I really enjoyed this book. It is the second book I’ve read by this author. She is able to weave magic, intrigue and wonderful storytelling to make it a great read.
Adrienne Young is one of my favorite writers ever. She can do no wrong as evident with this beautiful masterpiece of a novel. This immersive book had everything I could want in its pages: mystery, suspense, romance, time travel, and heartbreak. I felt every emotion while reading this and it truly drew me in and had me hooked. I thoroughly enjoyed the elements of fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, and romance and this book felt so atmospheric. Her writing transported me to the countryside of Jasper, NC, and captured all my attention. I truly felt like I was there with the FMC walking in her shoes. I even loved that our girl June was a bit unreliable as she spirals through her grief, emotions, and mental battles. This book kept me on my toes, wanting more, and once I started it, I couldn't stop thinking about it. Highly recommend to my friends and family and this is one I'll be reading again multiple times. Magical realism is my new favorite genre thanks to Young!!
Have you ever put off reading a book because you know you’re going to love it with every fiber of your being, but you already feel a sense of sadness for when it’ll be over?
That was this book for me. This was my most anticipated read for 2023. I kept delaying reading it, because I knew it would be over as soon as I began.
I was on the verge of tears as I was reading (and definitely shed tears at the end) simply because I loved it so much. I was fully immersed in this story. There is mystery, a timeless romance, an atmospheric and nostalgic setting, magical realism, mind bending concepts, and complex family dynamics. Truly one of the most unique stories I’ve read. It’s best if you go into this book completely blind.
Adrienne Young has become one of my favorite authors over the last year. If I’m reading one of her books, I can always expect to feel all the feels, be swept away by beautifully atmospheric writing, fall in love with the characters, and probably shed a few tears. Something about her stories hit me at my core and speak to my soul. June Farrow was no exception. These soul-stirring and emotion-evoking stories are the ones I crave. Books like this are why I love reading. I’ll be thinking about this book for a long time.
Another inventive and entertaining tale by Adrienne Young! Even though keeping up with the different time periods was somewhat confusing, I thoroughly enjoyed it and admire the author for such a unique plot. My thanks to the publisher for providing a review copy via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
Say hello to the perfect fall read! Immersive, captivating, and atmospheric! I was swept away in a story with a touch of magic, romance, mystery, family relationships, historical/contemporary elements, and fall vibes.
I loved the setting of the NC mountains, and descriptions and all the Farrow women! I wanted to simultaneously devour and savor this one! I loved her lyrical writing and thought this book is so special.
Fans of Spells for Forgetting, Addie LaRue, Where the Crawdad’s Sings, and Shea Ernshaw’s books will love this one!
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group, Delacorte Press for an ARC of this book.
This book messed with my head more than any other I’ve ever read. I really am struggling to put sentences together after finishing it. This was the first book by Adrienne Young I’ve read and her writing is absolutely breath-taking. It hit me so deeply. Despite my confusion throughout the book and having to reread some parts multiple times to make sure I understood them, I’m so impressed with how connected the story became. The ending truly took me by surprise and the suspense build up throughout the book was incredible.
I've read and loved other books by Adrienne Young, but the tone here was so unexpectedly adult and emotional. June Farrow has lived a pretty lonely life at her grandmother's quaint farm in the Blue Ridge Mountains. When June's gran passes away, June is forced to confront the secret she's been keeping from her few close friends: the signs of mental illness that she has looked for her whole life are already affecting her. June's investigation into her family's secrets unfolds into an incredible love story that shows how far people will go for their friends, their children, their spouses, their family.
Thank you netgalley for the eARC!
"The Unmaking of June Farrow" by Adrienne Young is the literary equivalent of hitting the jackpot after eagerly anticipating a sequel to a stellar debut – talk about a satisfying encore. After being utterly captivated by Young's adult debut, "Spells for Forgetting," I had high hopes for this one. Spoiler alert: it exceeded expectations, snagging a solid five stars in my book.
The writing style was a seamless blend of elegance and excitement. The narrative unfolds effortlessly, drawing readers into the world of June Farrow with a magnetic charm. The anticipation I felt after Spells for Forgetting was not in vain; Adrienne Young manages to maintain her storytelling magic, I was hooked from the very beginning!
The characters are the true gems of this literary journey. June Farrow is a protagonist you can't help but root for, and Young's ability to breathe life into her creations is unparalleled.
It's the kind of book that leaves you with a sense of fulfillment, despite the circumstances, and a genuine appreciation for Adrienne Young's storytelling prowess.
