Shannon Hollinger's Maggie Riley series is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. After a case nearly destroyed her, Maggie has been rebuilding her life in rural Maine. She's now got a fiance, and has hired a new deputy who is not exactly welcomed by the locals. Maggie gets a note on her vehicle of a missing girl, when she visits the girl's mom, she's sure it's a hoax. But, something in Maggie's gut tells her this isn't the case. And, as she's digging through this, her Mother decides to visit to dig up the old case and open wounds that Maggie has been trying to heal. Thank you to Bookouture for an advanced reader of this book - the opinions expressed are my own.

Book Title: The Shadow Girl
Series: Chief Maggie Riley #3
Author: Shannon Hollinger
Publisher: Bookouture
Genre: Mystery/Thriller
Pub Date: September 1, 2023
My Rating: 4 Stars
Pages: 330

This is my third Shannon Hollinger but only my second Maggie.
Maggie Riley is the police chief. In quiet isolate small town of Coyote Cove, Maine.
In this story a young pregnant girl who has been missing has just been found dead.
Now Maggie finds a Polaroid photo tucked into the door of her Jeep showing Cassie another missing girl, tied up and covered in bruises. When Maggie investigates, Cassie’s mother insists that her daughter is staying with her Uncle in another town, and that her daughter is seeking attention.
. Maggie known she needs to find the girl in the photo before it’s too late.
Additionally Maggie has a new Lieutenant, Kal, who is an Indian in a town that is not very welcoming..
Then there is Maggie's partner-fiancé Steve who has concerns that his secret past has come back and he doesn't want Maggie to know.
Yikes – next there is her estranged mother who is still grieving over her missing son Brandon’s unsolved case and believes Maggie hasn’t done enough.

At first I struggled to get all these characters clean in mind but once I did I was hooked now cannot wait for next in this series.

I always enjoy reading the author’s notes and Acknowledgements.
In this case, in “A Letter from Shannon’ our {author: Shannon Hollinger] gives us a bit of tease. She says she hopes we enjoyed our stay in Coyote Cove and goes on to say that she cannot wait for us to discover what she has in store for Maggie and the rest of the gang.

Yep! That would be me!

Want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for this early eGalley.
Publishing Release Date scheduled for September 1, 2023.

Filled with secrets, twists and turns to keep you guessing! The third book in the Chief Maggie Riley series picks up with a new Lieutenant being hired by Maggie as she briefly reconnects with her mother and danger lurks around the corner of a new mystery. Maggie is an addictive character, but the secrets surrounding her and her fiance Steve seem to be never ending.

Maggie is determined to get justice for the victims she comes across in her job even as demons knock on her door daily for past indiscretions and heartbreak.

Steve fessed up to some of his past, but this book brings another revelation of more to be told.

Kal is sizing up to be an interesting character all on his own as the new Lieutenant with a past he's not talking about.

🏞Tense hunt for the girl in the 🖼 Polaroid: enjoyably unpredictable😲

4.5🌟stars
This was my second time reading a Maggie Riley thriller and I was happily misled and taken on a tense, winding adventure in rural northern Maine. For me, the central part of the story involving missing teenage girls was the thing that I could not put down. The side plots involving Chief of Police Maggie Riley and her fiance Steve were okay but a bit frustrating; they have more secrets and fears than two people should endure!

The insular small town and the antipathy most of the residents show for Maggie make for heavy atmospheric unease, especially when Maggie's new-hire lieutenant appears and turns into a new target for their hatred. Kal, born and bred in Maine but of East Asian heritage, sticks out like a sore thumb in a community devoid of diversity. I particularly liked the arc of Kal's first week dealing with a challenging case and overt personal threats.

The investigation into a missing girl, who her own mother and boyfriend deny is either missing or in danger, dovetails into some other great stuff involving abuse of authority and a trail of mistreatment of other young women going back for years. Author Shannon Hollinger did a fantastic job keeping me guessing about the villain. I wouldn't actually label Maggie as particularly reckless but she sure does get into dangerous situations and adds to the suspense by heading out on her own to investigate in the backwoods nooks and byways, creating thrills and unease that I loved.

