This book is a mixed bag. Some scenes are very creative and funny; some scenes just stop in the middle. Some of the inner monologue is witty and entertaining; some of it is gibberish that might be missing a word or two. I knew from the synopsis that the lead characters would be unlikable at the beginning; I did not expect them to still be unlikable at the end. Or maybe they did grow as people -- it was hard to tell because the final "I love you" speeches were mixed with explanations that didn't make much sense. I gave this 3 stars for the parts that I did like.
Rounded up from 3.5
Lexi is a spoiled heiress. Evan is a mechanic down on his luck. They get in a car accident, and after a confrontation about who has it worse, they strike a deal: they have switch lives for two months. And if she loses, she will lose everything.
This is an opposites attract, enemies to lovers, single parent marketed as Trading Places meets 10 Things I Hate About You. I have to admit that I was only on page 2 and I was seriously considering DNFing this because Lexi was so annoying and a spoiled brat. But the premise was interesting, and I figure there was a lot of room for character growth, and I was right. However, the story is mainly based on misunderstandings, assumptions, lies and miscommunication, none which are not my favorite plot tools. And the public humiliation scene on the yacht also annoyed me. With everything both MCs did to each other, I don't really understand why they ended up together. Otherwise it's a fun and quick romcom.
I received an advance review copy of this book for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
If you loved “It Happened One Summer” you will love this book! It didn’t start great for me, our female main character Lexi seemed very spoiled and unbearable at the beginning. But after finishing the book, that was just a perfect introduction to be able to witness how much her character grows as the story progresses. Love the way she finds herself, and sees herself as a different person by the end. Evan had his flaws but we also got to see how much he changed. The banter between the both of them was cute, funny, but sometimes Evan was too mean.
I think I would have enjoyed this more if the bet had more of a backstory. I know it’s fiction but it just seemed a bit rushed and very unlikely for two people that don’t know a thing about each other, trust one another in their homes, with their money, and their belongings.
Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled for allowing me to read this advance copy!
If you’re in the mood for a nice rom-com/pallet cleanser then this book definitely fits the bill! Light hearted but still spicy. I hated the FMC at first (it’s the entitlement for me) but liked her by the end.
I honestly didn't expect to like it as much as I did! I absolutely loved the idea of a rich spoiled girl switching places with a mechanic! They suprisingly had so much chemistry and great banter. The story was definitely character driven, and I really loved Lexi's development. The plot and action were also pretty good in all honesty!
Where my issues lay was the writing... It didn't flow too well, there were no smooth transitions. I think there could be more inner monologues of Lexi and Evan, which could make the story funnier. Especially in the beginning chapters when Lexi starts working at the shop and one of the guys says something hurtful and it's just never acknowleged??? I just needed one line to know how she's feeling about it...
The whole bet thing was a bit rushed and didn't really make sense. I wish it was more thought out.
Anyways, the writing got better as the story went on and I found myself compelled to find out what happens next!
Thank you netgallery for ARC! This is my honest review.
Rating: 4.5/5
I received an eARC for my honest opinion.
I thought this romcom was cute and was an interesting read. I found it to be fast paced most of the time and it did slow down a little bit but was not a bad thing. It allowed the reader to get to know the characters more and I was okay with that.
I liked the characters a lot alone but together I loved them. I wasn’t a big fan of Lexi but the more you get to know her the more that you start to really understand her as a person, you get to see a side of her that most people can relate to. I liked that she was grossed out about what she would have to do in the beginning of the bet, then to see her later loving working and earning her own money. I thought her growth as a character was well done, you will see her go through her stages of accepting the growth and learning how to deal and cope with the changes.
Evan was a character that I knew right away that I wouldn’t like but wow that changed the more that I learned about why he is the way he is. He is a cute, grumpy, annoying, and funny guy. I liked that he didn’t just take Lexi crap without dishing it right back at her and was really determined to hate everything that she had but came to love some parts of her lifestyle… like her amazing shower, I want a shower like that too. I also enjoyed that he treated Lexi just like he would anyone else and not like her normal group of people she hung out with. He really helped her see that she could do anything he could if she would just try and learn.
I thought I would hate the ending because I didn’t want it to end but I liked how the author redeemed Evan in the end and how Lexi and he had to talk out everything instead of just giving up on something special they had. I also want this made into a Netflix film
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a fast, fun romcom, a little bit of enemies to lover’s vibes and found family.
