While I was drawn to the cover art, the rest of the artwork wasn’t my favorite (still cute just not my usual style). The story is simple and cute, easy to read through. I enjoyed the question within the story (what is her favorite animal), it adds another layer for my little bookworm once he’s older.

My Favourite Animal

I absolutely adore animals so this book was a no brainer for me!
The cover instantly grabbed my attention as it's covered with glorious images of so many different animals and I love the wraparound image.
I enjoyed following Ariadna through her day and seeing all her activities and their animal metaphors.
I loved so many of the different animals and the images - but have to say that my favourites were the cat page and the shark playing the cornet!
The images were brilliant and I liked that on some pages they were mixed colour and black and white which contrasted nicely.
The images were super busy and full of extra discussion prompts. You could also count the number of each of the animals on the pages with your little ones.
The best thing was that at the end, we had to guess which was Ariadna's favourite animal was and I'd totally missed that there were hidden clues throughout the book.
This meant that we instantly had to go back and re-read the book again to spot all the clues (no spoilers!)
A really lovely quick read for before bedtime or at story time.
This would also make a great group reader too where the discussion could lead to chatting about favourite animals, animal noises or drawing your favourite from the story.
Loved this one so much and think this would have been a firm favourite with my children - a great addition to your shelves at home.
💕Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for my ARC copy - this is my honest review 💕
Very cute book! I read it with my 6 year old who could read 90% of it on her own. We loved the illustrations as well!
My Favorite Animal was a fun story about a girl that play acts as different animals throughout the day. It was a warm and cozy read that I had fun using as a readaloud with my child. Perfect for animal lovers or those with an active imagination.
It was a really fun read! Ariadna's endearing animal-like behaviour is also a plus. I absolutely liked the illustration. and, of course, I guessed Ariadna's favorite animal right away 🐾
I read My Favorite Animal with my 3 year old. She sat through the story and enjoyed seeing the little girl impersonating the different animals. She also enjoyed moving like the animals in the book and making the animal sounds but I wouldn't say she was blown away by the story.
There was a good use of similies and metaphors throughout the book. I also liked the variety of animals throughout but felt the story was very short and felt almost rushed.
The drawings were nice and my 3 year old enjoyed looking at the array of animals on the pages but I personally like more colourful illustrations and felt these were quite dull.
Overall the book is ok for a 2-5 year old audience.
My child enjoyed this book a lot. My child enjoyed looking at the different animals and what they were doing on each page.
A great story about a girl Penelope who loves animals so much that she acts out their personalities in her everyday life.
I thought the book was cleverly done to show children how imaginary play can be fun . It was also fun to try and find clues in each page of the book to discover what is Penelope,s favorite animal .
I thought the illustrations were good but nor as colorful as I would have liked to see .
I just reviewed My Favorite Animal by Andreu Llinàs Durán. #MyFavoriteAnimal #NetGalley
I found that I was drawn to the artwork on the cover of this book, but I did not like the artwork that was in the rest of the book. The artwork style form the cover to the pages inside is quite different and I just wasn’t a fan of the style in this book. The story itself was alright, but it wasn’t a standout story to me either. I did like that you could go back and find the main character’s favourite animal on every page throughout the book after finishing the story.
Thank you to Chouette Publishing, CrackBoom! Books and NetGalley or providing me with a free electronic copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
As a mom with an early childhood background, I love books that provide opportunities for a variety of different activities!
Your imagination can run wild as the author describes Ariadna as a variety of different animals. The use of adjectives and illustrations are fantastic! My four year old son absolutely adored this book. We had fun acting out each animal as we read.
I would definitely use this book in the classroom but it also makes a fun book to read at home too!
My Favorite Animal is the lovely story of Ariadna who loves animals. The story really appealed to my 6 year old son who absolutely loved it and it also has lovely illustrations to accompany the story.
Thank you to NetGalley and Chouette Publishing for my ARC.
Ariadna loves animals so much she often pretends to be them. This adorable storybook is great fun for little ones, who can imagine alongside Ariadna. A little bonus at the end will send them right back to the start to read it once again.
The author is also the illustrator, and the illustrations are fantastic- and perfect for little ones to explore and delight in.
Thank you Andreu Llinàs Durán, Chouette Publishing, CrackBoom! Books, and NetGalley for providing this ARC for review consideration. All opinions expressed are my own.
This book was so cute, and with a surprise twist at the end, that lets you go back and re-enjoy the story! It was especially fun how each page had a different animal and color scheme - it made sure the book never gets boring or repetitive.
I received an advanced copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
For this little girl, animals are everything. She can be a cat, snoopy throughout her makeshift forest. Or a mouse, small and hiding. Every moment is a different animal, but which one is her favorite?
A laugh-out-loud picture book where one girl dresses as different animals for different occasions. It was a cute read, seeing her act out these animals of different kinds. I liked how each animal meant a different scenario, just too adorable.

