Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book. Samantha Hayes does it again! Although this started off a little slow it picked up halfway through and my jaw stayed dropped the rest of the way. I can’t count the amount of surprises that popped up and now I need a sequel please! Amazing thriller.
Not my cup of tea, lots of secrets and lies and some not so nice characters. Told from the viewpoint of lots of different people and had a horrible ending.
What a book! The development of characters is superb! It is quite a talent to be able to write from different point of views and be so unique and believable. I have loved how the story gets unraveled and we get to know each sister one by one. I always love books where I can see and live from other person's perspective. The build-up, the tension, and the twists are so good! I went back and re-read some previous chapters to see how the book managed to trick me into completely misunderstanding a situation and more than once. It was so well done by the author and despite my super critical brain after reading many mystery books I really didn't see it and blindly walked into each trap. I did see the third one but almost towards the end of it and I had to re-read it again just to confirm my suspicion. I don't remember the last time someone trick me so well in the book.
I love how it is a proper size book and it took me a few days to get through although I did not want to put it down. Many modern books nowadays are too short in my opinion.
The biggest shortcoming to me is the end being wrapped up so quickly and no full closure on the main characters and their motivations. The husbands who played such a big role in the book were just written off. The faith of the secondary characters was emphasized. Why? Instead we should be given as much closure on the sisters and their relationships as in the beginning. By that point we invested way too much in them not to feel sad for their demise. I also didn't find neither Theo nor Finn believable, nor necessary. Theo would have been sufficient because he was very well developed throughout the book, if we just stayed on his path of snooping and "playing" a detective without any sexuality reveals. The chemistry was forced and unbelievable. And yes, one final twist seemed so implausible and made me scratch my head for days. It is left for your imagination and after a few days I could see it a possibility. So well done on that one.
It is a little bit disappointing that the book did not have such a strong ending as the beginning and the middle but I still loved the book and will want to read more by this author.
Thanks to Netgalley for a free copy in exchange of an honest opinion.
The Inheritance - Samantha Hayes
This book was just meh. I wanted to DNF multiple times. The start of the book felt extremely slow and boring. The majority is packed full of family drama told though different POVs, which in all honesty isn't my favourite style of reading. A wild ride, each family member seems to hold their own secrets. However, the last 20-30% of the book is much faster paced, and I enjoyed that section! I especially loved the twist. However, I do feel, was the long drawn out process to get to that drama and twist worth it?
This one was a tough one for me. I wanted to DNF multiple times and had I not been writing a review a probably would have. The start of the book is so slow.
The vast majority of the book is a family drama with the three sisters, their partners and their children. The POV rotates each chapter to another family member.
The last quarter of the book is much faster paced and has many secrets and a major twist.
Overall I thought the book was just too drawn out. I was not looking forward to reading it after I'd set it down. It isnt one I'd recommend to others.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the advanced readers copy in exchange for my honest review.
Normally I really enjoy Samantha's books, but this one was just frankly boring. You can read the last 20% and figure out what is going on, what the big secrets are, and what the big shocking ending is. I skimmed through most of it-held no interest. It was a good ending though.
Thank you so much to Bookouture and NetGalley for my copy of The Inheritance.
This is one of the juiciest thrillers I've read! The Hunter family is an interesting mix with mother, Connie, who seems to just love her daughters so much and she just wants to protect them that it kind of ended up biting her in the ass. Kate, the responsible one. Darby, the middle child who is just trying her best. Bea, the youngest who is just so lost. I feel for all these women. Throughout the whole book I kind of disliked Travis and Adrian. There's just something with the way they were written that was just unlikeable. The whole Theo story - did not like it that much. I kind of get why he has his own chapters but I feel like the novel would've been better without it.
This was such a roller coaster of a read. Anything you think you know, don't trust it. Samantha Hayes will bring you twist and turns all over. This was such a good read!
I really enjoyed this book.
I loved how unhinged each character was in their own way. I liked how each character had their own secret and cross too bare and that this made them almost willing to kill for it either to come out or not come out.
