Adrienne Young books are my drug of choice and she has just dealt me my newest addiction. What did Young put in the pages of this book? Best book I’ve ever read. My new favorite. Automatic preorder on all Young books for life.
I had a great time reading The Unmaking of June Farrow! I found the story beautifully written and engaging. Now, do I totally understand what happened? Not really. Time travel hurts my brain! But I had a great time nevertheless.
I don't love time travel stories, but Adrienne Young can write the hell out of any novel and time travel is absolutely no exception. The Unmaking of June Farrow is gorgeous, well-written, and transformative.
Thank you NetGalley and Random House for an e-arc in exchange for my honest review!
4.5/5 stars
Wow I was so amazed by this book! From first reading the blurb I was so intrigued by the vague details that were given but were still able to draw me in so easily. I needed to find out what this mysterious curse was that affected everyone in June's bloodline.
This was my first book by Young and I could tell early on how well she can describe a scene in such great detail that I could picture everything but the details didn't overtake the whole story. This made my experience so great and the reading so smooth.
I also loved how this book felt like it was a mixture of a few of my favorite books and the best pieces of them. That made the story really enjoyable for me. The little murder mystery plot was such a fun addition that I wasn't expecting!
There were a few points where I found myself having trouble keeping up with things that were being explained throughout but overall it was a fun read!
This just didn’t hit for me. The pacing was excruciatingly slow. The characters lacked depth and the story just felt hollow. Granted I’ll give the author props, they’re a fantastic writer. Their writing is super visual and romantic but the plot, storyline and characters were unfortunately not interesting enough to keep me engaged.
June has almost no personality and never really asks questions/demands answers about what’s happening. I was getting so frustrated just at the fact that after she went through the door no one would tell her anything and kept everything a secret for absolutely no reason. Telling her what has happened would have made things easier for everyone.
The romance is this book is nonexistent. June and Eamon have no chemistry at all. In fact, June herself seems to lack any chemistry with any of the other characters. She’s unremarkable as a character who has something remarkable happen to her. And the time traveling just made no sense. I wish we could have gotten some back lore about the when the curse started for the Farrow women. But we get nothing.
The best way I can describe this book is it’s a pretty house but vacant on the inside.
Normally I’m pretty great at figuring out the twist or the “secret”, but this book managed to shock me multiple times throughout. I honestly didn’t expect the way it was wrapped up and though the time portions are a little confusing, they are also well explained. What makes it confusing is mostly that there’s SO MUCH to explain and work through. It’s very complicated, but in a good way.
This story is heartbreaking at times and incredibly heartwarming at others. It’s a story about identity and time bending and a family of women who quite literally did anything to help and protect each other. As someone who didn’t have a close and supportive family growing up, I was honestly a little skeptical meeting other Farrow women in other times. I kept expecting someone to betray the other or refuse help, but they stuck together and supported each other.
This book was amazing and I will and already have recommended this to others. I can see myself reading this again and again.
Some random notes from my reading:
- I was STRESSED at the beginning when I thought the running bath water wasn’t going to be mentioned again.
- Eamon gives off the same energy that the main love interest does in a dark, possessive romance….you know, without any of the toxicity
- This book never felt like a slog. Everything felt important and I was never impatient to get through a scene or conversation to hurry up and figure something out or to get to a more interesting bit
This was a stunning book. The writing was just gorgeous and mesmerizing. All the voices were so distinct and it was surprisingly easy to keep up with all that was going on. What a wonderful book.
I am convinced Adrienne Young could write a shopping list and it would be poetry. I loved this book. There is always something in Adrienne's books that hits home for me and this time it was small town North Carolina and Gran. I spent many summers visiting my paternal grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins in North Carolina when I was young and reading this book took me back to the slow pace and long summer days. The Unmaking of June Farrow is a beautifully written love story that speaks to the heart of mothers and daughters. The love Eamon has for June is heart wrenching. It isn't often that a book catches me off guard but I didn't see the twist at the end of this one. I, of course, read this book in one sitting devouring every line and have made everyone I know read it since. Thank you to Netgalley and Delacorte Press for my digital ARC copy.
🌟 FIVE STAR FRIDAY 🌟
The Unmaking of June Farrow
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Short synopsis: After the death of her Grandmother, June learns of a Farrow Family secret affecting all the Farrow women.
My thoughts: All my friends raved about how good this one was, and I’ll be the first to tell you… they were right.
This was atmospheric and unforgettable. It was complex and so beautifully written. I loved the multi generational story and how much love the women had for each other.
I think it’s good to go somewhat blind into this story to really experience the uncovering of the secret along with June. There is an element of magical realism and a journey through time. Pick this up.
