The Unmaking of June Farrow is a paranormal novel about a family of women cursed with hallucinations. The main character is determined to end her family line with herself and keep it from ruining more lives.
June Farrow was abandoned by her mother as a baby and raised by her grandmother. After her grandmother dies she decides to delve deeper into the family curse that has afflicted each generation with auditory and visual hallucinations. When her grandmother leaves her a picture of her mother with a man that’s been dead for seventy years she realizes that there is more to the curse than just the unraveling of the mind and that she will have to travel through time and space to end the curse of the Farrow women.
The Unmaking of June Farrow is novel that shows what it looks like to protect the people you love despite the personal cost. There is both a murder mystery and love story at its center which kept me turning the pages. Although I can’t say I understood every bit of how the curse worked and the timelines I appreciate the work that Adrienne Young put into the storytelling.
I recommend this one to readers that enjoy stories about love, family, mystery and a touch of the paranormal.
Waiting for the sickness that overtakes all the Farrow women, June Farrow resolutely deals with the death of her beloved grandmother. All the while the visions, the scents in air and whispering of her name intensify. What is the mystery, the true curse of the Farrow women. Beautifully written and masterfully crafted to blow your mind. Rounding up from 4.5 stars.
Adrienne Young writes books that feel so tangibly real. I’m always sucked in and feel like I’m inside the book with her characters.
June knows that the women in her family are cursed, and she has vowed that the curse will end with her.
For the past year, she’s been keeping track of her hallucinations, knowing that this is how it all starts.
But then a mystery, with an impossible answer, consumes her days, and leads her to a life she never dared dream of.
Can she continue to solve the mystery, guard her heart, and decide her fate before the red door shows up again?
*I haven’t read a book this fast in a long time, THANK YOU Adrienne!!
This book was absolutely magnificent. This truly had such a deep, emotional theme about the things we are afraid let ourselves feel & the things we will do for the ones we love. This is going to be one of those books that truly sits with me for a long while. This book had such a well-written female main character who evolves so much throughout this story. I absolutely loved June & seeing her journey unfold as she discovered so much about herself. I don’t want to give anything away, but just know that this book will definitely pull at your heart. This is my second book by this author & I can’t wait to dive into more. There are some tough things mentioned in this book so please check any content warnings. I highly recommend this.
This story stole my heart with its heartbreaking yet hopeful narrative about transcendent love. As the last Farrow woman cursed in a lineage plagued by madness, June's journey gripped me from the start. Adrienne Young's seamless blend of fantasy, mystery, and sci-fi whisked me into a world where time travel and family secrets collide. June's struggle to break the family curse, understand her mother's disappearance, and navigate unexpected love resonated deeply. Young's storytelling prowess shines as she weaves intricate plots and surprising twists, leaving me in awe. Themes of identity, sacrifice, and the power of familial bonds added depth to this emotionally charged tale. This book is an enchanting masterpiece, setting a new standard for the genre.
This book takes "living in the past" to a new level. The Unmaking of June Farrow kept me wondering what would happen next. Family curses, mystical doors, and plenty of drama await those who open the cover of this book and pass through the doorway into yesterday. Thanks to author Adrienne Young, Random House Publishing Group, and NetGalley. I received a complimentary copy of this ebook. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
While a little slow to start, this book is beautiful and painful and perfect. The Unmaking of June Farrow is the soul gripping story of a woman who’s a part a cursed family. The women of the Farrow line will inevitably go mad, for as many generations as anyone can remember this has remained true. But June is determined to break this curse one way or another.
Reading this book had me stressed just about the entire time, but the resolution of conflict and questions was so worth the hair gripping exasperation. I read this story as an ARC from NetGalley and have already bought a physical copy so that I can read, and reread the story.
I absolutely recommend this book for lovers of The Invisible Life of Addie Larue or anything remotely similar to it. This story is magical and real in the most fantastical way possible. It’s perfect.
