Love this series and loved this addition. Really makes the story of Anne accessible for young readers and I just adore the illustrations.
I am of the opinion that no childhood is complete without an acquaintance with Anne Shirley and I am so glad that author Kallie George has made this spunky heroine accessible to younger readers through this 5th chapter book in a series inspired by L.M. Montgomery's original Anne of Green Gables. In reading about the illustrator, Abigail Halpin, I was pleased to find out that she has been inspired by Tasha Tudor--ah, a kindred spirit (Tudor is a favorite illustrator of mine).
The author takes a few stories from Montgomery's pages, elaborates on them, and brings them to life for younger audiences. Halpin's illustrations are a wonderful complement to the story helping children envision the action and each character. I especially liked that both Marilla and Matthew had moments to shine in this chapter book. This would be a wonderful book to help entertain younger family members while the original series is read aloud. The bright and lively illustrations will help bring Anne's adventures to life for any age. Don't miss this delightful introduction to one of literature's most beloved characters!

Oh how I love Anne!! This would be a great read aloud or for a child who wants to start reading about Anne of Green Gables! The illustrations are so perfect for the time period!
“Anne Dares” - (5 Stars) (Pub Date:10/17/2023) is the fifth book in an early chapter series based loosely on key plot points and characters from Anne of Green Gables. This adaptation by Kallie George stays true to the spirit of the source story. The illustrations by Abigail Halpin add original art to a well known and loved character.
Good Things: The adaptation uses key quotes and plot lines from the original Anne of Green Gables to tell the boiled down version of the “Anne Takes A Dare” the “Anne’s First Pretty Dress” storylines while also appropriately simplifying the concepts of bravery for the early chapter book audience. The art is stylistically simple, but I appreciated the new versioning and spirit of the art for a story that’s been adapted and adapted again, over the last century.
Final Thoughts: I love Anne and have always resented the reimagining of her story for younger audiences, not because I don’t think younger children can or should have access to her story, but because I’m a bit of a purist about the content, I want readers to come to the work as it was originally written. But as I’ve gotten older I realize that earlier entry points to good literature can only help bring the story to more and more readers. This adaptation not only does the original justice, it also very subtly teaches young readers how to make connections in stories, that more mature readers need to enjoy more complex content. Teaching kids how to be good readers is an amazing extra for this book. 100% would buy for the 4-8yo early chapter reader.

This is the newest, (and fifth) of Kallie George’s books about Anne (of Green Gables). Each is a beautifully illustrated chapter book for young readers. They are all true to the spirit of the originals and, hopefully, will lead kids to the those titles.
This time, several incidents from Montgomery’s story, are retold. It is the part of the book when Anne is invited to a party at the home of her very best friend, Diana. But, of course, troubles generally follow Anne, as they do here. What happens when a mean girl provokes Anne? What are the consequences of a very daring dare? Will Anne be able to right things, stay with Matthew and Marilla and move on to a new and happy experience? Young readers will enjoy finding out.
This is another delightful retelling featuring Anne of Green Gables. I most definitely recommend it and the entire series. They could make a perfect holiday gift.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada-Tundra for this title. All opinions are my own.
I love this Anne of Green Gables series by Kallie George. The art is beautiful and the stories are very accessible for young readers. I loved Anne of Green Gables as a child and would have adored these books. I recommend these to all my customers
Cute addition to this series adapting Anne of Green Gables for young readers. If you know the original, you'll like seeing the familiar anecdotes (Anne-ecdotes?) alongside lovely illustrations.
Thanks to Penguin Random House Canada for providing a DRC!
I think this is my favorite volume so far. The illustrations are beautiful and so rich in details. The graphic work is flawless. This volume centers on the girls playing the dare game and Anne getting injured. It's such a cute collection!
I rated this 5 stars which feels a bit weird since I feel like the book is basically sniping out interesting and memorable portions of the original Anne of Green Gables. I'm not sure if it's word for word as I haven't checked but it was all very familiar while also feeling a bit "modern" in some phrasing. It veers a little, little bit on the "preachy" side as the idea of dares - acceptable and not - is explored. This is certainly a relevant pursuit for young readers.
As a book for young readers, I think it's well done to take a beloved story and refresh it in a way that is accessible for younger readers. The illustrations are well done and would be a major draw to younger readers.