Read if you love:
- Magical realism
- Multigenerational
- Destiny
- Time travel
- Small town
This was an amazing and beautiful atmospheric magical realism book that I enjoyed quite a bit. I felt like the author did such an amazing job of setting the scene, and creating this idea that the Farrow women had this ability to go back and forth through time should they feel the need to, but only three total times. I did get a bit in the weeds with the time travel aspect, but it was fully explained by the end of the book and I have to say that twists and turns were unexpected but so welcomed. I appreciated how the characters were so fully developed, and I loved the ending of the book so much. This was my first read by Adrienne Young, but it will certainly not be my last. I found the development of the scenery so complete, I was instantly transported to the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. I definitely recommend this book to those who enjoy a character driven story with a slight magical realism element.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the advanced copy of this book. All opinions within this review are my own.
excellent book. was so excited to receive this ARC. it became one of my top favorite reads. cannot wait to read more from this author.
4.5 stars! I loved this book so much I had to annotate it and immediately recommended it to friends and family. So why isn't it 5 stars? At the end, I felt like I had to severely suspend my belief in order to make sense of the wrap up at the end. Logically, it just really didn't make sense to me. That being saidddddd... Do I get the intent? Absolutely. Did I sob looking at my 4 year old daughter? Yes. Yes I did. Will I re-read this book despite the plot holes? Probability is high! I love the twisty nature of Adrienne Young's books and will continue to pick them up every time.
I really enjoyed this book, however, I struggled at points to get through it. I still loved the characters and story, however, the pacing was a little slow in places.

I wasn’t the first Farrow, but I would be the last.
The Farrow women are cursed with a sickness that cannot be cured. Their minds are lost, and cannot be brought back. June’s mother disappeared when she was a baby, leaving June behind to be cared for by Gran. June watches as Gran’s mind fades into hallucinations, and vows to never have a child to save them from this fate. After Gran’s passing, June must face the reality of her life, and the hallucinations she’s begun having.
This book is full of so much magic and mystery in a way that only Adrienne Young can conjure. This was a spectacular read, and I look forward to what the author comes up with next.
In a matter of days, my entire world had come undone. I was slowly being taken apart, piece by piece. Truth by truth.
A spellbinding tale with magical realism, second chance romance, and a small town mystery. The plot unfolds at a steady pace and while enjoyable I had a hard time buying into the story and found myself setting it down on more than one occasion. The pacing felt slightly uneven, and the loose ends left to be tied off at the end felt a bit forced. All in all, I did enjoy this book, and would recommend for anyone interested in mystery and wanting to try a bit of fantasy and romance.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to receive this book for an honest review.
At first I found this one a little hard to get into because I just am not into time-travel. But I continued on and found myself enjoying this one.
June was a likeable character and I enjoyed reading about the Flowerfarm. It made me enjoyed flowers even more than I do.
If you are on the fence about this one I say give it a try you will not be disappointed.
This was a beautiful story. Time travel isn’t always something I enjoy in a book, it can get confusing sometimes. This was done so well, though, and I love that it had the time travel and portal fantasy mixed into it. This is my second book by Adrienne Young and it definitely won’t be my last. Her writing is beautiful and emotional and while I did prefer her Spells for Forgetting, this is easily another 5 star for me.
The plot! It made me feel all the things. The mystery was intriguing and from the beginning you get the feeling that something ELSE is definitely going on. The way it came full circle and ahhh. I can’t give too much away but it was so satisfying. The romance was really good and Young does so well at making the reader feel what June is feeling. This will be a book that stays with me for a long time. Again, definitely a 5 star for me. Thank you Netgalley and Random House Ballantine for the arc.
This was my favorite read of 2023. I loved the time travel aspect and family history. Such a fun book!
Thank you Netgalley for giving me an arc in exchange for my honest review.
I really love Adrienne Young storytelling and the time travel was really well done. The mystery, the love story, the murder, the characters, everything was really well done. I'm glad that I kind of figure out what was going on with the murder but I was really wrong about most of my speculations.
The Farrow women are known for their flower farm and the curse that has plagued their family line. June decides she has had enough and risks everything to end their families century old curse, solve her mother’s disappearance and hopefully find love along away.
R E V I E W:
Adrienne Young has done it again. Last fall she wrote Spells for Forgetting which was perfect and she’s back at it again with this fall release. (@adrienneyoungbooks please keep doing these fall vibe books, they are everything)
This story was just wonderful. The plot was perfect, the characters were perfect. You’re just hugging June the whole time hoping she can figure out what’s going on and the ending is just perfect. Everything is pieced together and it’s mind blowing. I will 100% read anything this author writes, especially her fall releases. Just a great story. Definitely recommend. This book could be read all year long.
