Vanessa is a wealthy entrepreneur who recently went through a terrible divorce. She decides to undertake volunteer work and works at a hospice and a halfway house for guys who are out of employment and living on the streets.
She becomes a confidante for a woman in hospice and vows to help the woman find her kid, who was given up for adoption.
Her sister arrives on the scene just as everything appears to be going well. There were many moments in the second part of this novel that had my head whirling around, and I went back to make sure I wasn't missing anything! Wow, what a twist! In the end, there is no hint of the twist.
The plot is fantastic and the writing is brilliant. I never would have predicted the outcome. To avoid giving anything away, I won't say too much, but this is exactly what a psychological thriller should be.
The Mistake I Made by Sam Hepburn is a suspenseful and intriguing story.
Hepburn created interesting, well written and well developed characters. It had exceptional twists and turns throughout.
The plot was fantastic and the twists definitely have the shock factor, which I love and they kept me turning the pages.
From the first page until the last I was completely immersed in the storyline, it was a gripping read.
It's incredibly compelling and had me hooked from the very first page. I couldn't put it down and didn't want it to end.

My Review:
Enjoyed!!!! I want to start off by saying that I have read this author before I have liked all her other books. If I had to rank them though this would come in last for me. I’m not sure what it was about this book that didn’t give me that spark like her other ones did. Even though I thought this was a great read there was something lacking in this one for me. I’m not sure what that was. There were a few characters that I felt could’ve been better. The big thing for me was that blurb. It is what drew me to this but I felt it was misleading a little. I thought it was going to go one way in my head but it went the total opposite direction. Now with all that being said I really loved that ending. It was shocking and twisted just the way I like them. It took me completely by surprise and my mind was blown. I will definitely be reading more by this author.
In conclusion, the plot, the characters and all the twists in this book made this book an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 4 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️
The Mistake I Made is a tense psychological suspense read. Vanessa Dunn has her own terror design business and has decided to do some voluntary work by visiting hospice patients and helping in a homeless community shelter. .My interest was held throughout as they were so many suspicious character.s in this intriguing plot
I am STUNNED! I was totally blindsided! There’s me, thinking I’d worked it out and then a HUGE twist hits and it’s the first of many, as this incredible plot unravels like a coiled spring 😮
The main protagonist, Vanessa, is struggling to trust after a divorce that broke her heart. Her mother is in a home with dementia and, despite her thriving business, she’s struggling for a sense of purpose in her personal life and chooses to volunteer in a hospice and a homeless shelter. Nothing mind-blowing there, right? Oh no, SO WRONG!
That’s really all I can say, without spoiling this for everyone else, because, believe me, you HAVE to read this book!
An intense and gripping story, that literally had me holding my breath in parts, gasping with shock and feeling deep sadness for the past events that lead to what ultimately happens.
Every character and the intricate plot line is well written and relevant. It’s one of those books where you sit and reflect once you get the end and the absolute genius of the plot hits you over and over again.
5 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Sam Hepburn and Bookouture for an ARC in return for an honest review.
From the very first page, The Mistake I Made had my attention and I couldn't let myself put it down until I finished it. Sam Hepburn takes you on an emotional and thrilling rollercoaster with every sharp turn that proves what you thought you knew was wrong. He delivers a shell-shock of an ending that will leave you reeling with disbelief. The Mistake I Made was an outstanding piece of work by Sam Hepburn and I look forward to reading more of his work.
This book had me a nervous wreck! It was great! I could not help but look at people at knew and make sure they are who they say they are! This book had all the twist and turns at the exact right time. It kept me on the edge and holding my breath! Be careful who you trust!
With the stinging realizations that come with a new divorce, especially the kind with a cheating husband, Vanessa finds herself situated in a new life. Volunteering to work with Frances, the air to a fortune who is also plagued with the end stages of cancer, Vanessa is tasked with a very important and dangerous job… a job given to her personally by Frances who seems to trust her with everything. What will she discover? What mistakes will she make along the way? Will the cost be deadly? I have always loved Sam Hepburn books. She writes thrilling stories with relatable characters who seem to find themselves tangled in some heap of a mess. She reveals just enough of the twisty plot as the story progresses and delivers a fabulous twisty punch at the end! Excellent read!
I'm in danger...but no one will believe me...
I'm not sure what I expected from this book but after devouring her previous domestic thriller "A Good Mother" and loving it, I knew I would be in for a treat. I wasn't wrong. But it was also something completely different. Nothing at all like I could have or might have expected. But I was seriously completely blindsided until BAM! she hit us with the first twist and then BAM! the second coming right before that ending.
Heartbroken after her husband divorced her, Vanessa Dunn is intent on reinventing herself in some form or another by reaching out and helping those less fortunate than others. She volunteers at a men's homeless shelter as well becoming a volunteer visitor at a hospice where she meets Frances Findlay who takes her into her confidence and entrusts her with an important task: to find the child she'd given birth to over two decades ago. And this is where things get interesting.
That aside, Vanessa is also the owner and operator of her own interior design business in which she employs some of the men from the homeless shelter looking to improve themselves after falling on hard times. She finds two such employees in Mick and Jay, much to the annoyance of her manageress, Meghan who doesn't trust them. But Vanessa is intent on giving them a positive outlook on life and something to work towards.
On a personal level, Vanessa's life hasn't been a bed of roses. She grew up in a house where she felt very little loved and where her much younger sister was the deemed favourite. Even now, with her father living abroad and her mother in a care home with dementia, Izzy is still the favoured sibling despite never being around to visit or care for their mother. That's all left up to Vanessa. Her entire life, even that of the new Vanessa is filled with care home visits, hospice visits, homeless shelter volunteering as well as her business. So when Ralph steps into her store one day to buy a wedding gift, Meghan is quick to push Vanessa into going out with him. But Vanessa isn't so sure.
That is Part One. When Part Two begins, I had to go back and see if I was reading it correctly. What just happened? You will just have pick up the book and find out yourself. But prepare to be shocked. Nothing is as it seems.
I read this book in one sitting in bed tonight, so it was a fairly quick read. There really isn't a lot I can say about it except that it was well plotted and cleverly crafted. Throughout the entire book I wasn't sure how I was going to rate it as it really seemed mediocre throughout much of the story. And then BAM! that twist just threw everything sideways and then that final one was just a delicious twist of the knife. So close and yet so far.
What started out as a 3 star read easily ramped up to 4 by the end.