📝: Ariadna loves animals. Throughout her day, she acts like different animals within the animal kingdom. But one animal is her favorite of all. Can you guess which one by looking at the pictures?
What I 🤍:
📏 Lots of Similes and Metaphors (Figurative Speech)
🎤 Imaginative Animal Noises
💜 Excellent Vocabulary Choices
👀 Search Activity (Find her favorite animal).
When I was reading this to my kiddo, I loved how rich the story was developmentally. First, with all the animals, we were able to make animal noises throughout the story, and talk about where we would find those animals. Then, there were so many similes, and it was fun comparing two things. Also, Duran did an excellent job of adding rich vocabulary to the story. Looking at the pictures to find the favorite animal was also fun to do! As an elementary teacher, this is a book I would use with Kindergarten-second grade as a mentor text for figurative speech in writer's workshop.
🙏 Thank you NetGalley, Chouette Publishing and CrackBoom! Books for a copy of this book. This review is my own after reading to my daughter. 🤍
🌟 My Favorite Animal is out on October 10, 2023!~ 🌟
What a great picture book, I loved the opening pages with all the little animals on and the huge detailed drawings in each page. Any child that loves animals will love this book.
This picture book is a heartwarming read that sparks the imagination of young readers. Penelope's animal-filled day takes them on a joyful journey, while the charming illustrations add magic to the story and make it come alive. It's a perfect blend of creativity and fun, and the guessing game keeps children engaged.
Penelope loves animals and spends most of her time pretending she is apart of the animal kingdom. She tries to acts like every different animal but she has 1 favorite that she always turns to. This children's book has great illustrations!
3.5⭐
Genre ~children's fiction
Publication date ~ October 10, 2023
Page Count ~ 36
We follow Ariadna for the day as she imitates the following animals: cat, lion, peacock, shark, bull, rabbit, puppy, penguin, bird, tortoise, bear, mouse, elephant
What I liked:
~ her unusual name
~ how it's interactive for children to try to figure out what her favorite animal is, but ages 3-6 might not be able to figure it out in the first read through since there's a lot to see on each page. I needed a reread myself 😹
~ the comparison between her and the animals are pretty good from my general knowledge of them ~ rabbit ears always alert, waddle like a penguin, moves slowly like a tortoise, etc
What I was confused about:
~ at the beginning the story seems to be told by dad when he's snapping a picture of her playing with her stuffies, but then mom is sitting on the bed when "Ariadna sneaks into MY bed and hugs ME" (yes I understand the bed is probably both of theirs, but dad should be in the picture somewhere, too), then there's a picture of what seems to be dad's legs and he's saying "...won't let go of ME".
My thoughts on the illustrations by the author (none of which affect my review):
~ not overly vibrant, but fitting to a make believe story with outfit and hair changes throughout each page
~ some scenes have a lot going on ~ there are way too many penguins hanging around in the street
~ she does not seem to have the same amount of hair in the beginning versus the end when she's not imitating
~ I wish she wasn't showing her nakedness when getting dressed and in bathtub scenes.
Overall, I wish there was a giraffe because they're my favorite, but there was a nice array of animals to keep a child interested, but I'm not sure for how many times. It does do a great job of initiating make believe play.
This is a sweet book. My four year old enjoyed the story. He was stayed engaged throughout. I enjoyed all of the different animals and the descriptions of their behavior! Beautiful illustrations!