If there is one thing I wish that could be added it would be a trigger warning. It did make part of the book hard for me as something similar has happened to me and it was around this time of year so I am more sensitive to it than I usually am.
I will definitely read more of this authors back lists and future releases.
I thought I had safely buried the past – protecting my family from the secrets I’ve been keeping. But now my lies are exposed in my husband’s will, and one of us will pay for them with their life…
My darling husband, Ray , is gone. My three beautiful daughters and I have come to Scotland to walk the trails we once enjoyed together, hold each other, and cry over our loss.
I have always enjoyed this author's work and once again Samantha Hayes has produced another book that many will enjoy. I would call this a strong family drama with thriller elements thrown in at all the right times to create tension and suspence. We are presented with a quite a lot of red herrings along the way and there is a lot going on here so this does leave the reader turning the pages to find out more. Some very complicated family relationships are presented in the pages, lies deceit and secrets all add up to the telling of this rather complicated family tale. All the characters are well developed and I felt that I did get to know them and is always a bonus, it also personifies the creative attributes of the author and leads to a much more fulfilling read. The last quarter of the book is where the excitement really ramps up, bringing it to a very exciting climax where all the stands of the story come together to provide very satisfactory end.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of the book, all opinions are my own.
“Since his death… it seemed as though there were rumblings stirring beneath the ground. Fingers reaching up through the dirt. The truth working its way out”
WOW! If you’re a fan of Freida McFadden, you will love this fast paced, jaw dropping thriller by Samantha Hayes.
Every time I thought I could second guess what was going to happen, there was another twist I didn’t see coming. The characters I thought I trusted, I shouldn’t have. The ones I despised, I ended up liking! This book kept me on my toes, utterly gripped, right up to the last page. LOVED IT!
Massive thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my advanced copy.
Samantha Hayes provides readers with plenty of food for thought on what it means to be a family.
This compulsively readable novel of domestic suspense has it all; sibling dynamics, complicated parents and the enduring power of love that tries to pull them all together. I loved it and thought it was a fascinating look at families, love and how death and the things in the aftermath can define the lives of those left bereaved.
After Ray Hunter, the patriarch dies, his wife suggests a family reunion. For ten whole days, the Hunter family will spend time grieving while Connie reads the will and strengthens bonds with her three girls and their families.
I’ve noticed that where there’s a will, there’s often a disagreement, but it generally provides the makings of a great story. Inheritance seldom brings out the best in people. It seems that divided fortunes end up creating divided families. Hays has capitalized on this, resulting in a spectacularly tense story.
Two things I noted within the first few chapters: 1) Hayes capably writes to all our senses and 2) Hayes has created a multilayered suspense. The author examines sorrow and heartache and how they are related to a legacy. Her central idea is a dark secret from the past that refuses to stay buried and wreaks havoc in the present. Stuffed in between the multiple POVs and the twisty, tense moments are messages about being true and preserving one’s authentic self and appreciating the present because life turns on a dime. I especially loved the foreshadowing of the corncrake and Grandma’s warning.
Although this is one family reunion I’d not want to attend, it was a truly captivating read. I couldn’t put the book down and was thankful for the light on my Kindle to enable me to read while everyone else was asleep! You must read about the Hunter family. It’s a wild ride. Hang on!
Apprise yourself of triggers.
I was gifted this copy by Bookouture and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
I raced through it this weekend. Such a smart idea. Twisty, warped, credible. Brilliantly plotted and compelling. Deserves to be such a hit.
I absolutely loved this book and even though it was longer than normal, I flew through it which is great as I'd been in a reading slump up until this point! It had me hooked from the very first page.
I'm going to give this 4.5*, as it would have been a 5* apart from a late twist, which I didn't see how it was possible for it to happen, and was really unnecessary in my opinion.
But other than that, it was a superb book!
WOW Now this was one hell of a page turner! It kept my interest from beginning to end and with a jaw dropping ending which I did not see coming. I’ve read all of Samantha Hayes books and this one did not disappoint. It was a fast paced thriller which kept me guessing throughout. I grew to like all the characters who were all keeping a a secret.
