An absolute page turner .plot twists and turns like a serpent throughout the entire book, keeping readers guessing until the very end.
The novel is divided into alternating chapters narrated by Evan and Ariel in the present then Lola through her diary entries in the past. This narrative structure creates suspense and allows readers to see the events from different perspectives, leading to numerous twists and turns throughout the book.
This Novel can be categorized as a psychological thriller due to its exploration of the human psyche and the unsettling mind games that take place between the characters. The book delves into the darker aspects of human nature.
This one started off strong and I was engaged for the first 20% but it went downhill from there. It’s very much a slow burn. It was very repetitive and I had the full storyline figured out in the first couple of chapters. I found it very stilted and boring and there was no suspense or thrill in the way of twists. The characters were just awful and I couldn’t relate to any of them. The outcome very much left the listen incomplete. Unfortunately this wasn’t for me.

5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I have read a few of Shiners novels and they always delivers. She draws you in the first chapter.
Lola is dead haven fallen from the stairs of her home. Her husband Evan would be considered a suspect if accused. They also have a daughter Jessica.
The novel draws us in with diaries from Lola and Jessica. Evan hires a housekeeper to attend to the home and she has her own motives.
Full of twists and turns until the very last sentence! If you love a good binge worthy, fast paced psychological thriller I highly recommend this one.

******************************************************
I pick up the photograph from their mantlepiece and carefully wipe away the dust. The beautiful wife. Supposedly happily married and enjoying a family vacation. I know her husband killed her. And I’m going to make him pay…
This is my first job as a housekeeper, but Evan Warner doesn’t need to know that. It’s the first of many lies I’ll tell him. He just lost his wife, Lola, and now he and his young daughter Jessica are adrift. But no amount of cleaning will rid this house of the secrets that have seeped into the cracks. I never forgave Lola for what she did to me. But I can’t let Evan get away with her murder.
In their impressive home, I busy myself preparing meals and peeking at carelessly discarded mail, looking for proof of his crimes. Evan hovers and I’m sure he is watching me… even as I bond with Jessica. But whenever he catches us alone together, his face darkens. I realize I have to get her out of this house before it’s too late for her, too.
Then I find Lola’s diary, tucked away in a closet out of sight. Her words, hastily scrawled on these pages, change everything I thought I knew about this family. As I hear footsteps on the stairs, I know I’m trapped. And I’m in more danger now than ever before…
The Wife in the Photo is a totally twisty psychological thriller guaranteed to keep you up all night. Fans of Freida McFadden, Gone Girl and The Couple Next Door will find it impossible to put down.
This is one seriously twisted book that will have you amazed at the characters’ actions and wondering what the heck they could possibly do next. The description of the book is a hunt but a very subtle hint at what is going on - I read it in one fell swoop as it was very fast-paced and the ending? WOW

“I pick up the photograph from their mantlepiece and carefully wipe away the dust. The beautiful wife. Supposedly happily married and enjoying a family vacation. I know her husband killed her. And I’m going to make him pay…”
Yes! A story about revenge that is so full of evil that it captivates you. Our main characters are Evan and his daughter Jessica. They have just lost their wife and mother Lola due to a fall that took her life. Things are now very different in the home and in hopes of returning to somewhat of a normal life, and at the recommendation of his assistant, Evan hires Ariel as a housekeeper. Her job is quite simple. Clean and cook meals for the two of them. However, Ariel has a secret and will continue to tell lies in order to maintain her secret. Getting the job with Evan and his daughter is exactly where she needed to be as she has a past with Lola. There is something that Ariel needs to get absolution about. What could have caused Ariel to want to work with Lola’s family so bad? Is it just that she wants to better understand Lola’s death better? This book is well written with characters that are well developed and flawed almost too much. The twists and turns are breathtaking and keep you engrossed and entertained from page one. The ending is the best part of this book. I have NEVER read a book where the ending caught me so off guard. While it was fairly easy to predict the outcome, it was a great read overall.. Everything was tied up and no questions left unanswered. This is definitely a book that will have psychological thriller fans running to get their hands on a copy on the books release date.
Emily Shiner is a brilliant and talented writer. That is evident in this book. Her ability to tell a story from three POV’s and keep the chapters continuously focused on starting where the previous chapter left off.. However, there were a couple of cons as well. Evans character was just not likable at all. The author may have done that Intentionally but either way it really bogged down my ability to get to e about or is she simply trying to seek mere answers to Lola’s death? The twists and turns are breathtaking and keep you engrossed and entertained from page one. The ending is the best part of this book. I have NEVER read a book where the ending caught me so off guard. While it was fairly easy to predict the outcome, it was a great read overall.. Everything was tied up and no questions left unanswered. This is definitely a book that will have psychological thriller fans running to get their hands on a copy on the books release date.