I was so enthusiastic at the beginning of this book. It hooked me immediately and makes it easy to develop strong empathy for June. Getting to know the town, farm, and people that surround her is a delight and page turning. Unfortunately, about 2/3rds of the way through the story loses its way. The plot holes get progressively bigger, usually explained away by a cheap line of text (ie: all the unsaid things were in his face… etc etc). While the resolution of the mystery is satisfying, all the characters involved in the second half of the book are thin and their lack of development takes away so much from our (the reader’s) understanding of June’s decision making.
Then there are two things that really bothered me: 1) this book centers a very antiquated feminism. It consistently equates marriage and love with motherhood, implying having a child is the only path forward for a married woman. It also plays right into the hands of, how could a MOTHER, leave her child. Why, when men are absent to they get empathy?
2) I’m not sure I’ve read a book with literally NO diversity at all. All main characters are straight, cis, white people. It hadn’t occurred to me that would be something that really bothered me, until I actually experienced it here.
It started about a year ago. The curse that haunts the Farrow women has found its way to June. She has been seeing and hearing things that aren’t there, including a mysterious red door. After the death of her grandmother, she begins to uncover clues about the truth of the family curse. When she is told to go through the red door the next time it appears, she discovers the family secret is even wilder than she imagined.
A beautiful blend of real life and fantasy, The Unmaking of June Farrow is spellbinding. Brimming with mystery and romance, I was transported into June’s world and captivated by her journey. While the story is a bit fantastical, the characters feel real and relatable, pulling you into their tale of magic.
Thanks to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group for the advance copy of this book.
June is a Farrow, and the Farrow women have this power or curse to be able to live in two time lines at once. June wants to break the curse and live her life before she goes crazy from it, as what supposedly happened to her mother.
I thought the idea for this book was intriguing and the story was interesting. June tries to reconcile two lives, one she doesn’t remember, and the whole idea of this story I find confusing.
For anyone who likes books about alternate timelines and time travel this book is right up your alley.
This might be my favorite Adrienne Young book so far! The Unmaking of June Farrow was a emotional, mysterious, and captivating. This book had a slow start but it was so easy to use get sucked into the setting. I love how the author's writing style can just teleport me right into the pages. Once the pacing picked up and the plot thickened I seriously couldn't put this down. This book was full of unexpected twists and I loved every page of it. I don't want to talk about the plot and accidentally spoil anything but I promise this is definitely worth the read.
Thank you to Random House Publishing and Netgalley for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you NetGalley for an ARC of this one! The atmospheric writing was everything but the concept of this book was just so so good. I love a good time travel, sci fi book and this did not disappoint. There was a twist near the end that I did not see coming at all and it absolutely blew me away. I am always a sucker for a time travel story and this one, I highly recommend!!!
I loved the story.
June has just lost her grandmother and her death brings a lot of questions that June is determined to find answers to.
What we will discover as we read will keep us trapped in the story.
June, convinced that she has inherited the curse that all the Farrow women in the family suffer from, is resigned when her symptoms begin, or so she thinks. But her grandmother before she died has left her an envelope that will change everything June believed and it seems that there are secrets in her family that they have kept closely guarded.
Adrienne has created a novel full of mysticism,Sci-fi fantasy, she has also added a murder mystery and a touch of romance, but above all the resilience and sacrifice of women willing to do anything to defend their loved ones.
Undoubtedly this story becomes one of my favorites of the author.
I hope you give it a chance, you won’t regret it!
The Unmaking of June Farrow is a masterpiece. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about this book since I finished it. What an amazing story of family, love, and sacrifice. This is unlike any time travel novel I have ever read. Full of twists, this book will keep you on your toes until the very end. So beautiful, and my favorite Adrienne Young book to date.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC. I’ve already ordered my physical copy so that I can read this again!
This is my first book by this author and I was completely blown away.
To write a story that involves multiple timelines and time travel but still keeps the reader firmly planted in the story is not an easy task. Adrienne Young does just that tough and brings a complex tale of family, love, and magic to life with each word written.
June Farrow is a character that will always have a piece of my heart.
