Unputdownable thriller. Shocking and twisted plots. A teenage girl dead and another missing. Chief Maggie is at her best. I loved the multiple points of view, which only make the suspense more chilling. Throughout the book I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. Loved it. Looking forward to reading more.
This series keeps improving as Maggie Riley investigates missing girls and a murder. The developing characterisation is very good, I like the introduction of Kal, and I like the clever plotting. Told from multiple viewpoints, it works really well. There is plenty of suspense, fast pacing and the ending is wrapped up very neatly. How much longer can Steve keep his secret from Maggie, I wonder? Another well written thriller from the author and I look forward to the next episode, set in Coyote Cove, Maine. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for my approval to read and review this book.
Chief Maggie Riley returns in a 3rd book. She has a new colleague joining her at the Coyote Cove Police Department, Lieutenant Kal Kilshore. They are investigating a body that has been found at a waste dump. They uncover a mystery as to why she was there. Maggie discovers a photo on her jeep of another girl that has gone missing. In a race against time, they try to find her and bring the culprit to justice. It is a fast paced book that is full of twists and turns with a surpise ending. I will recommend the book.
The Shadow Girl (Chief Maggie Riley Book 3) by Shannon Hollinger was a slow burn and read for me. It took a while to get to the end and wasn't as engaging or fast-paced as books 1 and 2. Though, I cannot wait to see what is going to happen with Steve and his situation.
The story is told from multiple POVs. I do like this series and enjoy getting to know the characters and what secrets they hold.
I would recommend this series and this author.

Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for access to this arc in exchange for my honest review.
This is the third book following Chief Maggie Riley that I read. Filled with suspense, discovering secrets they all seem to be keeping. It is so sad to know how crap mothers in this book are. I was just a bit disappointed in the ending. I am impatient to know more about the secret Steve is keeping from Maggie. Hopefully the 4th book won't be too long or I'll forget all about it when it comes out hahah.
Wow what a phenomenal read!
Great characters, well written and an amazing plot.
Breakneck speed, full of twists and turns and terror.
This moved at a great pace and kept me guessing and reading way too late.
Unputdownable!
Amazing read!
We are back in Maine, riding shotgun with Maggie Riley for the third time. She is going above and beyond to try and catch another culprit.
In the meantime, I am still waiting for the revelations of the secrets both Maggie and her boyfriend Steve are hiding. Each time I turn a page, I am hoping I will be one step closer, but no. LOL; The author keeps them close to her chest leaving us pining...
Little by little the author is letting us in, but on the other hand she adds more mysteries too. Argh LOL, but I love it. I hope she writes really fast because I want book 4, but I wonder whether that will be me out of my misery. On the one hand I hope so, but on the other I pray it will not.
I love the new kid on the block. I admired the way they handled themselves and gained respect in a very hostile environment.
I also see a change in the relationship between Maggie and the villagers. Is it a good one or a bad one? That would be telling so I will leave that for you to find out.
And what about Steve....?
After each book it's becoming harder and harder to wait for the next part. Great story. 5 stars
Thank you
WARNING: Before you even open this book, find a quiet spot, get comfy and settle down because you'll be in for the long haul!
I have to say that out of all three books in the series so far this is the one that had me in the tightest headlock and second guessing everything the whole way through and that's saying something as I absolutely loved the first and second installments and didn't think they could get any better!
The body of a young pregnant girl is found amongst piles of rubbish. Maggie feels certain that the body is that of a local girl who went missing two years ago at the age of fifteen. A suspected runaway, did Maggie miss something, did she investigate the case enough, has the girl actually been right under her nose all this time?
Another brutally winters day starts in the quiet town of Coyote Cove with Chief Maggie Riley finding a polaroid photo attached to her front windscreen, the photo of a young girl beaten and gagged. No girl has been reported missing, no one seems to be missing her so who is she and what has happened to her? Maggie thinks she's another local girl, Cassie but her Mum isn't worried, shes sent her away to stay with her uncle and she's done stunts before just for attention.. why is Maggie the only one worried?
In this book, no#3 of the series we start to learn a bit more about Maggie's new lieutenant Kal. Not being made to feel overly welcome due to his Indian heritage, Kal has to fight his way through the hatted to earn respect but can he earn it before he needs it the most ?