Great location and plot, good secondary characters and a successful police team in the making made this a strong story. Fiance Steve's mysterious background and activities were, for me, the weakest element and left me with an unsatisfying cliffhanger. And I was baffled about what, if anything, this guy does for a living and to fill his days! Apart from that, I found The Shadow Girl a total winner of a thriller.

Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

Wow I gotta just say Shannon Hollinger did it again! I absolutely love her writing it’s phenomenal and so easy to get into. This is like the 4th book I’ve read by her and the 2nd book in the Chief Maggie Riley series and I’m absolutely blown away and I’ll try to wait very patiently for the next one!

Chief Maggie is an awesome character and glad I got to go along for the ride.

Something is very wrong with Coyote Cove will Chief Maggie be able to solve the case of the missing girl once a girl was found dead 2 years after she went missing. Maggie's mother, who she hasn't seen or heard from in more than five years, just suddenly shows up and who is harboring a boatload of secrets she's not sharing either. Why is she listening to this so called investigator?
There is also the new officer (to replace Murphy), Kal, who is keeping some secrets of his own, one being why he had to leave where he was at and came to Coyote Cove to hide out. There's also the story that Kal, who is Indian. We need to know what happened to Kal for him to want to move to the middle of nowhere. What happened to his ex girlfriend? Lastly, there is Steve, Maggie's fiancé, who has been keeping secrets throughout the entire series and now has a whole new secret that may be dangerous to Maggie. Will Maggie forgive him once she finds out the secret?

Thank you Netgalley, Shannon Hollinger, and Bookouture for allowing me to read this ARC of The Shadow Girl. I’m so ready to read more of the series!!!

REVIEW
Thanks to Netgalley and the Publisher for this ARC. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.”

I read and liked the first book in the series, and I was determined to read the next one, and my wish was answered! I asked for the second and third books in the series, but I was only given the third. I was still able to understand what was going on, and I was not confused.
👮🏼‍♀️👮🏼‍♀️
I really liked the storyline and the characters, especially Maggie, the star of the show. This book was really fast-paced, and I didn't get the perp until when the MCs did. I really liked Maggie and I enjoyed her character, her vulnerabilities, and her issues with her asshole parents and her dead brother.
👮🏼‍♀️👮🏼‍♀️
I also enjoyed the crime aspect too and the arrival of Kal Kishore. I can't wait to read more about Maggie, Steve and Kal again. This series is one to look put for with the amazing and complex characters

This is book three in the series. This was a really good read, and I couldn’t put it down. I look forward to reading the next book!

In the small town of Coyote Cove, Maine, Maggie Riley is the Chief of police. For a small town, it’s seen its share of crime. When Maggie receives an envelope with a photo of a teenager that appears to have been kidnapped, she is desperate to find out who it is.

Maggie approaches the local high school looking for clues. Nobody has reported the girl missing and they don’t seem too worried about her. Maggie can’t let the case go that easily. She needs to know that the girl is alive and okay.

Her search reveals a dangerous and secretive group of me in the logging camps. This could be a case that could get Maggie hurt or killed. Will she find the girl and solve the case?

Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

Third book in the Maggie Riley series. The body of a girl assumed two years earlier to be a runaway is discovered, having been somewhere in town for that time. Maggie receives a photo of another girl tied up and bruised and tries to find her before it is too late. This was good, better than the second book, although I am getting a little tired of Steve and his secrets. Interested to read the next book. (I got all 3 at once from NetGalley, so I don't know when the next will be out.) 4 stars.

I am really enjoying this series! From the start of this series, I have been stating that something is wrong with Coyote Cove; there is something seriously sinister going on in this speck of a town out in the wilderness of Maine. Don’t even get me started on all the secrets that everyone in this place is hiding either. Suffice it to say that Coyote Cove is the place where people go to hideout and keep their secrets from becoming exposed. The book summary introduces the primary storylines: the search for a missing girl, Cassie (16yrs old), who no one seems to be worried about and the discovery of the body of a pregnant, teenaged girl, Alicia, who was reported missing two years ago and who everyone thought just ran away.

