A book to celebrate differences. My mom, who has always said “Life is too short to spend time matching socks” would love this book!
A cute book showcasing that it’s okay to not “fit in” because there is always a time and place in this world you are and will be needed. This book emphasizes the importance of friendships and accepting yourself. You are important no matter who you are or your friends are. The world needs you around
I love this book! I think that having a book about being different, fitting in, and acceptance through mittens is such a clever way to reach children. I think that a lot of the time kids need clever and fun ways to learn new things. I also think this book's message about being true to yourself is also such an important thing. I will definitely read this to my son!
Thank you NetGalley, Penguin Random House Canada, and Tundra Books for this cute little arc!
5/5 stars!
This book was cute and cozy! A great way to show how even if you don't look like everyone else you're still fantastic in your own unique way! It would have been nice if at the end they found Other Dotty, but it was still cute! I loved the art style, it very much looks like knitted and felt fabrics and I just loved that!
What an adorable book! I really can't fault anything about it.
Cute illustrations, great messages about acceptance, kindness, and being who you are.
I enjoyed the illustrations in this story and think that it had good intentions surrounding the concept of being the 'odd one out' and celebrating differences. I was confused by the loss of one of the pink mittens, and think that for sensitive readers this aspect of the story could be considered scary or sad. Pink mitten (who wasn't very kind) is dropped in the snow and forgotten, never to be seen or heard from again. When one of the striped mittens is recovered from under the couch he tells the others about his time in what is called a 'scary story' and was clearly impacted by his time being lost. If being forgotten under a dusty couch is considered scary, I assume that being left out in the cold and potentially being buried under snowfall would be equally as scary if not more so. If the mittens are sentient, this seemed like a bit of a plot hole that observant and curious minds will pick up on.
This was a really sweet story, and would make a great winter read for PK-3rd grade ages kids. I especially enjoyed the ending with the socks, and so did my kids! I wasn't a huge fan of the art style, but kids will enjoy the pictures and story just fine.
I have already ordered this book for my classroom! I think the premise and story are adorable! I loved the point of view of the mittens and one always being left out. I think kids would find this story enjoyable.
This was just okay. Pictures were not my vibe. And the story was short. Probably something my daughter would not read.
Thanks @netgalley for the eARC!
A picture book about belonging, yearning to belong, and learning to share.
When a little girl has matched and mismatched mittens, one is always left out.
What can be done about it?
I thought this book was adorable. It really has a sweet message behind it and I definitely can see the children at my library loving this book.
An adorable read about a mitten who's match is lost and feels left out. When another mitten goes missing it learns that there are a lot of missing mittens and that you don't have to be just like anyone else to be friends and have fun.
A great book to teach Littles about accepting others, despite their looks.
The Three Little Mittens by Linda Bailey - 5/5
Children's Fiction
The Three Little Mittens is such an adorable book, I am in awe of it. I love the message behind this story and truly believe every child should learn this lesson about kind to others.
A lone mitten is pushed away by a matching pair for being different. I read this story with my young children and was pleasantly surprised by how they reacted. They didn't understand why the Mitten being different mattered and that warmed my heart.
Available for purchase October 2023.

The illustrations are whimsical drawing your eyes to color and movement. Even the girl’s hair seems to have a life of its own. It is a fun read that can be understood from a young age and still be of interest to older elementary children by applying the life lesson. There are pages that don’t follow the cadence of the story, so it can trip you up, but it’s subtle. I would recommend this one for anyone’s personal or public library.
Loved the concept and the artwork. The basis of not having to match and be perfect is right up our alley. We can all be different and special in our own way.
What do you do when you are the "odd mitten out?" This fun story explains the life of the unmatched mitten being left alone in a pocket, until one day the owner of the mittens, a little girl, shares that it's okay to be unmatched! This charming story unleashes the imagination and tender heart of every child (and adult) with a subtle message of "it's okay to just be yourself." The illustrations are just as soft as warm mittens too.
This was a fun story about being unique and one of a kind! The illustrations really add to the experience. I think this would be a fun and relatable book to add to my classroom library.
This is such a fun story and the adorable illustrations really enhanced the experience! It’s a cute tale of how being unique and focusing on yourself and allowing differences to be equal, we can make the world a more fun place! Can’t wait to add this to our home library!
Who hasn't lost a mitten? It's uncomfortable being the odd one out and in this cute children's story, our reader can explore how a single mitten who feels left out, changes the dynamic of always having to fit in. Why do you have to have matching socks and is it ok to wear two different mittens if they don't match? When the character in this book ignores the matching rules, life becomes more colorful and exciting. A cute story with a cute message for younger readers.
An adorable little tale that speaks to what happens when you’re the odd one left out. It should never be the end of the world and this book does well to show how given time and an opportunity, you can get along with anyone. There is no need to match like for like and I love that message for kids. Celebrate being unique by mismatching and know you will still be loved for it. :)
