After reading the books of the Emily Calby series, I was very optimistic that I would enjoy this book and I definitely did. This author really has a way with dialogue and I loved the blend of dark humor along with the action in this book. There were so many times I laughed out loud. I very entertained by the antics of the characters, especially a character known by the name Fink. I could really imagine the scenes and how these would play out with all of the eyerolls and dirty looks. This author has really grown on me and I will have to go back and read the first book of this series now. Thanks for the ARC, NetGalley.

So this book was both dark and hilarious and I found myself laughing out loud on several occasions. I especially loved the character Jessica and could not get enough of her. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this copy.

Having never read anything by this author before I did not know what to expect. What a great read this was!

Jessica is 12. Her family owns and operates a funeral home. After her grandfather dies, criminals force her parents to sell their funeral home. She runs to Danny for help finding them after get scared and run off.

Danny is 37. He owns and somewhat operates a surf shop. He's still grieving the loss of his wife who died of cancer the year before.

Jessica and Danny make a great team both in working together to track down her parents and the bad guys. They have similar personality traits and both are dealing with grief and compliment each other well.

It's funny, lighthearted and yet dark. Hard to describe, but throughly enjoyable. Lots of heart and snark and action galore. Definitely recommend this to anyone who likes a good cozy-ish mystery.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion of this book.

Reading this book after the Emily Calby series set me up for disappointment. The opening chapters suffered dozens of pronoun confusion, the story is campy, and Jessica is annoying. I wanted to love this, but I couldn't finish it. I was tempted to give up way earlier than I did, so I really tried. 2.5 stars, rounded up for the humor.

The perfect mix of suspense, thriller, and humor. Such a fun read.

Brief Synopsis: After Jessica’s parents mysteriously sell their family’s funeral home, they immediately go into hiding leaving Jessica with Danny (a family friend). Together they work to unravel the mystery behind a secret operation happening at the funeral home.

First off, we need to talk about Jessica. 🤣 She is up there as my favorite book character of all time. Her quick wit, no nonsense personality was literary gold. Jessica takes space in a room and isn’t afraid to make it known that she means business. Her commentary is laugh out loud funny.

I requested an ARC of Funeral Daze on a whim, and I’m so glad I did. I was not expecting to be taken on such a fun and hilarious ride. Thriller/suspense novels aren’t typically full of funny banter and one-liners.

Funeral Daze is a light hearted mystery I’m certain you’ll enjoy. Just go into it with an open mind and enjoy the ride.

This book was a light hearted mystery/crime, which I didn’t know could exist together so well. The way the author Dorian Box wrote about the two main characters relationship made me smile the entire book. The love and admiration Jessica and Danny have for each other and how their relationship helped both of them in low/scary parts of their life warmed my heart. Not only the main characters but also the secondary/tertiary characters made the book relatable. The patrons of the Tradewinds bar reminded me of many people in my own life. This book had everything I look for in a new book; mystery and suspense, a little satire, and also that good feeling you get when there’s a sweet relationship between the characters. This was a perfect read for my Florida beach vacation and I would recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a light mystery/crime.

A darkly witty and clever mystery. It was well-written and the plot moved along at a good pace. Some great characters throughout. I liked Jessica's character but at times found her a little unbelievable, as her level of knowledge in some topics (e.g surfboards) would only come from being on the planet longer than her years. This was the first book I've read by this author, and although it appears to be one in a series it read well as a standalone book. Overall I think this page turner would translate well to the screen and would love to see it picked up. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

I was surprised when I picked up this book. I wasn’t really expecting something so well written and boy did this grab me and reel me right in.

When a mid thirties widower finds himself attending the funeral of an older mortician he met five years earlier, he didn’t expect to become responsible for the man’s twelve year old grand daughter in the midst of a family emergency. But there is was, Danny was taking care of Jessica and found himself smack dab in the middle of a real life mystery.