5 stars not because I loved it as much as the original Anne but because I see the way it could spark interest in the series with today's young readers. That cover certainly helps too!
I received a dARC from the publisher via Netgalley. This is my honest review.
This adapted take on Anne of Green Gables is absolutely adorable. My seven year old daughter has fallen in love with Anne. She has read the entire series so far, and sat down to read this new book in one sitting. As a mom, I love that she has access to wholesome classics as an independent reader and that she is falling in love with characters that she can’t wait to read more about. The illustrations are absolutely amazing, and this one is perfect to set aside for Christmas. We will definitely be purchasing this book for our shelf once it comes out. We read this book preview through NetGalley in exchange for a review.
I really love this series and the new volume does not disappoint! The illustrations are gorgeous and the bite-size pieces of the original story hold their own weight. I loved seeing the end-paper design for the finished copy in the digital version! The finished product is always a work of art in this series and I cannot wait to add it to my collection.
This is another episodic retelling from Anne of Green Gables. It is part of a chapter book series, but it also works as a standalone, and it is very charming. The illustrations are cute, and the book introduces young readers to Anne's life and her impulsive, imaginative personality. I like how the story shows that Anne can be daring in both reckless and positive ways.
The book conveys good messages while still being subtle about them, and it's quite entertaining. This will appeal to many Anne fans, and it's a great way to introduce early readers to this character, hopefully whetting their appetite to read the original books once they're capable.
Another fun entry to this episodic retelling of Anne of Green Gables for younger children. I'm always amazed at how Kallie George manages to imbue the essence of Anne in an attractive and interesting series for early readers. I finally got my niece to start reading the books and she adores them!
With plenty of gorgeous illustrations (featuring ethnically diverse characters! Such a nice touch!), short sentences, plenty of action, Anne's spunky personality, and a great message delivered with just the right amount of didacticism, I always recommend these books.
I loved the contrast of seeing Anne being daring in a bad way but ultimately learning to be daring in a positive way. Anne always grows and learns something important in every bite-sized book! This is one is tied with Anne's School Days as my favourite of the series so far.
Thank you so much, NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for providing this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
My kids and I love Anne of Green Gables. She’s such an imaginative character. We’ve now read all 5 books in this series and have loved every single one. This one did not disappoint. It is so beautifully illustrated and well written. It brings the stories of Anne of Green Gables and makes them accessible for a younger audience. We can’t wait to read more of these beautiful stories about Anne of Green Gables.
Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for the opportunity to review this book prior to publication.
As a huge fan of Anne of Green Gables, I try to read any and all adaptions that I come across. Anne Dares stays true to the story and has adorable illustrations. I would be proud to share this book with a child I love. As an adult collector, I can honestly say I enjoyed it and will purchase this book for my collection.
I received an advanced copy from NetGalley in exchange for a review, and opinions are my own.
I recieved this book from Net Galley to give my honest feedback. I really enjoyed this book. As a fan of "Anne of Green Gables" I was very happy to see and review this book. The book's illustrations are lovely and really capture the love of nature and the environmental beauty that Anne loves so dearly. The story was good, kept with the original story, and gave a view of Anne's curiosity and sometimes mischieveous behavior. I can see this beautiful picture book being a gateway to early readers into "Anne of Green Gables" and a sentimental book for those who already love the story. I highly suggest this book for those who love Anne and their children. Thank you for allowing me to read this book.
Anne Dares is a short chapter book based on Anne of Green Gables. It would be perfect for an early reader or to get someone interested in the series. It’s about the roof scene!
I love Anne of Green Gables and this was such a sweet story. The characters always warm my heart, I loved the short length, and the illustrations were STUNNING! Such a beautiful story.
As a lover of all things Anne of Green Gables sine I was a child, I absolutely love this series of books for young readers. Anne Dares incorporates events from the original novel in an age appropriate way for children, along with beautiful pictures. I highly recommend this series to all young readers!
I love this series and my daughters adore it just as much. The Anne of Green Gables story retold in a young readers chapter book with gorgeous illustration helps a new generation truly fall for Anne and her tenacious ways.
In Anne Dares, we get to see Anne take on Josie Pyre’s dare of walking along the roof of Diana’s home and the fallout/consequences from that. We also see her date for that glorious puff sleeved dress.
We cannot wait to add this to our home library!
