This was a really well written book to help children understand (in a very simplified basic way) what it is like to have a blind sibling, or at least I feel like it is a good into. I don't have a blind sibling. But I think it is a healthy way to view it and to understand it.
This book was adorable and a great read to explain blindness to young children.
The only downfall to the book was even as I read it to my daughter I didn't understand that the brother was blind until it spoke of the service dog; which is about halfway through the book.
I believe a bit more clarity near the beginning would be helpful for smaller readers especially if they're reading it on their own.
This book was beautiful. I love how it explores that there are many different family types and how each one’s day to day lives can be different. I love that it will make the audience put themselves in others shoes and will make them think outside of their normal. Inclusivity is so important! The illustrations are so beautiful and really draw you in. I will be getting a copy of this for my kiddos!
First of all, I want to thank the author and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Lucky me by Lawrence Schimel is coming out on October 17, 2023.
This would be a wonderful book to add to your home or school library. The story was inspiring and the illustrations were great to look at. I would highly recommend this book. This would be such a good book for anyone else also living with a disability. #LuckyMe #NetGalley
I loved this book, the illustrations were fantastic. I liked how the book didn’t out right say his brother is visually- impaired but gave clues through out the story. I also liked the dynamics of the brothers, loyal instead of fighting. It is heartwarming. I’d love to add this to my classroom library. Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy.
What an excellent book! As a former Social Work who spent years working with people of differing abilities, I love this story. Teaching children that differences in abilities are good and not something to see as unlucky is awesome. The illustrations are simple but engaging. Great job! Thanks #NetGalley
While the cover artwork originally drew me in, this story did not disappoint. Each page lead you through Bruno’s view of his world as he explains the differences between living with his blind brother and his friend’s way of living. Loved the representation in this and the perspective of a sibling in a situation like this. Though my child has not experienced this, I can imagine this book could be very relatable for many families. The artwork through was very well blended of child-like artwork with more realistic artwork and flowed very well.
What an amazingly adorable story about the love between siblings. One things I enjoyed was the illustration style in the book, for example , when the brother is being described as reading in the dark, it actually looks like a flashlight. As well as when the staircase is mentioned, the sentences are written like they're a staircase. Very clever stylization. I also liked the overall message of loving someone that close to you that even the simplest of things they do impresses you immensely. What a wonderful story for a child to be exposed to!
Thanks NetGalley for this arc in exchange for an honest review!
The artworks are fun and filled with details! Filled with diverse characters and has good disability rep. Overall, a great, positive read which I would highly recommend for the young ones!
“I am so lucky - I have an awesome brother and a really good friend!”
Bruno is an observant little boy. He notices how things are different for his friend Sanjay and how things are different for his brother Mateo. He notices are things are for his own life and for this brother; for example, Bruno has to stop reading when his parents take away his flashlight. But Mateo gets to read in Braille, that’s his luck. He gets to keep reading- even in the darkness.
This book was a nice, quick read about how different people live different ways. I liked the art style, it reminded me of the watercolor art style from the 90’s. Kind of reminded me of the illustrations in Roald Dahl books.
A nice read, I liked it.