The Hunter sisters and their Mum have reunited in their old holiday home their father has just recently died . Once there, secrets are finally spilled and can’t be taken back will all the family survive the fall out.
I really enjoyed this the story is told from different perspectives which helped build the drama. Highly recommend this to everyone who love a good drama thriller.
The hunter sisters have always been close but that has changed since the death of their father Ray. They are all going to be at the family lodge for a holiday and it will be good to catch up. But nothing is as it seems.Their mother Connie needs to be speak to the girls about their father’s will and she knows that things are going to get heated.
Kate is the oldest sister she has a set of twins and her husband Adrian seems to have something on his mind. Darby knows that this isn’t going to be fun times as her & Adrian have a secret that could cause so much hurt to everyone. She is tired of trying to make things work with Travis as she still missed her late husband Chris. She knows that she can’t be honest about her feelings and she fears that Kate will turn on her when she finds out the truth. Bea didn’t want to come as she is trying to figure things out after her boyfriend threw her out. She is pregnant and it wasn’t what she wanted as she was forced by someone that she should have been able to trust. Now that some of the secrets are out things have just become stranger and even more complicated.
How will they all cope now that everything is in the open? Can they go back to being a loving family?
All families have secrets but theirs are complicated and dark.
A good interesting thrilling read.
Thank you Netgalley & the publisher for the ARC copy. This is my voluntary review.
Family drama and contrasting secrets? Yes, please! The matriarch is dead and his family is left to sort out so much in his wake. Captivating domestic thriller with some intriguing characters.
This book is wild. It’s my first time reading this author and she knows how to pack drama into her stories.
The Inheritance follows a family after the death of their father. They are together for a vacation and their mom is not looking forward to sharing with her daughters all of the secrets she and her husband kept from them. But she’s not the only one with secrets.
I loved all of the different POVs and enjoyed the twist at the end. I also love books that explore different family relationships. And while I enjoyed the overall story of this book a lot, I didn’t enjoy some of the additional side stories. It felt like to much for me. I also felt like some of the dialogue seemed unnatural.
Thank you Netgalley for this arc! I can’t wait to read more from this author.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC! I’ve read all of Samantha Hayes books and this one was no different she is the queen of thrillers. This book was so captivating one world WOW! It was brilliant , it was a fast paced and kept me guessing throughout a perfect book for psychological thrillers fans alike, from the very first page I drawn and couldn’t put the book down it was so good I read it in a day! The characters were likeable also.
Overall, I throughly enjoyed this book and all the plot twists that it presented! Another cracking book by Samantha Hayes!
Sometimes what you see is what you get. Sometimes you think you see what you will get. Sometimes you are wrong, oh so wrong.
Those are the feelings I had whilst reading this great story. A lot of people were hiding things and I thought I saw right through them. Yes, of course I did... not. :)
Sometimes there are signs pointing you in the right direction. Or at least you think you have figured out which path to follow... Sometimes you accuse someone of things they did not do. Sometimes you judge a book by its cover. Sometimes you trust the the bad ones and are suspicious of the good ones.
I wonder whether you will be fooled by the author like I was. :)
This is a story about family, love, jealousy and many, many secrets.
My favourite character? I have to pick two this time: Theo and Finn.
Very enjoyable read with many twists and turns. 4 stars
Thank you
Turns out … I had no idea where this book was going … and I loved it!!
A family reunited when the mother calls. Secrets hidden in the depths of someone memories. Sisters who do not seem to close anymore. Husbands found and disappeared. Troublesome children. And a dead man who has his own way of things. This book was a revelation to say the least. I felt thrilled by the story from the first moment. I had an idea of what was supposed to happen. But turns out, it wasn’t quite as expected!!! And the ending … definitely not part of the plan. I had completely missed the truths even when it was somehow written in plain sight in front of me. Oh, how I love being surprised !!!! The action was quite packed. The secrets were slowly getting to the surface and the mystery had his own plan of how it was supposed to go. And the characters … some more complex than the others, some quite predictable in their choices … some completely unexpected in their behaviour!!!! This book was really good!!!! Definitely check it out !!!
