I am a huge fan of anything that has to do with Pride & Prejudice! I love retellings and books that offer other prospectives. And this book does that. Well done!
It's a brave soul to improve on a classic like Pride and Prejudice. . .but kudos to those who sally forth. I was interested in learning something new about Mr. Darcy as this landed on my TBR shelf.
It was lovely to walk down the path with Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, and that pause on the stair. . . classic. Swoon-worthy. All the easter eggs and landmarks I've loved through the years were there. But (and here's the Big But. . .) there were no new nuggets I wanted to keep forever and put in my P&P box. . .a few concerns were raised but they were easily dismissed. If I'm reading a work based on someone else's story I want to learn something new about that tale, or those characters, or get pushed over into suspension of disbelief land (this took me no where near that land: someone turn him into a astronaut, or a vampire maybe).
This was entertainment of a gentler sort - a deeper look into Darcy - who for such a tightly wound soul in JA's world, in this world keeps a confessional diary. That was a surprise, and set me off to some future scene where the diaries are discovered by children? published in late life by his widow Elizabeth? Or found by maid's by-blow in 20 years and inherits all? My mind wandered, just a little.
*A sincere thank you to Alice McVeigh, Warleigh Hall Press, and NetGalley for an ARC to read and review independently.* #DarcyAPrideandPrejudiceVariation #NetGalley
I always enjoy a retelling of any of the Jane Austen novels. The writing is pretty great. I appreciate the attempt to show Darcy’s complexity and more of his faults.
As a big fan of Jane Austen - Pride and Prejudice especially - it was very entertaining to return to Meryton and follow these beloved characters once again. The diary entries from Mr. Darcy's point of view provided an extra layer of depth to his character and his decisions.
While not much was changed in the overall plot, the book was entertaining and felt like a lighter read than the original Austen edition.
Such a great book!
This retelling follows the same story all of us know but gives us more point of views to understand more how things really worked.
We, obviously got Darcy's and Lizzie's POV (although everyone somehow calls her Eliza and it is kind of weird). We have Mr. Collins POV, which was really dull but helps us understand how he ends up married with Charlote Lucas. We have Charlote's POV, which shows us that she is not really the good friend we think she is. We have Mary's POV, she can be as dull as Mr. Collins but is kind of interesting how she analyzes everything that happens to her sisters and why she thinks those things happen.
It was a good experience and I hope everyone reads this book.
Unfortunately there were too many variations from the original text which I did not enjoy. It was difficult to read this without pointing out the differences between the original text and this version and that threw off my reading.
A cute variation on one of my favorite books of all time. I enjoyed the writing and the storyline. I thought it was a good variation of the story.
I love Jane Austin and Mr Darcy is one of my favourite romantic hero's. I was so excited when I saw this book come up on netgalley. What could be better than revisiting the story from holis point of view?
While I did enjoy the book it was a bit hard to read at times. It was trying to hard to match Austins writing style but just fell short. It just didn't flow for me.
Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review. I have to start by saying, I'm a huge Pride and Prejudice fan; when I saw that this title was available I knew that I had to request it. I usually enjoy retelling, but I couldn't get into this one. I have been in a reading slump and I think that the multiple perspectives threw me off a bit. This book was well-written, it matched the tone of Pride and Prejudice, but it just didn't engage me the way I expected it to. The book was a decent read, it just wasn't a special read. I think that this book would entertain certain book clubs at the library, so I will recommend it to our reader's groups.
I absolutely adored this retelling- I am a sucker for Darcy's POV. I thought this was a really well done retelling of the classic Pride and Prejudice. Original enough to be fresh, but still loyal to the original. I definitely will be checking out the author's other works. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this e-ARC!
I will always enjoy a well written Jane Austen variation - even though they never bring anything new to the story. In fact I do prefer if the authors don't try to bring anything new. McVeigh opens the book with a story about a fling between Darcy and a temperamental Italian women. For me, that was just a distraction and completely unnecessary. But, in general this was a good, entertaining retelling of Pride & Prejudice.