I want to thank NetGalley and Entangled publishing for the opportunity to review this book.
Trading Places by Emily Duvall
Rating: 2.5 stars
Pub date: 9/26
This book had a delightful premise: the swap of lives between a socialite and a blue-collar mechanic. However, my reading experience was very different than my expectations.
I struggled with the writing style from the beginning, which felt clunky and inconsistent. The lack of smooth transitions between sentences and paragraphs left me disoriented, particularly in the first chapter. Although it improved slightly as the story progressed, the abrupt changes of topic and numerous continuity errors persisted throughout the book, making it a challenging read.
Despite these issues, I continued because the plot was so intriguing. Duvall deserves credit for crafting a fast-paced and engaging story. There are some hilarious moments, mainly the mishaps that occurred as Lexi and Evan navigated each other's lives, and a few that made me feel connected to the characters.
Unfortunately, this book just wasn’t for me. Clunky writing aside, Evan's behavior at times (especially the third act conflict) was immature and very disappointing.
Overall, this had a promising concept and an entertaining storyline, but it suffered from writing that needed more refinement. The book has a lot of potential, but it fell short for me. Thank you so much to Entangled Publishing for my early copy.
I have to start by saying a big thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for providing me with an ARC of "Trading Places" by Emily Duvall I'm super picky when it comes to romance novels, and it takes something truly magical to earn my precious 5 starsWell, this book absolutely nailed it!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I was over the moon to get to know Lexi and Evan, two characters who come from completely different worlds. Lexi, the glamorous socialite living what looks like a dream life, and Evan, the hardworking mechanic just trying to make ends meet. Right from the get go, the setup had me hooked!
Lexi's life goes completely crazy one night, and she ends up switching lives with Evan after a crazy car accident. It's like a rollercoaster ride, going from her fancy life to Evan's everyday struggles. The difference between their worlds makes this story seriously intense.
The best part of this book!!! It's all about the super steamy connection between Lexi and Evan. Their chemistry is seriously on fire!
Trading Places is a romance that has it all spicy moments, passion, love, laughs, and those sweet moments. I couldn't put it down, I just had to know what was happening next with Lexi and Evan.
If you're into romance, you seriously need to read this one. It's a must for romance lovers. Huge thanks again to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for letting me enjoy this amazing book!
Entangled knows how to pick original stories. The premises couldn't be more unrealistic, but the characters are so layered and developed throughout the story. I loved Lexi and Evan, and of course, Cece (who started the whole thing lol)
The way Evan and Lexi's relationship turned from hate to love and back to hate kept me wanting more. Lexi is a spoiled brat that doesn't know any better because she was never shown proper love. Her mother abandoned her, and father was always focused on his business. That was until she met Evan, and they made a bet to trade places. Evan is a mechanic who has been in charge of taking care of his niece and they are just barely getting by. They both learn from each other's life but think they have to be someone else to have the other. I absolutely love how Lexi became an adult by having to live with no means but what she had to earn. I loved this book more than I thought I would.
I thought the idea of this book was unique and would be fun to read. This book was very fast paced, but in the way that events jump around and topics were changed so quickly, I was often confused on what was going on and had to go back to make sure I didn’t miss anything. I think this book could use a bit more editing, but it would be great for people who enjoy those cheesy romcom stories.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you Entangled Publishing and NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. It started off boring and then picked up. Heiress Lexi and mechanic Evan met because of an accident. They come from two completely different worlds. It was very interesting how the author made their worlds merge. With that in mind, I could not put the novel down once I got into it. It was a very pleasant read.
Let me start by saying I am not normally a romance reader, however I actually enjoyed this book. It was lighthearted, funny, and had a little spice. Don’t get me wrong, I found this book to be very predictable (within the first 2 chapters I knew how it would end), but I found it to be a cute and easy read.
We meet Lexi, a spoiled rich heiress living life spending daddy’s money, recently dumped and down on her luck when she crashes into Evan. Evan is a mechanic at a family owned business down on their luck and taking care of his niece. Upon a sudden bet the two switch lives and navigate through their new lives (for the next 2 months). Who will win? Who will lose?
I enjoyed this book very much and think it was a nice pallet cleanser in between my usually dark, mystery, thriller, fantasy books. I liked the character development, I started out hating Lexi then I grew to actually really like her. The secret admirer bit throughout the book actually made me laugh out loud at the end.
If you’re looking for something light, fast, and funny/cute I’d recommend this book to you!