Alongside Maggie's workload, her relationships are also paramount to this series and this book starts to explore her relationship with her mother. Even though hard hitting and quite painful to read it really starts bringing these characters more to life and digs deeper into what makes them tick. The character development is already spot on but the drip feed and build up of information is just superb to read. Who doesn't love a bad ass main character with soft heart, a mysterious lieutenant who slowly starting to open up and the perky, cuddly Sue who seems to be the mother hen of the team.
Steve is still keeping secrets and is now starting to panic that his past has come back to haunt him. Can he keep it from Maggie any longer?
There is so much going on in one story but my God what a story it is. Everything runs alongside each other perfectly and seamlessly and is wrapped up just brilliantly at the end with that feeling of 'give me more immediately'
I CANNOT wait for book #4! Will we finally start learning what secrets are hiding below the surface?
The biggest thanks to netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC.
Chief Maggie Riley is always on the receiving end of trouble. When she finds the picture of a local girl left at the station in which the girl is bound and beaten, she feels the instant desire to find the poor victim. However, the girl's mother and others think this is a faked picture and the girl is staying with her uncle off the grid. This begins Maggie's hunt for answers. It places her in dangerous situations, but her new deputy seems ready and able to watch her back. Meanwhile, Maggie is dealing with a new development in her brother's cold case that brings her mom to town. In the midst of this, she is always trying to plan a wedding. It's another heart-stopping mystery.
Again we continue to learn more about what brought Maggie to Coyote Cove. We meet her terrible mother, learn more about what happened to her brother and tore her family apart, and learn a lot about Steve's past. I love that these books have two plots, minimum, the ongoing longer story about our main characters plus new characters for the current plot. This one was really exciting as she raced to prevent another murder from happening after discovering the first victim, and it was really action packed. I am hooked on this series and can't wait for the next one to come out!
I really enjoyed this and read it ad a standalone. There's certainly plenty mysteries and it seems everyone has a secret. I liked the characters, eve though they all seem a bit shady and you don't really get to know them too well. That could easily be because they've been further introduced in the previous installments though. I was really thrown by the whole racism storyline...... it just seemed really pointless and underdeveloped. Generally if people are racist then they don't just tell you not to sit next to them and then rally when you need help....... it minimized a really serious topic and didn't account for any of the trauma and risk and danger it actually causes. It also adds absolutely nothing to the storyline so I've no clue why it was thrown in. Otherwise, it was quite a quick and easy read.
Coyote Cove is a town on the edge of nowhere. It's an isolated and insular community that doesn't take to outsiders no matter how well intentioned they may be. But even small towns have secrets and sometimes only an outsider can uncover the truth.
OVERVIEW: After relocating to Coyote Cove for a fresh start, former detective Maggie Riley is now the chief of police. Half the town hates her and the other half hasn't made up its mind. But Maggie is determined to do the job right. After the body of a teenaged girl who was thought to have been a run away turns up, Maggie is second-guessing how she handled the investigation. Now she's determined to find out where the girl has been and how she wound up dead so close to home. At the same time, someone has left her an unmarked envelope with the photo of another teenage girl, bound and bruised, who may or may not be connected to the murdered girl. Can Maggie and her new deputy, Kal find out who killed the first girl and save the latest victim before it's too late?
SUMMARY: THE SHADOW GIRLS by Shannon Hollinger is the third book in the Chief Maggie Riley series, although it can be read as a standalone. The book has multiple storylines with some connecting and others seemingly random page fillers. First, there is the main case focusing on the girl in the photograph which connects with the murdered girl. However, there are also other mysteries, so many mysteries....too many in fact. Every chapter seems to end on a question mark; what is Steve hiding from Maggie what is Kal running away from, why does Nicole want to help Maggie? There are so many storylines that it's difficult to get invested in any of them. It's especially difficult to stay interested in the various narrative threads when none of the characters are thought out enough to be really interesting.
Maggie Riley, the main character is 'wishy-washy', indecisive about her choices both professionally and personally. Her fiancee, Steve is supposedly head over heels in love and determined to protect her at all costs, but it's never clear why he feels this way. There is nothing about Maggie or their relationship that seems to possess any passion or even interest. Kal, the new deputy suffers from the same fate as do most of the other players in the story. They are outlines rather than fully realized characters so their actions make no sense but readers won't know enough about any of them to really care.
THE SHADOW GIRL has a mystery at its core but it's not hard to figure out 'who done it'. There is no suspense or thrills to be found. But there are mysteries....oh so many.
