What do you get when you mixed spicy romance, mystery, and monsters? Absolute fun and an enjoyable read. I didn't know it was part of a series, so I felt I had to do some catching up before truly understanding the story and its characters, but it didn't take away from the story at all. I figured out what happen to the childhood friend early on since it seems a little predictable, but it was still enjoyable! Thank you Netgalley for the ARC opportunity!
The blurb was interesting, different and had elements that I typically liked. So, I went for it.
I really wanted to love it for the mystery, romance, spice and the supernatural. BUT, it just did not hit the mark like I hoped it would. It certainly wasn’t bad at all. I did like the book, it just felt a little short at points where I basically kept going to just try and finish the book.
There was a lot crammed into this book. If you took out a few elements it would have been an easier read and less chaotic. There was too much in terms of cases and her own personal stuff to juggle together. As a main character, Elisabeth was simply just okay and at times confusing. Her ability to decide didn’t go well as someone who should be a detective. I’d like to have seen some sharp wits about her.
Overall, the overwhelming amount of stuff going on led to a lot of confusing moments. The main character just was not fitting the part and really, it got to the point where the book was just giving me such a horrible headache that I had to step away from it. Not a winner for me, but maybe for someone else.
Supernatural detectives story, maybe not for me, but it was confusing sometimes, I couldn't empathize with the characters either.
This story was hard to follow and lacked detailed. Characters were hard to follow at times and I lost interest. I would be willing to try more if the author writes more to this story
I was confused for most of the book. I didn't like the FMC and lots of things and her motives didn't make any sense to me. The story tried to be too many things at once and I feel like either just focussing on the urban mystery aspect or the urban romance.
Unfortunately this wasn't a book for me.
Thank you netgalley for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really struggled through this book. I think it's a good first draft, but it needs heavily edited. It's too long for the story, and there's a lot going on, but not a lot actually happens. Because there is so much going on, some story lines get lost and forgotten. It feels like the author got to the end of the story and realized she was almost to her maximum word count and just ended everything in a rush. There were a lot of things that didn't make sense and originally I put that off as part of jumping partway into a series, but I really think it was just bad writing.
Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC.
Dead for Rights is a supernatural story following a detective who’s taken on too many cases at once. There’s too much going on in this book overall, too many storylines and side plots. But I also disliked the narrator as I got or know her more.
The main plot line is interesting but could have used more detail Overall the book was fine but nothing to write home about.
This was quite the mix of mystery of sexy romance, and I really enjoyed reading it. It is part of a series, and I think I'd have a better understanding of the characters if I'd read the previous books. That said, I thought Graves did a great job of building tension, and threading in multiple mysteries with Elisabeth's personal life to keep your interest piqued. The story moves along fairly smoothly, and overall I enjoyed reading it. I'll definitely need to check out the other books in the series I think.
This book had lots of action. There were vampire intrigue, illegal activities and people to help. This is book number four. I need to go read the others to follow the storyline. I really enjoyed the writing as well as the characters.
Vamps, Witches and Weres, oh my! When a beloved childhood star from the past is thought to be haunting her old home, Elizabeth is called in to see what she can figure out. Was there some bad juju behind her disappearance or something even more sinister? Then there’s a young cancer patient who is dying, can Elizabeth help him live on? Even if it’s not quite ethical? So much going on and it all fits together well.
This was my first book by this author and in this series and I rather enjoyed it, once I got the lay of the supernatural land that makes up their world. I’m going to read more int his series and added it to my must read list.
This is the fourth book in the Elisabeth Hicks witch detective series. Oh my this book was absolutely amazing. I can't stop thinking about it! The spice was oh so good. Warning this is very descriptive erotic spicy scenes. I love love love this spellbinding fantasy series!! I am totally obsessed with Elisabeth Hicks and can't wait to read the next book!!!
I just reviewed Dead for Rights by Rachel Graves. #DeadforRights #NetGalley

I just finished "Dead for Rights" and I like it very much.
It's the fourth book of the Elisabeth Hicks, Witch Detective series by Rachel Graves. I didn't read the other books, so I needed a little time to understand who the different characters are and what is going on. But as soon as I understood all these things, I loved the mixture of witchcraft, vampires and werewolves and that all set in the real world.