Trying to get over the loss of his wife the year before, Danny finds himself shelling the girl, but also receiving help from her. Will the pair be able to fix the mob threat the family has received? Will he be able to keep Jessica safe, or are they both marked for murder themselves now? Only time will tell.

"SUMMER 2000. When down-and-out surfer and former lottery winner Danny Teakwell was framed for a grisly murder, he got help from a family of wacky morticians that included seven-year-old embalming expert Jessica Jewell (Psycho-Tropics). Five years later, the tables are turned when Jessica shows up, alone and desperate, seeking shelter. Her parents suddenly sold their family funeral home and vanished."
This is a OK mystery. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion of this book.

Funeral Daze was a delightful change from my usual murder mysteries! Fun characters that I grew to love – especially 12-year-old Jessica! Her relationship with Danny is the focus of the book and they are both struggling through their lives. There is a wonderful balance between mystery and hilarious dark humor! I look forward to hearing more from Box! Thank you to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for my copy of this quirky, fun, dark book.

So after reading the blurb, I was intrigued, but it just felt bizarre in a way. Jessica's family owns a funeral home, and when something weird happens, she runs to Danny. Someone she seems to know from before, and with his help, she finds out what really happened to make her family attempt to sell the funeral home that has been in her family for years. Jessica wants answers, and with her strong-willed mind, she will get them, even if it puts her in danger. The relationship between her and Danny seems odd, and I find it weird how she has attached herself to him. It is sorta like she has imprinted on him or something. It seems there is a first book where they know each other, so maybe I need to read book one before this one to understand their relationship. Some of the situations seemed sorta unreal, but it was funny. I never thought about a funeral home involved in crime, which was funny. Not sure it was my favorite book, but it was enjoyable.

Are you freaking kidding?! I was sent this as a widget and I am so upset with myself it took so long to get to. Dorian had me crying and laughing and riding the wave of emotions throughout this whole novel. I find myself needing to read Psycho Tropics after this. Danny was everything and Jessica is such an old soul. Excellent read.

This was a light hearted but yet heavy mystery involving a 12 year old, Jessica, who needs help and Danny who's in a bad way in life. They need each other. I ate every word up! I loved it!

Thank you to Dorain Box and @NetGalley for the #gifted copy of the book. I really enjoyed the Emily Calby series so I jumped at the opportunity to read this book.

I will admit the the synopsis was intriguing. A 12 year old who is obsessed with death because her family owns a funeral home finds herself in the middle of a major problem. Her grandfather died and her parents sell the funeral home after some mobsters threatened her dad. She gets stuck with Danny, who seems to be a friend that she doesn't know very well as they try to figure out the mystery behind the sell of the funeral home.

While this was a good story, it was a bit of a let down as the relationship between Danny and Jessica seems odd. There is a prior book called Pyscho-Tropics that perhaps I should have read first. I did love Jessica's character. I am always a fan of strong willed girls.

Funeral Daze is a fun, eccentric, mystery-filled tale that took me on a ride from start to finish. The characters are endearing (particularly twelve year old Jessica) and a lot of focus is rightfully placed on the relationship between Danny and Jessica as they navigate their respective solo and joined struggles. The book strikes a nice balance between dark humour and mystery. Definitely a fun summer read!

What a kick I got out of this fun, quirky, book! Delightful down to earth characters. Set in Florida. You will find yourself immersed inside the read and not wanting to stop. Characters are believable. Story is well plotted. A much needed breath of fresh air for me to read. Thanks #Netgalley and #FrictionPress for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine.

Somehow it made me think of a British black humour movie, The Wrong Box. It's one of the most hilarious book I read in some time and I laughed a lot.
Well plotted, fast paced, a cast of weird and fleshed out characters.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine

Just wow!! I always go in to a book knowing very little, I had a vague idea and I honestly didn’t think it was going to be as good as it was. I love it when a book surprises you. From the first chapter to the last I was engaged the whole time. I read it in two sittings. It was a murder mystery unlike something I have ever read before. I am definitely going to be reading more by Dorian box.
