Probably her best thriller yet! Evans wife Lola dies and their new housekeeper is convinced he killed her. His daughter, Jessica appears to be easily influenced by Evan; or is she?!? Shocking connections all these characters have and who is really the bad guy?!? Good job!
Well, that definitely was a dark and disturbing twist! I was captivated from the start, this was a real page turner.
'I need to make sure I don't slip up and tell anyone the truth'..
Synopsis
Evan's wife and Jessica's mum recently passed away from 'taking a fall on the stairs', but is this what really happened, or did someone push her?
Needing help around the house after his wife's passing, Evan hires Ariel to be their housekeeper. But what Evan doesn't know is that Ariel also has a secret, a hidden agenda - she thinks Evan killed his wife, and she can't let him get away with murder.
Thoughts
What a twist, a dark twist but such a good one! I thought it was one person throughout but was entirely incorrect! This book really kept me on my toes with trying to figure out what actually happened.
I loved the different points of view and the diary entries, which all come together to the twisty conclusion.
I definitely would love to see another book with what happens next after that ending!

Like all Emily Shiner books, I devoured this one in less than 24 hours!! The Wife in the Photo is full of unexpected twists, characters you don't know if you love or hate, and an ending that I never could have predicted. I've read all of this author's previous books, but this one is my favorite!

The Wife in The Photo by Emily Shiner - 4.5/5 ⭐
Well goodness gracious me. I'm not even sure I can review this in a way that is as perfect as the book?! The whole book FLOORED me. I was enthralled by the entire thing. Characters? amazing. Plot? Phenomenal. Story? Fantastic. Ending? HOLY HELL!
This creepy as hell thriller by Shiner is an absolutely flawless piece of writing. I cannot express how amazing this book is. I was HOOKED. I can honestly say, this is the best ARC I've had the privilege of reading. I will 100% be buying this book for my shelf.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookoture for allowing me to read this ARC - this is an HONEST review from my own personal opinion.
I had the opportunity to read this as an advanced reader from NetGalley, thanks NetGalley.
Emily Shiners “The Wife in the Photo”, is a page turning thriller about a twisted family. The wife (Lola), is dead, but who killed her? This is by far one of my favorite books I’ve read to date! Just when you think you have everything figured out, another twist or turn happens. I did think it ended abruptly, I would love to see a sequel, who knows! If you like thrillers, this book is for you!
I really enjoyed this book. I loved the short chapters, the multiple POVs and the diary entries. The characters were well developed and it was very suspenseful.
✨ Spoiler free character list ✨
Lola: mother; deceased
Evan: father; chief of Police
Jessica: daughter
Miriam: Evan’s assistant
Ariel: Evan’s housekeeper
• My only con is that I feel that the title of this book doesn’t really represent the book.
Evan has recently lost his wife and is having a hard time juggling work as a police chief, raising his teenage daughter, Jessica, and running their household. It’s no surprise that he’s looking for a housekeeper to lessen his load. His assistant at work, Miriam, recommends Ariel, a friendly woman who’s a bit plain but efficient. Everything appears to be going well, save for the usual teenage drama from Jessica. In the passages from Ariel’s perspective, she makes it clear right away that she thinks Even killed his wife and that Jessica needs protection. We also see from Evan’s perspective, where he continually alludes to a non-descript secret, along with diary entries from Lola and Jessica. Lola was planning on leaving Evan but was killed before she could. Jessica misses her mother and is wary of her father.
It all paints a specific picture that seasoned readers will know is not as it seems, almost from the get-go. It’s an entertaining story with some surprises thrown in, but they’re not hard to see coming. That doesn’t keep you from enjoying the book and seeing how it will all play out, though. The sequence of events towards the end is a bit full-force and doesn’t match the pace of the book leading up to it. But I really like the story and would definitely read more from this author. If I hadn’t read stories with similar trickiness, I might have been more shocked by the twists, and I think other readers will be. I’m glad I chose to read this one!
I read this as an advanced reader from net galley!
Did you enjoy gone girl, this one is very similar! Multiple POV helps the reader solve the crime. If you are a true crime fan this is an easy read. The case is solved very quickly if you know what to look for.
Heart pounding thriller that left me on the edge of my seat. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Definitely one of the best books this year.
Thankyou to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.
I really enjoy this book.
I loved the short chapters, the multiple POV and the diary entries.
I think the characters we were well set out.
This book had lies, cheating, betrayal, deceit and back stabbing and i really enjoyed it!
I highly recommend this to everyone who wants awesome new thriller that has you on the edge of your seat.
I could not put this book down and was glued to my Kindle.

“The Wife in the Photo” is a thriller by Emily Shiner. I though the premise of this book sounded really interesting - why would a person want to find the truth out about a dead wife? It did give me “Gone Girl” and “The Couple Next Door” vibes, but due to reading those books, I was able to rather quickly figure out not only “who done it,” but also had an idea about the why. This book is told from multiple POVs - Ariel (the housekeeper), Evan (the husband), Lola (the deceased wife, albeit through a diary), and Jessica (the daughter, again through a diary). The characters in this book were easy to keep apart. However, I found the last chapter to be quite unnecessary - if it had ended after Evan’s last chapter, I’d’ve been satisfied. I found Evan to be extremely clueless - or maybe unobservant - especially when he kept noting that he was a cop. Overall, interesting idea and possibly an interesting twist, but I wanted to like this book more than I did. A 3.25 rating overall.
The wife in the photo was such a twisted thriller with lots of twists and turns. I was hooked from the prologue right until the very jaw dropping ending. There was so many red herrings had me guessing until the end. I thought I knew how it was going to end but I was so wrong fantastic I highly recommend this to everyone who loves a book which will have you gobsmacked at the end.
I've lost count of the number of jaw-dropping twists in The Wife in the Photo by Emily Shiner. Everytime that I thought I knew the direction of the storyline, Shiner expertly pulled another twist that I did not see coming.
The Wife in the Photo is a fast-paced, stand alone novel by Emily Shiner that begins on the night that Lola Warner dies. The reader is aware from the opening pages that someone has helped Lola to fall but who or why remains unknown.
The reader is given the PoV of Lola via her diaries, Evan, Jessica (loved the viewpoint of a teenger being included) and Ariel, providing us with a detailed view of the family and an insight into their secrets. But can we really rely on this information?
Just brilliant!
The Wife in the Photo is a twisted tale that you won’t want to put down.
You will think you know who’s who and who’s doing what but will you really know?
I can not wait to read more by Emily Shiner. I love these types of stories.
I really loved this author's writing and was hooked from the prologue. The plot was fast paced and easy to follow. It took me approximately 4.5 hours to read, which is the perfect length for this plot.
I really liked the relationship between the father and daughter. The author actually gave the teenager a voice-- which doesn't happen in many books. I really loved the character development for Jessica.
I feel like the twists in the book were easy to see coming, but I enjoyed them none the less. Without spoiling it, Evan was a complete idiot and should not be a detective if he could not figure out who Ariel was.
Ariel wants to help Jessica. Lola is killed. Evan seems guilty. A host of secrets keep this novel intriguing. Red herrings kept me guessing. Realistic characters add to the story. This would make a great movie. I like this talented author and this publisher. This book was sent to me electronically by Netgalley for review.