There is action, but also a lot of detective work and looking for some clues.
In my opinion, this book is definitely worth reading but I woud advice someone to start at the beginning of the series. I can't say, how good the other books are, but I think they are very good depending on "Dead for Rights".
i have mixed feelings about this one. i didn’t hate it, but also didn’t completely love it either. i know that it is part of series (which i have not read) so starting off, i was pretty confused as to who all of the characters are and putting everything together that occurred prior to this book.
i think there was a lot of things going on storyline wise, and it was somewhat difficult to keep up with all of them and carry out all of the plot focuses in lots of detail. there were several portions of mysteries which elisabeth our fmc, was trying to solve. one about a sick young boy, another about a forgotten young film star who disappeared, and smaller things like trying to figure out her life and where she wants to be. as the story continues on, one thing may be solved and then never spoken of again.
i also have conflicting feelings about elisabeth, the fmc. she has a fear of vampires, but then is best friends with one? her family and relationship also seemed as though they were gonna play more important roles than they did. especially her boyfriend, ted. he felt honestly kind of neglected by her in a sense that he didn’t really get much attention which is sad. also, she’s supposed to be a detective but doesn’t seem very smart?? idk. otherwise, she seems like a nice person who cares about her loved ones a lot but struggles to make choices and juggle everything going on in her life, simply taking on more than she can handle.
this book does a good job though of keeping things interesting, but doesn’t have major plot twists or tons romance aspects for those who love that type of book. i would have loved for there to have been more development in terms of elisabeth and ted’s relationship if i’m being honest. also, more of the characters’ backstories which could possibly be in other books but are only briefly mentioned in this one. the characters are all pretty cool though which i enjoyed, aside from not knowing much about them.
If you like the "modern day/supernatural beings/woman detective/supportive found family/weird supernatural crimes" genre (Anita Blake, Kate Daniels, Mercy Thompson) then you will enjoy this series! I was a little worried since I started with book four, but I caught up quickly. Fast-paced, action packed, the story draws you in and keeps you reading. Recommended! (Now to go back and read books 1-3!)
A big thank you to NetGalley andf Amazon KDP/Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America for the eARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is part of a series, and I have not read the others. It reads okay as a stand alone, but to know more about the characters you might want to read them in order. This is pretty convoluted, a lot of twists and turns. It is interesting to pay attention to how long it takes to be given the main characters name. It is Elisabeth (Lizabeth) other variations. Her love interest is Ted. The cast of characters is fun and different. Jo and LaRue are both vampires. The mystery has a good resolution. The main character tries to do the right thing by her moral compass. I found this interesting and I would like to read the others in this series, and I would recomment to anyone wanting to try a paranormal mystery with some minor romance. 3.5 stars
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me access to this arc.
4 stars / 5 stars
Things I loved:
Enough information was included to understand the book without reading the other books in the series.
Engaging plot and loved the characters
I would love to read the other books by this author now!!
DNF, I couldn't get over the MC, I found her so annoying. I also didn't really get the world as there was no worldbuilding in this so it just left me a bit confused for a fantasy novel.
I very much enjoyed this book. It's obviously a continuation of a series, which I haven't read, but the author did a great job of including enough information about the characters and the world that I wasn't lost and enjoyed the book as a story by itself. I like that each of the characters had flaws and virtues instead of being superheroes. The best thing I can say is I now want to read more of the author's work!
Uh...this definitely had a lot going on for it. The premise was... interesting but I feel like there were too many elements in this for me to properly enjoy it. It wanted to be so many things but it under delivered.
I really hate it when I “forget” about an author and then find another in the series and wonder how I did that. This is one such author. I love Elisabeth, Ted (Edward), Gina, Jeremy…heck all the characters. They are just so interesting and real, and I mean real as like they have faults and do the wrong thing just like us. This was a very engaging plot about an old child star who disappeared, Jo wanting to adopt, and a dying boy. I loved how this author just merges all the cases just like a real detective would have to do, and the results of those will have far-reaching consequences. I am hoping that a plan which Garcia came up with will mean a lot more books since I just absolutely, positively love this series. Well-written, totally engaging plot, and a wonderful way to spend a few hours. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