I was really looking forward to reading this book! Sadly though, Upon trying to download, it stated the file was corrupted.
I really liked the concept and the beginning of this book. I didn’t like Lexi’s attitude towards everything around her. I thought the book would go a different way. I loved how Lexi’s character evolved through the rest of the story but the person who disappointed me and who I had initially really liked was Evan. I hated how he changed over the course of the book. I was so sad to see that kind of change in him. I wish it had ended differently than the way it did. As much as I liked Lexi, I didn’t like Evan and their romance.
Thank you, NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
Trading Places was a book that I started and just couldn't put down! I loves the dynamic between the two main characters, it has romance, family drama, self discovery, and so much more! It was a great story and I enjoyed reading it. I loved the 2 person point of view and switching between Lexi and Evan with each chapter made it feel so exciting! I would definitley reccomend reading this book.
Thank you to Entangled Publishing, Amara and NetGalley for my complimentary eARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Enjoyable take on the movies Trading Places, Grease, and Pretty Woman. I binged this one in a day.
Spoiled rich girl vs hardworking blue collar man switch lives for the summer after a bet.
You know I was there for all the drama and predictability. It was nice to see Evan and North grow over the course of the summer. Life is not always greener on the other side of the fence.
Lexi — a spoiled brat who spends her fathers money ends up being screwed over by the man named Hudson who she was pining over and hoped they’d be back together after his return after 3 years, only to meet his new girlfriend in return. She ends up making a complete fool of herself by making it rain money, and ends up in an accident after leaving her party.
This is where we meet Evan, a local mechanic and extra fine if you know what I mean. She ends up leaving her car after not quite asking him to have it towed because she had to go and offered him $3,000 in cash only to not have it. Except something extra special from her grandmother had fallen off in it. The scene that follows the next day had me laughing as CeCe was introduced as Evan’s niece.
Then the bet made up by CeCe — to trade places with Evan for two months. Surviving on his job as a mechanic, and his income, while they work her job and live her lifestyle. If Lexi quits, she owes them $100,000 and her bracelet. If she wins, she gets her bracelet back. How we her father also had an extra term of his own — complete it on her own, or she forfeits her inheritance and is cut off for good.
This is where we really see Lexi shine over time as she learns the hard lessons of things she’s never had to do with the lap of luxury she had. While Evan does help where he can throughout the novel, she really does learn quickly how to rely on herself and I love how she grows from the spoiled trust fund kid to one that finds that money isn’t everything.
I absolutely loved the heck out of Lexi when it came to Hudson when his love life fell apart and he tried crawling back. Loved it.
The plot is well written and absolutely loved how Evan tried to impress her over time with his own growing pains himself. The ending was amazing, well written and had me bawling like a baby. They made a great couple at the end and the twists that happened throughout were unexpected.
A selfish, spoiled heiress and a mechanic make a bet to swap lives for two months and fall in love along the way. Sounds like the plot of a good Disney movie (except a bit steamier), which is exactly what I wanted.
It was a pretty fun and quick read. There were cute scenes and moments that made me crack a smile. But, it also felt a bit over the top at times. Lexi and Evan living each others lives changes them in the ways you would expect. Once Evan stepped into the rich douchebag role, he never recovered from that in my eyes. I was really rooting for Lexi to have better by the end.
Also, nothing to do with the plot or anything but WHERE IS EVANS PONYTAIL ON THE COVER???
2.5/5 ⭐⭐⭐
Lexie is a spoiled heiress, while Evan is a down-on-his-luck mechanic. When a series of events leads them to make a viral bet about switching lifestyles, the two find themselves thrust together.
It was meh. I hate to say it because I had such high hopes for it.
The synopsis really seemed like something I would enjoy, given my past enjoyment of similar stories. However, perhaps that was the issue; the story felt familiar yet somehow different, and not as good as I had hoped. This hindered the overall experience. One of the more significant issues was the lack of chemistry between Lexie and Evan, and I didn't particularly like either of them. What really ruined it for me was their behavior during 'the conflict'. Evan's response after Lexie confessed her feelings was so frustrating. I already didn't care much about them, but this truly diminished him as a hero-type character in my eyes.
This book felt like a knock-off of other, superior stories, such as "It Happened One Summer." I couldn't help picturing and missing Piper Bellinger. While it had the life swap element, even by romcom standards, it felt overly sensationalized in a way that didn't work for me.