Thank you NetGalley for the chance to read and review this ARC.
Pride and Prejudice is a classic Austen novel and McVeigh has cleverly expanded it by retelling the story of Darcy and giving us a few humorous looks of the other characters. It's a delight to read Mr. Darcy's diary, Miss Mary Bennett's writings and Elizabeth's thoughts and reflections as the story unfolds. McVeigh has captured the language and conversation of the era to perfection and adds humor and surprises for the reader. Do yourself a favor and immerse yourself in the world once again of Jane Austen and this delightful novel.
I truly enjoyed this engaging take on P&P. I found the quoted parts well incorporated, and the story as a whole well-written. Mary's POV was hysterical. The ending was a full epilogue conveyed in succinct moments rather than extensive explanations. Recommend.
I read an ARC of this book, and honestly, I can only give it 3 stars. Too many characters to keep up with for me - I had to write down a list to keep them all straight. Granted, it's been years I read Pride and Prejudice, so I'm sure the language reflected the time period and Austin's original works. But I grew weary of the word "cried" to describe everyone's reaction to each other. And I felt there were too many stories wound up in this book to keep them all straight. Perhaps it wasn't the right book for me at this time, as others loved it. But I am just giving my honest feedback. I almost never leave a 3 star review, but in exchange for an honest review, I felt it was warranted. Thanks to Netgalley for the chance to read this one; all opinions are my own.
This book just wasn't for me I wanted to like it but was disappointed that I didn't.
The biggest proble I had with this book was with Mr Darcy. One moment he was against falling in love with Elizabeth due to his past experience, but later he just suddenly realises that he can't live without her. The problem here is that there is a disconnect in his emotional journey and it was difficult to see how he changed his decision all of a sudden.
It was very good - it was written well. It was a nice variation of Pride and Prejudice in comparison to others I have read
I’m what they call an Austen Head. I’m a sucker for any work that riffs off Jane. And usually I’m sorely disappointed. Not this time. Loved reading such a familiar story from Mr Darcy’s point of view, with extra information that carried the work along. Also I always love when an author gives much deserved attention to poor Mary, who gets to shine here, Well done indeed!
Alice McVeigh's Darcy doesn't quite hit the mark. It's well-written, it's very much in the style of Jane Austen, but it isn't the best retelling of P&P going (that's probably Longbourn, for the record). I read this because, like most of the reviewers and prospective readers, I have always loved Jane Austen. But McVeigh's version is, truly, a variation as promised. It's the same as the original with just a few different notes here and there. The success is in her recreation of that world, of that language, without much deviation. She's not revealing much we didn't see in Austen's original. I wish she had pushed a little hard, created a little more. But, looking at this book from the point of view of her intentions, I can give it a four out of five.
In honesty, I enjoyed what I read of this volume, but was unable to finish it as I fell ill and missed the archive date!
I think this would be a great read for those new to Pride and Prejudice, or Austen’s writing as a whole (especially students), as it is definitely an accessible step into her world. I also agree with other reviewers that the chapters from other perspectives did feel a bit jarring; the impression from the cover, title and blurb is that the volume will focus purely on Darcy’s perspective, and this was therefore slightly misleading.
It is a terribly difficult job to write a Pride and Prejudice spin-off that meets the impeccably high expectations of fans of Jane Austen (and also to write anything that will be directly compared to her talent). McVeigh is brave. This work is witty and fun, and offers a great insight into Darcy and supporting characters. Nothing can ever compare to the original, and McVeigh will know this, and this work a fantastic achievement in itself.
Thank you to NetGalley and Warleigh Hall Press for the arc.
did not finish. it wasn't anything to do with the book. its rather that I got busy with school and never found it interesting enough to pick it back up unfortunately. I'm sure other people found it to be interesting and nice but it just didn't entice me to pick it back up after reading the first couple of pages.