This author is such an absolute favorite of mine. While I didn't fully connect with this one, I still loved her writing style. The story was easy to follow and I was captivated by the settings. The characters weren't my favorite but I think that was a personal problem. I think readers will fall in love with this book.
I found the whole story so engaging. The time travel piece can sometimes be confusing but it was done so well in this book. I liked the mystery that also underlined the story.
Adrienne Young people!! Loved the magical realism of this book — wish I could relive my reading experience in this fictional world for the first time again. Making choices, testing the hands of fate… deciding to walk through the door… choosing which version of life to live. So so many what ifs. I adored this book and think everyone should read it.
genre-bending, spellbinding, and so beautiful - what a well-crafted story full of romance, mystery, and magic!
What a magical, cozy, mysterious read this was! I really enjoyed this book, a lot. Being from North Carolina, the setting automatically had me enthralled - I am a huge fan of the NC mountains! This book is perfectly atmospheric and unsettling, in all the best ways. I loved the family dynamics and characters! I did have a hard time understanding the timelines for all of the time travel. I ended up giving up on trying to have it all down and enjoyed the story much more when I let it go. I definitely recommend this one for anyone who loves mysteries and magical realism.
I loved this one. It was a very unique story, and I was very emotionally invested by the end. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys magical realism or a murder mystery. Bonus points if you like both!
I received an advance copy. All thoughts are my own.
This story really messed with my brain, trying to follow the timeline and the characters’ very complicated relationships. But the story was really beautiful, and the bonds between the characters were strong. This was an exploration of family, memories, and choices with a very satisfying ending.
I was not expecting to like this book as much as I did! I loved the unique take on time travel and that it really makes you think. The whole book was just beautiful. I loved the relationships between the Farrow women and as much as I am a fan of this being a standalone, I also love the idea of having more stories with the Farrows. My favourite Adrienne Young book yet.
Usually I love Adrienne Young books.. but this one I didn't really start to really enjoy until about 60% of the way in. It was slow at first and the time line and explanations of the time jumping was just really really confusing which didn't make it enjoyable at all. But once I got over half way through the book I found myself enjoying the plot more and all of the twist and turns that Adrienne wove in were super good! And the end of the book.. just truly beautiful, love really does conquer all! If you like time travel, romance and mystery definitely check it out!
I truly struggled with coming back to reality after I finished reading this book. I'm pretty sure that I just stared at my kindle until I could register that it was over. This is very much a rambling review, so I am sorry. I am just amazed at this book.
Adrienne Young somehow blows me away with every new book. The Unmaking of June Farrow is so beautifully written, almost heartbreakingly so. Adrienne's imagination and her way with her words are something else. I really cannot explain it. There is something about her books that just keeps me reading, keeps me wanting more, and makes me not want to put the book down at all.
The unmaking of June Farrow is such a unique read that I fell in love with very quickly From the time travel and the historical small town full of secrets and mystery to the romance and the many many sacrifices, I was so immersed in following June's story as well as the other characters that I was reading this until midnight; reality did not exist.
This is very much a story that will stick with me for a very, very long time. It's barely been 24 hours since I finished the book, and it's the only thing I have been able to think about, and I had plans to read other books today.
Thank you so much to the publishers and Netgalley for allowing me to have this e-arc
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for giving me a free eARC in exchange for an honest review.
4.5 stars! I am such a fan of the way Adrienne Young writes YA, and I loved my first adult book from her. In the town of Jasper near the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Farrow women are cursed with a descending madness that June Farrow cannot explain. “Every woman in the Farrow family was different, but the end was always the same.” “We were the limbs of a broken tree with poisoned roots.” June is determined to be the last Farrow, but an opportunity to solve her mother’s disappearance and change her fate sends her into the unknown.
The writing in this is so stunning and I loved the mystery and romance woven into this story. I love when a book can be both heavy on the vibes and atmosphere of the story and still have such an intriguing and engaging plot; I’ve truly not read a story like this before, it was so beautiful!
I’m in tears. Can you imagine what it would be like to exist in two different timelines, one in which you have a family and you can’t remember any of it? Or having to make a choice to break the family curse or have children?
What an amazing and beautiful story of the complexity of life. Despite being a magical fantasy, I think the themes of family and how fragile life is reign true in the real world.
I understand that people might not like this novel because of how the extensive and detailed plot sometimes led to questions and confusion. But I honestly think that leaving some things open ended added to the brilliance of the writing.
Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me access to this novel!
I will never stop recommending this book until my dying day.
