it is not quite as good, hence, 4 stars instead of 5 stars. The main reason for the 4-star review is the fact that the entire plot takes place in a Scottish castle. In the first book, I got to know all the people and places because Doctor Emilia walked and biked to all the homes and shops and pubs in the village of Sea Isle. In this book, everyone is already at the castle for a 3-day wedding when the doctor finds a dead body. The investigation begins, but even though the castle is large, there is still not much ground to cover to find the murderer. Even though it is not yet winter, a blizzard makes an obligatory appearance to cause further problems. Together, Emilia and Constable/Laird Ewan figure out what is going on. I was completely lost on this mystery. The two leads are getting friendlier, but he still drives her a little nutty sometimes. I hope the next book in the series returns to the charming town for its murder mystery. Thanks to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for providing an ARC.

Angie is getting married to Damien at one of Ewan's castles. Emilia is outside enjoying the blizzard when she sees flashing lights in one of the turrets. She asks Ewan to go with her to investigate and they find something blocking the door, a dead body. The body turns out to be Angie's ex-boyfriend. There are secrets swirling in the castle. They are stranded by the blizzard with a killer in the castle.
I really enjoyed this book with its mystery and the characters. I had an inkling who the culprit might be. I'm loving this series and can't wait to see what happens next.