Thank you to NetGalley as well as the author and publisher for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my unbiased and honest review
A definite page turner although I didn’t like any of the characters!! It was far fetched in parts and I felt some of the characters were not at all believable but I still enjoyed it and would recommend for a twisty suspenseful thriller book with an unexpected ending x
Thanks to #NetGalley and #Bookouture for the ARC of #TheWifeInThePhoto by #EmilyShriner. This thriller messed with my head, but in a good way. It was so dark and twisted I had no clue or would end the way it did. Thoroughly enjoyed it!!!
Evan’s wife, Lola, and Jessica’s mother falls to her death. Was it an accident or was she pushed? This dark and twisty novel keeps you guessing from the beginning to the end. This book is about lies, secrets, revenge, murder and dysfunctional people told through multiple viewpoints.
It was truly a page turner.
Thank you Bookouture and Net Galley.
I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first time probably ever in reading thousands of thrillers that I am able to guess the culprit and the twist a few chapters in. That's not a knock on the author tho, I was still interested enough to finish the book, just that it was so obvious staring me in the face.
Emily Shiner’s The Wife in the Photo is a story of revenge and redemption. Lola falls to her death when she was on the verge of leaving her husband for an affair he was having with someone much younger. In the aftermath of her death, her household is in shambles, so her widowed husband, Evan, decides to hire a housekeeper to help keep it clean and put food on the table. At the recommendation of his assistant, Evan hires Ariel. Ariel has secrets of her own and getting the job keeping house for Evan is exactly what she needs to redeem what happened in her past. There is a connection between Ariel and Lola. Did they have a horrible past that tore them apart? Was Ariel a friend seeking to find answers about what happened the day Lola died? Or is Ariel put in the household for another sinister reason?
There are several twists and turns in this one, and there are some disconnects in what happens at the climax of the story. Without any spoilers, I also felt the story wrapped up with some loose threads that aren’t tied up in the story. The author has another book promoted at the end, but it’s not a continuation of this story like you would think based on how it ended. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the advanced copy. Opinions expressed are my own. This book is set for publication on September 6, 2023.

The Wife In The Photo starts off like many other thrillers, but nothing prepares you for the twists that occur. Although I figured out one of the plot twists early on, I didn’t expect the other twists that took place along with it. I thought I had it all figured out, but that ending crept up on me and knocked me off my feet. When reading this book, keep in mind that even when you feel like you know what’s going on, Emily Shiner has a twist just lurking in the shadows, waiting for you to let your guard down!
I'd like to thank Bookouture, Emily Shiner, and NetGalley for an advanced copy for an honest review.
I hated Evan. He is a recent widower, after losing his wife during a vacation. He is whiny and annoying and the reason I couldn't finish/enjoy the audiobook.
I didn't love Jessica or the housekeeper either. But the story is twisty and I obviously liked it enough to try and read it again in book form.
What an amazing, addictive read, I literally read this book in one sitting I was that hooked, I absolutely love this author her books just keep getting better and better.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC of this book. I didn't like it at all. I found it to be repetitive, tedious and exhausting. The twists were predictable and none of the characters had any redeeming qualities. It started out with promise but quickly went downhill. I would not recommend it. This is my honest review and I give it 2 1/2 stars but rounded it to 3.
this was such an interesting twisty novel! when evan’s wife lola dies after falling (or being pushed?) down the stairs, evan hires a new housekeeper, ariel, to help clean and cook for his daughter. ariel suspects evan has more to do with lola’s death than he let on. and she finds some suspicious items while cleaning that point to that being the case.
the reason i didn’t give this book higher than 3 stars is partly because unreliable narrators are not my jam. no fault to the story or the author, i just tend not to rate those books as high. the other main reason is that all the characters spoke out loud to themselves when they were alone, and i didn’t really find that to be believable. i loved the story-telling, the characters were all pretty relatable, and the twist was great!
recommended to anyone who likes a good domestic suspense thriller!
3/5 stars!
This was an amazing suspense thriller. It was fairly easy to pinpoint who killed Lola but the twists and turns that Evan, Jessica, and Ariel go through were so much fun to read. Would definitely recommend! Thanks NetGalley for the early access.
Oh what a deliciously evil and diabolical story this is, and with a surprise ending. Father and daughter, Evan and Jessica, lose their beloved wife and mother Lola when she falls down a set of stairs to her death. Though the adjustment is difficult for each of them, they struggle to find normalcy. When Evan hires Ariel for cooking and household duties, the situation improves for all of them. And for a while, all seems to go well. That is, until Evan senses that Ariel has some ulterior motive for taking the job. Told from the points of view of Evan, Jessica, Lola's diary, and Ariel, the reader does not know which unreliable narrator to believe. Through a series of twists and turns, the ending will leave the reader stunned.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this advance copy.
Thank you Bookouture and Net Galley for an early copy of The Wife in the Photo. I am in SHOCK!!!! I Never expected this book to take this turn. WOW, WHAT DID I JUST READ??? There was a major twist that I kind of figured out late in the book. Then the violence happened which was very detailed. I am still in shock with the last chapters of this book, Again I Never expected it. This will stay with me for a loooong time. Be prepared for a WILD RIDE!!!!!
Thank you to NetGalley for the change to review this book in exchange for an honest review!
In 'The Wife in the Photo' by Emily Shiner, a blend of mystery and family dynamics unfolds. After Lola's passing, Evan, the husband, and Jessica, the daughter, struggle to cope. They enlist Ariel, a mysterious helper with hidden motives, intensifying the intrigue surrounding Lola's fate. Despite its moments of slowness and repetition, the story captivates. However, the conclusion for me was just too far from plausible. It is a 2.5star read