[4.5 rounded to 5] The Unmaking of June Farrow is a mystery filled magical realism novel. There is reality with a touch of fantasy, which follows a similar vibe to Adrienne Young’s other novel, Spells for Forgetting. This tale follows June Farrow in the small town of Jasper, North Carolina. June is the last of the Farrow women. Their family is thought to suffer a mysterious curse and the mystery becomes more complex as June may be suffering more from it after the death of her grandmother. A mysterious red door appears, and June’s life becomes even more complicated. The story follows June as she attempts to solve the mystery of the madness.
This novel was captivating from start to finish. I am usually a fast reader, but I purposely slowed myself down while reading to try and look for all the clues throughout the writing. I loved trying to piece together all the elements and there were great plot twists along the way. Since there is a mystery in the story, it is difficult to review too much about it due to spoilers. The pacing was well-done, and it was a great novel written by Young. I love this style of story and Young’s variety. While it could be grouped together with Spells, it is very different than the Fable series. The romance in this story was good, although I do wish it was explored a little more. The cryptic vibe of the story is perfect for this time of year. Overall, this was another fantastic novel by Young and I can’t wait to read more from her.
**I give a special thank you to Netgalley and the publisher, Delacorte Press, for the opportunity to read this enjoyable novel. The opinions expressed are completely my own.**
This is a case where I WANT a half rating, SO badly. This is a strong 3.5/4 for me. Adrienne Young writes magical stories. All of the women in her stories (at least the ones I've read) all have magical abilities, steeped in folklore and mystery. June Farrow is no different.
All of the Farrow women have a curse. While they have a thriving flower farm, all of the women are cursed by madness. After her beloved grandmother's death, June has started hearing wind chimes and seeing a red door in unlikely places. She's also started seeing cryptic clues leading her down a path to her mother's disappearance decades earlier.
One of the most exciting things that Young is able to do is time hop. She's able to do this and capture both eras seamlessly. It's something many authors try and many fail. Additionally, Young creates perfect atmospheres for her books. The smell of tobacco, the smell of lavender, seeps through the pages of this story.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I absolutely adored this book. The story was intriguing, heartwarming and magical.
The writing is so atmospheric and cozy. The character development was great & I loved the Farrow women. The magical realism of this story is unlike any book I’ve read before.
I was so captivated by the story and could not put it down. I ended up finishing it in a day because I needed to get more answers!
This one is definitely in my top 5 of this year.
Pub date is today!
Thank you to the publisher and author for the ARC 🧡🧡
This book was beautifully written and you could almost feel yourself in the North Carolina setting while reading. The slightly spooky vibes and magical realism were perfect for October reading! Overall I really enjoyed the concept and story, however I did feel like it wrapped up a bit quickly and I had to work quite hard at times to keep the timelines/dates/versions of June straight in my mind - which at times pulled me out of the story and made it where the book took a bit longer to get through. Overall recommend!
A curse has plagued the Farrow women for generations. After June Farrow’s grandmother falls victim to the curse, and June herself realizes it’s coming for her, she begins to discover clues about her mother’s decades-old disappearance. In search of answers, June opens a red door that she once though was a hallucination. But could it be real — and where does it lead?
I did not end up finishing Spells for Forgetting by this same author, so I was hesitant to jump into this book. But I’m glad I did because I was pleasantly surprised!
The main improvement in June Farrow is the pacing. It was unputdownable from the start. I immediately needed to know why the Farrow women were cursed and how June was going to solve her mother’s disappearance. We don’t have to wait until the end for twists, either. Young peppers jaw-dropping reveals throughout the story.
Young is also a beautiful writer. Her prose is evocative, painting a portrait of a small farming town in North Carolina that leaps off the pages. June is a well-drawn character, too, who you can’t help but love.
My main issue with this story was that it was far too confusing. While I appreciated the creative plot and the way it dealt with the illusion of time, the latter became too mind-bending at times. I found myself putting the book down on multiple occasions to figure out what I’d just read. Some of the rules of time in this book also seemed to be arbitrary and ever-changing as well.
However, I still thoroughly enjoyed the ride and would recommend this book to anyone who’s looking for a genre-bending story — specifically fantasy, sci-fi, historical fiction, mystery and a dash of romance.