There are secondary storylines too like the one where Maggie’s mother, who she hasn’t seen or heard from in more than five years, just suddenly shows up and who is harboring a boatload of secrets she’s not sharing either. There is also the one about the new officer (to replace Murphy), Kal, who is keeping some secrets of his own, one being why he had to leave where he was at and came to Coyote Cove to hide out. There’s also the story that Kal, who is Indian, is being subjected to a bunch a racist crap because Coyote Cove is practically all white with a considerable amount of racists @$$#*!%$. Lastly, there is Steve, Maggie’s fiancé, who has been keeping secrets throughout the entire series and now has a whole new secret that may be dangerous to Maggie.

Most of the story flips back and forth between Maggie, Steve, Kal, and Cassie, with a few random chapters from Cassie’s uncle and another character named, She, who appears to be a woman that seems to be helping Maggie find Cassie, but it’s not really clear until much later in the story. Most of the story revolves around the investigation of the missing girl. Maggie doesn’t really get to investigate the murder of the pregnant girl because the case has been taken over by the state police so there are the requisite turf war issues.

Well into the second half, after the discovery of another body, Maggie and Kal have narrowed down where the missing girl probably is but it’s going to be dangerous to go in and try and rescue her. In an all-out effort with many unlikely supporters, Kal and Maggie head off into the wilds that ends in a bit of a surprise for Maggie. It's the final discovery that was the real shock, at least to me it was. Didn't see that one coming, totally thought it was someone else!

A mostly satisfying ending. However, Steve’s secrets have wound him up pretty tight until he’s not thinking clearly and this can't be a good thing and will most likely lead to no good in the next installment. Initially, I liked Steve, but throughout the series, he has just crossed too many lines, in my opinion, and he is now just way too suspicious for my liking. I get the feeling that he is just going to turn out to be one of those fiancés that you don’t discover his double life until it’s too late.

I want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for sending me this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

This story is told in multiple POVs and is fast-paced with a twisty mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat. This is the first book I've read in the series and had no trouble jumping right in, and now I'm definitely curious to read the previous two books.

There are plenty of secrets to uncover and even more hinted at, that hopefully will get revealed in the next book. It sucked me in and kept me up to the wee hours of the morning just so I could see how it ended.

I really enjoyed this book! It was fast and entertaining for several reasons. It was easy to follow who each character was and I loved finding the connections among them as a way to guess “who did it.” Absolutely everyone has secrets in this book. I loved it.

Gripping to the end!

Shadow Girl is book 3 in the Chief Maggie Riley series, however, it's the first book in the series and by Shannon Hollinger I have read, and it had me totally engaged from the start and stuck on the couch all day reading not wanting to put it down!

While you could read this book without having the read the first two as I have as the main story/mystery in the book does not required background from the first, I think there are some details that may be in the first books that would give extra context, for example, Steve, Maggie’s finance, I found myself wondering what he actually does for a living as there was no reference to what he was spending his day doing while she was working to find a killer.

Each of the main characters, Chief Maggie Riley, her new Lieutenant, her fiancé, all have secrets they are keeping, we get snippets into these, and they are nice teasers that will keep you coming back for the next book so see if more will be revealed.

Overall, this was a great read and I have just downloaded the first two book which are available on Kindle Unlimited.

3.5 ⭐️! I really enjoy this series following Chief Maggie Riley! Another mystery different from the last. This one did a great job of setting up the next in the series… which will hopefully include details on getting to the bottom of some lingering secrets…

The Chief Maggie Riley series is told from multiple points of view. In the first book in the series, it took me awhile to get into this writing style. But, I have to say by book 3, it works well.
Maggie is looking for answers as to what happened when a teenage girl shows up dead after 2 years. Then. another teenage girl goes missing. With so much going on in Maggie’s personal life, can she handle the pressure she is under?
We are also left wondering what is going to happen with Maggie and Steve’s upcoming wedding plans. And, will Steve share the ominous situation he is in with Maggie.
I’m glad Maggie has a co-worker that seems to fitting in well. But, he has his own secrets he is hiding from Maggie.
So many secrets, lies, suspense and thrilling moments in the Chief Maggie Riley series.
Another intriguing installment in the series. Looking forward to the next book!
Many thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are solely my own.