I really enjoyed this book! The characters were well developed and the story was engaging. I recommend that others try this book as well. Well done!
This book starts off slowly but then WOW the unexpected twists start coming. Great book and one I thoroughly recommend.
Many thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC
WOW first of all I have to say this is definitely one of my top reads this year and I would advise everyone to read this!!!
Having read so many books I really thought I knew what direction the author was taking.... but no this author is extremely clever and took me on a magical twisting journey, where I had no idea what the final destination would be. The wool was definitely pulled over my eyes!!!
My advice is to go into this blind and enjoy this amazing book!!!
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
Wow! What have I just read? This was absolutely brilliant. When each reveal was made, they all shocked me as they were unexpected, I had to put my device down each time, just to digest what I had just read and to readjust my jaw from being on the floor.
The Mistake I Made started off at a slow pace. Getting to know the main character Vanessa Dunn, and how she is changing her life for the better since her divorce. Then it starts getting eerie and intense, the pace quickens and I could not stop reading!
This book is honestly a fantastic read, the blurb does not give anything away, and the twists are so unexpected that even if you are a seasoned reader of psychological thrillers, you won’t see them coming!
Go grab it now!

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is my first Sam Hepburn book and I liked it. Hepburn used foreshadowing expertly. I loved the way she presented clues in an off hand way. Watch for clues as you read this book.

3/5 stars
Overall, I enjoyed this book. Personally, I would classify it more as a mystery than a thriller. Part one was a little slow, but I liked how each chapter ended with suspense. Part two was the best part of the story with many unexpected twists. The ending was sudden and I was surprised there was not an epilogue.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Sam Hepburn for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is one of those books that you'll pick up and it's good, But you can put it down. Then you get to the end of part one and the entire story is thrown on its head. 3 stars for the first half. 5 stars for the second!!! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to review.
I really enjoyed Part Two of this story, and the twists toward the end were a lot of fun.
Unfortunately, the first 70% of the story was extremely difficult to get through.
I forced myself to keep going because I knew eventually I'd get to something exciting, based on the synopsis of the book.
The ending was abrupt and frustrating, but I'm not sure if that made it better.
2.5/5
Domestic thriller at its best!
I have to say I did not see the twist coming!
Brilliant plot by author Sam Hepburn!
If you are in the mood to read a intense psychological thriller, pick this book up now!

Thank you to #NetGalley, #Bookouture and Sam Hepburn for the opportunity to read an advance copy of THE MISTAKE I MADE, to be published 11 August 2023. What an interesting domestic thriller! It had murder, drugs, adultery, homelessness, Mob connections and babies born out of wedlock, This novel was a slow burn until the second part when all of the action, drama and family upheaval became clear. The twists and turns in the second part we’re phenomenal. 4/5 Stars. #NetGalley. #Bookouture #SamHepburn #TheMistakeIMade
Seriously, the only mistake about this book is not reading it 😎
I know I know reviewers inc me often say we are blindsided and we misjudged what was happening but with this I was 100% on the wrong footing, with both feet
The author is not just clever but remarkable how she has created such a tale that got me shouting to Matt when the truth came out to tell him how shocked I was
So well written, so craftily done to pull everything over the readers eyes and has left me amazed that even though I read a lot a book pulled me in and fooled me so well
Unbelievably good all round read