I can't get enough of this series. This author is amazing. Chief Maggie Riley gets a call they have found a scull will it be her brother.? and she has a new police officer Kal. Maggie is left a Photo. of a young girl her mum does not believe it is her as she is at her brothers staying but another girl went missing and never been found the town people are still being cold. Steve gets a phone call of someone he never wants to hear from. can Maggie find the girl before it is too late? I so hope there is more to come. I love this series.
Book Three as we once again join Chief Maggie Riley at Coyote Cove a small town with a lot going on.
With her troubled past to deal with and the body of a pregnant girl, this is unmistakably the best out of the three in the series.
Dark gripping and a touch of Maggie humour. A good crime thriller with a fabulous end. love this series
A disturbing photograph takes Chief Riley on another journey through the darkness of the tiny hometown. No one is really willing to open up to her, and it does not help her to have a new deputy who is an outsider, as well as not being white. It does not exactly help that the case has something to do with a dodgy logging camp, and the police is most definitely welcome there.
Both Maggie and her fiance Steve are troubled by their past, and it becomes a huge problem for both of them since the past has really been catching on. Both of their mothers are around, and that is something neither of them wants. Steve's former best friend is also lurking in the bushes, and this means trouble.
The more I read about this town and all the people in it, the more I want to dig deeper into their pasts and minds. Absolutely fantastic character growth, in fact it is not easy to find this skillfully written. The characters are still holding back quite a lot though, so I am expecting more and more by each page I read. Hopefully Shannon Hollinger never stops writing!
This is a mystery that will keep you guessing until the end.
The characters are well developed and the descriptions of scenes well written.
Come to a small town in Maine and discover the pros and cons of small town living. Right now, murder and mayhem are keeping law enforcement busy.
Third in this series featuring Maggie Riley. Finally we begin to unravel some of the secrets Steve and Maggie are hiding while at the same time trying to solve a murder.
This is the third book in the Chief Maggie Riley series. It was just as good, if not better than the first two I absolutely love this series. It takes place in the remote town of Coyote Cove Maine. I love the isolated setting and the harsh conditions Maggie faces.
Maggie has her hands full with the men in the town who feel she is not the MAN for the job. In this episode, Maggies mom shows up after being estranged for years. There are so many secrets flying around that no one is to be trusted. Maggie has hired a new Police officer, Kal, who happens to be Indian. That also sets off some fireworks in town. Kal is hiding his own secrets. Maggie's fiance, Steve, is hiding a bunch of secrets that are now starting to follow him to his life in Coyote Cove. Oh my. What a tangled web we have here. I love the new characters introduced in the third book. I cannot wait for the fourth in this series !!. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC. I highly recommend this book.
Welcome back to Coyote Cove, Maine, where Maggie Riley is the police chief. Maggie traded her old career as a high-powered detective for the quiet and isolation of this tiny town, but there’s been a surprising amount of action since she arrived. The third installment in this series follows the successful formula of the previous two books. A missing girl has just been found dead, and then Maggie finds a Polaroid photo tucked into the door of her Jeep depicting another missing girl, tied up and covered in bruises. Maggie is desperate to find the missing girl before it’s too late while also breaking in her new lieutenant Kal and dealing with her estranged mother.
This is another high-stakes crime thriller, with lots of cliffhanger chapters and potential suspects. The mystery is compelling but once again, the characters are what really make this series! Maggie is a total bad ass, tenacious and determined and taking no crap from anyone, all while struggling to recover from past trauma. Her fiancé Steve wants to protect her but has a secret past of his own (and you finally get to find out what it is in this book). Maggie’s admin Sue is fantastic, and Kal the new lieutenant is an appealing addition to this small police department. Maggie’s brother’s story isn’t wrapped up, so it’s a safe bet there will be at least one future installment of this series, and I am looking forward to it!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me an advance copy of this book.
The Shadow Girl (Chief Maggie Riley Book 3) by Shannon Hollinger Another intense and multilayered case for Maggie and her team to solve. Interesting and unique cases to be solved and likeable and reliatable characters and despicable villians. Vivid descriptions of the weather, landscape and forests of Maine. Enjoying this series more and more. Hopefully Steve's past secrets will not negatively impact his relationship with Maggie. Kal is proving to be a good fit as Maggie's coworker. He does have secrets of his own which come to light in the next book in the series (hint, hint).
Thank you to the author, Shannon Hollinger; publisher, Bookouture, and Netgalley for the opportunity to preview the book.
